Generalized Fibonacci polynomials and Fibonomial coefficients

The focus of this paper is the study of generalized Fibonacci polynomials and Fibonomial coefficients. The former are polynomials {n} in variables s and t given by {0} = 0, {1} = 1, and {n} = s{n-1}+t{n-2} for n ge 2. The latter are defined by {n choose k} = {n}!/({k}!{n-k}!) where {n}! = {1}{2}...{n}. These quotients are also polynomials in s and t, and specializations give the ordinary binomial coefficients, the Fibonomial coefficients, and the q-binomial coefficients. We present some of their fundamental properties, including a more general recursion for {n}, an analogue of the binomial theorem, a new proof of the Euler-Cassini identity in this setting with applications to estimation of tails of series, and valuations when s and t take on integral values. We also study a corresponding analogue of the Catalan numbers. Conjectures and open problems are scattered throughout the paper.
The fractal nature of the Fibonomial triangle
It is well known that Pascal's triangle exhibits fractal behavior when reduced modulo a prime. We show that the triangle of Fibonomial coefficients has a similar nature modulo two. Specifically, for any $m \ge 0$, the subtriangle consisting of the first $3 \cdot 2^m$ rows is duplicated on the left and right sides of the next $3 \cdot 2^m$ rows, with an inverted triangle of zeros in between. We give three proofs of this fact. The first uses a combinatorial interpretation of the Fibonomials due to Sagan and Savage. The second employs an analogue of Lucas' congruence for the parity of binomial coefficients. The final one is inductive. We also use induction to show that the Fibonomial triangle has a similar structure modulo three. We end with some open questions.
Unimodality of partitions with distinct parts inside Ferrers shapes

We investigate the rank-generating function $F_λ$ of the poset of partitions contained inside a given shifted Ferrers shape $λ$. When $λ$ has four parts, we show that $F_λ$ is unimodal when $λ=\langle n,n-1,n-2,n-3 \rangle$, for any $n\ge 4$, and that unimodality fails for the doubly-indexed, infinite family of partitions of the form $λ=\langle n,n-t,n-2t,n-3t \rangle$, for any given $t\ge 2$ and $n$ large enough with respect to $t$.
When $λ$ has $b\le 3$ parts, we show that our rank-generating functions $F_λ$ are all unimodal. However, the situation remains mostly obscure for $b\ge 5$. In general, the type of results that we obtain present some remarkable similarities with those of the 1990 paper of D. Stanton, who considered the case of partitions inside ordinary (straight) Ferrers shapes.
Along the way, we also determine some interesting $q$-analogs of the binomial coefficients, which in certain instances we conjecture to be unimodal. We state several other conjectures throughout this note, in the hopes to stimulate further work in this area. In particular, one of these will attempt to place into a much broader context the unimodality of the posets $M(n)$ of staircase partitions, for which determining a combinatorial proof remains an outstanding open problem.
Total occurrence statistics on restricted permutations
We study the total number of occurrences of several vincular (also called generalized) patterns and other statistics, such as the major index and the Denert statistic, on permutations avoiding a pattern of length 3, extending results of Bona (2010, 2012) and Homberger (2012). In particular, for 2-3-1-avoiding permutations, we find the total number of occurrences of any vincular pattern of length 3. In some cases the answer is given by simple expressions involving binomial coefficients. The tools we use are bijections with Dyck paths, generating functions, and block decompositions of permutations.

We introduce the notion of infinitely log-monotonic sequences. By establishing a connection between completely monotonic functions and infinitely log-monotonic sequences, we show that the sequences of the Bernoulli numbers, the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients are infinitely log-monotonic. In particular, if a sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is log-monotonic of order two, then it is ratio log-concave in the sense that the sequence $\{a_{n+1}/a_{n}\}_{n\geq 0}$ is log-concave. Furthermore, we prove that if a sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\geq k}$ is ratio log-concave, then the sequence $\{\sqrt[n]{a_n}\}_{n\geq k}$ is strictly log-concave subject to a certain initial condition. As consequences, we show that the sequences of the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, the central Delannoy numbers, the numbers of tree-like polyhexes and the Domb numbers are ratio log-concave. For the case of the Domb numbers $D_n$, we confirm a conjecture of Sun on the log-concavity of the sequence $\{\sqrt[n]{D_n}\}_{n\geq 1}$.

We introduce a generalization of the Stirling numbers via symmetric functions involving two weight functions. The resulting extension unifies previously known Stirling-type sequences with known symmetric function forms, as well as other sequences such as the $p,q$-binomial coefficients. Recurrence relations, generating functions, orthogonality relations, convolution formulas, and determinants of certain matrices involving the obtained sequences are derived. We also give combinatorial interpretations of certain cases in terms of colored partitions and permutations.
Some Determinantal Identities
Some applications of a result, which is proved recently, is considered. We first prove three determinantal identities concerning the binomial coefficient and Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind. We also easily obtain the inverse of the Vandermonde matrix. Then we derive a recurrence formula for sums of powers, which is similar to the well-known Newton identity. In the last section, we consider some sequences given by a homologous linear recurrence equation.
A determinantal identity for the Fibonacci numbers of higher order is proved.
We finish with an expression of the generalized Vandermonde determinant in terms of the standard Vandermonde determinant and elementary symmetric polynomials.

We know [Rui Duarte and António Guedes de Oliveira, New developments of an old identity, manuscript arXiv:1203.5424, submitted.] that, for every non-negative integer numbers $n,i,j$ and for every real number $\ell$, $$ \sum_{i+j=n} \binom{2i-\ell}{i} \binom{2j+\ell}{j} = \sum_{i+j=n}\binom{2i}{i} \binom{2j}{j}, $$ which is well-known to be $4^n$. We extend this result by proving that, indeed, $$ \sum_{i+j=n} \binom{ai+k-\ell}{i} \binom{aj+\ell}{j} = \sum_{i+j=n} \binom{ai+k}{i} \binom{aj}{j} $$ for every integer $a$ and for every real $k$, and present new expressions for this value.
Some divisibility properties of binomial and q-binomial coefficients

We first prove that if $a$ has a prime factor not dividing $b$ then there are infinitely many positive integers $n$ such that $\binom {an+bn} {an}$ is not divisible by $bn+1$. This confirms a recent conjecture of Z.-W. Sun. Moreover, we provide some new divisibility properties of binomial coefficients: for example, we prove that $\binom {12n} {3n}$ and $\binom {12n} {4n}$ are divisible by $6n-1$, and that $\binom {330n} {88n}$ is divisible by $66n-1$, for all positive integers $n$. As we show, the latter results are in fact consequences of divisibility and positivity results for quotients of $q$-binomial coefficients by $q$-integers, generalizing the positivity of $q$-Catalan numbers. We also put forward several related conjectures.

If p is a prime and n a positive integer, let v(n) denote the exponent of p in n, and u(n)=n/p^{v(n)} the unit part of n. If k is a positive integer not divisible by p, we show that the p-adic limit of (-1)^{pke} u((kp^e)!) as e goes to infinity is a well-defined p-adic integer, which we call z_k. In terms of these, we give a formula for the p-adic limit of binom{a p^e +c, b p^e +d) as e goes to infinity, which we call binom(a p^\infty +c, b p^\infty +d). Here a \ge b are positive integers, and c and d are integers.
A Counting Function
We define a counting function that is related to the binomial coefficients.
An explicit formula for this function is proved.
In some particular cases, simpler explicit formuls are derived. We also derive a formula for the number of (0,1)-matrices, having a fixed number of 1's, and having no zero rows and zero columns.
Further, we show that our function satisfies several recurrence relations.
The relationship of our counting function with different classes of integers is then examined. These classes include: different kind of figurate numbers, the number of points on the surface of a square pyramid, the magic constants, the truncated square numbers, the coefficients of the Chebyshev polynomials, the Catalan numbers, the Dellanoy numbers, the Sulanke numbers, the numbers of the coordination sequences, and the number of the crystal ball sequences of a cubic lattice.
In the last part of the paper, we prove that several configurations are counted by our function. Some of these are: the number of spanning subgraphs of the complete bipartite graph, the number of square containing in a square, the number of coloring's of points on a line, the number of divisors of some particular numbers, the number of all parts in the compositions of an integer, the numbers of the weak compositions of integers, and the number of particular lattice paths.
We conclude by counting the number of possible moves of the rook, bishop, and queen on a chessboard.
The most statements in the paper are provided by bijective proofs in terms of insets, which are defined in the paper. With this we want to show that different configurations may be counted by the same method.
Two permutation classes enumerated by the central binomial coefficients
We define a map between the set of permutations that avoid either the four patterns $3214,3241,4213,4231$ or $3124,3142,4123,4132$, and the set of Dyck prefixes. This map, when restricted to either of the two classes, turns out to be a bijection that allows us to determine some notable features of these permutations, such as the distribution of the statistics "number of ascents", "number of left-to-right maxima", "first element", and "position of the maximum element"

We prove an inverse relation and a family of convolution formulas involving partial Bell polynomials. Known and some presumably new combinatorial identities of convolution type are discussed. Our approach relies on an interesting multinomial formula for the binomial coefficients. The inverse relation is deduced from a parametrization of suitable identities that facilitate dealing with compositions of Bell polynomials.
Permutations with given peak set
Let Sym_n denote the symmetric group of all permutations pi = a_1...a_n of {1,...,n}. An index i is a peak of pi if a_{i-1} < a_i > a_{i+1} and we let P(pi) be the set of peaks of pi. Given any set S of positive integers we define P(S;n) to be the set pi in Sym_n with P(pi)=S. Our main result is that for all fixed subsets of positive integers S and all sufficiently large n we have #P(S;n)= p(n) 2^{n-#S-1} for some polynomial p(n) depending on S. We explicitly compute p(n) for various S of probabilistic interest, including certain cases where S depends on n. We also discuss two conjectures, one about positivity of the coefficients of the expansion of p(n) in a binomial coefficient basis, and the other about sets S maximizing #P(S;n) when #S is fixed.
An identity for the central binomial coefficient
We find the joint distribution of three simple statistics on lattice paths of n upsteps and n downsteps leading to a triple sum identity for the central binomial coefficient {2n}-choose-{n}. We explain why one of the constituent double sums counts the irreducible pairs of compositions considered by Bender et al., and we evaluate some of the other sums.
On some binomial coefficients related to the evaluation of tan(nx)
The purpose of this paper is to study some binomial coefficients which are related to the evaluation of tan(nx). We present a connection between these binomial coefficients and the coefficients of a family of derivative polynomials for tangent and secant.

We establish two binomial coefficient--generalized harmonic sum identities using the partial fraction decomposition method. These identities are a key ingredient in the proofs of numerous supercongruences. In particular, in other works of the author, they are used to establish modulo $p^k$ ($k>1$) congruences between truncated generalized hypergeometric series, and a function which extends Greene's hypergeometric function over finite fields to the $p$-adic setting. A specialization of one of these congruences is used to prove an outstanding conjecture of Rodriguez-Villegas which relates a truncated generalized hypergeometric series to the $p$-th Fourier coefficient of a particular modular form.

We derive formulas for the terms in the conjectured asymptotic expansions of the moments, at the central point, of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions, $L(1/2,χ_d)$, and also of the $L$-functions associated to quadratic twists of an elliptic curve over $\Q$. In so doing, we are led to study determinants of binomial coefficients of the form $\det (\binom{2k-i-λ_{k-i+1}}{2k-2j})$.
