A generalized central trinomial coefficient $T_n(b,c)$ is the coefficient of $x^n$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^n$ with $b,c\in\mathbb Z$. In this paper we investigate congruences and series for sums of terms related to central binomial coefficients and generalized central trinomial coefficients. The paper contains many conjectures on congruences related to representations of primes by certain binary quadratic forms, and 62 proposed new series for $1/π$ motivated by congruences and related dualities.
Generalized compositions with a fixed number of parts
We investigate compositions of a positive integer with a fixed number of parts, when there are several types of each natural number. These compositions produce new relationships among binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and numbers of the Catalan triangle.

In this paper we mainly employ the Zeilberger algorithm to study congruences for sums of terms involving products of three binomial coefficients. Let $p>3$ be a prime. We prove that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k^2\binom{2k}{k+d}}{64^k}\equiv 0\pmod{p^2}$$ for all $d\in\{0,\ldots,p-1\}$ with $d\equiv (p+1)/2\pmod2$. If $p\equiv 1\pmod4$ and $p=x^2+y^2$ with $x\equiv 1\pmod4$ and $y\equiv 0\pmod2$, then we show $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k^2\binom{2k}{k+1}}{(-8)^k}\equiv 2p-2x^2\pmod{p^2}\ \ \mbox{and}\ \ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k\binom{2k}{k+1}^2}{(-8)^k}\equiv-2p\pmod{p^2}$$ by means of determining $x$ mod $p^2$ via $$(-1)^{(p-1)/4}\,x\equiv\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{k+1}{8^k}\binom{2k}k^2\equiv\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{2k+1}{(-16)^k}\binom{2k}k^2\pmod{p^2}.$$ We also solve the remaining open cases of Rodriguez-Villegas' conjectural congruences on $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k^2\binom{3k}k}{108^k},\ \ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k^2\binom{4k}{2k}}{256^k}, \ \ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}{k}\binom{3k}k\binom{6k}{3k}}{12^{3k}}$$ modulo $p^2$.

In this paper we deduce some new supercongruences modulo powers of a prime $p>3$. Let $d\in\{0,1,\ldots,(p-1)/2\}$. We show that
$$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{\binom{2k}k\binom{2k}{k+d}}{8^k}\equiv 0\ (\mbox{mod}\ p)\ \ \ \mbox{if}\ d\equiv \frac{p+1}2\ (\mbox{mod}\ 2),$$ and $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{\binom{2k}k\binom{2k}{k+d}}{16^k} \equiv\left(\frac{-1}p\right)+p^2\frac{(-1)^d}4E_{p-3}\left(d+\frac12\right)\pmod{p^3},$$ where $E_{p-3}(x)$ denotes the Euler polynomial of degree $p-3$, and $(-)$ stands for the Legendre symbol. The paper also contains some other results such as $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}k^{(1+(\frac{-1}p))/2}\frac{\binom{6k}{3k}\binom{3k}k}{864^k}\equiv0\pmod{p^2}.$$
Proof of three conjectures on congruences

In this paper we prove three conjectures on congruences involving central binomial coefficients or Lucas sequences. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $a$ be a positive integer. We show that if $p\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ or $a>1$ then $$ \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor\frac34p^a\rfloor}\binom{-1/2}k\equiv\left(\frac{2}{p^a}\right)\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $(-)$ denotes the Jacobi symbol. This confirms a conjecture of the second author. We also confirm a conjecture of R. Tauraso by showing that $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{L_k}{k^2}\equiv0\pmod{p}\quad {\rm provided}\ \ p>5,$$ where the Lucas numbers $L_0,L_1,L_2,\ldots$ are defined by $L_0=2,\ L_1=1$ and $L_{n+1}=L_n+L_{n-1}\ (n=1,2,3,\ldots)$. Our third theorem states that if $p\not=5$ then we can determine $F_{p^a-(\frac{p^a}5)}$ mod $p^3$ in the following way: $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}(-1)^k\binom{2k}k\equiv\left(\frac{p^a}5\right)\left(1-2F_{p^a-(\frac{p^a}5)}\right)\ \pmod{p^3},$$ which appeared as a conjecture in a paper of Sun and Tauraso in 2010.
Generalized Compositions and Weighted Fibonacci Numbers
In this paper we consider particular generalized compositions of a natural number with a given number of parts. Its number is a weighted polynomial coefficient. The number of all generalized compositions of a natural number is a weighted $r$-generalized Fibonacci number. A relationship between these two numbers will be derived.
We shall thus obtain a generalization of the well-known formula connecting Fibonacci numbers with the binomial coefficients.

We study divisibility properties of certain sums and alternating sums involving binomial coefficients and powers of integers. For example, we prove that for all positive integers $n_1,..., n_m$, $n_{m+1}=n_1$, and any nonnegative integer $r$, there holds {align*} \sum_{k=0}^{n_1}ε^k (2k+1)^{2r+1}\prod_{i=1}^{m} {n_i+n_{i+1}+1\choose n_i-k} \equiv 0 \mod (n_1+n_m+1){n_1+n_m\choose n_1}, {align*} and conjecture that for any nonnegative integer $r$ and positive integer $s$ such that $r+s$ is odd, $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n}ε^k (2k+1)^{r}({2n\choose n-k}-{2n\choose n-k-1})^{s} \equiv 0 \mod{2n\choose n}, $$ where $ε=\pm 1$.

We give a $q$-analogue of some binomial coefficient identities of Y. Sun [Electron. J. Combin. 17 (2010), #N20] as follows: {align*} \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}{m+k\brack k}_{q^2}{m+1\brack n-2k}_{q} q^{n-2k\choose 2} &={m+n\brack n}_{q}, \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor n/4\rfloor}{m+k\brack k}_{q^4}{m+1\brack n-4k}_{q} q^{n-4k\choose 2} &=\sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}(-1)^k{m+k\brack k}_{q^2}{m+n-2k\brack n-2k}_{q}, {align*} where ${n\brack k}_q$ stands for the $q$-binomial coefficient. We provide two proofs, one of which is combinatorial via partitions.

We bound the number of nearly orthogonal vectors with fixed VC-dimension over $\setpm^n$. Our bounds are of interest in machine learning and empirical process theory and improve previous bounds by Haussler. The bounds are based on a simple projection argument and the generalize to other product spaces. Along the way we derive tight bounds on the sum of binomial coefficients in terms of the entropy function.

Binomial coefficients and central trinomial coefficients play important roles in combinatorics. Let $p>3$ be a prime. We show that $$T_{p-1}\equiv\left(\frac p3\right)3^{p-1}\ \pmod{p^2},$$ where the central trinomial coefficient $T_n$ is the constant term in the expansion of $(1+x+x^{-1})^n$. We also prove three congruences modulo $p^3$ conjectured by Sun, one of which is $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{p-1}k\binom{2k}k((-1)^k-(-3)^{-k})\equiv \left(\frac p3\right)(3^{p-1}-1)\ \pmod{p^3}.$$ In addition, we get some new combinatorial identities.

In this paper we initiate the study of products and sums divisible by central binomial coefficients. We show that 2(2n+1)binom(2n,n)| binom(6n,3n)binom(3n,n) for every n=1,2,3,... Also, for any nonnegative integers $k$ and $n$ we have $$\binom {2k}k | \binom{4n+2k+2}{2n+k+1}\binom{2n+k+1}{2k}\binom{2n-k+1}n$$ and $$\binom{2k}k | (2n+1)\binom{2n}nC_{n+k}\binom{n+k+1}{2k},$$ where $C_m$ denotes the Catalan number $\binom{2m}m/(m+1)=\binom{2m}m-\binom{2m}{m+1}$. Applying this result we obtain two sums divisible by central binomial coefficients.

The $q$-binomial coefficients $\qbinom{n}{m}=\prod_{i=1}^m(1-q^{n-m+i})/(1-q^i)$, for integers $0\le m\le n$, are known to be polynomials with non-negative integer coefficients. This readily follows from the $q$-binomial theorem, or the many combinatorial interpretations of $\qbinom{n}{m}$. In this note we conjecture an arithmetically motivated generalisation of the non-negativity property for products of ratios of $q$-factorials that happen to be polynomials.

We construct multiple $qt$-binomial coefficients and related multiple analogues of several celebrated families of special numbers in this paper. These multidimensional generalizations include the first and the second kind of $qt$-Stirling numbers, $qt$-Bell numbers, $qt$-Bernoulli numbers, $qt$-Catalan numbers and the $qt$--Fibonacci numbers. In the course of developing main properties of these extensions, we prove results that are significant in their own rights such as certain probability measures on the set of integer partitions.

In 1947 Fine obtained an expression for the number of binomial coefficients on row n of Pascal's triangle that are nonzero modulo p. In this paper we use Kummer's theorem to generalize Fine's theorem to prime powers, expressing the number of nonzero binomial coefficients modulo p^alpha as a sum over certain integer partitions. For fixed alpha, this expression can be rewritten to show explicit dependence on the number of occurrences of each subword in the base-p representation of n.
Curious congruences for Fibonacci numbers
In this paper we establish some sophisticated congruences involving central binomial coefficients and Fibonacci numbers. For example, we show that if $p\not=2,5$ is a prime then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_{2k}\binom{2k}{k}=(-1)^{[p/5]}(1-(p/5)) (mod p^2)$$ and $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_{2k+1}\binom{2k}k=(-1)^{[p/5]}(p/5) (mod p^2).$$ We also obtain similar results for some other second-order recurrences and raise several conjectures.
Congruences involving binomial coefficients and Lucas sequences
In this paper we obtain some congruences involving central binomial coefficients and Lucas sequences. For example, we show that if p>5 is a prime then $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_k*binom(2k,k)/12^k$ is congruent to 0,1,-1 modulo p according as p=1,4 (mod 5), p=13,17 (mod 30), and p=7,23 (mod 30) respectively, where {F_n} is the Fibonacci sequence. We also raise several conjectures.

Let s and t be variables. Define polynomials {n} in s, t by {0}=0, {1}=1, and {n}=s{n-1}+t{n-2} for n >= 2. If s, t are integers then the corresponding sequence of integers is called a Lucas sequence. Define an analogue of the binomial coefficients by
C{n,k}={n}!/({k}!{n-k}!) where {n}!={1}{2}...{n}. It is easy to see that C{n,k} is a polynomial in s and t. The purpose of this note is to give two combinatorial interpretations for this polynomial in terms of statistics on integer partitions inside a k by n-k rectangle. When s=t=1 we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the fibonomial coefficients which are simpler than any that have previously appeared in the literature.
