Let I(G) be the edge ideal associated to a simple graph G. We study the graded Betti numbers that appear in the linear strand of the minimal free resolution of I(G).
Betti Numbers of Graph Ideals
In this thesis we investigate certain types of monomial ideals of polynomial rings over fields. We are interested in minimal free resolutions of these ideals (or equivalently the quotients of the polynomial ring by the ideals) considered as modules over the polynomial ring. There is no simple method of finding such resolutions but in the case of Stanley-Reisner ideals Hochster's formula and its variants provide a way to compute the Betti numbers of these resolutions.
Even with these formulae it is not in general possible to find especially explicit or useful descriptions of the Betti numbers. However we restrict our attention to those ideals which are generated by square free monomials of degree 2. The purpose of this is to associate these ideals with graphs. This provides a link between algebraic objects, the monomial ideals, and combinatorial objects, the graphs. This correspondence enables us do define new numerical invariants of graphs: the Betti numbers and projective dimension of the corresponding graph ideals.
We find explicit descriptions of the Betti numbers and projective dimensions of cycles and forests. In the case of forests we find a method of describing the Betti numbers in terms of the Betti numbers of subforests. This also leads to a description of the projective dimension of a forests in terms of the projective dimensions of its subforests.
It turns out that the projective dimension of forests can be defined in purely combinatorial terms and hence it gives a new combinatorial numerical invariant of forests.

In this paper we study the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner ideals generated in degree 2. We show that the first six Betti numbers do not depend on the characteristic of the ground field. We also show that, if the number of variables $n$ is at most 10, all Betti numbers are independent of the ground field. For $n=11$, there exists precisely 4 examples in which the Betti numbers depend on the ground field. This is equivalent to the statement that the homology of flag complexes with at most 10 vertices is torsion free and that there exists precisely 4 non-isomorphic flag complexes with 11 vertices whose homology has torsion.
In each of the 4 examples mentioned above the 8th Betti numbers depend on the ground field and so we conclude that the highest Betti number which is always independent of the ground field is either 6 or 7; if the former is true then we show that there must exist a graph with 12 vertices whose 7th Betti number depends on the ground field.

We extend the methods developed in our earlier work to algorithmically compute the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of reductive varieties. These form a class of highly symmetric varieties that includes equivariant compactifications of reductive groups. Thereby, we extend a well-known algorithm for toric varieties.

The wreath product W(r,n) of the cyclic group of order r and the symmetric group S_n acts on the corresponding projective hyperplane complement, and on its wonderful compactification as defined by De Concini and Procesi. We give a formula for the characters of the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of this compactification, extending the result of Ginzburg and Kapranov in the r=1 case. As a corollary, we get a formula for the Betti numbers which generalizes the result of Yuzvinsky in the r=2 case. Our method involves applying to the nested-set stratification a generalization of Joyal's theory of tensor species, which includes a link between polynomial functors and plethysm for general r. We also give a new proof of Lehrer's formula for the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of the hyperplane complement.

A certain squarefree monomial ideal $H_P$ arising from a finite partially ordered set $P$ will be studied from viewpoints of both commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, it is proved that the defining ideal of the Rees algebra of $H_P$ possesses a quadratic Gröbner basis. Thus in particular all powers of $H_P$ have linear resolutions. Second, the minimal free graded resolution of $H_P$ will be constructed explicitly and a combinatorial formula to compute the Betti numbers of $H_P$ will be presented. Third, by using the fact that the Alexander dual of the simplicial complex $Δ$ whose Stanley--Reisner ideal coincides with $H_P$ is Cohen--Macaulay, all the Cohen--Macaulay bipartite graphs will be classified.
Decomposing Hessenberg varieties over classical groups
Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety, including the Springer fibers, the Peterson variety, and the entire flag variety itself. The seminal example arises from a problem in numerical analysis and consists for a fixed linear operator M of the full flags V_1 \subsetneq V_2 >... \subsetneq V_n in GL_n with M V_i contained in V_{i+1} for all i.
In this paper I show that all Hessenberg varieties in type A_n and semisimple and regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in types B_n,C_n, and D_n can be paved by affine spaces. Moreover, this paving is the intersection of a particular Bruhat decomposition with the Hessenberg variety. In type A_n, an equivalent description of the cells of the paving in terms of certain fillings of a Young diagram can be used to compute the Betti numbers of Hessenberg varieties. As an example, I show that the Poincare polynomial of the Peterson variety in A_n is \sum_{i =0}^{n-1} \binom{n-1}{i} x^{2i}.

There is a one-to-one correspondence between geometric lattices and the intersection lattices of arrangements of homotopy spheres. When the arrangements are essential and fully partitioned, Zaslavsky's enumeration of the cells of the arrangement still holds. An application of the theory shows that all minimal cellular resolutions of matroid Steiner ideals are bounded subcomplexes of homotopy sphere arrangements of the given matroid. As a result the Betti numbers of the ideal are computed and seen to be equivalent to Stanley's formula in the special case of face ideals of independence complexes of matroids.
How is a graph like a manifold?
In this article, we discuss some classical problems in combinatorics which can be solved by exploiting analogues between graph theory and the theory of manifolds. One well-known example is the McMullen conjecture, which was settled twenty years ago by Richard Stanley by interpreting certain combinatorial invariants of convex polytopes as the Betti numbers of a complex projective variety. Another example is the classical parallel redrawing problem, which turns out to be closely related to the problem of computing the second Betti number of a complex compact $(\C^*)^n$-manifold.

We define a set of invariants of a homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring called the symmetric iterated Betti numbers of $I$. For $I_Γ$, the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a simplicial complex $Γ$, these numbers are the symmetric counterparts of the exterior iterated Betti numbers of $Γ$ introduced by Duval and Rose. We show that the symmetric iterated Betti numbers of an ideal $I$ coincide with those of a particular reverse lexicographic generic initial ideal $\Gin(I)$ of $I$, and interpret these invariants in terms of the associated primes and standard pairs of $\Gin(I)$. We verify that for an ideal $I=I_Γ$ the extremal Betti numbers of $I_Γ$ are precisely the extremal (symmetric or exterior) iterated Betti numbers of $Γ$. We close with some results and conjectures about the relationship between symmetric and exterior iterated Betti numbers of a simplicial complex.
The Homology of the real moduli spaces \bar(M)_(0,n)
We compute the rank of the first homology group and we study the higher Betti numbers of the real points of the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen compactification of stable n-pointed curves of genus 0,which coincides with the Chow quotient (RP^1)^n//PGL(2,R)(after Kapranov).

If $M$ is the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, and $A=H^*(M,\k)$ is the cohomology ring of $M$ over a field of characteristic 0, then the ranks, $φ_k$, of the lower central series quotients of $π_1(M)$ can be computed from the Betti numbers, $b_{ii}=\dim_{\k} \Tor^A_i(\k,\k)_i$, of the linear strand in a (minimal) free resolution of $\k$ over $A$. We use the Cartan-Eilenberg change of rings spectral sequence to relate these numbers to the graded Betti numbers, $b'_{ij}=\dim_{\k} \Tor^E_i(A,\k)_j$, of a (minimal) resolution of $A$ over the exterior algebra $E$.
From this analysis, we recover a formula of Falk for $φ_3$, and obtain a new formula for $φ_4$. The exact sequence of low degree terms in the spectral sequence allows us to answer a question of Falk on graphic arrangements, and also shows that for these arrangements, the algebra $A$ is Koszul iff the arrangement is supersolvable. We also give combinatorial lower bounds on the Betti numbers, $b'_{i,i+1}$, of the linear strand of the free resolution of $A$ over $E$; if the lower bound is attained for $i = 2$, then it is attained for all $i \ge 2$. For such arrangements, we compute the entire linear strand of the resolution, and we prove that all components of the first resonance variety of $A$ are local. For graphic arrangements (which do not attain the lower bound, unless they have no braid sub-arrangements), we show that $b'_{i,i+1}$ is determined by the number of triangles and $K_4$ subgraphs in the graph.

Let G be a finite connected graph. The Kirchhoff polynomial of G is a certain homogeneous polynomial whose degree is equal to the first betti number of G. These polynomials appear in the study of electrical circuits and in the evaluation of Feynman amplitudes. Motivated by work of D. Kreimer and D. J. Broadhurst associating multiple zeta values to certain Feynman integrals, Kontsevich conjectured that the number of zeros of a Kirchhoff polynomial over the field with q elements is always a polynomial function of q. We show that this conjecture is false by relating the schemes defined by Kirchhoff polynomials to the representation spaces of matroids. Moreover, using Mnev's universality theorem, we show that these schemes essentially generate all arithmetic of schemes of finite type over the integers.

We construct minimal cellular resolutions of squarefree monomial ideals arising from hyperplane arrangements, matroids and oriented matroids. These are Stanley-Reisner ideals of complexes of independent sets, and of triangulations of Lawrence matroid polytopes. Our resolution provides a cellular realization of Stanley's formula for their Betti numbers. For unimodular matroids our resolutions are related to hyperplane arrangements on tori, and we recover the resolutions constructed by Bayer, Popescu and Sturmfels. We resolve the combinatorial problems posed in their paper by computing Mobius invariants of graphic and cographic arrangements in terms of Hermite polynomials.

We generalize results of Hattori on the topology of complements of hyperplane arrangements, from the class of generic arrangements, to the much broader class of hypersolvable arrangements. We show that the higher homotopy groups of the complement vanish in a certain combinatorially determined range, and we give an explicit Zπ_1-module presentation of π_p, the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group. We also give a combinatorial formula for the π_1-coinvariants of π_p.
For affine line arrangements whose cones are hypersolvable, we provide a minimal resolution of π_2, and study some of the properties of this module. For graphic arrangements associated to graphs with no 3-cycles, we obtain information on π_2, directly from the graph. The π_1-coinvariants of π_2 may distinguish the homotopy 2-types of arrangement complements with the same π_1, and the same Betti numbers in low degrees.

For a reduced monomial ideal B in R=k[X_1,...,X_n], we write H^i_B(R) as the union of {Ext^i(R/B^[d],R)}_d, where {B^[d]}_d are the "Frobenius powers of B". We describe H^i_B(R)_p, for every p in Z^n, in the spirit of the Stanley-Reisner theory. As a first application we give an isomorphism Tor_i(B', k)_p\iso Ext^{|p|-i}(R/B,R)_{-p} for all p in {0,1}^n, where B' is the Alexander dual ideal of B. We deduce a canonical filtration of Ext^i(R/B,R) with succesive quotients of the form R/(X_{j_1},...,X_{j_i}) suitably shifted, the multiplicities being computed from the Betti numbers of B'. As a final application, we give a topological description for the associated primes of Ext^i(R/B,R).

We use stratified Morse theory to construct a complex to compute the cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in a complex rank one local system. The linearization of this complex is shown to be the Orlik-Solomon algebra with the connection operator. Using this result, we establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement and the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra for any arrangement, and show that the latter are unions of subspace arrangements in general, resolving a conjecture of Falk. We also obtain lower bounds for the local system Betti numbers in terms of those of the Orlik-Solomon algebra, recovering a result of Libgober and Yuzvinsky. For certain local systems, our results provide new combinatorial upper bounds on the local system Betti numbers. These upper bounds enable us to prove that in non-resonant systems the cohomology is concentrated in the top dimension, without using resolution of singularities.
Alexander Duality for Monomial Ideals and Their Resolutions
Alexander duality has, in the past, made its way into commutative algebra through Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes. This has the disadvantage that one is limited to squarefree monomial ideals. The notion of Alexander duality is generalized here to arbitrary monomial ideals. It is shown how this duality is naturally expressed by Bass numbers, in their relations to the Betti numbers of a monomial ideal and its Alexander dual. Relative cohomological constructions on cellular complexes are shown to relate cellular free resolutions of a monomial ideal to free resolutions of its Alexander dual ideal. As an application, a new canonical resolution for monomial ideals is constructed.
