Dendriform structures arise naturally in algebraic combinatorics (where they allow, for example, the splitting of the shuffle product into two pieces) and through Rota-Baxter algebra structures (the latter appear, among others, in differential systems and in the renormalization process of pQFT). We prove new combinatorial identities in dendriform dialgebras that appear to be strongly related to classical phenomena, such as the combinatorics of Lyndon words, rewriting rules in Lie algebras, or the fine structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra. One of these identities is an abstract noncommutative, dendriform, generalization of the Bohnenblust-Spitzer identity and of an identity involving iterated Chen integrals due to C.S. Lam.

One of the most remarkable theorems in coding theory is Gleason's 1970 theorem about the weight enumerators of self-dual codes. In the past 36 years there have been hundreds of papers written about generalizations and applications of this theorem to different types of codes, always on a case-by-case basis. In this paper I state the theorem and then describe the far-reaching generalization that Gabriele Nebe, Eric Rains and I have developed which includes all the earlier generalizations at once. The full proof has just appeared in our book "Self-Dual Codes and Invariant Theory" (Springer, 2006). This paper is based on my talk at the conference on Algebraic Combinatorics in honor of Eiichi Bannai, held in Sendai, Japan, June 26-30, 2006.

Associated to every finite simplicial complex K there is a "moment-angle" finite CW-complex, Z_K; if K is a triangulation of a sphere, Z_K is a smooth, compact manifold. Building on work of Buchstaber, Panov, and Baskakov, we study the cohomology ring, the homotopy groups, and the triple Massey products of a moment-angle complex, relating these topological invariants to the algebraic combinatorics of the underlying simplicial complex. Applications to the study of non-formal manifolds and subspace arrangements are given.
The combinatorics of frieze patterns and Markoff numbers
This article, based on joint work with Gabriel Carroll, Andy Itsara, Ian Le, Gregg Musiker, Gregory Price, Dylan Thurston, and Rui Viana, presents a combinatorial model based on perfect matchings that explains the symmetries of the numerical arrays that Conway and Coxeter dubbed frieze patterns. This matchings model is a combinatorial interpretation of Fomin and Zelevinsky's cluster algebras of type A. One can derive from the matchings model an enumerative meaning for the Markoff numbers, and prove that the associated Laurent polynomials have positive coefficients as was conjectured (much more generally) by Fomin and Zelevinsky. Most of this research was conducted under the auspices of REACH (Research Experiences in Algebraic Combinatorics at Harvard).
Evolution on distributive lattices

We consider the directed evolution of a population after an intervention that has significantly altered the underlying fitness landscape. We model the space of genotypes as a distributive lattice; the fitness landscape is a real-valued function on that lattice. The risk of escape from intervention, i.e., the probability that the population develops an escape mutant before extinction, is encoded in the risk polynomial. Tools from algebraic combinatorics are applied to compute the risk polynomial in terms of the fitness landscape. In an application to the development of drug resistance in HIV, we study the risk of viral escape from treatment with the protease inhibitors ritonavir and indinavir.
Methods for the construction of generators of algebraic curvature tensors
We demonstrate the use of several tools from Algebraic Combinatorics such as Young tableaux, symmetry operators, the Littlewood-Richardson rule and discrete Fourier transforms of symmetric groups in investigations of algebraic curvature tensors.

We introduce and study a family of simplicial complexes associated to an arbitrary finite root system and a nonnegative integer parameter m. For m=1, our construction specializes to the (simplicial) generalized associahedra or, equivalently, to the cluster complexes for the cluster algebras of finite type.
Our computation of the face numbers and h-vectors of these complexes produces the enumerative invariants defined in other contexts by C.A.Athanasiadis, suggesting links to a host of well studied problems in algebraic combinatorics of finite Coxeter groups, root systems, and hyperplane arrangements.
Recurrences satisfied by the face numbers of our complexes lead to combinatorial algorithms for determining Coxeter-theoretic invariants. That is, starting with a Coxeter diagram of a finite Coxeter group, one can compute the Coxeter number, the exponents, and other classical invariants by a recursive procedure that only uses most basic graph-theoretic concepts applied to the input diagram.
In types A and B, we rediscover the constructions and results obtained by E.Tzanaki <math.CO/0501100>.

Let $K$ be an infinite field and $R=K[x_1,...,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring. Let $V=V_1, ..., V_m$ be a collection of vector spaces of linear forms. Denote by $A(V)$ the $K$-subalgebra of $R$ generated by the elements of the product $V_1... V_m$. Our goal is to investigate the properties of the algebra $A(V)$ and the relations with two problems in algebraic combinatorics White's and related conjectures on polymatroids and the study of integral posets.
Algebraic Combinatorics of Magic Squares
We describe how to construct and enumerate Magic squares, Franklin squares, Magic cubes, and Magic graphs as lattice points inside polyhedral cones using techniques from Algebraic Combinatorics. The main tools of our methods are the Hilbert Poincare series to enumerate lattice points and the Hilbert bases to generate lattice points. We define polytopes of magic labelings of graphs and digraphs, and give a description of the faces of the Birkhoff polytope as polytopes of magic labelings of digraphs.
Short formulas for algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors via Algebraic Combinatorics
We consider generators of algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors R' which can be constructed by a Young symmetrization of product tensors W*U or U*W, where W and U are covariant tensors of order 2 and 3. W is a symmetric or alternating tensor whereas U belongs to a class of the infinite set S of irreducible symmetry classes characterized by the partition (2,1). Using Computer Algebra we search for such generators whose coordinate representations are polynomials with a minimal number of summands. For a generic choice of the symmetry class of U we obtain lengths of 16 or 20 summands if W is symmetric or skew-symmetric, respectively. In special cases these numbers can be reduced to the minima 12 or 10. If these minima occur then U admits an index commutation symmetry. Furthermore minimal lengths are possible if U is formed from torsion-free covariant derivatives of symmetric or alternating 2-tensor fields. Foundation of our investigations is a theorem of S. A. Fulling, R. C. King, B. G. Wybourne and C. J. Cummins about a Young symmetrizer that generates the symmetry class of algebraic covariant derivative curvature tensors. Furthermore we apply ideals and idempotents in group rings C[S_r] and discrete Fourier transforms for symmetric groups S_r. For symbolic calculations we used the Mathematica packages Ricci and PERMS.
Vertices of Gelfand-Tsetlin Polytopes

This paper is a study of the polyhedral geometry of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns arising in the representation theory $\mathfrak{gl}_n \C$ and algebraic combinatorics. We present a combinatorial characterization of the vertices and a method to calculate the dimension of the lowest-dimensional face containing a given Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern.
As an application, we disprove a conjecture of Berenstein and Kirillov about the integrality of all vertices of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes. We can construct for each $n\geq5$ a counterexample, with arbitrarily increasing denominators as $n$ grows, of a non-integral vertex. This is the first infinite family of non-integral polyhedra for which the Ehrhart counting function is still a polynomial. We also derive a bound on the denominators for the non-integral vertices when $n$ is fixed.

Heaps of pieces were introduced by Viennot and have applications to algebraic combinatorics, theoretical computer science and statistical physics. In this paper, we how certain combinatorial properties of heaps studied by Fan and by Stembridge are closely related to the properties of a certain linear map $\partial_E$ associated to a heap $E$. We examine the relationship between $\partial_E$ and $\partial_F$ when $F$ is a subheap of $E$. This approach allows neat statements and proofs of results on certain associative algebras (generalized Temperley--Lieb algebras) that are otherwise tricky to prove. The key to the proof is to interpret the structure constants of the aforementioned algebras in terms of the maps $\partial$.
Feynman Diagrams in Algebraic Combinatorics
We show, in great detail, how the perturbative tools of quantum field theory allow one to rigorously obtain: a ``categorified'' Faa di Bruno type formula for multiple composition, an explicit formula for reversion and a proof of Lagrange-Good inversion, all in the setting of multivariable power series. We took great pains to offer a self-contained presentation that, we hope, will provide any mathematician who wishes, an easy access to the wonderland of quantum field theory.

The theme of this article is the algebraic combinatorics of leaf-labeled rooted binary trees and forests of such trees. The structure of a Hopf operad is defined on the vector spaces spanned by forests of leaf-labeled, rooted, binary trees. An explicit formula for the coproduct and its dual product is given, using a poset on forests.

We consider graded representations of the algebra NC of noncommutative symmetric functions on the Z-linear span of a graded poset P. The matrix coefficients of such a representation give a Hopf morphism from a Hopf algebra HP generated by the intervals of P to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. This provides a unified construction of quasi-symmetric generating functions from different branches of algebraic combinatorics, and this construction is useful for transferring techniques and ideas between these branches. In particular we show that the (Hopf) algebra of Billera and Liu related to Eulerian posets is dual to the peak (Hopf) algebra of Stembridge related to enriched P-partitions, and connect this to the combinatorics of the Schubert calculus for isotropic flag manifolds.
