Positivity of the basic hypergeometric series and the MacMahon identity
The basic hypergeometric series ${}_{n+1}ϕ_{n}$ whose upper and lower parameters are non-negative integer powers of $q$ satisfying a certain constraint can be, after a normalisation, computed as a positive polynomial. We derive three formulas for this polynomial. The first formula is a generalisation of the MacMahon identity in which an infinite binomial series is identified with a normalised generating function of des and maj statistics of multiset permutations. The second formula is a generating function of multiset permutations for the inversion statistic and a generalisation of the statistic mstc. The third formula is a finite sum containing $2n$ $q$-binomial coefficients.

Electrical Networks and Symplectic Invariants
Consider a finite planar graph with positive real edge weights and designated boundary vertices, called nodes. Such a graph is called a circular planar electrical network. A grove is a spanning forest in which every component contains at least one node. The connected components of a grove determine a partition of the nodes. We relate weighted grove counts to invariant theory for the symplectic group. To a planar electrical network $G$, we associate an $\mathrm{Sp}(2n)$-invariant tensor $Z_G$. For $\mathrm{Sp}(2)=\mathrm{SL}(2)$, we expand $Z_G$ in the Temperley--Lieb basis indexed by noncrossing matchings and relate its coefficients to the Kenyon--Wilson grove formulas. For $\mathrm{Sp}(4)$, we give reduction rules for superpositions of two groves and prove that the tensors indexed by $3$-noncrossing matchings form a basis of the space of $\mathrm{Sp}(4)$-invariant tensors. The coefficients of $Z_G$ in this basis are weighted counts of reduced double groves, up to normalization.
Diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices
Published in Advances in Mathematics 504 (2026) 111235 • View Publication • BIB
The enumeration of diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DSASMs) is studied, and a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of DSASMs of any fixed size, where the entries for the Pfaffian are positive integers given by simple binomial coefficient expressions. This result provides the first known case of an exact enumeration formula for an alternating sign matrix symmetry class in which a simple product formula does not seem to exist. Pfaffian formulae are also obtained for DSASM generating functions associated with several natural statistics, including the number of nonzero strictly upper triangular entries in a DSASM, the number of nonzero diagonal entries in a DSASM, and the column number of the unique 1 in the first row of a DSASM. The proofs of these results involve introducing a version of the six-vertex model whose configurations are in bijection with DSASMs of fixed size, and obtaining a Pfaffian expression for its partition function. Various related topics are also studied, involving diagonally symmetric permutation matrices, off-diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices, certain natural involutions on DSASMs, and the asymptotic enumeration of DSASMs and other classes of alternating sign matrices.

A Combinatorial Approach to the CUE Joint Moment Problem
In this paper, we give exact combinatorial expressions for all CUE joint moments on the unit circle, in the case that all exponents are even positive integers, yielding the corresponding asymptotics. We offer two equivalent expressions for these quantities: the first is a sum involving Kostka numbers; the second is related to counting integer matrices (magic squares). As an application of our results, we unify many results in the literature, which were previously disconnected. Moreover, we prove a conjecture of Basor et al. (2018) regarding an irregular conformal block structure.
The classical limit of the Magnus expansion
We uncover a connection between the classical limit of the Magnus expansion in quantum field theory and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. We study a cubic scalar theory describing a massive particle coupled to massless scalar quanta, which captures the propagator structure relevant to classical scattering in gravity and scalar QED. Using a Schwinger parametrisation of the massive propagators, we compute the classical limit of Magnus amplitudes at tree level in this theory. First, we prove that all hyperclassical contributions cancel at the level of the Schwinger proper-time integrand, before integration. Then, we show that the classical Magnus amplitude precisely matches expectations from worldline quantum field theory. Both results rely on cancellations of disconnected diagrams which we relate to the Hopf algebra, specifically to the action of the adjoint first Eulerian projector, which annihilates the shuffle products associated with disconnected contributions. Moreover, the worldline diagrams include generic directed-tree topologies, whereas the field-theory diagrams only include directed chains. The correspondence we establish between the two therefore leads to a new formula for generic Murua coefficients in terms of simpler directed chain coefficients. Finally, we observe a suggestive connection between Magnus amplitudes and the web-mixing matrices governing the exponentiation of multiple Wilson lines.

Elementary Askey-Wilson Functions
We present a determinantal evaluation formula for the very-well-poised ${}_8Φ_7$ basic hypergeometric Askey-Wilson function in terms of elementary functions. The formula in question is valid for discrete values of the four permutation-symmetric Askey-Wilson parameters; specifically, these consist of all quadruples of parameter values that are given, up to a sign, by powers $q^k$ with $k$ a positive integer or half-integer, in such a way that each of the four types (positive/negative sign, integer/half-integer power) occurs exactly once. The proof hinges on a product formula for an associated Cauchy-type determinant, which is of independent interest and is established here by elementary means using Krattenthaler's `identification of factors' method for determinant evaluations.

Dominant Young Diagrams in Matrix Models and Partial Deconfinement
We discuss dominant representations (or Young diagrams), in thermal matrix models with gauge symmetry from the perspective of partial deconfinement. We propose a prescription for defining the dominant representations for thermal matrix models with interaction terms. As an explicit example, we consider the large-$N$ Gaussian matrix model. We obtain the Vershik--Kerov--Logan--Shepp (VKLS) shape of the dominant Young diagrams through a new analytic saddle-point analysis based on a mapping of the representation theory of U($\infty$) to free fermions in two spacetime dimensions. This computation provides a direct derivation of the previously observed functional relation between the shape of the dominant Young diagrams and the eigenvalue distribution of the thermal holonomy: the position of the complex saddle point is naturally identified with the eigenvalue. The dominant Young diagrams admit a natural interpretation in terms of partial deconfinement: the number of rows in the dominant Young diagrams matches the size of the submatrix corresponding to the deconfined subsector.

Robustness of periodicity in Grover walks under a magnetic vector potential
We study the effect of magnetic vector potentials on periodic Grover walks on finite graphs. The magnetic vector potential is introduced through the framework of quantum graphs, which induces the Grover walk as a special case. We regard the magnetic vector potential as a perturbation of a periodic Grover walk and investigate the robustness of its periodicity. Our analysis reveals that the response to such perturbations depends on the spectral structure of the underlying graph. In particular, when the graph possesses at least one non-simple eigenvalue, we derive a Hermitian matrix that characterizes the robustness of its periodicity. As a consequence, for initial states orthogonal to the eigenspaces of the unperturbed Grover walk corresponding to the eigenvalues $\pm1$, we show that the perturbed dynamics is asymptotically described by a continuous-time quantum walk generated by this Hermitian matrix.

The Combinatorics of the Leading Root of the Partial Theta Function
Let $x_0(q)=-ξ_0(q)$ be the leading formal root of $Θ_0(x,q)=\sum_{n\geq0}x^nq^{\binom n2}$. I give here explicit combinatorial interpretations of the positive integer coefficients of $ξ_0(q)=1+q+2q^2+4q^3+9q^4+\cdots$ in terms of rooted trees enriched by stack polyominoes or certain Ferrers diagrams, weighted by total area. The two enrichments may be chosen independently at each level of the tree. A decomposition along the first-child path gives a combinatorial interpretation of $1-ξ_0^{-1}$. By reserving two successor slots at the root, I also obtain an interpretation of $1-ξ_0^{-2}$ and its zero coefficient in degree three. The sequence decomposition gives a Lyndon-word interpretation of the Euler-product exponents and proves their positivity and weak monotonicity. Finally, I derive the coefficient asymptotic $[q^n]ξ_0(q)\sim ξ_0(ρ)ρ^{-n}n^{-3/2}/(2\sqrtπ)$, where $ρ$ is the radius of convergence. The tree models are equinumerous with the braid classes studied by Flores and González-Meneses.

The skew Brownian permuton: a new universality class for random constrained permutations
Published in Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society 126 (6), pp. 1842-1883 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
We construct a new family of random permutons, called skew Brownian permuton, which describes the limits of several models of random constrained permutations. This family is parametrized by two real parameters. For a specific choice of the parameters, the skew Brownian permuton coincides with the Baxter permuton, i.e., the permuton limit of Baxter permutations. We prove that for another specific choice of the parameters, the skew Brownian permuton coincides with the biased Brownian separable permuton, a one-parameter family of permutons previously studied in the literature as the limit of uniform permutations in substitution-closed classes. This brings two different limiting objects under the same roof, identifying a new larger universality class. The skew Brownian permuton is constructed in terms of flows of solutions of certain stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by two-dimensional correlated Brownian excursions in the non-negative quadrant. We call these SDEs skew perturbed Tanaka equations because they are a mixture of the perturbed Tanaka equations and the equations encoding skew Brownian motions. We prove existence and uniqueness of (strong) solutions for these new SDEs. In addition, we show that some natural permutons arising from Liouville quantum gravity spheres decorated with two Schramm-Loewner evolution curves are skew Brownian permutons and such permutons cover almost the whole range of possible parameters. Some connections between constrained permutations and decorated planar maps have been investigated in the literature at the discrete level; this paper establishes this connection directly at the continuum level. Proving the latter result, we also give an SDE interpretation of some quantities related to SLE-decorated Liouville quantum gravity spheres.

Tensorial free convolution, semicircular, free Poisson and R-transform in high order
This work builds on our previous developments regarding a notion of freeness for tensors. We aim to establish a tensorial free convolution. We aggregate all connected rooted $p$-regular trace invariants with a fixed number of vertices into moments. First, we define higher-order analogues of the semicircular (or Wigner) law and the free Poisson (or Marčenko-Pastur) law, giving their moments and free cumulants. We prove the convergence of the moments of a Wishart-type tensor to the ones of the free Poisson law and recall the convergence of the moments of a Wigner tensor to the moments of the semicircular law. We also present a free Central Limit Theorem in this context. Next, we introduce a tensorial free convolution at the level of exponentially bounded moment and cumulant sequences.

A sandwich theorem for the spectrum of graph coverings
We show that all normal covers of a fixed finite graph $G$ sitting between the universal and maximal abelian covers share the same atomic part of their spectral measures. We give an explicit double formula for the mass of atoms which generalises and unifies known results on universal covering trees and maximal abelian covers. It also proves an extension of a conjecture in physics literature on hyperbolic lattices. Moreover, we also establish the logarithmic Hölder regularity of the continuous part of the spectral measures. Our proof combines techniques from von Neumann algebras, matching theory and the monotone labelling method. In an appendix, we prove a converse generalised Gallai-Edmonds structural theorem which might be of independent interest.

Combinatorics and loop equations for antisymmetrised and Hermitised matrix product ensembles
The order $m$ antisymmetrised matrix product ensemble is represented by the product $X_1^T\cdots X_m^TJX_m\cdots X_1$, where $X_1,\ldots,X_m$ are independent real Ginibre matrices and $J$ is the elementary antisymmetric matrix, while the order $m$ Hermitised matrix product ensemble is represented by $X_1^\dagger\cdots X_m^\dagger HX_1\cdots X_m$, where $X_1,\ldots,X_m$ are now independent complex Ginibre matrices and $H$ is a Hermitian matrix drawn from the Gaussian unitary ensemble. These ensembles have recently been shown to be related to certain Muttalib--Borodin ensembles and integrals of Harish-Chandra--Itzykson--Zuber type, thereby motivating further investigation into their eigenvalue statistics. In this work, we construct ribbon graphs and constellations that are enumerated by the mixed cumulants of these ensembles and give loop equation characterisations for the generating functions of said cumulants when $m=1$.

Explicit enumeration and large-valence asymptotics of even-valent maps
Let $\mathscr{N}_g(2ν,j)$ denote the number of connected labelled $2ν$-valent maps of genus $g$ with $j$ vertices. Explicit bivariate formulae for $\mathscr{N}_g(2ν,j)$ have been available only in the planar and toroidal cases. Using a structural formula of Ercolani et al (2023), we translate the problem of determining an explicit bivariate formula for $\mathscr{N}_g(2ν,j)$, $g \geq 2$, to finding finitely many counts with a fixed number of vertices. For $g=2,3$ and $4$ we determine these counts using the associated orthogonal polynomials, yielding explicit bivariate formulae for $\mathscr{N}_g(2ν,j)$ in these genera. Furthermore, the same method applies for every $g\ge5$ at the cost of additional computation. From these formulae we obtain the leading-order asymptotics of $\mathscr{N}_g(2ν,j)$ as $ν\to\infty$ for $g=2,3,4$, and we conjecture the structure of these formulae in general genus. In addition, we establish an analogous reduction to finitely many counts, derive explicit formulae and large-valence asymptotics, and formulate corresponding conjectures for two-legged even-valent maps.
A Hopf Algebraic Theory of the Quantum Magnusian
We develop a Hopf-algebraic theory of the graph coefficients arising in the quantum Magnus expansion. At the classical level, the graph expansion is governed by directed trees, whereas its quantum counterpart involves loop graphs, multiple edges, and different types of edge data. We introduce a contraction Hopf algebra of mixed quivers containing these physical diagrams and closed under contraction. On the Hopf subalgebra spanned by quivers, we define a character $e$ from normalized linear-extension data and a tadpole prescription, and let $ω$ be its convolution inverse. Our main result is a universal closed formula for the connected function $ω_c$ on every finite quiver. The formula is a finite sum over ordered set partitions of the vertex set and is valid without acyclicity or simplicity assumptions. We also give a local characterization: a two-vertex contraction identity, together with tadpole factorization, vanishing on disconnected graphs, and boundary data, determines $ω_c$ uniquely. For acyclic quivers, the general formula reduces to a permutation formula whose coefficients depend only on descent numbers. We derive the same formula independently from the quantum Magnus expansion via operator products and Wick contractions, showing that its physical graph coefficients are governed by the convolution structure of the contraction Hopf algebra. As further consequences, we obtain a refined quantum Murua formula and orientation-sum identities related to Tutte and chromatic polynomials.

Quiver BPS Indices from Crystal Profiles
Published in JHEP09(2026)244 • View Publication • BIB
We derive new exact formulae for elliptic genera in two spacetime dimensions with $\mathcal{N}\ge 2$ supercharges, as well as their one- and zero-dimensional counterparts (for Witten indices and matrix-model partition functions). Our results are written as a discrete sum over geometric/combinatorial structures of crystals introduced previously by the authors. The contribution from each crystal may be expressed in terms of the boundary data of a finite substructure of the crystal called the molecules. Our results provide vast generalisations of the celebrated Nekrasov partition function enumerated by the Young diagrams, and uncover new combinatorics underlying the crystal melting. We also analyse the thermodynamic limit of crystals arising from two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theories associated with toric Calabi-Yau fourfolds, where a projection of the Calabi-Yau geometry emerges in the limit.

Methods of free probability
This is an introduction to free probability, with all the needed preliminaries included. We first discuss the most basic noncommuting variables, namely the usual matrices, followed by the basic random matrices, and with a look into Lie groups too. Then we present, following Voiculescu, the main concepts and tools of free probability, notably with the various limiting theorems that can be obtained. We then go on a more technical discussion, featuring cumulants, functional transforms and group theory, on the correspondence between classical and free. Finally, we discuss matrix modeling questions for the various more specialized free laws and objects that can be imagined.

Generators of stability-preserving semigroups, spectral gaps, and classical ground-state computation
We classify the generators of stability-preserving semigroups on polynomial spaces with bounded coordinate degrees. The generators have differential order at most two, with principal coefficients characterized by low-degree nonnegativity conditions. In disk coordinates, positive degree damping gives strict zero-freeness and a sharp spectral gap, extending the Hermitian gap of Bravyi, Gosset, Liu, and Wong to complex generators. The resulting analytic domain yields deterministic classical algorithms for ground energies and stable product-state queries for bounded-degree Suzuki-Fisher Hamiltonians with bounded local strength and fixed positive fields. Field perturbation gives zero-field energy-value approximation schemes for bounded-degree unweighted EPR and bipartite Quantum MaxCut. We also prove that, up to scalars, the Hermitian qubit Hamiltonians whose full Gibbs tensors are Lee-Yang at every temperature in a fixed basis are precisely the edgewise phase-rotated Suzuki-Fisher family. With strictly positive longitudinal fields, these tensors are zero-free on a polydisk of radius greater than one at each positive inverse temperature. These two statements answer questions of Wong, Bravyi, Gosset, and Liu. Degree-preserving, coefficient-positive stability semigroups have concave sector growth rates, yielding token-graph concavity. We also give a counterexample to a proposed explicit ground-state radius.

Tropicalization of super Gromov-Witten invariants
We show that genus-0, $n$ Neveu-Schwarz marked, super Gromov-Witten invariants of a convex, toric variety $X$ can be defined and computed using tropical geometry. When $X$ is a point, the tropical, super Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$ are descendant invariants on the moduli space of tropical curves. When $X$ is a general convex, toric variety, we define a procedure that computes the tropical, inverse Euler class of the SUSY normal bundle $\overline{N}_{n, β} \rightarrow \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}(X, β)$, under the assumption that $\overline{N}_{n, β}$ is in some sense locally tropicalizable. We define the tropical, genus-0, $n$ Neveu-Schwarz marked, super Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$, and show that the definition recovers the tropical, super Gromov-Witten invariants of a point. We compute a tropical, super Gromov-Witten invariant of $\mathbb{P}^1$.

Down-the-middle isometries for the Airy and KPZ sheets
We find a new coupling between the Airy sheet $\mathcal{S}$ and the Airy line ensemble $\{ \mathcal{A}_n \}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$, which we call the down-the-middle isometry. In this coupling, the Airy sheet is encoded by last passage values that start at $\mathcal{A}_k(0)$ for some $k \in \mathbb{N}$ and end on the top line $\mathcal{A}_1$. Using this coupling, we give a new construction of the (extended) Airy sheet as a scaling limit of Brownian last passage percolation and study coalescence of geodesics in the directed landscape. This coupling extends to discrete polymers and last passage percolation models, as well as to the KPZ line ensemble and KPZ sheet.
