Power-law bounds for increasing subsequences in Brownian separable permutons and homogeneous sets in Brownian cographons
Published in Advances in Mathematics, vol. 439, 2024, article 109480 • View Publication • BIB
The Brownian separable permutons are a one-parameter family -- indexed by $p\in(0,1)$ -- of universal limits of random constrained permutations. We show that for each $p\in (0,1)$, there are explicit constants $1/2 < α_*(p) \leq β^*(p) < 1$ such that the length of the longest increasing subsequence in a random permutation of size $n$ sampled from the Brownian separable permuton is between $n^{α_*(p) - o(1)}$ and $n^{β^*(p) + o(1)}$ with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$. In the symmetric case $p=1/2$, we have $α_*(p) \approx 0.812$ and $β^*(p)\approx 0.975$. We present numerical simulations which suggest that the lower bound $α_*(p)$ is close to optimal in the whole range $p\in(0,1)$. Our results work equally well for the closely related Brownian cographons. In this setting, we show that for each $p\in (0,1)$, the size of the largest clique (resp. independent set) in a random graph on $n$ vertices sampled from the Brownian cographon is between $n^{α_*(p) - o(1)}$ and $n^{β^*(p) + o(1)}$ (resp. $n^{α_*(1-p) - o(1)}$ and $n^{β^*(1-p) + o(1)}$) with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$. Our proofs are based on the analysis of a fragmentation process embedded in a Brownian excursion introduced by Bertoin (2002). We expect that our techniques can be extended to prove similar bounds for uniform separable permutations and uniform cographs.
Counting mobiles by integrable systems
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Comb. Phys. Interact. 13 (2026), no 3, pp. 505-577 • View Publication • BIB
Mobiles are a particular class of decorated plane trees which serve as codings for planar maps. Here we address the question of enumerating mobiles in their most general flavor, in correspondence with planar Eulerian (i.e., bicolored) maps. We show that the generating functions for such mobiles satisfy a number of recursive equations which lie in the field of integrable systems, leading us to explicit expressions for these generating functions as ratios of particular determinants. In particular we recover known results for mobiles associated with uncolored maps and prove some conjectured formulas for the generating functions of mobiles associated with $p$-constellations.

On the geometry of uniform meandric systems
Published in Communications in Mathematical Physics, vol. 404, no. 1, 2023, pp. 439-494 • View Publication • BIB
A meandric system of size $n$ is the set of loops formed from two arc diagrams (non-crossing perfect matchings) on $\{1,\dots,2n\}$, one drawn above the real line and the other below the real line. A uniform random meandric system can be viewed as a random planar map decorated by a Hamiltonian path (corresponding to the real line) and a collection of loops (formed by the arcs). Based on physics heuristics and numerical evidence, we conjecture that the scaling limit of this decorated random planar map is given by an independent triple consisting of a Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) sphere with parameter $γ=\sqrt 2$, a Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curve with parameter $κ=8$, and a conformal loop ensemble (CLE) with parameter $κ=6$. We prove several rigorous results which are consistent with this conjecture. In particular, a uniform meandric system admits loops of nearly macroscopic graph-distance diameter with high probability. Furthermore, a.s., the uniform infinite meandric system with boundary has no infinite path. But, a.s., its boundary-modified version has a unique infinite path whose scaling limit is conjectured to be chordal SLE$_6$.

More on Rainbow Cliques in Edge-Colored Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In an edge-colored graph $G$, a rainbow clique $K_k$ is a $k$-complete subgraph in which all the edges have distinct colors. Let $e(G)$ and $c(G)$ be the number of edges and colors in $G$, respectively. In this paper, we show that for any $\varepsilon>0$, if $e(G)+c(G) \geq (1+\frac{k-3}{k-2}+2\varepsilon) {n\choose 2}$ and $k\geq 3$, then for sufficiently large $n$, the number of rainbow cliques $K_k$ in $G$ is $Ω(n^k)$. We also characterize the extremal graphs $G$ without a rainbow clique $K_k$, for $k=4,5$, when $e(G)+c(G)$ is maximum. Our results not only address existing questions but also complete the findings of Ehard and Mohr (Ehard and Mohr, Rainbow triangles and cliques in edge-colored graphs. {\it European Journal of Combinatorics, 84:103037,2020}).

Characterisation of the Set of Ground States of Uniformly Chaotic Finite-Range Lattice Models
Published • View Publication • BIB
Chaotic dependence on temperature refers to the phenomenon of divergence of Gibbs measures as the temperature approaches a certain value. Models with chaotic behaviour near zero temperature have multiple ground states, none of which are stable. We study the class of uniformly chaotic models, that is, those in which, as the temperature goes to zero, every choice of Gibbs measures accumulates on the entire set of ground states. We characterise the possible sets of ground states of uniformly chaotic finite-range models up to computable homeomorphisms. Namely, we show that the set of ground states of every model with finite-range and rational-valued interactions is topologically closed and connected, and belongs to the class $Π_2$ of the arithmetical hierarchy. Conversely, every $Π_2$-computable, topologically closed and connected set of probability measures can be encoded (via a computable homeomorphism) as the set of ground states of a uniformly chaotic two-dimensional model with finite-range rational-valued interactions.
Flattened Stirling Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recall that a Stirling permutation is a permutation on the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots,n,n\}$ such that any numbers appearing between repeated values of $i$ must be greater than $i$. We call a Stirling permutation ``flattened'' if the leading terms of maximal chains of ascents (called runs) are in weakly increasing order. Our main result establishes a bijection between flattened Stirling permutations and type $B$ set partitions of $\{0,\pm1,\pm2,\ldots,\pm (n-1)\}$, which are known to be enumerated by the Dowling numbers, and we give an independent proof of this fact. We also determine the maximal number of runs for any flattened Stirling permutation, and we enumerate flattened Stirling permutations with a small number of runs or with two runs of equal length. We conclude with some conjectures and generalizations worthy of future investigation.

Forest polynomials and the class of the permutahedral variety
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a basis of the polynomial ring that we call forest polynomials. This family of polynomials is indexed by a combinatorial structure called indexed forests and permits several definitions, one of which involves flagged P-partitions. As such, these polynomials have a positive expansion in the basis of slide polynomials. By a novel insertion procedure that may be viewed as a generalization of the Sylvester correspondence we establish that Schubert polynomials decompose positively in terms of forest polynomials. Our insertion procedure involves a correspondence on words which allows us to show that forest polynomials multiply positively. We proceed to show that forest polynomials are a particularly convenient basis in regards to studying the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo the ideal of positive degree quasisymmetric polynomials. This aspect allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative integral description for the Schubert class expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in terms of a parking procedure. We study the associated combinatorics in depth and introduce a multivariate extension of mixed Eulerian numbers.

A shape theorem for exploding sandpiles
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 34(1A): 714-742 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
We study scaling limits of exploding Abelian sandpiles using ideas from percolation and front propagation in random media. We establish sufficient conditions under which a limit shape exists and show via a family of counterexamples that convergence may not occur in general. A corollary of our proof is a simple criteria for determining if a sandpile is explosive; this strengthens a result of Fey, Levine, and Peres (2010).

Large deviation principle for random permutations
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, 2024(3), 2138-2191 • View Publication • BIB
We derive a large deviation principle for random permutations induced by probability measures of the unit square, called permutons. These permutations are called $μ$-random permutations. We also introduce and study a new general class of models of random permutations, called Gibbs permutation models, which combines and generalizes $μ$-random permutations and the celebrated Mallows model for permutations. Most of our results hold in the general setting of Gibbs permutation models. We apply the tools that we develop to the case of $μ$-random permutations conditioned to have an atypical proportion of patterns. Several results are made more concrete in the specific case of inversions. For instance, we prove the existence of at least one phase transition for a generalized version of the Mallows model where the base measure is non-uniform. This is in contrast with the results of Starr (2009, 2018) on the (standard) Mallows model, where the absence of phase transition, i.e., phase uniqueness, was proven. Our results naturally lead us to investigate a new notion of permutons, called conditionally constant permutons, which generalizes both pattern-avoiding and pattern-packing permutons. We describe some properties of conditionally constant permutons with respect to inversions. The study of conditionally constant permutons for general patterns seems to be a challenging problem.

On the Turán Number of Generalized Theta Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Θ_{k_1,\cdots,k_\ell}$ denote the generalized theta graph, which consists of $\ell$ internally disjoint paths with lengths $k_1,\cdots, k_{\ell}$, connecting two fixed vertices. We estimate the corresponding extremal number $\text{ex}(n,Θ_{k_1,\cdots,k_\ell})$. When the lengths of all paths have the same parity and at most one path has length 1, $\text{ex}(n,Θ_{k_1,\cdots,k_\ell})$ is $O(n^{1+1/k^\ast})$, where $2k^\ast$ is the length of the smallest cycle in $Θ_{k_1,\cdots,k_\ell}$. We also establish matching lower bound in the particular case of $\text{ex}(n,Θ_{3,5,5})$.

Baxter permuton and Liouville quantum gravity
Published in Probability Theory and Related Fields, vol. 187, no. 3-4, 2023, pp. 869-941 • View Publication • BIB
The Baxter permuton is a random probability measure on the unit square which describes the scaling limit of uniform Baxter permutations. We find an explict formula for the expectation of the Baxter permuton, i.e.\ the density of its intensity measure. This answers a question of Dokos and Pak (2014). We also prove that all pattern densities of the Baxter permuton are strictly positive, distinguishing it from other permutons arising as scaling limits of pattern-avoiding permutations. Our proofs rely on a recent connection between the Baxter permuton and Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) coupled with the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE). The method works equally well for a two-parameter generalization of the Baxter permuton recently introduced by the first author, except that the density is not as explicit. This new family of permutons, called \emph{skew Brownian permuton}, describes the scaling limit of a number of random constrained permutations. We finally observe that in the LQG/SLE framework, the expected proportion of inversions in a skew Brownian permuton equals $\frac{π-2θ}{2π}$ where $θ$ is the so-called imaginary geometry angle between a certain pair of SLE curves.

Supermagic labeling of $C_n\Box C_m$
Published • View Publication • BIB
A supermagic labeling (often also called supermagic labeling) of a graph $G(V,E)$ with $|E|=k$ is a bijection from $E$ to the set of first $k$ positive integers such that the sum of labels of all incident edges of every vertex $x\in V$ is equal to the same integer $c$. An existence of a supermagic labeling of Cartesian product of two cycles, $C_{n}\Box C_m$ for $n,m\geq4$ and both $n,m$ even and for any $C_n\Box C_n$ with $n\geq3$ was proved by Ivančo. Ivančo also conjectured that such labeling is possible for any $C_n\Box C_m$ with $n,m\geq3$. We prove his conjecture for all $n,m$ odd that are not relatively prime.

Spectrum of $3$-uniform $6$- and $9$-cycle systems over $K_v^{(3)}-I$
Published in Discrete Mathematics 347 (3), 2024, 113782 • View Publication • BIB
We consider edge decompositions of $K_v^{(3)}-I$, the complete 3-uniform hypergraph of order $v$ minus a 1-factor (parallel class, packing of $v/3$ disjoint edges). We prove that a decomposition into tight 6-cycles exists if and only if $v\equiv 0,3,6$ (mod 12) and $v\geq 6$; and a decomposition into tight 9-cycles exists for all $v\geq 9$ divisible by 3. These results are complementary to the theorems of Akin et al. [Discrete Math. 345 (2022)] and Bunge et al. [Australas. J. Combin. 80 (2021)].

Arithmetical Hierarchy of the Besicovitch-Stability of Noisy Tilings
Published in Theory of Computing Systems (2023) • View Publication • BIB
The purpose of this article is to study the algorithmic complexity of the Besicovitch stability of noisy subshifts of finite type, a notion studied in a previous article. First, we exhibit an unstable aperiodic tiling, and then see how it can serve as a building block to implement several reductions from classical undecidable problems on Turing machines. It will follow that the question of stability of subshifts of finite type is undecidable, and the strongest lower bound we obtain in the arithmetical hierarchy is $Π_2$-hardness. Lastly, we prove that this decision problem, which requires to quantify over an uncountable set of probability measures, has a $Π_4$ upper bound.

On the sum of chemical reactions
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is standard in chemistry to represent a sequence of reactions by a single overall reaction, often called a complex reaction in contrast to an elementary reaction. Photosynthesis $6 \text{CO}_2+6 \text{H}_2\text{O} \to \ \text{C}_6\text{H}_{12}\text{O}_6$ $+\ 6 \text{O}_2$ is an example of such complex reaction. We introduce a mathematical operation that corresponds to summing two chemical reactions. Specifically, we define an associative and non-communicative operation on the product space $\mathbb{N}_0^n\times \mathbb{N}_0^n$ (representing the reactant and the product of a chemical reaction, respectively). The operation models the overall effect of two reactions happening in succession, one after the other. We study the algebraic properties of the operation and apply the results to stochastic reaction networks, in particular to reachability of states, and to reduction of reaction networks.

On the inducibility problem for random Cayley graphs of abelian groups with a few deleted vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a $k$-vertex graph $H$ and an integer $n$, what are the $n$-vertex graphs with the maximum number of induced copies of $H$? This question is closely related to the inducibility problem introduced by Pippenger and Golumbic in 1975, which asks for the maximum possible fraction of $k$-vertex subsets of an $n$-vertex graph that induce a copy of $H$. Huang, Lee and the first author proved that for a random $k$-vertex graph $H$, almost surely the $n$-vertex graphs maximizing the number of induced copies of $H$ are the balanced iterated blow-ups of $H$. In this paper, we consider the case where the graph $H$ is obtained by deleting a small number of vertices from a random Cayley graph $\widetilde{H}$ of an abelian group. We prove that in this case, almost surely all $n$-vertex graphs maximizing the number of induced copies of $H$ are balanced iterated blow-ups of $\widetilde{H}$.
Equivalence between spectral properties of graphs with and without loops
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we introduce a spectra preserving relation between graphs with loops and graphs without loops. This relation is achieved in two steps. First, by generalizing spectra results got on (m, k)-stars to a wider class of graphs, the (m, k, s)-stars with or without loops. Second, by defining a covering space of graphs with loops that allows to remove the presence of loops by increasing the graph dimension. The equivalence of the two class of graphs allows to study graph with loops as simple graph without loosing information.

Popular progression differences in vector spaces II
Published in Discrete Analysis, 2019:16, 39 pp • View Publication • BIB
Green used an arithmetic analogue of Szemerédi's celebrated regularity lemma to prove the following strengthening of Roth's theorem in vector spaces. For every $α>0$, $β<α^3$, and prime number $p$, there is a least positive integer $n_p(α,β)$ such that if $n \geq n_p(α,β)$, then for every subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ of density at least $α$ there is a nonzero $d$ for which the density of three-term arithmetic progressions with common difference $d$ is at least $β$. We determine for $p \geq 19$ the tower height of $n_p(α,β)$ up to an absolute constant factor and an additive term depending only on $p$. In particular, if we want half the random bound (so $β=α^3/2$), then the dimension $n$ required is a tower of twos of height $Θ\left((\log p) \log \log (1/α)\right)$. It turns out that the tower height in general takes on a different form in several different regions of $α$ and $β$, and different arguments are used both in the upper and lower bounds to handle these cases.

Eulerian triangulations: two-point function and hull perimeter statistics
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Comb. Phys. Interact. 6 (2019), no. 1, pp. 1-42 • View Publication • BIB
We present a new derivation of the distance-dependent two-point function for planar Eulerian triangulations and give expressions for more refined generating functions where we also control hull perimeters. These results are obtained in the framework of a new recursion relation for slice generating functions and extend similar results obtained recently for triangulations and quadrangulations. A number of explicit formulas are given for the statistics of hull perimeters in infinitely large random planar Eulerian triangulations.
