The Second-Order Augmented Zarankiewicz Number
The second-order Zarankiewicz number $z_2(m,n)$ and the biquadratic sum-of-squares rank $\mathrm{BSR}(m,n)$ are related by the unconditional hierarchy \[ \mathrm{BSR}(m,n)\ \ge\ z_2(m,n)\ \ge\ z_{SL}(m,n)\ \ge\ z_{RL}(m,n) \ \ge\ z_{wL}(m,n)\ \ge\ z(m,n). \] We introduce the \emph{second-order augmented Zarankiewicz number} $z_{2A}(m,n)$, obtained from $z_2(m,n)$ by deleting the requirement that the configuration be \emph{limited}, so that \[ \mathrm{BSR}(m,n)\ \ge\ z_{2A}(m,n)\ \ge\ z_2(m,n). \] Although the defining class is enlarged, $z_{2A}$ still obeys the universal cell bound of Löfberg and Qi, because that bound uses only the \(C_4\)-freeness of the one-edge graph. We prove \[ \mathrm{BSR}(4,4)\ \ge\ z_{2A}(4,4)\ =\ 11\ >\ 10\ =\ z_2(4,4) \ =\ z_{RL}(4,4), \] the first recorded separation between the second-order number and its augmented variant. This result also gives a better lower bound for $\mathrm{BSR}(4,4)$. The lower bound is witnessed by an explicit non-limited $4\times4$ configuration of displayed length $11$ whose recursive-line closure satisfies $(\mathrm{RW}3^+)$; the matching upper bound excludes $12$ by the universal cell bound together with an exact finite classification of the $161$ twelve-square configurations, and \(z_2(4,4)=z_{RL}(4,4)=10\) is the exact value of Xu and Yan.

Exact Second-Order Zarankiewicz Numbers for Complete-Graph Incidence Families
For $n\ge6$, $m=\binom n2$, let the complete-graph incidence family on $K_n$ have the vertices of $K_n$ as columns, its edges as rows, and the incidence graph as one-edge graph. The universal cell bound of Löfberg and Qi gives $z_2(m,n)\le Z(n):=\lfloor n(n-1)(n+2)/4\rfloor$. We implement the nested one-factorization construction of that family and determine exactly what it certifies. For $n=2q$ with $q$ an odd prime, $q\ge5$, the construction has no hole and the cross-factor transfer equations apply verbatim, giving $z_2=z_{SL}=z_{RL}=Z(n)$; $n=6$ is settled by a separate cyclic witness. For odd $n=2p+1$ the near-perfect one-factorization yields Hamilton paths closed into odd cycles, and the transfer argument breaks: that scheme certifies only $R(G_p)\le Z(n)$. The orders $n=7,8,9,12,13,16,17,18,20,21$ are settled by explicit configurations of a different shape, each attaining the cell bound and satisfying $(\mathrm{RW}3^+)$, obtained from a larger configuration by deleting vertex stars and repairing the restricted grid. At each of these orders $z_2=z_{SL}=z_{RL}=Z(n)$; all remaining orders are conjectural. The first settled order $n=7$ is the only one whose grid has a hole, grounded by a zero-companion rule. Machine-readable configurations and a certificate checker accompany the paper.

Is the Signed Zarankiewicz Number the Same as the Recursive-line Zarankiewicz Number?
Löfberg and Qi introduced the second order Zarankiewicz number \(z_2\), the recursive-line Zarankiewicz number \(z_{RL}\), and the signed Zarankiewicz number \(z_{SL}\) for doubly simple biquadratic forms. It was shown that \[ z_2(m,n)\ge z_{SL}(m,n)\ge z_{RL}(m,n) \] for all \(m\) and \(n\). However, there was no evidence that there exist particular \(m\) and \(n\) such that \(z_{SL}(m,n)>z_{RL}(m,n)\). The motivation for introducing \(z_{SL}\) was as follows: during the study of the exceptional case \(m=15\), \(n=6\), Löfberg and Qi showed that \[ z_2(15,6)=z_{SL}(15,6)=60, \] but the exact value of \(z_{RL}(15,6)\) was unknown then. In this paper we show that \[ z_{RL}(15,6)=60. \] This eliminates the motivation for introducing \(z_{SL}\). Whether \(z_{SL}(m,n)=z_{RL}(m,n)\) in general remains an open problem. Recently, Lebedev presented an explicit construction separating the augmented Zarankiewicz number \(z_A\) from the limited augmented Zarankiewicz number \(z_L\) at \(m=n=1893\). We hope that the separation problem for \(z_{SL}\) and \(z_{RL}\) can also be solved. We also present the exact values of \(z_{RL}(m,6)\) for \(6\le m\le 16\).

Second Order Zarankiewicz Number
We introduce the \emph{second order Zarankiewicz number} $z_2(m,n)$ for irreducible doubly simple biquadratic forms with $|E_1|=z(m,n)$, together with the intermediate recursive-line and signed parameters $z_{RL}(m,n)$ and $z_{SL}(m,n)$. They satisfy the unconditional hierarchy \[ \operatorname{BSR}(m,n) \ge z_2(m,n) \ge z_{SL}(m,n) \ge z_{RL}(m,n) \ge z_{wL}(m,n) \ge z(m,n), \] where $z_{RL}$ is defined by the strengthened recursive rectangle criterion $(RW3^+)$ together with the conditions $(S)$ and $C_4$-freeness of $G_1$, and $z_{SL}$ is defined by the signed criterion $(RW3^\pm)$. We show that $(RW3^+)$ is sound and strictly weaker than the literal weak cross-cell test $(W3)$ on the weak-admissible class, and that $(RW3^\pm)$ is likewise sound. At the smallest four-column cases we obtain \[ z_2(5,4)=z_{SL}(5,4)=z_{RL}(5,4)=13>12=z_{wL}(5,4), \] and \[ z_2(6,4)=z_{SL}(6,4)=z_{RL}(6,4)=16>14=z_{wL}(6,4). \] In three columns this yields \[ z_2(m,3)=z_{RL}(m,3)=2m \qquad \text{for all } m\ge 3, \] with strict separation from $z_{wL}(m,3)$ for every $m\ge10$, and exact gap $\lfloor(m-3)/3\rfloor$ for $m\ge16$. Further finite computations give $z_{RL}(5,5)=17$, $z_{RL}(7,4)=19$, and $z_{RL}(7,7)\ge32>28=z_{wL}(7,7)$. Along $N=2p$ with $p$ an odd prime, we obtain the cubic asymptotic separation \[ z_2\!\left(\binom{N}{2},N\right)-z_{wL}\!\left(\binom{N}{2},N\right)\ge \left(\frac{1}{16}-o(1)\right)N^3. \] For the exceptional incidence case $p=3$ we prove $z_{SL}(15,6)=z_2(15,6)=60$. Concurrent work of Chen and Chen, using the recursive-line definition introduced here, incorporates the finite recursive-line values of this manuscript and establishes further exact four-column values together with an eventual formula for all $m\ge15$. The conjectural equality $z_2=z_{RL}$ is supported by the exact two-column, three-column, four-column, and odd-prime incidence families.

Weak Limited Augmented Zarankiewicz Number
We introduce the weak limited augmented Zarankiewicz number $z_{WL}(m,n)$ by relaxing the generalized cycle-free conditions previously used to establish lower bounds for the biquadratic sum-of-squares (SOS) rank. The key innovation is a recursive weakening of Condition~2: we define a dependency graph on nondegenerate 2-edges and require that it be acyclic, together with a technical condition that if a nondegenerate 2-edge has both opposite cells occupied by 1-edges, then the associated biquadratic form must decompose as a direct sum of independent blocks. We prove that these weak conditions suffice for irreducibility of the associated doubly simple biquadratic form, yielding the inequality chain $$ \operatorname{BSR}(m,n) \ge z_{WL}(m,n) \ge z_L(m,n) \ge z(m,n), $$ where $\operatorname{BSR}(m,n)$ is the maximum SOS rank among all $m\times n$ biquadratic forms, $z_L(m,n)$ is the limited augmented Zarankiewicz number, and $z(m,n)$ is the classical Zarankiewicz number. As a concrete application, we construct a $5 \times 3$ augmented graph with two 2-edges that satisfies the weak conditions but violates the original definition. This establishes $$ z_{WL}(5,3) \ge 10, $$ improving the previous limited augmented value \(z_L(5,3)=9\). Consequently, $$ \operatorname{BSR}(5,3) \ge 10. $$

Three-Edges and the SOS Rank of Biquadratic Forms: Extending the Augmented Zarankiewicz Framework
The limited augmented Zarankiewicz number $z_L(m,n)$ corresponds to 2-edges $(i,j;k,l)$ in a $C_4$-free bipartite graph, each representing a square $(x_i y_j + x_k y_l)^2$. We introduce \emph{3-edges} $(i,j;k,l;p,q)$ representing $(x_i y_j + x_k y_l + x_p y_q)^2$, and define the numbers $z_{3L}(m,n)$ and $z_{3A}(m,n)$ by forbidding generalized $C_4$ cycles. We prove that for any 3-edge-augmented graph without such cycles, the corresponding doubly simple biquadratic form has SOS rank equal to the total number of edge contributions. As applications, we show $z_{3L}(5, 3) = 10$, $z_{3L}(6,4) \ge 16$ and $z_{3L}(5,5) \ge 16$, improving the known bounds $z_L(5, 3) = 9$, $z_L(6,4)=14$ and $z_L(5,5)=14$. The constructions in the $5 \times 5$ and $6 \times 4$ cases are naturally explained as 3-edges, providing a unified combinatorial framework for SOS rank lower bounds beyond the limited augmented Zarankiewicz number.

The Limited Augmented Zarankiewicz Number
Published • View Publication • BIB
The limited augmented Zarankiewicz number $z_L(m,n)$ satisfies $\operatorname{BSR}(m,n) \ge z_L(m,n) \ge z(m,n)$, where $\operatorname{BSR}(m,n)$ is the maximum SOS rank of $m \times n$ biquadratic forms and $z(m,n)$ is the classical Zarankiewicz number. We determine the exact values of $z_L(m,n)$ for all $m,n \le 5$. In particular, we prove that $z_L(5,3) = 9$, $z_L(5,4) = 12$, and $z_L(5,5) = 14$, confirming that previously known lower bounds are tight. Moreover, by a lifting construction we obtain $z_L(6,5) \ge 17$, which is the first example where $z_L(m,n) \ge z(m,n) + 3$, demonstrating that the gap can grow with the dimensions. The analysis proceeds by enumerating all non-isomorphic extremal $C_4$-free graphs for each parameter set and systematically checking the admissible 2-edge augmentations. Our results reveal that the augmentability of a $C_4$-free graph depends critically on its specific structure, not merely on its edge count. These findings provide improved lower bounds for $\operatorname{BSR}(m,n)$ and offer a foundation for future investigations of larger parameters.

Spectral Properties of Dual Unit Gain Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study dual quaternion and dual complex unit gain graphs and their spectral properties in a unified frame of dual unit gain graphs. Unit dual quaternions represent rigid movements in the 3D space, and have wide applications in robotics and computer graphics. Dual complex numbers found application in brain science recently. We establish the interlacing theorem for dual unit gain graphs, and show that the spectral radius of a dual unit gain graph is always not greater than the spectral radius of the underlying graph, and these two radii are equal if and only if the dual gain graph is balanced. By using the dual cosine functions, we establish the closed form of eigenvalues of adjacency and Laplacian matrices of dual complex and quaternion unit gain cycles. We then show the coefficient theorem holds for dual unit gain graphs. Similar results hold for the spectral radius of the Laplacian matrix of the dual unit gain graph too.

Computing the $p$-Spectral Radii of Uniform Hypergraphs with Applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $p$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph covers many important concepts, such as Lagrangian and spectral radius of the hypergraph, and is crucial for solving spectral extremal problems of hypergraphs. In this paper, we establish a spherically constrained maximization model and propose a first-order conjugate gradient algorithm to compute the $p$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph (CSRH). By the semialgebraic nature of the adjacency tensor of a uniform hypergraph, CSRH is globally convergent and obtains the global maximizer with a high probability. When computing the spectral radius of the adjacency tensor of a uniform hypergraph, CSRH stands out among existing approaches. Furthermore, CSRH is competent to calculate the $p$-spectral radius of a hypergraph with millions of vertices and to approximate the Lagrangian of a hypergraph. Finally, we show that the CSRH method is capable of ranking real-world data set based on solutions generated by the $p$-spectral radius model.

A doubly nonnegative matrix can be written as a Gramian matrix, and a completely positive matrix can therefore be written as a Gramian matrix of some nonnegative vectors. In this paper, we introduce Gramian tensors and study 2-dimension completely positive tensors and {0,1} CP tensors. Also investigated are the complete positive multi-hypergraph, a generalized form of a cp graph. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a 2-dimensional tensor to be completely positive.

Computing The Analytic Connectivity of A Uniform Hypergraph
The analytic connectivity, proposed as a substitute of the algebraic connectivity in the setting of hypergraphs, is an important quantity in spectral hypergraph theory. The definition of the analytic connectivity for a uniform hypergraph involves a series of optimization problems (POPs) associated with the Laplacian tensor of the hypergraph with nonnegativity constraints and a sphere constraint, which poses difficulties in computation. To reduce the involved computation, properties on the algebraic connectivity are further exploited, and several important structured uniform hypergraphs are shown to attain their analytic connectivities at vertices of the minimum degrees, hence admit a relatively less computation by solving a small number of POPs. To efficiently solve each involved POP, we propose a feasible trust region algorithm ({\tt FTR}) by exploiting their special structures. The global convergence of {\tt FTR} to the second-order necessary conditions points is established, and numerical results for both small and large size examples with comparison to other existing algorithms for POPs are reported to demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed algorithm.

Copositive Tensor Detection and Its Applications in Physics and Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Copositivity of tensors plays an important role in vacuum stability of a general scalar potential, polynomial optimization, tensor complementarity problem and tensor generalized eigenvalue complementarity problem. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for testing copositivity of high order tensors, and then present applications of the algorithm in physics and hypergraphs. For this purpose, we first give several new conditions for copositivity of tensors based on the representative matrix of a simplex. Then a new algorithm is proposed with the help of a proper convex subcone of the copositive tensor cone, which is defined via the copositivity of Z-tensors. Furthermore, by considering a sum-of-squares program problem, we define two new subsets of the copositive tensor cone and discuss their convexity. As an application of the proposed algorithm, we prove that the coclique number of a uniform hypergraph is equivalent with an optimization problem over the completely positive tensor cone, which implies that the proposed algorithm can be applied to compute an upper bound of the coclique number of a uniform hypergraph. Then we study another application of the proposed algorithm on particle physics in testing copositivity of some potential fields. At last, various numerical examples are given to show the performance of the algorithm.

The first few unicyclic and bicyclic hypergraphs with larger spectral radii
Published • View Publication • BIB
A connected $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges is called $r$-cyclic if $n=m(k-1)-r+1$. For $r=1$ or $2$, the hypergraph is simply called unicyclic or bicyclic. In this paper we investigate hypergraphs that attain larger spectral radii among all simple connected $k$-uniform unicyclic and bicyclic hypergraphs. Specifically, by using some edge operations, the formula on power hypergraph eigenvalues, the weighted incidence matrix and a result on linear unicyclic hypergraphs, we determined the first five hypergraphs with larger spectral radius among all unicyclic hypergraphs and the first three over all bicyclic hypergraphs.

Some properties and applications of odd-colorable $r$-hypergraphs
Let $r\geq2$ and $r$ be even. An $r$-hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices is called odd-colorable if there exists a map $\varphi:[n]\rightarrow\lbrack r]$ such that for any edge $\{j_{1},j_{2},\cdots,j_{r}\}$ of $G$, we have $\varphi(j_{1})+\varphi(j_{2})+\cdot\cdot\cdot+\varphi(j_{r})\equiv r/2(\operatorname{mod}r).$ In this paper, we first determine that, if $r=2^{q}(2t+1)$ and $n\ge 2^{q}(2^{q}-1)r$, then the maximum chromatic number in the class of the odd-colorable $r$-hypergraphs on $n$ vertices is $2^q$, which answers a question raised by V. Nikiforov recently in [V. Nikiforov, Hypergraphs and hypermatrices with symmetric spectrum. Prinprint available in arXiv:1605.00709v2, 10 May, 2016]. We also study some applications of the symmetric spectral property of the odd-colorable $r$-graphs given in that same paper by V. Nikiforov. We show that the Laplacian spectrum and the signless Laplacian spectrum of an $r$-hypergraph $G$ are equal if and only if $G$ is odd-colorable, and then study some further applications of these spectral properties.

Some results on the spectral radii of uniform hypergraphs

Let A(G) be the adjacency tensor (hypermatrix) of uniform hypergraph G. The maximum modulus of the eigenvalues of A(G) is called the spectral radius of G. In this paper, the conjecture of Fan et al. in [5] related to compare the spectral radii of some three uniform hypergraphs is solved. Moreover, some eigenvalues properties of a kind of uniform hypergraphs are obtained.

Copositivity Detection of Tensors: Theory and Algorithm
Published • View Publication • BIB
A symmetric tensor is called copositive if it generates a multivariate form taking nonnegative values over the nonnegative orthant. Copositive tensors have found important applications in polynomial optimization and tensor complementarity problems. In this paper, we consider copositivity detection of tensors both from theoretical and computational points of view. After giving several necessary conditions for copositive tensors, we propose several new criteria for copositive tensors based on the representation of the multivariate form in barycentric coordinates with respect to the standard simplex and simplicial partitions. It is verified that, as the partition gets finer and finer, the concerned conditions eventually capture all strictly copositive tensors. Based on the obtained theoretical results with the help of simplicial partitions, we propose a numerical method to judge whether a tensor is copositive or not. The preliminary numerical results confirm our theoretical findings.

Computing Eigenvalues of Large Scale Sparse Tensors Arising from a Hypergraph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The spectral theory of higher-order symmetric tensors is an important tool to reveal some important properties of a hypergraph via its adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor, and signless Laplacian tensor. Owing to the sparsity of these tensors, we propose an efficient approach to calculate products of these tensors and any vectors. Using the state-of-the-art L-BFGS approach, we develop a first-order optimization algorithm for computing H- and Z-eigenvalues of these large scale sparse tensors (CEST). With the aid of the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property, we prove that the sequence of iterates generated by CEST converges to an eigenvector of the tensor. When CEST is started from multiple randomly initial points, the resulting best eigenvalue could touch the extreme eigenvalue with a high probability. Finally, numerical experiments on small hypergraphs show that CEST is efficient and promising. Moreover, CEST is capable of computing eigenvalues of tensors corresponding to a hypergraph with millions of vertices.

Completely Positive Tensors and Multi-Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Completely positive graphs have been employed to associate with completely positive matrices for characterizing the intrinsic zero patterns. As tensors have been widely recognized as a higher-order extension of matrices, the multi-hypergraph, regarded as a generalization of graphs, is then introduced to associate with tensors for the study of complete positivity. To describe the dependence of the corresponding zero pattern for a special type of completely positive tensors--the $\{0,1\}$ completely positive tensors, the completely positive multi-hypergraph is defined. By characterizing properties of the associated multi-hypergraph, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for any $(0,1)$ associated tensor to be $\{0,1\}$ completely positive. Furthermore, a necessary and sufficient condition for a uniform multi-hypergraph to be completely positive multi-hypergraph is proposed as well.

Characterization Tensors of Balanced Incomplete Block Designs
Balanced incomplete block designs (BIBDs) have wide applications in engineering, business and sciences. In this paper, for each (v, k, λ)-BIBD, we construct a strongly symmetric k-th order v-dimensional tensor. We call such a strongly symmetric tensor the characterization tensor of that BIBD, and the absolute value tensor of the characterization tensor the signless characterization tensor of that BIBD. We study some spectral properties of such characterization tensors and signless characterization tensors. In this way, we provide a new tool to study BIBDs.

The proof of a conjecture on largest Laplacian and signless Laplacian H-eigenvalues of uniform hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{A(}G\mathcal{)},\mathcal{L(}G\mathcal{)}$ and $\mathcal{Q(}% G\mathcal{)}$ be the adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor and signless Laplacian tensor of uniform hypergraph $G$, respectively. Denote by $λ(\mathcal{T})$ the largest H-eigenvalue of tensor $\mathcal{T}$. Let $H$ be a uniform hypergraph, and $H^{\prime}$ be obtained from $H$ by inserting a new vertex with degree one in each edge. We prove that $λ(\mathcal{Q(}% H^{\prime}\mathcal{)})\leqλ(\mathcal{Q(}H\mathcal{)}).$ Denote by $G^{k}$ the $k$th power hypergraph of an ordinary graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\geq2$. We will prove that $\{λ(\mathcal{Q(}% G^{k}\mathcal{)})\}$ is a strictly decreasing sequence, which imply Conjectrue 4.1 of Hu, Qi and Shao in \cite{HuQiShao2013}. We also prove that $λ(\mathcal{Q(}G^{k}\mathcal{)})$ converges to $Δ$ when $k$ goes to infinity. The definiton of $k$th power hypergraph $G^{k}$ has been generalized as $G^{k,s}.$ We also prove some eigenvalues properties about $\mathcal{A(}% G^{k,s}\mathcal{)},$ which generalize some known results. Some related results about $\mathcal{L(}G\mathcal{)}$ are also mentioned.
