Tableaux and plane partitions of truncated shapes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a new kind of straight and shifted plane partitions/Young tableaux --- ones whose diagrams are no longer of partition shape, but rather Young diagrams with boxes erased from their upper right ends. We find formulas for the number of standard tableaux in certain cases, namely a shifted staircase without the box in its upper right corner, i.e. truncated by a box, a rectangle truncated by a staircase and a rectangle truncated by a square minus a box. The proofs involve finding the generating function of the corresponding plane partitions using interpretations and formulas for sums of restricted Schur functions and their specializations. The number of standard tableaux is then found as a certain limit of this function.

Asymptotics of the maximal and the typical dimensions of isotypic components of tensor representations of the symmetric group
Published • View Publication • BIB
Vershik and Kerov gave asymptotical bounds for the maximal and the typical dimensions of irreducible representations of symmetric groups $S_n$. It was conjectured by G. Olshanski that the maximal and the typical dimensions of the isotypic components of tensor representations of the symmetric group admit similar asymptotical bounds. The main result of this article is the proof of this conjecture. Consider the natural representation of $S_n$ on $(\mathbb{C}^N)^{\otimes n}$. Its isotypic components are parametrized by Young diagrams with $n$ cells and at most $N$ rows. P. Biane found the limit shape of Young diagrams when $n\rightarrow\infty,\ \sqrt{n}/N\rightarrow c$. By showing that this limit shape is the unique solution to a variational problem, it is proven here, that after scaling, the maximal and the typical dimensions of isotypic components lie between positive constants. A new proof of Biane's limit-shape theorem is obtained.
Random Young diagrams in a Rectangular Box

We exhibit the limit shape of random Young diagrams having a distribution proportional to the exponential of their area, and confined in a rectangular box. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck bridge arises from the fluctuations around the limit shape.

Double-dimer pairings and skew Young diagrams
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 18(1) #P130, 2011 • View Publication • BIB
We study the number of tilings of skew Young diagrams by ribbon tiles shaped like Dyck paths, in which the tiles are "vertically decreasing". We use these quantities to compute pairing probabilities in the double-dimer model: Given a planar bipartite graph $G$ with special vertices, called nodes, on the outer face, the double-dimer model is formed by the superposition of a uniformly random dimer configuration (perfect matching) of $G$ together with a random dimer configuration of the graph formed from $G$ by deleting the nodes. The double-dimer configuration consists of loops, doubled edges, and chains that start and end at the boundary nodes. We are interested in how the chains connect the nodes. An interesting special case is when the graph is $ε(\Z\times\N)$ and the nodes are at evenly spaced locations on the boundary $\R$ as the grid spacing $ε\to 0$.

Zonal polynomials via Stanley's coordinates and free cumulants
Published in Journal of Algebra, Volume 334, Issue 1, 2011, Pages 338-373 • View Publication • BIB
We study zonal characters which are defined as suitably normalized coefficients in the expansion of zonal polynomials in terms of power-sum symmetric functions. We show that the zonal characters, just like the characters of the symmetric groups, admit a nice combinatorial description in terms of Stanley's multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams. We also study the analogue of Kerov polynomials, namely we express the zonal characters as polynomials in free cumulants and we give an explicit combinatorial interpretation of their coefficients. In this way, we prove two recent conjectures of Lassalle for Jack polynomials in the special case of zonal polynomials.

Asymptotics of characters of symmetric groups: structure of Kerov character polynomials
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 119 (6), 2012, pp 1174-1193 • View Publication • BIB
We study asymptotics of characters of the symmetric groups on a fixed conjugacy class. It was proved by Kerov that such a character can be expressed as a polynomial in free cumulants of the Young diagram (certain functionals describing the shape of the Young diagram). We show that for each genus there exists a universal symmetric polynomial which gives the coefficients of the part of Kerov character polynomials with the prescribed homogeneous degree. The existence of such symmetric polynomials was conjectured by Lassalle.

Bethe Ansatz, Inverse Scattering Transform and Tropical Riemann Theta Function in a Periodic Soliton Cellular Automaton for A^{(1)}_n
Published in SIGMA 6 (2010), 013, 52 pages • View Publication • BIB
We study an integrable vertex model with a periodic boundary condition associated with U_q(A_n^{(1)}) at the crystallizing point q=0. It is an (n+1)-state cellular automaton describing the factorized scattering of solitons. The dynamics originates in the commuting family of fusion transfer matrices and generalizes the ultradiscrete Toda/KP flow corresponding to the periodic box-ball system. Combining Bethe ansatz and crystal theory in quantum group, we develop an inverse scattering/spectral formalism and solve the initial value problem based on several conjectures. The action-angle variables are constructed representing the amplitudes and phases of solitons. By the direct and inverse scattering maps, separation of variables into solitons is achieved and nonlinear dynamics is transformed into a straight motion on a tropical analogue of the Jacobi variety. We decompose the level set into connected components under the commuting family of time evolutions and identify each of them with the set of integer points on a torus. The weight multiplicity formula derived from the q=0 Bethe equation acquires an elegant interpretation as the volume of the phase space expressed by the size and multiplicity of these tori. The dynamical period is determined as an explicit arithmetical function of the n-tuple of Young diagrams specifying the level set. The inverse map, i.e., tropical Jacobi inversion is expressed in terms of a tropical Riemann theta function associated with the Bethe ansatz data. As an application, time average of some local variable is calculated.

d-Complete Posets Generalize Young Diagrams for the Jeu de Taquin Property
The jeu de taquin process produced a standard Young tableau from a skew standard Young tableau by shifting its entries to the northwest. We generalize this process to posets: certain partial numberings of any poset are shifted upward. A poset is said to have the jeu de taquin property if the numberings resulting from this process do not depend upon certain choices made during the process. Young diagrams are the posets which underlie standard Young tableaux. These posets have the jeu de taquin property. d-Complete posets are posets which satisfy certain local structual conditions. They are mutual generalizations of Young diagrams, shifted Young diagrams, and rooted trees. We prove that all d-complete posets have the jeu de taquin property. The proof shows that each d-complete poset actually has the stronger "simultaneous" property; this may lead to an algebraic understanding of the main result. A partial converse is stated: "Non-overlapping" simultaneous posets are d-complete.

Canopy of binary trees, Catalan tableaux and the asymmetric exclusion process
Published in FPSAC 2007, Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics, Tianjiin : Chine (2007) • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First we answer to a question asked by Steingrimsson and Williams about certain permutation tableaux: we construct a bijection between binary trees and the so-called Catalan tableaux. These tableaux are certain Ferrers (or Young) diagrams filled with some 0's and 1's, satisfying a certain hook condition, and are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. They form a subclass of the permutation tableaux, enumerated by n!, introduced by Postnikov in his study of totally non negative Grassmannians and networks. Secondly we relate this new Catalan bijection with the totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP), a very rich and well studied 1D gas model in statistical mechanics of nonequilibrium systems. We continue some combinatorial understanding of that model, in the spirit of works by Shapiro, Zeilberger and more recently by Brak, Essam, Rechnitzer, Corteel, Williams, Duchi and Schaeffer. Emphasis is made on the non-classical notion of canopy of a binary tree, analog of the classical up-down sequence of a permutation.

Plancherel averages: Remarks on a paper by Stanley
Published in Electr. J. Combin. 17 (2010), paper #R43, 16 pp. • View Publication • BIB
Let M_n stand for the Plancherel measure on Y_n, the set of Young diagrams with n boxes. A recent result of Stanley (arXiv:0807.0383) says that for certain functions G defined on the set Y of all Young diagrams, the average of G with respect to M_n depends on n polynomially. We propose two other proofs of this result together with a generalization to the Jack deformation of the Plancherel measure.

Random Walks on Strict Partitions
Published in Journal of Mathematical Sciences, vol. 168, no. 3, pp. 437-463, 2010 • View Publication • BIB
We consider a certain sequence of random walks. The state space of the n-th random walk is the set of all strict partitions of n (that is, partitions without equal parts). We prove that, as n goes to infinity, these random walks converge to a continuous-time Markov process. The state space of this process is the infinite-dimensional simplex consisting of all nonincreasing infinite sequences of nonnegative numbers with sum less than or equal to one. The main result about the limit process is the expression of its the pre-generator as a formal second order differential operator in a polynomial algebra. Of separate interest is the generalization of Kerov interlacing coordinates to the case of shifted Young diagrams.

Anisotropic Young diagrams and infinite-dimensional diffusion processes with the Jack parameter
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices 2010 (2010), no.6, 1102-1166 • View Publication • BIB
We construct a family of Markov processes with continuous sample trajectories on an infinite-dimensional space, the Thoma simplex. The family depends on three continuous parameters, one of which, the Jack parameter, is similar to the beta parameter in random matrix theory. The processes arise in a scaling limit transition from certain finite Markov chains, the so called up-down chains on the Young graph with the Jack edge multiplicities. Each of the limit Markov processes is ergodic and its stationary distribution is a symmetrizing measure. The infinitesimal generators of the processes are explicitly computed; viewed as selfadjoint operators in the L^2 spaces over the symmetrizing measures, the generators have purely discrete spectrum which is explicitly described. For the special value 1 of the Jack parameter, the limit Markov processes coincide with those of the recent work by Borodin and the author (Prob. Theory Rel. Fields 144 (2009), 281--318; arXiv:0706.1034). In the limit as the Jack parameter goes to 0, our family of processes degenerates to the one-parameter family of diffusions on the Kingman simplex studied long ago by Ethier and Kurtz in connection with some models of population genetics. The techniques of the paper are essentially algebraic. The main computations are performed in the algebra of shifted symmetric functions with the Jack parameter and rely on the concept of anisotropic Young diagrams due to Kerov.

Codimension growth of a variety of Novikov algebras
An algebra with identities $a\circ(b\circ c-c\circ b)=(a\circ b)\circ c-(a\circ c)\circ b$ and $a\circ(b\circ c)=b\circ(a\circ c)$ is called Novikov. We construct free Novikov base in terms of Young diagrams. We show that codimensions exponent for a variety of Novikov algebras exists and is equal 4.

Ergodicity of multiplicative statistics

For a subfamily of multiplicative measures on integer partitions we give conditions for properly rescaled associated Young diagrams to converge in probability to a certain deterministic curve named the limit shape of partitions. We provide explicit formulas for the scaling function and the limit shape covering some known and some new examples.

On the Limiting Shape of Young Tableaux Associated With Inhomogeneous Random Words
The limiting shape of the random Young diagrams associated with an inhomogeneous random word is identified as a multidimensional Brownian functional. This functional is identical in law to the spectrum of a random matrix. The Poissonized word problem is also briefy studied, and the asymptotic behavior of the shape analyzed.

Giambelli, Pieri, and tableau formulas via raising operators
Published in J. reine angew. Math. 652 (2011), 207-244 • View Publication • BIB
We give a direct proof of the equivalence between the Giambelli and Pieri type formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions using Young's raising operators, parallel to joint work with Buch and Kresch for the Schubert classes on isotropic Grassmannians. We prove several closely related mirror identities enjoyed by the Giambelli polynomials, which lead to new recursions for Schubert classes. The raising operator approach is applied to obtain tableau formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions, theta polynomials, and related Stanley symmetric functions. Finally, we introduce the notion of a skew element w of the hyperoctahedral group and identify the set of reduced words for w with the set of standard k-tableaux on a skew Young diagram.

An algorithmic Littlewood-Richardson rule

We introduce a Littlewood-Richardson rule based on an algorithmic deformation of skew Young diagrams and present a bijection with the classical rule. The result is a direct combinatorial interpretation and proof of the geometric rule presented by Coskun. We also present a corollary regarding the Specht modules of the intermediate diagrams.

Combinatorial Formulas for Macdonald and Hall-Littlewood Polynomials of Types A and C. Extended Abstract
Published • View Publication • BIB
A breakthrough in the theory of (type A) Macdonald polynomials is due to Haglund, Haiman and Loehr, who exhibited a combinatorial formula for these polynomials in terms of fillings of Young diagrams. Recently, Ram and Yip gave a formula for the Macdonald polynomials of arbitrary type in terms of the corresponding affine Weyl group. In this paper, we show that a Haglund-Haiman-Loehr type formula follows naturally from the more general Ram-Yip formula, via compression. Then we extend this approach to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of type C, which are specializations of the corresponding Macdonald polynomials at q=0. We note that no analog of the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula exists beyond type A, so our work is a first step towards finding such a formula.

Polynomiality of some hook-length statistics
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a conjecture of Okada giving an exact formula for a certain statistic for hook-lengths of partitions: \frac{1}{n!} \sum_{λ\vdash n} f_λ^2 \sum_{u \in λ} \prod_{i=1}^{r}(h_u^2 - i^2) = \frac{1}{2(r+1)^2} \binom{2r}{r}\binom{2r+2}{r+1} \prod_{j=0}^{r} (n-j), where $f_λ$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ and $h_u$ is the hook length of the square $u$ of the Young diagram of $λ$. We also obtain other similar formulas.

The complexity of certain Specht modules for the symmetric group
Published • View Publication • BIB
During the 2004-2005 academic year the VIGRE algebra research group at the University of Georgia computed the complexities of certain Specht modules S^λfor the symmetric group, using the computer algebra program Magma. The complexity of an indecomposable module does not exceed the p-rank of the defect group of its block. The Georgia group conjectured that, generically, the complexity of a Specht module attains this maximal value; that it is smaller precisely when the Young diagram of $λ$ is built out of $p \times p$ blocks. We prove one direction of this conjecture by showing these Specht modules do indeed have less than maximal complexity. It turns out that this class of partitions, which has not previously appeared in the literature, arises naturally as the solution to a question about the $p$-weight of partitions and branching.
