One-Point Suspensions and Wreath Products of Polytopes and Spheres
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that the suspension of a simplicial complex can be realized with only one additional point. Suitable iterations of this construction generate highly symmetric simplicial complexes with various interesting combinatorial and topological properties. In particular, infinitely many non-PL spheres as well as contractible simplicial complexes with a vertex-transitive group of automorphisms can be obtained in this way.

Lexicographic shellability for balanced complexes
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics, 17 (2003), no. 1, 27-52 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a notion of lexicographic shellability for pure, balanced boolean cell complexes, modelled after the $CL$-shellability criterion of Björner and Wachs for posets and its generalization by Kozlov called $CC$-shellability. We give a lexicographic shelling for the quotient of the order complex of a Boolean algebra of rank $2n$ by the action of the wreath product $S_2\wr S_n$ of symmetric groups, and we provide a partitioning for the quotient complex $Δ(Π_n)/S_n $. Stanley asked for a description of the symmetric group representation $β_S $ on the homology of the rank-selected partition lattice $Π_n^S $ in [St2], and in particular he asked when the multiplicity $b_S(n)$ of the trivial representation in $β_S$ is 0. One consequence of the partitioning for $\dps $ is a (fairly complicated) combinatorial interpretation for $b_S(n) $; another is a simple proof of Hanlon's result that $b_{1,..., i}(n)=0$. Using a result of Garsia and Stanton, we deduce from our shelling for $Δ(B_{2n})/S_2 \wr S_n$ that the ring of invariants $k[x_1,..., x_{2n}]^{S_2\wr S_n}$ is Cohen-Macaulay over any field $k$.

Representations of wreath products on cohomology of De Concini-Procesi compactifications
Published in Intern. Math. Res. Notices 2004:20 (2004), 983-1021 • Search Publication
The wreath product W(r,n) of the cyclic group of order r and the symmetric group S_n acts on the corresponding projective hyperplane complement, and on its wonderful compactification as defined by De Concini and Procesi. We give a formula for the characters of the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of this compactification, extending the result of Ginzburg and Kapranov in the r=1 case. As a corollary, we get a formula for the Betti numbers which generalizes the result of Yuzvinsky in the r=2 case. Our method involves applying to the nested-set stratification a generalization of Joyal's theory of tensor species, which includes a link between polynomial functors and plethysm for general r. We also give a new proof of Lehrer's formula for the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of the hyperplane complement.

Equations in finite semigroups: Explicit enumeration and asymptotics of solution numbers
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 105 (2004), 291-334. • View Publication • BIB
We study the number of solutions of the general semigroup equation in one variable, $X^\al=X^\be$, as well as of the system of equations $X^2=X, Y^2=Y, XY=YX$ in $H\wr T_n$, the wreath product of an arbitrary finite group $H$ with the full transformation semigroup $T_n$ on $n$ letters. For these solution numbers, we provide explicit exact formulae, as well as asymptotic estimates. Our results concerning the first mentioned problem generalize earlier results by Harris and Schoenfeld (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 3 (1967), 122-135) on the number of idempotents in $T_n$, and a partial result of Dress and the second author (Adv. in Math. 129 (1997), 188-221). Among the asymptotic tools employed are Hayman's method for the estimation of coefficients of analytic functions and the Poisson summation formula.
Transitive simple subgroups of wreath products in product action
Published • View Publication • BIB
A transitive simple subgroup of a finite symmetric group is very rarely contained in a full wreath product in product action. All such simple permutation groups are determined in this paper. This remarkable conclusion is reached after a definition and detailed examination of `Cartesian decompositions' of the permuted set, relating them to certain `Cartesian systemsof subgroups'. These concepts, and the bijective connections between them, are explored in greater generality, with specific future applications in mind.

Transitive permutation groups of prime-squared degree
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 16 (2002) 43-69 • View Publication • BIB
We explicitly determine all of the transitive groups of degree p-squared, p a prime, whose Sylow p-subgroup is not the wreath product of two cyclic groups of order p. Furthermore, we provide a general description of the transitive groups of degree p-squared whose Sylow p-subgroup is such a wreath product, and explicitly determine most of them. As applications, we solve the Cayley Isomorphism problem for Cayley objects of an abelian group of order p-squared, explicitly determine the full automorphism group of Cayley graphs of abelian groups of order p-squared, and find all nonnormal Cayley graphs of order p-squared.

The Flag Major Index and Group Actions on Polynomial Rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
A new extension of the major index, defined in terms of Coxeter elements, is introduced. For the classical Weyl groups of type $B$, it is equidistributed with length. For more general wreath products it appears in an explicit formula for the Hilbert series of the (diagonal action) invariant algebra.
