Deterministic polynomial-time approximation algorithms for partition functions and graph polynomials
Published in SIAM J. Comput., 46(6), 1893-1919 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we show a new way of constructing deterministic polynomial-time approximation algorithms for computing complex-valued evaluations of a large class of graph polynomials on bounded degree graphs. In particular, our approach works for the Tutte polynomial and independence polynomial, as well as partition functions of complex-valued spin and edge-coloring models. More specifically, we define a large class of graph polynomials $\mathcal C$ and show that if $p\in \cal C$ and there is a disk $D$ centered at zero in the complex plane such that $p(G)$ does not vanish on $D$ for all bounded degree graphs $G$, then for each $z$ in the interior of $D$ there exists a deterministic polynomial-time approximation algorithm for evaluating $p(G)$ at $z$. This gives an explicit connection between absence of zeros of graph polynomials and the existence of efficient approximation algorithms, allowing us to show new relationships between well-known conjectures. Our work builds on a recent line of work initiated by. Barvinok, which provides a new algorithmic approach besides the existing Markov chain Monte Carlo method and the correlation decay method for these types of problems.

Singularities in Negami's splitting formula for the Tutte polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
The n-sum graph Negami's splitting formula for the Tutte polynomial is not valid in the region $(x-1)(y-1)=q$ for $q=1,2,\ldots n-1$ with the additional region $y=1$ if $n>3$. This region corresponds to (up to prefactors and change of variables) the Ising model, the $q$-state Potts model, the number of spanning forest generator and particularizations of these. We show splitting formulas for these specializations.

Partial flag incidence algebras
The $n^{th}$ partial flag incidence algebra of a poset $P$ is the set of functions from $P^n$ to some ring which are zero on non-partial flag vectors. These partial flag incidence algebras for $n>2$ are not commutative, not unitary, and not associative. However, partial flag incidence algebras contain generalized zeta, delta, and Möbius functions which are finer and more delicate invariants than their classical analogues. We also study some generalized characteristic polynomials of posets which are not evaluations of Tutte polynomials and compute them for Boolean lattices. Motivation for this work came from studying the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials where partial flag Whitney numbers play a central role.

The Tutte expansion revisited
The Tutte polynomial of a connected graph was originally defined by Tutte as a sum over all spanning trees of monomials depending on a fixed linear order on the set of edges. Tuttle proved that while these monomials do depend on the linear order, the sum does not. The present paper is a result of a reflection upon this classical theorem of Tutte. It is devoted to an elementary and detailed proof of this theorem in its natural generality, i.e. not for graphs, but for matroids. In contrast with usual methods, the emphasis is on the properties of maps (as opposed to elements) naturally associated to a matroid (or a graph) and an order. In order to fully explain the four-fold symmetry of the proof, we introduce notion of linking between two matroids on the same set. While every matroid is, in fact, linked only to itself and to its dual matroid, the notion of a linking identifies the essential features of the theory and allows to replace the usual four similar arguments by a single one. This is done in Theorem 9.1, which is the focal point of the present paper. With the exception of Introduction, the present paper is self-contained modulo basic concepts related to sets and maps. In particular, no knowledge of the matroid theory or of the graph theory is assumed.

Generalized star configurations and the Tutte polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
From the generating matrix of a linear code one can construct a sequence of generalized star configurations which are strongly connected to the generalized Hamming weights and the underlying matroid of the code. When the code is MDS, the matrix is generic and we obtain the usual star configurations. In our main result, we show that the degree of a generalized star configuration as a projective scheme is determined by the Tutte polynomial of the code. In the process, we obtain preliminary results on the primary decomposition of the defining ideals of these schemes. Additionally, we conjecture that these ideals have linear minimal free resolutions and prove partial results in this direction.

A lattice point counting generalisation of the Tutte polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Tutte polynomial for matroids is not directly applicable to polymatroids. For instance, deletion-contraction properties do not hold. We construct a polynomial for polymatroids which behaves similarly to the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, and in fact contains the same information as the Tutte polynomial when we restrict to matroids. This polynomial is constructed using lattice point counts in the Minkowski sum of the base polytope of a polymatroid and scaled copies of the standard simplex. We also show that, in the matroid case, our polynomial has coefficients of alternating sign, with a combinatorial interpretation closely tied to the Dawson partition.

The Jones polynomial and functions of positive type on the oriented Jones-Thompson groups $\vec{F}$ and $\vec{T}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The pioneering work of Jones and Kauffman unveiled a fruitful relationship between statistical mechanics and knot theory. Recently, Jones introduced two subgroups $\vec{F}$ and $\vec{T}$ of the Thompson groups $F$ and $T$, respectively, together with a procedure that associates an oriented link diagram to any element of these subgroups. Moreover, several specializations of some well-known polynomial link invariants can be seen as functions of positive type on the Thompson groups or the Jones-Thompson subgroups. One important example is provided by suitable evaluations of the Jones polynomial, which are thus associated with certain unitary representations of the groups $\vec{F}$ and $\vec{T}$. Within this framework, we discuss an alternative approach that relies on some partition function interpretation of the Jones polynomial, and also exhibit more examples associated with other link invariants, notably the two-variable Kauffman polynomial and the HOMFLY polynomial. In the unoriented case, extending our previous results, we also show by similar methods that certain evaluations of the Tutte polynomial and of the Kauffman bracket, suitably renormalized, yield functions of positive type on $T$.

Co-adjoint polynomial
In this note we study a certain graph polynomial arising from a special recursion. This recursion is a member of a family of four recursions where the other three recursions belong to the chromatic polynomial, the modified matching polynomial, and the adjoint polynomial, respectively. The four polynomials share many common properties, for instance all of them are of exponential type, i. e., they satisfy the identity $$\sum_{S\subseteq V(G)}f(G[S],x)f(G[V\setminus S],y)=f(G,x+y)$$ for every graph $G$. It turns out that the new graph polynomial is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial.

The intersection ring of matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a particular graded ring structure on the set of all loopfree matroids on a fixed labeled ground set, which occurs naturally in tropical geometry. The product is given by matroid intersection and the additive structure is defined by assigning to each matroid the indicator vector of its chains of flats. We show that this ring is generated in corank one, more precisely that any matroid can be written as a linear combination of products of corank one matroids. Moreover, we prove that a basis for the graded part of rank r matroids is given by the set of nested matroids and that the total number of these is a Eulerian number. Derksen's G-invariant then defines a Z-linear map on this ring, which implies for example that the Tutte polynomial is linear on it as well. Finally we show that the ring is the cohomology ring of the toric variety of the permutohedron and thus fulfills Poincaré duality.

Tutte polynomials and random-cluster models in Bernoulli cell complexes
This paper studies Bernoulli cell complexes from the perspective of persistent homology, Tutte polynomials, and random-cluster models. Following the previous work [9], we first show the asymptotic order of the expected lifetime sum of the persistent homology for the Bernoulli cell complex process on the $\ell$-cubical lattice. Then, an explicit formula of the expected lifetime sum using the Tutte polynomial is derived. Furthermore, we study a higher dimensional generalization of the random-cluster model derived from the Edwards-Sokal type coupling, and show some basic results such as the positive association and the relation to the Tutte polynomial.

Root polytopes, Tutte polynomials, and a duality theorem for bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a connected bipartite graph with color classes E and V and root polytope Q. Regarding the hypergraph (V,E) induced by G, we prove that its interior polynomial is equivalent to the Ehrhart polynomial of Q, which in turn is equivalent to the h-vector of any triangulation of Q. It follows that the interior polynomials of (V,E) and its transpose (E,V) agree. When G is a complete bipartite graph, our result recovers a well known hypergeometric identity due to Saalschütz. It also implies that certain extremal coefficients in the Homfly polynomial of a special alternating link can be read off of an associated Floer homology group.

Colorings and flows on CW complexes, Tutte quasi-polynomials and arithmetic matroids
In this note we provide a higher-dimensional analogue of Tutte's celebrated theorem on colorings and flows of graphs, by showing that the theory of arithmetic Tutte polynomials and quasi-polynomials encompasses invariants defined for CW complexes by Beck-Breuer-Godkin-Martin and Duval-Klivans-Martin. Furthermore, we answer a question by Bajo-Burdick-Chmutov, concerning the modified Tutte-Krushkal-Renhardy polynomials defined by these authors: to this end, we prove that the product of two arithmetic multiplicity functions on a matroid is again an arithmetic multiplicity function.

A convolution formula for Tutte polynomials of arithmetic matroids and other combinatorial structures
In this note we generalize the convolution formula for the Tutte polynomial of Kook-Reiner-Stanton and Etienne-Las Vergnas to a more general setting that includes both arithmetic matroids and delta-matroids. As corollaries, we obtain new proofs of two positivity results for pseudo-arithmetic matroids and a combinatorial interpretation of the arithmetic Tutte polynomial at infinitely many points in terms of arithmetic flows and colorings. We also exhibit connections with a decomposition of Dahmen-Micchelli spaces and lattice point counting in zonotopes.

Delta-matroids and Vassiliev invariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
Vassiliev (finite type) invariants of knots can be described in terms of weight systems. These are functions on chord diagrams satisfying so-called 4-term relations. In the study of the sl2 weight system, it was shown that its value on a chord diagram depends on the intersection graph of the diagram rather than on the diagram itself. Moreover, it was shown that the value of this weight system on an intersection graph depends on the cy- cle matroid of the graph rather than on the graph itself. This result arose the question whether there is a natural way to introduce a 4-term relation on the space spanned by matroids, similar to the one for graphs. It happened however that the answer is negative: there are graphs having isomorphic cycle matroids such that applying the "second Vassiliev move" to a pair of corresponding vertices a;b of the graphs we obtain two graphs with nonisomorphic matroids. The goal of the present paper is to show that the situation is different for binary delta-matroids: one can define both the first and the second Vassiliev moves for binary delta-matroids and introduce a 4-term relation for them in such a way that the mapping taking a chord diagram to its delta-matroid respects the corresponding 4-term relations. Moreover, this mapping admits a natural extension to chord diagrams on several circles, which correspond to singular links. Delta-matroids were introduced by A. Bouchet for the purpose of studying embedded graphs, whence their relationship with (multiloop) chord diagrams is by no means unexpected. Some evidence for the existence of such a relationship can be found, for example, the Tutte polynomial for embedded graphs has been introduced. It was shown that this polynomial depends on the delta-matroid of the embedded graph rather than the graph itself and satises the Vassilev 4-term relation.

On an ordering-dependent generalization of Tutte polynomial
Published in J. Stat. Phys. 168, 5 pp. 1105-1124 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
A generalization of Tutte polynomial involved in the evaluation of the moments of the integrated geometric Brownian in the Ito formalism is discussed. The new combinatorial invariant depends on the order in which the sequence of contraction-deletions have been performed on the graph. Thus, this work provides a motivation for studying an order-dependent Tutte polynomial in the context of stochastic differential equations. We show that in the limit of the control parameters encoding the ordering going to zero, the multivariate Tutte-Fortuin-Kasteleyn polynomial is recovered.

Fourientation activities and the Tutte polynomial
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 67, 40-60 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
A fourientation of a graph $G$ is a choice for each edge of the graph whether to orient that edge in either direction, leave it unoriented, or biorient it. We may naturally view fourientations as a mixture of subgraphs and graph orientations where unoriented and bioriented edges play the role of absent and present subgraph edges, respectively. Building on work of Backman and Hopkins (2015), we show that given a linear order and a reference orientation of the edge set, one can define activities for fourientations of $G$ which allow for a new 12 variable expansion of the Tutte polynomial $T_G$. Our formula specializes to both the Las Vergnas (1984) orientation activites expansion of the Tutte polynomial and the generalized activities expansion of Gordon and Traldi (1990).

Matroid invariants and counting graph homomorphisms
Published • View Publication • BIB
The number of homomorphisms from a finite graph $F$ to the complete graph $K_n$ is the evaluation of the chromatic polynomial of $F$ at $n$. Suitably scaled, this is the Tutte polynomial evaluation $T(F;1-n,0)$ and an invariant of the cycle matroid of $F$. De la Harpe and Jaeger \cite{dlHJ95} asked more generally when is it the case that a graph parameter obtained from counting homomorphisms from $F$ to a fixed graph $G$ depends only on the cycle matroid of $F$. They showed that this is true when $G$ has a generously transitive automorphism group (examples include Cayley graphs on an abelian group, and Kneser graphs). Using tools from multilinear algebra, we prove the converse statement, thus characterizing finite graphs $G$ for which counting homomorphisms to $G$ yields a matroid invariant. We also extend this result to finite weighted graphs $G$ (where to count homomorphisms from $F$ to $G$ includes such problems as counting nowhere-zero flows of $F$ and evaluating the partition function of an interaction model on $F$).

Graph polynomials and link invariants as positive type functions on Thompson's group F
Published in J. Knot Theory Ramif. Vol. 28, No. 02, 1950006 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
In a recent paper Jones introduced a correspondence between elements of the Thompson group $F$ and certain graphs/links. It follows from his work that several polynomial invariants of links, such as the Kauffman bracket, can be reinterpreted as coefficients of certain unitary representations of $F$. We give a somewhat different and elementary proof of this fact for the Kauffman bracket evaluated at certain roots of unity by means of a statistical mechanics model interpretation. Moreover, by similar methods we show that, for some particular specializations of the variables, other familiar link invariants and graph polynomials, namely the number of $N$-colourings and the Tutte polynomial, can be viewed as positive definite functions on $F$.
A Tutte polynomial inequality for lattice path matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $M$ be a matroid without loops or coloops and let $T(M;x,y)$ be its Tutte polynomial. In 1999 Merino and Welsh conjectured that $$\max(T(M;2,0), T(M;0,2))\geq T(M;1,1)$$ holds for graphic matroids. Ten years later, Conde and Merino proposed a multiplicative version of the conjecture which implies the original one. In this paper we prove the multiplicative conjecture for the family of lattice path matroids (generalizing earlier results on uniform and Catalan matroids). In order to do this, we introduce and study particular lattice path matroids, called snakes, used as building bricks to indeed establish a strengthening of the multiplicative conjecture as well as a complete characterization of the cases in which equality holds.
