We find a relation between mixed volumes of several polytopes and the convex hull of their union, deducing it from the following fact: the mixed volume of a collection of polytopes only depends on the product of their support functions (rather than on the individual support functions). For integer polytopes, this dependence is essentially a certain specialization of the isomorphism between two well-known combinatorial models for the cohomology of toric varieties, however, this construction has not been extended to arbitrary polytopes so far (partially due to the lack of combinatorial tools capable of substituting for toric geometry, when vertices are not rational). We provide such an extension, which leads to an explicit formula for the mixed volume in terms of the product of support functions, and may also be interesting because of the combinatorial tools (tropical varieties with polynomial weights and their corner loci) that appear in our construction. As an example of another possible application of these new objects, we notice that every tropical subvariety in a tropical manifold M can be locally represented as the intersection of M with another tropical variety (possibly with negative weights), and conjecture certain generalizations of this fact to singular M. The above fact about subvarieties of a tropical manifold may be of independent interest, because it implies that the intersection theory on a tropical manifold, which was recently constructed by Allerman, Francois, Rau and Shaw, is locally induced from the ambient vector space.

We prove that, for fixed n there exist only finitely many embeddings of Q-factorial toric varieties X into P^n that are induced by a complete linear system. The proof is based on a combinatorial result that for fixed nonnegative integers d and n, there are only finitely many smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points. We also enumerate all smooth 3-polytopes with at most 12 lattice points. In fact, it is sufficient to bound the singularities and the number of lattice points on edges to prove finiteness.
Non-coherent Components of the Toric Hilbert Scheme
We want to understand the geometry of all irreducible components of the toric Hilbert scheme. Until now it is known that the coherent component is (up to normalisation) the toric variety associated to the state polytope of the toric ideal. For the non-coherent components it was only known that there exists such a polytope describing the normalisation. Using the local equations and various facts about toric Hilbert schemes, we will derive an explicit construction of the polytope corresponding to the normalisation of the underlying reduced structure of a given non-coherent component of the toric Hilbert scheme.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of "extension" of a toric variety and study its fundamental properties. This gives rise to infinitely many toric varieties with a special property, such as being set theoretic complete intersection or arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein) and having a Cohen-Macaulay tangent cone or a local ring with non-decreasing Hilbert function, from just one single example with the same property, verifying Rossi's conjecture for larger classes and extending some results appeared in literature.

We prove a theorem relating torus-equivariant coherent sheaves on toric varieties to polyhedrally-constructible sheaves on a vector space. At the level of K-theory, the theorem recovers Morelli's description of the K-theory of a smooth projective toric variety. Specifically, let $X$ be a proper toric variety of dimension $n$ and let $M_\bR = \mathrm{Lie}(T_\bR^\vee)\cong \bR^n$ be the Lie algebra of the compact dual (real) torus $T_\bR^\vee\cong U(1)^n$. Then there is a corresponding conical Lagrangian $Λ\subset T^*M_\bR$ and an equivalence of triangulated dg categories $\Perf_T(X) \cong \Sh_{cc}(M_\bR;Λ),$ where $\Perf_T(X)$ is the triangulated dg category of perfect complexes of torus-equivariant coherent sheaves on $X$ and $\Sh_{cc}(M_\bR;Λ)$ is the triangulated dg category of complex of sheaves on $M_\bR$ with compactly supported, constructible cohomology whose singular support lies in $Λ$. This equivalence is monoidal---it intertwines the tensor product of coherent sheaves on $X$ with the convolution product of constructible sheaves on $M_\bR$.

The symplectic group branching algebra, B, is a graded algebra whose components encode the multiplicities of irreducible representations of Sp(2n-2,C) in each irreducible representation of Sp(2n,C). By describing on B an ASL structure, we construct an explicit standard monomial basis of B consisting of Sp(2n-2,C) highest weight vectors. Moreover, B is known to carry a canonical action of the n-fold product SL(2) \times ... \times SL(2), and we show that the standard monomial basis is the unique (up to scalar) weight basis associated to this representation. Finally, using the theory of Hibi algebras we describe a deformation of Spec(B) into an explicit toric variety.

Motivated by representation theory and geometry, we introduce and develop an equivariant generalization of Ehrhart theory, the study of lattice points in dilations of lattice polytopes. We prove representation-theoretic analogues of numerous classical results, and give applications to the Ehrhart theory of rational polytopes and centrally symmetric polytopes. We also recover a character formula of Procesi, Dolgachev, Lunts and Stembridge for the action of a Weyl group on the cohomology of a toric variety associated to a root system.
Tropical cycles and Chow polytopes

The Chow polytope of an algebraic cycle in a torus depends only on its tropicalisation. Generalising this, we associate a Chow polytope to any abstract tropical variety in a tropicalised toric variety. Several significant polyhedra associated to tropical varieties are special cases of our Chow polytope. The Chow polytope of a tropical variety $X$ is given by a simple combinatorial construction: its normal subdivision is the Minkowski sum of $X$ and a reflected skeleton of the fan of the ambient toric variety.

Let Δbe the Okounkov body of a divisor D on a projective variety X. We describe a geometric criterion for Δto be a lattice polytope, and show that in this situation X admits a flat degeneration to the corresponding toric variety. This degeneration is functorial in an appropriate sense.
Projectivized rank two toric vector bundles are Mori dream spaces
We prove that the Cox ring of the projectivization P(E) of a rank two toric vector bundle E, over a toric variety X, is a finitely generated k-algebra. As a consequence, P(E) is a Mori dream space if the toric variety X is projective and simplicial.

The Oda's Strong Factorization Conjecture states that a proper birational map between smooth toric varieties can be decomposed as a sequence of smooth toric blowups followed by a sequence of smooth toric blowdowns. This article describes an algorithm that conjecturally constructs such a decomposition. Several reductions and simplifications of the algorithm are presented and some special cases of the conjecture are proved.

We extend our previous work arXiv:1007.0053 on coherent-constructible correspondence for toric varieties to include toric Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks. Following Borisov-Chen-Smith, a toric DM stack $\cX_\bSi$ is described by a "stacky fan" $\bSi=(N,\Si,β)$, where $N$ is a finitely generated abelian group and $\Si$ is a simplicial fan in $N_\bR=N\otimes_{\bZ}\bR$. From $\bSi$ we define a conical Lagrangian $Λ_\bSi$ inside the cotangent $T^*M_\bR$ of the dual vector space $M_\bR$ of $N_\bR$, such that torus-equivariant, coherent sheaves on $\cX_\bSi$ are equivalent to constructible sheaves on $M_\bR$ with singular support in $\LbS$.
Okounkov bodies on projectivizations of rank two toric vector bundles
The global Okounkov body of a projective variety is a closed convex cone that encodes asymptotic information about every big line bundle on the variety. In the case of a rank two toric vector bundle E on a smooth projective toric variety, we use its Klyachko filtrations to give an explicit description of the global Okounkov body of P(E). In particular, we show that this is a rational polyhedral cone and that P(E) is a Mori dream space.

It is a long-standing question whether an arbitrary variety is desingularized by finitely many normalized Nash blow-ups. We consider this question in the case of a toric variety. We interpret the normalized Nash blow-up in polyhedral terms, show how continued fractions can be used to give an affirmative answer for a toric surface, and report on a computer investigation in which over a thousand 3- and 4-dimensional toric varieties were successfully resolved.

We introduce a moduli functor for varieties whose tropicalization realizes a given weighted fan and show that this functor is an algebraic space in general, and is represented by a scheme of finite type when the associated toric variety is quasiprojective. We study the geometry of these tropical realization spaces for the matroid fans studied by Ardila and Klivans, and show that the tropical realization space of a matroid fan is a torus torsor over the realization space of the matroid. As a consequence, we deduce that these tropical realization spaces satisfy Murphy's Law.

We use Batyrev-Borisov's formula for the generating function of stringy Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau varieties realized as complete intersections in toric varieties in order to get closed form expressions for Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau threefolds in five-dimensional ambient spaces. These expressions involve counts of lattice points on faces of associated Cayley polytopes. Using the same techniques, similar expressions may be obtained for higher dimensional varieties realized as complete intersections of two hypersurfaces.
Projective normality of finite group quotients and EGZ theorem
In this note, we prove that for any finite dimensional vector space $V$ over $\mathbb {C}$, and for a finite cyclic group $G$, the projective variety $\mathbb P(V)/G$ is projectively normal with respect to the descent of $\mathcal O(1)^{\otimes |G|}$ by a method using toric variety, and deduce the EGZ theorem as a consequence.
Floor decompositions of tropical curves : the planar case
In a previous paper, we announced a formula to compute Gromov-Witten and Welschinger invariants of some toric varieties, in terms of combinatorial objects called floor diagrams. We give here detailed proofs in the tropical geometry framework, in the case when the ambient variety is a complex surface, and give some examples of computations using floor diagrams. The focusing on dimension 2 is motivated by the special combinatoric of floor diagrams compared to arbitrary dimension.
We treat a general toric surface case in this dimension: the curve is given by an arbitrary lattice polygon and include computation of Welschinger invariants with pairs of conjugate points. See also \cite{FM} for combinatorial treatment of floor diagrams in the projective case.
Problems on Minkowski sums of convex lattice polytopes
This paper was submitted to the Oberwolfach Conference "Combinatorial Convexity and Algebraic Geometry", October 1997.
Let $M={\mathbb Z}^r$. For convex lattice polytopes $P,P'$ in ${\mathbb R}^r$, when is $(M \cap P)+ (M \cap P') = M \cap (P + P')$?
Without any additional condition, the equality obviously does not hold.
When the pair $(M,P)$ corresponds to a complex projective toric variety $X$ and an ample divisor $D$ on $X$, it is reasonable to assume that $P'$ corresponds to an ample (or, more generally, a nef) divisor $D'$ on the same $X$. Then the question correspons to the surjectivity of the canonical map \[ H^0(X,{\mathcal O}_X(D))\otimes H^0(X,{\mathcal O}_X(D'))\to H^0(X,{\mathcal O}_X(D+D')).\]
When $X$ is nonsingular, the map is hoped to be surjective, but this remains to be an open question after more than ten years.
The paper explores various variations on the question in terms of toric geometry.
