Orthogonal polynomials and Smith normal form

Smith normal form evaluations found by Bessenrodt and Stanley for some Hankel matrices of q-Catalan numbers are proven in two ways. One argument generalizes the Bessenrodt-Stanley results for the Smith normal form of a certain multivariate matrix that refines one studied by Berlekamp, Carlitz, Roselle, and Scoville. The second argument, which uses orthogonal polynomials, generalizes to a number of other Hankel matrices, Toeplitz matrices, and Gram matrices. It gives new results for q-Catalan numbers, q-Motzkin numbers, q-Schröder numbers, q-Stirling numbers, q-matching numbers, q-factorials, q-double factorials, as well as generating functions for permutations with eight statistics.

We prove that, for fixed n there exist only finitely many embeddings of Q-factorial toric varieties X into P^n that are induced by a complete linear system. The proof is based on a combinatorial result that for fixed nonnegative integers d and n, there are only finitely many smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points. We also enumerate all smooth 3-polytopes with at most 12 lattice points. In fact, it is sufficient to bound the singularities and the number of lattice points on edges to prove finiteness.

Q-factorial Gorenstein toric Fano varieties X of dimension d with Picard number rho(X) correspond to simplicial reflexive d-polytopes with rho(X)+d vertices. Casagrande showed that any simplicial reflexive d-polytope has at most 3d vertices, if d is even, respectively, 3d-1, if d is odd. Moreover, it is known that equality for d even implies uniqueness up to unimodular equivalence. In this paper we completely classify all simplicial reflexive d-polytopes having 3d-1 vertices, corresponding to d-dimensional Q-factorial Gorenstein toric Fano varieties with Picard number 2d-1. For d even, there exist three such varieties, with two being singular, while for d odd (d > 1) there exist precisely two, both being nonsingular toric fiber bundles over the projective line. This generalizes recent work of the second author.

A fake weighted projective space X is a Q-factorial toric variety with Picard number one. As with weighted projective space, X comes equipped with a set of weights (λ_0,...,λ_n). We see how the singularities of P(λ_0,...,λ_n) influence the singularities of X, and how the weights bound the number of possible fake weighted projective spaces for a fixed dimension. Finally, we present an upper bound on the ratios λ_j/\sumλ_i if we wish X to have only terminal (or canonical) singularities.

The main result of this paper is a structural theorem for projective Q-factorial toric varieties X in P^N, covered by lines. We prove that there exists a toric fibration f: X -> Z, locally trivial in the Zariski topology, with fiber a product of projective joins. All lines in X intersecting the open subset isomorphic to the torus, are contained in some fiber of f. This characterization has a geometrical application to dual defective toric varieties, and a combinatorial application to discriminants of lattice subsets. We prove that X has positive dual defect if and only if it has an elementary extremal contraction of fiber type, whose general fiber is a projective join with dual defect bigger than its codimension in X. Turning to combinatorics, we characterize lattice subsets A with discriminant D_A equal to one, under suitable assumptions on the polytope Conv(A).

We prove sharp upper bounds on the volume and the number of lattice points on edges of higher-dimensional reflexive simplices. These convex-geometric results are derived from new number-theoretic bounds on the denominators of unit fractions summing up to one. The main algebro-geometric application is a sharp upper bound on the anticanonical degree of higher-dimensional Q-factorial Gorenstein toric Fano varieties with Picard number one, where we completely characterize the case of equality.

Let X be a complex, Gorenstein, Q-factorial, toric Fano variety. We prove two conjectures on the maximal Picard number of X in terms of its dimension and its pseudo-index, and characterize the boundary cases. Equivalently, we determine the maximal number of vertices of a simplicial reflexive polytope.
