We refine a technique used in a paper by Schur on real-rooted polynomials. This amounts to an extension of a theorem of Wagner on Hadamard products of Toeplitz matrices. We also apply our results to polynomials for which the Neggers-Stanley Conjecture is known to hold. More precisely, we settle interlacing properties for $E$-polynomials of series-parallel posets and column-strict labelled Ferrers posets.

Fock space constructions give rise to natural exchangeable families and are thus well suited for cumulant calculations. In this paper we develop some general formulas and compute cumulants for generalized Toeplitz operators, notably for q-Fock spaces, previously considered by M. Anshelevich and A. Nica, and Fock spaces for characters of the infinite symmetric group, which where constructed by Bozejko and Guta. An expression for cumulants in terms of the cycle-cover polynomials of certain directed graphs is obtained in this case.

The Toeplitz determinants (of increasing size) associated with the symbols $exp{t(z+z^{-1})}$ or $(1-ξ{z})^α (1-ξ{z^{-1}})^β$ satisfy recursion relations, thus expressing all the Toeplitz determinants as a rational function of the first few determinants. A. Borodin found these relations using Riemann-Hilbert methods.
The nature of Borodin's relations pointed towards the Toeplitz lattice and its Virasoro algebra, as developed by the authors. In this paper, we take the Toeplitz and Virasoro approach for a fairly large class of symbols, leading to a systematic and simple way of generating such recursion relations.
The latter are very naturally expressed in terms of the $L$-matrices appearing in the Lax pair for the Toeplitz lattice equations. As a surprise, we find, compared to Borodin's, a different set of relations, except for the 3-step relations associated with the symbol $ e^{t(z+z^{-1})}$. Moreover, these recursion relations define an invariant manifold for the Toeplitz lattice. This leads to a "discrete Painlevé property" (singularity confinement) for the rational recursion relations, as a consequence of the classical ``continuous Painlevé property" for the Toeplitz lattice.

We show that the set of totally positive unipotent lower-triangular Toeplitz matrices in $GL_n$ form a real semi-algebraic cell of dimension $n-1$. Furthermore we prove a natural cell decomposition for its closure. The proof uses properties of the quantum cohomology rings of the partial flag varieties of $GL_n(\C)$ relying in particular on the positivity of the structure constants, which are enumerative Gromov--Witten invariants. We also give a characterization of total positivity for Toeplitz matrices in terms of the (quantum) Schubert classes. This work builds on some results of Dale Peterson's which we explain with proofs in the type $A$ case.

We prove that Fredholm determinants of the form det(1-K_s), where K_s is the restriction of either the discrete Bessel kernel or the discrete {}_2F_1 kernel to {s,s+1,...}, can be expressed through solutions of discrete Painleve II and V equations, respectively.
These Fredholm determinants can also be viewed as distribution functions of the first part of the random partitions distributed according to a poissonized Plancherel measure and a z-measure, or as normalized Toeplitz determinants with symbols exp(η(u+1/u)) and (1+u)^z(1+ξ/u)^{z'}.
The proofs are based on a general formalism involving discrete integrable operators and discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem. A continuous version of the formalism has been worked out in math-ph/0111007.
On the determinant formulas by Borodin, Okounkov, Baik, Deift, and Rains
We give alternative proofs to (block case versions of) some formulas for Toeplitz and Fredholm determinants established recently by the authors of the title. Our proof of the Borodin-Okounkov formula is very short and direct. The proof of the Baik-Deift-Rains formulas is based on standard manipulations with Wiener-Hopf factorizations.

We obtain an identity between Fredholm determinants of two kinds of operators, one acting on functions on the unit circle and the other acting on functions on a subset of the integers. This identity is a generalization of an identity between a Toeplitz determinant and a Fredholm determinant that has appeared in the random permutation context. Using this identity, we prove, in particular, convergence of moments for arbitrary rows of a random Young diagram under Plancherel measure.

These lectures present a survey of recent developments in the area of random matrices (finite and infinite) and random permutations. These probabilistic problems suggest matrix integrals (or Fredholm determinants), which arise very naturally as integrals over the tangent space to symmetric spaces, as integrals over groups and finally as integrals over symmetric spaces. An important part of these lectures is devoted to showing that these matrix integrals, upon apropriately adding time-parameters, are natural tau-functions for integrable lattices, like the Toda, Pfaff and Toeplitz lattices, but also for integrable PDE's, like the KdV equation. These matrix integrals or Fredholm determinants also satisfy Virasoro constraints, which combined with the integrable equations lead to (partial) differential equations for the original probabilities.

This paper, a continuation of math.CO/9909169, connects the analysis of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence of inhomogeneous random words to a Riemann-Hilbert problem and an associated system of integrable PDEs. In particular, we show that the Poissonization of the distribution function of this length can be identified as the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function.

Matrix Fourier-like integrals over the classical groups O_+(n), O_-(n), Sp(n) and U(n) are connected with the distribution of the length of the longest increasing sequence in random permutations and random involutions and the spectrum of random matrices. One of the purposes of this paper is to show that all those integrals satisfy the Painlevé V equation with specific initial conditions. In this work, we present both, new results and known ones, in a unified way.
Our method consists of inserting one set of time variables t=(t_1,t_2,...) in the integrals for the real compact groups and two sets of times (t,s) for the unitary group. The point is that these new time-dependent integrals satisfy integrable hierarchies:
(i) O(n) and Sp(n) correspond to the standard Toda lattice. (ii) U(n) corresponds to the Toeplitz lattice, a very special reduction of the discrete sinh-Gordon equation.
Both systems, the standard Toda lattice and the Toeplitz lattice are also reductions of the 2-Toda lattice, thus leading to a natural vertex operator, and so, a natural Virasoro algebra, a subalgebra of which annihilates the tau-functions. Combining these equations leads to the Painlevé V equation for the integrals.

It is proved that the limiting distribution of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence in an inhomogeneous random word is related to the distribution function for the eigenvalues of a certain direct sum of Gaussian unitary ensembles subject to an overall constraint that the eigenvalues lie in a hyperplane.

We consider the distributions of the lengths of the longest weakly increasing and strongly decreasing subsequences in words of length N from an alphabet of k letters. We find Toeplitz determinant representations for the exponential generating functions (on N) of these distribution functions and show that they are expressible in terms of solutions of Painlevé V equations. We show further that in the weakly increasing case the generating function gives the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue in the k x k Laguerre random matrix ensemble and that the distribution itself has, after centering and normalizing, an N -> infinity limit which is equal to the distribution function for the largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of k x k hermitian matrices of trace zero.
