Further results on Andrews--Yee's two identities for mock theta functions $ω(z;q)$ and $v(z;q)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, by the method of comparing coefficients and the inverse technique, we establish the corresponding variate forms of two identities of Andrews and Yee for mock theta functions, as well as a few allied but unusual $q$-series identities. Among includes a new Bailey pair from which a product formula of two ${}_2φ_1$ series is derived. Further, we focus on two finite $q$-series summations arising from Andrews and Yee's mock theta function identities and expound some recurrence relations and transformation formulas behind them.

On Minrank and the Lovász Theta Function
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two classical upper bounds on the Shannon capacity of graphs are the $\vartheta$-function due to Lovász and the minrank parameter due to Haemers. We provide several explicit constructions of $n$-vertex graphs with a constant $\vartheta$-function and minrank at least $n^δ$ for a constant $δ>0$ (over various prime order fields). This implies a limitation on the $\vartheta$-function-based algorithmic approach to approximating the minrank parameter of graphs. The proofs involve linear spaces of multivariate polynomials and the method of higher incidence matrices.

Combinatorial proofs for identities related to generalizations of the mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$
Published in The Ramanujan Journal, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
The two partition functions $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ were introduced by Andrews, Dixit and Yee, which are related to the third order mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$, respectively. Recently, Andrews and Yee analytically studied two identities that connect the refinements of $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ with the generalized bivariate mock theta functions $ω(z;q)$ and $ν(z;q)$, respectively. However, they stated these identities cried out for bijective proofs. In this paper, we first define the generalized trivariate mock theta functions $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$. Then by utilizing odd Ferrers graph, we obtain certain identities concerning to $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$, which extend some early results of Andrews that are related to $ω(z;q)$ and $ν(z;q)$. In virtue of the combinatorial interpretations that arise from the identities involving $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$, we finally present bijective proofs for the two identities of Andrews-Yee.

A Notion of Total Dual Integrality for Convex, Semidefinite, and Extended Formulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Total dual integrality is a powerful and unifying concept in polyhedral combinatorics and integer programming that enables the refinement of geometric min-max relations given by linear programming Strong Duality into combinatorial min-max theorems. The definition of total dual integrality (TDI) revolves around the existence of optimal dual solutions that are integral, and thus naturally applies to a host of combinatorial optimization problems that are cast as integer programs whose LP relaxations have the TDIness property. However, when combinatorial problems are formulated using more general convex relaxations, such as semidefinite programs (SDPs), it is not at all clear what an appropriate notion of integrality in the dual program is, thus inhibiting the generalization of the theory to more general forms of structured convex optimization. (In fact, we argue that the rank-one constraint usually added to SDP relaxations is not adequate in the dual SDP.) In this paper, we propose a notion of total dual integrality for SDPs that generalizes the notion for LPs, by relying on an "integrality constraint" for SDPs that is primal-dual symmetric. A key ingredient for the theory is a generalization to compact convex sets of a result of Hoffman for polytopes, fundamental for generalizing the polyhedral notion of total dual integrality introduced by Edmonds and Giles. We study the corresponding theory applied to SDP formulations for stable sets in graphs using the Lovász theta function and show that total dual integrality in this case corresponds to the underlying graph being perfect. We also relate dual integrality of an SDP formulation for the maximum cut problem to bipartite graphs. Total dual integrality for extended formulations naturally comes into play in this context.

Vector Coloring the Categorical Product of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A vector $t$-coloring of a graph is an assignment of real vectors $p_1, \ldots, p_n$ to its vertices such that $p_i^Tp_i = t-1$ for all $i=1, \ldots, n$ and $p_i^Tp_j \le -1$ whenever $i$ and $j$ are adjacent. The vector chromatic number of $G$ is the smallest real number $t \ge 1$ for which a vector $t$-coloring of $G$ exists. For a graph $H$ and a vector $t$-coloring $p_1,\ldots,p_n$ of a graph $G$, the assignment $(i,\ell) \mapsto p_i$ is a vector $t$-coloring of the categorical product $G \times H$. It follows that the vector chromatic number of $G \times H$ is at most the minimum of the vector chromatic numbers of the factors. We prove that equality always holds, constituting a vector coloring analog of the famous Hedetniemi Conjecture from graph coloring. Furthermore, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for when all of the optimal vector colorings of the product can be expressed in terms of the optimal vector colorings of the factors. The vector chromatic number is closely related to the well-known Lovász theta function, and both of these parameters admit formulations as semidefinite programs. This connection to semidefinite programming is crucial to our work and the tools and techniques we develop could likely be of interest to others in this field.

Generalized Lambert Series Identities and Applications in Rank Differences
In this article, we prove two identities of generalized Lambert series. By introducing what we call $\mathcal{S}$-series, we establish relationships between multiple generalized Lambert series and multiple infinite products. Compared with Chan's work, these new identities are useful in generating various formulas for generalized Lambert series with the same poles. Using these formulas, we study the 3-dissection properties of ranks for overpartitions modulo 6. In this case, $-1$ appears as a unit root, so that double poles occur. We also relate these ranks to the third order mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ρ(q)$

Combinatorial Proofs of Two Overpartition Theorems Connected by a Universal Mock Theta Function
In 2015, Bringmann, Lovejoy and Mahlburg considered certain kinds overpartitions, which can been seen as the overpartition analogue of Schur's partition. The motivation of their work is that the difference between the generating function of Schur's classical partitions and the generating functions of the partitions in which the smallest part is excluded. The difference between the two generating functions of partitions is a specialization of the "universal" mock theta function g_3 which introduced by Hickerson. To give an analogue of this, by using another universal mock theta function g_2 instead of g_3, Bringmann Lovejoy and Mahlburg introduced two kinds of overpartitions, which satisfy certain congruence conditions and difference conditions with the smallest parts different. They prove these theorems by using the q-differential equations. In this paper, we will give the generating functions of these two kinds of overpartitions by combinatorial technique.

A combinatorial formula for graded multiplicities in excellent filtrations
Published in Transform. Groups 26 (2021), no. 1, 81-114 • View Publication • BIB
A filtration of a representation whose successive quotients are isomorphic to Demazure modules is called an excellent filtration. In this paper we study graded multiplicities in excellent filtrations of fusion products for the current algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2[t]$. We give a combinatorial formula for the polynomials encoding these multiplicities in terms of two dimensional lattice paths. Corollaries to our main theorem include a combinatorial interpretation of various objects such as the coeffficients of Ramanujan's fifth order mock theta functions $φ_0, φ_1, ψ_0, ψ_1$, Kostka polynomials for hook partitions and quotients of Chebyshev polynomials. We also get a combinatorial interpretation of the graded multiplicities in a level one flag of a local Weyl module associated to the simple Lie algebras of type $B_n \text{ and } G_2$.

On Andrews--Warnaar's identities of partial theta functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we set up a bivariate representation of partial theta functions which not only unifies some famous identities for partial theta functions due to Andrews and Warnaar, et al. but also unveils a new characteristic of such identities. As further applications, we establish a general form of Warnaar's identity and a general $q$--series transformation associated with Bailey pairs via the use of the power series expansion of partial theta functions.

Congruences for partition functions related to mock theta functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Partitions associated with mock theta functions have received a great deal of attention in the literature. Recently, Choi and Kim derived several partition identities from the third and sixth order mock theta functions. In addition, three Ramanujan-type congruences were established by them. In this paper, we present some new congruences for these partition functions.

The Lovász Theta Function for Random Regular Graphs and Community Detection in the Hard Regime
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive upper and lower bounds on the degree $d$ for which the Lovász $\vartheta$ function, or equivalently sum-of-squares proofs with degree two, can refute the existence of a $k$-coloring in random regular graphs $G_{n,d}$. We show that this type of refutation fails well above the $k$-colorability transition, and in particular everywhere below the Kesten-Stigum threshold. This is consistent with the conjecture that refuting $k$-colorability, or distinguishing $G_{n,d}$ from the planted coloring model, is hard in this region. Our results also apply to the disassortative case of the stochastic block model, adding evidence to the conjecture that there is a regime where community detection is computationally hard even though it is information-theoretically possible. Using orthogonal polynomials, we also provide explicit upper bounds on $\vartheta(\overline{G})$ for regular graphs of a given girth, which may be of independent interest.

Proof of the $(α,β)$--inversion formula conjectured by Hsu and Ma
In light of the well-known fact that the $n$th divided difference of any polynomial of degree $m$ must be zero while $m<n$,the present paper proves the $(α,β)$-inversion formula conjectured by Hsu and Ma [J. Math. Res. $\&$ Exposition 25(4) (2005) 624]. As applications of $(α,β)$-inversion, we not only recover some known matrix inversions due to Gasper, Schlosser, and Warnaar, but also fin three new matrix inversions related to elliptic divisibility sequence and theta functions.

Complexity of short generating functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give complexity analysis of the class of short generating functions (GF). Assuming $\#P \not\subseteq FP/poly$, we show that this class is not closed under taking many intersections, unions or projections of GFs, in the sense that these operations can increase the bitlength of coefficients of GFs by a super-polynomial factor. We also prove that truncated theta functions are hard in this class.

An overpartition analogue of $q$-binomial coefficients, II: combinatorial proofs and $(q,t)$-log concavity
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a previous paper, we studied an overpartition analogue of Gaussian polynomials as the generating function for overpartitions fitting inside an $m \times n$ rectangle. Here, we add one more parameter counting the number of overlined parts, obtaining a two-parameter generalization $\overline{m+n \brack n}_{q,t}$ of Gaussian polynomials, which is also a $(q,t)$-analogue of Delannoy numbers. First we obtain finite versions of classical $q$-series identities such as the $q$-binomial theorem and the Lebesgue identity, as well as two-variable generalizations of classical identities involving Gaussian polynomials. Then, by constructing involutions, we obtain an identity involving a finite theta function and prove the $(q,t)$-log concavity of $\overline{m+n \brack n}_{q,t}$. We particularly emphasize the role of combinatorial proofs and the consequences of our results on Delannoy numbers. We conclude with some conjectures about the unimodality of $\overline{m+n \brack n}_{q,t}$.

Fitness, Apprenticeship, and Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article discusses the design of the Apprenticeship Program at the Fields Institute, held 21 August - 3 September 2016. Six themes from combinatorial algebraic geometry were selected for the two weeks: curves, surfaces, Grassmannians, convexity, abelian combinatorics, parameters and moduli. The activities were structured into fitness, research and scholarship. Combinatorics and concrete computations with polynomials (and theta functions) empowers young scholars in algebraic geometry, and it helps them to connect with the historic roots of their field. We illustrate our perspective for the threefold obtained by blowing up six points in $\mathbb{P}^3$.

A $q$-series identity via the $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ colored Jones polynomials for the $(2,2m)$-torus link
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. (2018) vol. 146, no. 7, 355--374 • View Publication • BIB
The colored Jones polynomial is a $q$-polynomial invariant of links colored by irreducible representations of a simple Lie algebra. A $q$-series called a tail is obtained as the limit of the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ colored Jones polynomials $\{J_n(K;q)\}_n$ for some link $K$, for example, an alternating link. For the $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ colored Jones polynomials, the existence of a tail is unknown. We give two explicit formulas of the tail of the $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ colored Jones polynomials colored by $(n,0)$ for the $(2,2m)$-torus link. These two expressions of the tail provide an identity of $q$-series. This is a knot-theoretical generalization of the Andrews-Gordon identities for the Ramanujan false theta function.

Multiranks and classical theta functions

Multiranks and new rank/crank analogs for a variety of partitions are given, so as to imply combinatorially some arithmetic properties enjoyed by these types of partitions. Our methods are elementary relying entirely on the three classical theta functions, and are motivated by the seminal work of Ramanujan, Garvan, Hammond and Lewis.

Jacobi's triple product, mock theta functions, unimodal sequences and the $q$-bracket
Published • View Publication • BIB
In Ramanujan's final letter to Hardy, he listed examples of a strange new class of infinite series he called "mock theta functions". It turns out all of these examples are essentially specializations of a so-called universal mock theta function $g_3(z,q)$ of Gordon-McIntosh. Here we show that $g_3$ arises naturally from the reciprocal of the classical Jacobi triple product -- and is intimately tied to rank generating functions for unimodal sequences, which are connected to mock modular and quantum modular forms -- under the action of an operator related to statistical physics and partition theory, the $q$-bracket of Bloch-Okounkov. Secondly, we find $g_3(z,q)$ to extend in $q$ to the entire complex plane minus the unit circle, and give a finite formula for this universal mock theta function at roots of unity, that is simple by comparison to other such formulas in the literature; we also indicate similar formulas for other $q$-hypergeometric series. Finally, we look at interesting "quantum" behaviors of mock theta functions inside, outside, and on the unit circle.

Asymptotic approximation of central binomial coefficients with rigorous error bounds
Published in Open J. Math. Sci. 5 (2021), 380-386 • View Publication • BIB
We show that a well-known asymptotic series for the logarithm of the central binomial coefficient is strictly enveloping in the sense of Pólya and Szegö, so the error incurred in truncating the series is of the same sign as the next term, and is bounded in magnitude by that term. We consider closely related asymptotic series for Binet's function, for $\lnΓ(z+1/2)$, and for the Riemann-Siegel theta function, and make some historical remarks.
