Signed graphs have their edges labeled either as positive or negative. Here we introduce two types of signed distance matrix for signed graphs. We characterize balance in signed graphs using these matrices and we obtain explicit formulae for the distance spectrum of some unbalanced signed graphs. We also introduce the notion of distance-compatible signed graphs and partially characterize it.
List homomorphism problems for signed trees

We consider homomorphisms of signed graphs from a computational perspective. In particular, we study the list homomorphism problem seeking a homomorphism of an input signed graph $(G,σ)$, equipped with lists $L(v) \subseteq V(H), v \in V(G)$, of allowed images, to a fixed target signed graph $(H,π)$. The complexity of the similar homomorphism problem without lists (corresponding to all lists being $L(v)=V(H)$) has been previously classified by Brewster and Siggers, but the list version remains open and appears difficult. We illustrate this difficulty by classifying the complexity of the problem when $H$ is a tree (with possible loops). The tools we develop will be useful for classifications of other classes of signed graphs, and in a future companion paper we will illustrate this by using them to classify the complexity for certain irreflexive signed graphs. The structure of the signed trees in the polynomial cases is interesting, suggesting that the class of general signed graphs for which the problems are polynomial may have nice structure, analogous to the so-called bi-arc graphs (which characterized the polynomial cases of list homomorphisms to unsigned graphs).

Starting from the two-species partially asymmetric simple exclusion process, we study a subclass of signed permutations, the partially signed permutations, using the combinatorics of Laguerre histories. From this physical and bijective point of view, we obtain a natural descent statistic on partially signed permutations; as well as partially signed permutations patterns.
Improved Bound for Tomaszewski's Problem

In 1986, Tomaszewski made the following conjecture. Given $n$ real numbers $a_{1},...,a_{n}$ with $\sum_{i=1}^{n}a_{i}^{2}=1$, then of the $2^{n}$ signed sums $\pm a_{1} \pm ... \pm a_{n}$, at least half have absolute value at most $1$. Hendriks and Van Zuijlen (2020) and Boppana (2020) independently proved that a proportion of at least $0.4276$ of these sums has absolute value at most $1$. Using different techniques, we improve this bound to $0.46$.
A spectral method to incidence balance of oriented hypergraphs and induced signed hypergraphs

An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph together with an incidence orientation such that each edge-vertex incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. An oriented hypergraph is called incidence balanced if there exists a bipartition of the vertex set such that every edge intersects one part of the bipartition in positively incident vertices with the edge and other part in negatively incident vertices with the edge. In this paper, we investigate the incidence balance of oriented hypergraphs and induced signed hypergraphs by means of the eigenvalues of associated matrices and tensors, and provide a spectral method to characterize the incidence balanced oriented hypergraphs and their induced signed hypergraphs.
Positive Geometries and Differential Forms with Non-Logarithmic Singularities I

Positive geometries encode the physics of scattering amplitudes in flat space-time and the wavefunction of the universe in cosmology for a large class of models. Their unique canonical forms, providing such quantum mechanical observables, are characterised by having only logarithmic singularities along all the boundaries of the positive geometry. However, physical observables have logarithmic singularities just for a subset of theories. Thus, it becomes crucial to understand whether a similar paradigm can underlie their structure in more general cases. In this paper we start a systematic investigation of a geometric-combinatorial characterisation of differential forms with non-logarithmic singularities, focusing on projective polytopes and related meromorphic forms with multiple poles. We introduce the notions of covariant forms and covariant pairings. Covariant forms have poles only along the boundaries of the given polytope; moreover, their leading Laurent coefficients along any of the boundaries are still covariant forms on the specific boundary. Whereas meromorphic forms in covariant pairing with a polytope are associated to a specific (signed) triangulation, in which poles on spurious boundaries do not cancel completely, but their order is lowered. These meromorphic forms can be fully characterised if the polytope they are associated to is viewed as the restriction of a higher dimensional one onto a hyperplane. The canonical form of the latter can be mapped into a covariant form or a form in covariant pairing via a covariant restriction. We show how the geometry of the higher dimensional polytope determines the structure of these differential forms. Finally, we discuss how these notions are related to Jeffrey-Kirwan residues and cosmological polytopes.
Flow-Partitionable Signed Graphs
The NP-hard problem of correlation clustering is to partition a signed graph such that the number of conflicts between the partition and the signature of the graph is minimized. This paper studies graph signatures that allow the optimal partition to be found efficiently. We define the class of flow-partitionable signed graphs, which have the property that the standard linear programming relaxation based on so-called cycle inequalities is tight. In other words, flow-partitionable signed graphs satisfy an exact max-multiflow-min-multicut relation in the associated instances of minimum multicut. In this work we propose to characterize flow-partitionable signed graphs in terms of forbidden minors. Our initial results include two infinite classes of forbidden minors, which are sufficient if the positive subgraph is a circuit or a tree. For the general case we present another forbidden minor and point out a connection to open problems in the theory of ideal clutters.
Counterexamples to conjectures by Gross, Mansour and Tucker on partial-dual genus polynomials of ribbon graphs

Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-dual orientable genus polynomial and the partial-dual Euler genus polynomial. They computed these two partial-dual genus polynomials of four families of ribbon graphs, posed some research problems and made some conjectures. In this paper, we introduce the notion of signed sequences of bouquets and obtain the partial-dual Euler genus polynomials for all ribbon graphs with the number of edges less than 4 and the partial-dual orientable genus polynomials for all orientable ribbon graphs with the number of edges less than 5 in terms of signed sequences. We check all the conjectures and find a counterexample to the Conjecture 3.1 in their paper: There is no orientable ribbon graph having a non-constant partial-dual genus polynomial with only one non-zero coefficient. Motivated by this counterexample, we further find an infinite family of counterexamples to the conjecture. Moreover, we find a counterexample to the Conjecture 5.3 in their paper: The partial-dual Euler-genus polynomial for any non-orientable ribbon graph is interpolating.
Spectral symmetry in conference matrices

A conference matrix of order $n$ is an $n\times n$ matrix $C$ with diagonal entries $0$ and off-diagonal entries $\pm 1$ satisfying $CC^\top=(n-1)I$. If $C$ is symmetric, then $C$ has a symmetric spectrum $Σ$ (that is, $Σ=-Σ$) and eigenvalues $\pm\sqrt{n-1}$. We show that many principal submatrices of $C$ also have symmetric spectrum, which leads to examples of Seidel matrices of graphs (or, equivalently, adjacency matrices of complete signed graphs) with a symmetric spectrum. In addition, we show that some Seidel matrices with symmetric spectrum can be characterized by this construction.
Shift-Plethystic Trees and Rogers-Ramanujan Identitites
By studying non-commutative series in an infinite alphabet we introduce shift-plethystic trees and a class of integer compositions as new combinatorial models for the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We prove that the language associated to shift-plethystic trees can be expressed as a non-commutative generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction. By specializing the noncommutative series to $q$-series we obtain new combinatorial interpretations to the Rogers-Ramanujan identities in terms of signed integer compositions. We introduce the operation of shift-plethysm on non-commutative series and use this to obtain interesting enumerative identities involving compositions and partitions related to Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

The energy and iota energy of signed digraphs are respectively defined as the sum of absolute values of real parts and sum of absolute values of imaginary parts of its eigenvalues. Recently, Yang and Wang (2018) find the energy and iota energy ordering of digraphs in D(n) and compute the maximal energy and iota energy, where D(n) denotes the set of vertex-disjoint bicyclic digraphs of a fixed order n. In this paper, we investigate the energy ordering of signed digraphs in D(n,s) and finds the maximal energy, where D(n,s) denotes the set of vertex-disjoint bicyclic sidigraphs of a fixed order n.
The Worpitzky identity for the groups of signed and even-signed permutations

The well-known Worpitzky identity provides a connection between two bases of $\mathbb{Q}[x]$: The standard basis $(x+1)^n$ and the binomial basis ${{x+n-i} \choose {n}}$, where the Eulerian numbers for the Coxeter group of type $A$ (the symmetric group) serve as the entries of the transformation matrix. Brenti has generalized this identity to the Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$ (signed and even-signed permutations groups, respectively) using generating function techniques.
Motivated by Foata-Schützenberger and Rawlings' proof for the Worpitzky identity in the symmetric group, we provide combinatorial proofs of this identity and for their $q-$analogues in the Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$.
Iota energy orderings of bicyclic signed digraphs

The concept of energy of a signed digraph is extended to iota energy of a signed digraph. The energy of a signed digraph $S$ is defined by $E(S)=\sum_{k=1}^n|\text{Re}(z_k)|$, where $\text{Re}(z_k)$ is the real part of eigenvalue $z_k$ and $z_k$ is the eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $S$ with $n$ vertices, $k=1,2,\ldots,n$. Then the iota energy of $S$ is defined by $E(S)=\sum_{k=1}^n|\text{Im}(z_k)|$, where $\text{Im}(z_k)$ is the imaginary part of eigenvalue $z_k$. In this paper, we consider a special graph class for bicyclic signed digraphs $\mathcal{S}_n$ with $n$ vertices which have two vertex-disjoint signed directed even cycles. We give two iota energy orderings of bicyclic signed digraphs, one is including two positive or two negative directed even cycles, the other is including one positive and one negative directed even cycles.

A signed graph is said to be sign-symmetric if it is switching isomorphic to its negation. Bipartite signed graphs are trivially sign-symmetric. We give new constructions of non-bipartite sign-symmetric signed graphs. Sign-symmetric signed graphs have a symmetric spectrum but not the other way around. We present constructions of signed graphs with symmetric spectra which are not sign-symmetric. This, in particular answers a problem posed by Belardo, Cioabă, Koolen, and Wang (2018).

We propose a unified approach to prove general formulas for the joint distribution of an Eulerian and a Mahonian statistic over a set of colored permutations by specializing Poirier's colored quasisymmetric functions. We apply this method to derive formulas for Euler-Mahonian distributions on colored permutations, derangements and involutions. A number of known formulas are recovered as special cases of our results, including formulas of Biagioli-Zeng, Assaf, Haglund-Loehr-Remmel, Chow-Mansour, Biagioli-Caselli, Bagno-Biagioli, Faliharimalala-Zeng. Several new results are also obtained. For instance, a two-parameter flag major index on signed permutations is introduced and formulas for its distribution and its joint distribution with some Eulerian partners are proven.

In this paper, we show that every connected signed graph with smallest eigenvalue strictly greater than $-2$ and large enough minimum degree is switching equivalent to a complete graph. This is a signed analogue of a theorem of Hoffman. The proof is based on what we call Hoffman's limit theorem which we formulate for Hermitian matrices, and also the extension of the concept of Hoffman graph and line graph for the setting of signed graphs.

Let $G$ be a Cayley graph of the elementary abelian $2$-group $\mathbb{Z}_2^{n}$ with respect to a set $S$ of size $d$. We prove that for any such $G, S$ and $d$, the maximum degree of any induced subgraph of $G$ on any set of more than half the vertices is at least $\sqrt d$. This is deduced from the recent breakthrough result of Huang who proved the above for the $n$-hypercube $Q^n$, in which the set of generators $S$ is the set of all vectors of Hamming weight $1$. Motivated by his method we define and study unitary signings of adjacency matrices of graphs, and compare them to the orthogonal signings of Huang. As a byproduct, we answer a recent question of Belardo et. al. about the spectrum of signed $5$-regular graphs.

Brouwer's Conjecture states that, for any graph $G$, the sum of the $k$ largest (combinatorial) Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ is at most $|E(G)| + \binom{k+1}{2}$, $1 \leq k \leq n$. We present several interrelated results establishing Brouwer's conjecture $\text{BC}_k(G)$ for a wide range of graphs $G$ and parameters $k$. In particular, we show that (1) $\text{BC}_k(G)$ is true for low-arboricity graphs, and in particular for planar $G$ when $k \geq 11$; (2) $\text{BC}_k(G)$ is true whenever the variance of the degree sequence is not very high, generalizing previous results for $G$ regular or random; (3) $\text{BC}_k(G)$ is true if $G$ belongs to a hereditarily spectrally-bounded class and $k$ is sufficiently large as a function of $k$, in particular $k \geq \sqrt{32n}$ for bipartite graphs; (4) $\text{BC}_k(G)$ holds unless $G$ has edge-edit distance $< k \sqrt{2n} = O(n^{3/2})$ from a split graph; (5) no $G$ violates the conjectured upper bound by more than $O(n^{5/4})$, and bipartite $G$ by no more than $O(n)$; and (6) $\text{BC}_k(G)$ holds for all $k$ outside an interval of length $O(n^{3/4})$. Furthermore, we present a surprising negative result: asymptotically almost surely, a uniform random signed complete graph violates the conjectured bound by $Ω(n)$.
An improvement of the Boppana-Holzman bound for Rademacher random variables
Let $v_1,v_2,...,v_n$ be real numbers whose squares add up to $1$. Consider the $2^n$ signed sums of the form $S=\sum_{i=1}^n \pm v_i.$ Holzman and Kleitman (1992) proved that at least $\frac38=0.375$ of these sums satisfy $|S|\leq 1.$ By using bounds for appropriate moments of $S,$ Boppana and Holzman (2017) were able to improve the bound to $\frac{13}{32}=0.40625$ and even a bit better to $\frac{13}{32}+9\times10^{-6}.$ By following their approach, but using a key result of Bentkus and Dzindzalieta (2015), we will drastically improve (by more than 5\%) the latter barrier $\frac{13}{32}$ to $\frac{1}{2}-\frac{Φ(-2)}{4Φ(-\sqrt{2})}\approx 0.42768.$
