The ring of stable characters over $\text{GL}_\bullet(q)$
For a fixed prime power $q$, let $\text{GL}_\bullet(q)$ denote the family of groups $\text{GL}_N(q)$ for $N \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$. In this paper we study the $\mathbb{C}$-algebra of "stable" class functions of $\text{GL}_\bullet(q)$, and show it admits four different linear bases, each arising naturally in different settings. One such basis is that of stable irreducible characters, namely, the class functions spanned by the characters corresponding to finitely generated simple $\mathrm{VI}$-modules in the sense of [arXiv:1408.3694,arXiv:1602.00654]. A second one comes from characters of parabolic representations. The final two, one originally defined in [arXiv:1803.04155] and the other in [arXiv:2110.11099], are more combinatorial in nature. As corollaries, we clarify many properties of these four bases and prove a conjecture from [arXiv:2106.11587].
Centraliser algebras of monomial representations and applications in combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
Centraliser algebras of monomial representations of finite groups may be constructed and studied using methods similar to those employed in the study of permutation groups. Guided by results of D. G. Higman and others, we give an explicit construction for a basis of the centraliser algebra of a monomial representation. The character table of this algebra is then constructed via character sums over double cosets. We locate the theory of group-developed and cocyclic-developed Hadamard matrices within this framework. We apply Gröbner bases to produce a new classification of highly symmetric complex Hadamard matrices.

Writing finite simple groups of Lie type as products of subset conjugates
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture [LNS12] asserts that, for any finite simple non-abelian group $G$ and any set $A\subseteq G$ with $|A|\geq 2$, $G$ is the product of at most $N\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}$ conjugates of $A$, for some absolute constant $N$. For $G$ of Lie type, we prove that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there is some $N_{\varepsilon}$ for which $G$ is the product of at most $N_{\varepsilon}\left(\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}\right)^{1+\varepsilon}$ conjugates of either $A$ or $A^{-1}$. For symmetric sets, this improves on results of Liebeck, Nikolov, and Shalev [LNS12] and Gill, Pyber, Short, and Szabó [GPSS13]. During the preparation of this paper, the proof of the Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture was completed by Lifshitz [Lif24]. Both papers use [GLPS24] as a starting point. Lifshitz's argument uses heavy machinery from representation theory to complete the conjecture, whereas this paper achieves a more modest result by rather elementary combinatorial arguments.
Ideals, representations and a symmetrised Bernoulli triangle

We study some representations of symmetric groups arising from a certain ideal in the coordinate ring of affine n-space. Our results give graded and representation-theoretic enhancements of sequence 337 of the Online Encyclopaedia of Integer Sequences, involving a symmetric version of the Bernoulli triangle.

Artin Symmetric Functions
In this paper we construct an algebraic invariant attached to Galois representations over number fields. This invariant, which we call an Artin symmetric function, lives in a certain ring we introduce called the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions. This ring is built from a family of symmetric functions rings indexed by prime ideals of the base field. We prove many necessary basic results for the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions as well as introduce the analogues of some standard number-theoretic objects in this setting. We prove that the Artin symmetric functions satisfy the same algebraic properties that the Artin L-functions do with respect to induction, inflation, and direct summation of representations. The expansion coefficients of these symmetric functions in different natural bases are shown to be character values of representations of a compact group related to the original Galois group. In the most interesting case, the expansion coefficients into a specialized Hall-Littlewood basis come from new representations built from the original Galois representation using polynomial functors corresponding to modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Using a special case of the Satake isomorphism in type GL, as formulated by Macdonald, we show that the Artin symmetric functions yield families of functions in the (finite) global spherical Hecke algebras in type GL which exhibit natural stability properties. We compute the Mellin transforms of these functions and relate them to infinite products of shifted Artin L-functions. We then prove some analytic properties of these Dirichlet series and give an explicit expansion of these series using the Hall-Littlewood polynomial functors.
Shifts of Finite Type Obtained by Forbidding a Single Pattern

Given a finite word $w$, Guibas and Odlyzko (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) showed that the autocorrelation polynomial $φ_w(t)$ of $w$, which records the set of self-overlaps of $w$, explicitly determines for each $n$, the number $|B_n(w)|$ of words of length $n$ that avoid $w$. We consider this and related problems from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics, focusing on the setting of $X_{\{w\}}$, the space of all bi-infinite sequences that avoid $w$. We first summarize and elaborate upon (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) and other work to show that the sequence $|B_n(w)|$ is equivalent to several invariants of $X_{\{w\}}$. We then give a finite-state labeled graphical representation $L_w$ of $X_{\{w\}}$ and show that $w$ can be recovered from the graph isomorphism class of the unlabeled version of $L_w$. Using $L_w$, we apply ideas from probability and Perron-Frobenius theory to obtain results comparing features of $X_{\{w\}}$ for different $w$. Next, we give partial results on the problem of classifying the spaces $X_{\{w\}}$ up to conjugacy. Finally, we extend some of our results to spaces of multi-dimensional arrays that avoid a given finite pattern.

On Christoffel words & their lexicographic array
Published • View Publication • BIB
By a Christoffel matrix we mean a $n\times n$ matrix corresponding to the lexicographic array of a Christoffel word of length $n.$ In this note we show that if $R$ is an integral domain, then the product of two Christoffel matrices over $R$ is commutative and is a Christoffel matrix over $R.$ Furthermore, if a Christoffel matrix over $R$ is invertible, then its inverse is a Christoffel matrix over $R.$ Consequently, the set $GC_n(R)$ of all $n\times n$ invertible Christoffel matrices over $R$ forms an abelian subgroup of $GL_n(R).$ The subset of $GC_n(R)$ consisting all invertible Christoffel matrices having some element $a$ on the diagonal and $b$ elsewhere (with $a,b \in R$ distinct) forms a subgroup $H$ of $GC_n(R).$ If $R$ is a field, then the quotient $GC_n(R)/H$ is isomorphic to $(\Z/nZ)^\times,$ the multiplicative group of integers modulo $n.$ It follows that for each finite field $F$ and each finite abelian group $G,$ there exists $n\geq 2$ and a faithful representation $G\rightarrow GL_n(F)$ consisting entirely of $n\times n$ (invertible) Christoffel matrices over $F.$ We describe the structure of $GC_n(\Z/2\Z).$

Deformed Homogeneous Polynomials and the Generalized $q$-Exponential Operator
In this paper, we introduce the deformed homogeneous polynomials $\mathrm{R}_{n}(x,y;u|q)$. These polynomials generalize some classical polynomials: the Rogers-Szegö polynomials $\mathrm{h}_{n}(x|q)$, the generalized Rogers-Szegö polynomials $\mathrm{r}_{n}(x,y)$, the Stieltjes-Wigert polynomials $\mathrm{S}_{n}(x;q)$, among others. Basic properties of the polynomial $\mathrm{R}_{n}$ are given, along with recurrence relations, its $q$-difference equation, and representations. Generating functions for the polynomials $\mathrm{R}_{n}(x,y;u|q)$ are given. These functions include generalizations of the Mehler and Rogers formulas. In addition, generalizations of the $q$-binomial formula and the Heine transformation formula are obtained. These results are obtained via the $u$-deformed $q$-exponential operator $\mathrm{E}(yD_{q}|u)$, defined here. From this operator, we obtain for free the operators T$(yD_{q})$ the Chen, $\mathrm{R}(yD_{q})$ of Saad, $\mathcal{E}(yD_{q})$ of Exton, and $\mathcal{R}(yD_{q})$ of Rogers-Ramanujan when $u=1,q,\sqrt{q},q^2$, respectively. We introduce the deformed basic hypergeometric series ${}_{r}Φ_{s}$, a generalization of the classical basic hypergeometric series. New transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series are obtained.
Adjacency Labeling Schemes for Small Classes
A graph class admits an implicit representation if, for every positive integer $n$, its $n$-vertex graphs have a $O(\log n)$-bit (adjacency) labeling scheme, i.e., their vertices can be labeled by binary strings of length $O(\log n)$ such that the presence of an edge between any pair of vertices can be deduced solely from their labels. The famous Implicit Graph Conjecture posited that every hereditary (i.e., closed under taking induced subgraphs) factorial (i.e., containing $2^{O(n \log n)}$ $n$-vertex graphs) class admits an implicit representation. The conjecture was recently refuted [Hatami and Hatami, FOCS '22], and does not even hold among monotone (i.e., closed under taking subgraphs) factorial classes [Bonnet et al., ICALP '24]. However, monotone small (i.e., containing at most $n! c^n$ many $n$-vertex graphs for some constant $c$) classes do admit implicit representations. This motivates the Small Implicit Graph Conjecture: Every hereditary small class admits an $O(\log n)$-bit labeling scheme. We provide evidence supporting the Small Implicit Graph Conjecture. First, we show that every small weakly sparse (i.e., excluding some fixed bipartite complete graph as a subgraph) class has an implicit representation. This is a consequence of the following fact of independent interest proved in the paper: Every weakly sparse small class has bounded expansion (hence, in particular, bounded degeneracy). Second, we show that every hereditary small class admits an $O(\log^3 n)$-bit labeling scheme, which provides a substantial improvement of the best-known polynomial upper bound of $n^{1-\varepsilon}$ on the size of adjacency labeling schemes for such classes. This is a consequence of another fact of independent interest proved in the paper: Every small class has neighborhood complexity $O(n \log n)$.

Characterization of Circular-arc Graphs: III. Chordal Graphs
We identify all minimal chordal graphs that are not circular-arc graphs, thereby resolving one of ``the main open problems'' concerning the structures of circular-arc graphs as posed by Dur{á}n, Grippo, and Safe in 2011. The problem had been attempted even earlier, and previous efforts have yielded partial results, particularly for claw-free graphs and graphs with an independence number of at most four. The answers turn out to have very simple structures: all the nontrivial ones belong to a single family. Our findings are based on a structural study of McConnell's flipping, which transforms circular-arc graphs into interval graphs with certain representation patterns.

A complete classification of perfect unitary Cayley graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Due to their elegant and simple nature, unitary Cayley graphs have been an active research topic in the literature. These graphs are naturally connected to several branches of mathematics, including number theory, finite algebra, representation theory, and graph theory. In this article, we study the perfectness property of these graphs. More precisely, we provide a complete classification of perfect unitary Cayley graphs associated with finite rings.

On the gcd graphs over polynomial rings
Gcd-graphs over the ring of integers modulo $n$ are a natural generalization of unitary Cayley graphs. The study of these graphs has foundations in various mathematical fields, including number theory, ring theory, and representation theory. Using the theory of Ramanujan sums, it is known that these gcd-graphs have integral spectra; i.e., all their eigenvalues are integers. In this work, inspired by the analogy between number fields and function fields, we define and study gcd-graphs over polynomial rings with coefficients in finite fields. We establish some fundamental properties of these graphs, emphasizing their analogy to their counterparts over $\mathbb{Z}.$

Orthogonal roots, Macdonald representations, and quasiparabolic sets
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e110 • View Publication • BIB
Let $W$ be a simply laced Weyl group of finite type and rank $n$. If $W$ has type $E_7$, $E_8$, or $D_n$ for $n$ even, then the root system of $W$ has subsystems of type $nA_1$. This gives rise to an irreducible Macdonald representation of $W$ spanned by $n$-roots, which are products of $n$ orthogonal roots in the symmetric algebra of the reflection representation. We prove that in these cases, the set of all maximal sets of orthogonal positive roots has the structure of a quasiparabolic set in the sense of Rains--Vazirani. The quasiparabolic structure can be described in terms of certain quadruples of orthogonal positive roots which we call crossings, nestings, and alignments. This leads to nonnesting and noncrossing bases for the Macdonald representation, as well as some highly structured partially ordered sets. We use the $8$-roots in type $E_8$ to give a concise description of a graph that is known to be non-isomorphic but quantum isomorphic to the orthogonality graph of the $E_8$ root system.

Coverings of Groups, Regular Dessins, and Surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
A coset geometry representation of regular dessins is established, and employed to describe quotients and coverings of regular dessins and surfaces. A characterization is then given of face-quasiprimitive regular dessins as coverings of unicellular regular dessins. It shows that there are exactly three O'Nan-Scott-Praeger types of face-quasiprimitive regular dessins which are smooth coverings of unicellular regular dessins, leading to new constructions of interesting families of regular dessins. Finally, a problem of determining smooth Schur covering of simple groups is initiated by studying coverings between $\SL(2,p)$ and $\PSL(2,p)$, giving rise to interesting regular dessins like Fibonacci coverings.
A Note on the Number of Representations of $n$ as a Sum of Generalized Polygonal Numbers
Published in Integers 23 (2023), A40 • Search Publication
Recently, Jha (arXiv:2007.04243, arXiv:2011.11038) has found identities that connect certain sums over the divisors of $n$ to the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of squares and triangular numbers. In this note, we state a generalized result that gives such relations for $s$-gonal numbers for any integer $s\geq3$.

The quasi-polynomiality of mod q permutation representation for a linear finite group action on a lattice
Published • View Publication • BIB
For given linear action of a finite group on a lattice and a positive integer q, we prove that the mod q permutation representation is a quasi-polynomial in q. Additionally, we establish several results that can be considered as mod q-analogues of results by Stapledon for equivariant Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. We also prove a reciprocity-type result for multiplicities of irreducible decompositions.

Connections Between Combinations Without Specified Separations and Strongly Restricted Permutations, Compositions, and Bit Strings

Let $S_n$ and $S_{n,k}$ be, respectively, the number of subsets and $k$-subsets of $\mathbb{N}_n=\{1,\ldots,n\}$ such that no two subset elements differ by an element of the set $\mathcal{Q}$, the largest element of which is $q$. We prove a bijection between such $k$-subsets when $\mathcal{Q}=\{m,2m,\ldots,jm\}$ with $j,m>0$ and permutations $π$ of $\mathbb{N}_{n+jm}$ with $k$ excedances satisfying $π(i)-i\in\{-m,0,jm\}$ for all $i\in\mathbb{N}_{n+jm}$. We also identify a bijection between another class of restricted permutation and the cases $\mathcal{Q}=\{1,q\}$ and derive the generating function for $S_n$ when $q=4,5,6$. We give some classes of $\mathcal{Q}$ for which $S_n$ is also the number of compositions of $n+q$ into a given set of allowed parts. We also prove a bijection between $k$-subsets for a class of $\mathcal{Q}$ and the set representations of size $k$ of equivalence classes for the occurrence of a given length-($q+1$) subword within bit strings. We then formulate a straightforward procedure for obtaining the generating function for the number of such equivalence classes.

Stable matchings, choice functions, and linear orders
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a model of stable edge sets (``matchings'') in a bipartite graph $G=(V,E)$ in which the preferences for vertices of one side (``firms'') are given via choice functions subject to standard axioms of consistency, substitutability and cardinal monotonicity, whereas the preferences for the vertices of the other side (``workers'') via linear orders. For such a model, we present a combinatorial description of the structure of rotations and develop an algorithm to construct the poset of rotations, in time $O(|E|^2)$ (including oracle calls). As consequences, one can obtain a ``compact'' affine representation of stable matchings and efficiently solve some related problems. On $q$-deformed cubic equations: the quantum heptagon and nonagon
Published • View Publication • BIB
The recent notion of $q$-deformed irrational numbers is characterized by the invariance with respect to the action of the modular group $\PSL(2,\Z)$, or equivalently under the Burau representation of the braid group~$B_3$. The theory of $q$-deformed quadratic irrationals and quadratic equations with integer coefficients is known and entirely based on this invariance. In this paper, we consider the case of cubic irrationals. We show that irreducible cubic equations with three distinct real roots and cyclic Galois group~$C_3$ (or $\Z/3\Z$) acting by a third order element of $\PSL(2,\Z)$, have a canonical $q$-deformation, that we describe. This class of cubic equations contains well-known examples including the equations that describe regular $7$- and $9$-gons.

A strange five vertex model and multispecies ASEP on a ring
Published • View Publication • BIB
We revisit the problem of constructing the stationary states of the multispecies asymmetric simple exclusion process on a one-dimensional periodic lattice. Central to our approach is a quantum oscillator weighted five vertex model which features a strange weight conservation distinct from the conventional one. Our results clarify the interrelations among several known results and refine their derivations. For instance, the stationary probability derived from the multiline queue construction by Martin (2020) and Corteel--Mandelshtam--Williams (2022) is identified with the partition function of a three-dimensional system. The matrix product operators by Prolhac--Evans--Mallick (2009) acquire a natural diagrammatic interpretation as corner transfer matrices (CTM). The origin of their recursive tensor structure, as questioned by Aggarwal--Nicoletti--Petrov (2023), is revealed through the CTM diagrams. Finally, the derivation of the Zamolodchikov--Faddeev algebra by Cantini--de Gier--Wheeler (2015) is made intrinsic by elucidating its precise connection to a solution to the Yang--Baxter equation originating from quantum group representations.
