Iterated claws have real-rooted genus polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the genus polynomials of the graphs called iterated claws are real-rooted. This continues our work directed toward the 25-year-old conjecture that the genus distribution of every graph is log-concave. We have previously established log-concavity for sequences of graphs constructed by iterative vertex-amalgamation or iterative edge-amalgamation of graphs that satisfy a commonly observable condition on their partitioned genus distributions, even though it had been proved previously that iterative amalgamation does not always preserve real-rootedness of the genus polynomial of the iterated graph. In this paper, the iterated topological operations are adding a claw and adding a 3-cycle, rather than vertex- or edge-amalgamation. Our analysis here illustrates some advantages of employing a matrix representation of the transposition of a set of productions.

Every totally real algebraic integer is a tree eigenvalue
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graph eigenvalues are examples of totally real algebraic integers, i.e. roots of real-rooted monic polynomials with integer coefficients. Conversely, the fact that every totally real algebraic integer occurs as an eigenvalue of some finite graph is a deep result, conjectured forty years ago by Hoffman, and proved seventeen years later by Estes. This short paper provides an independent and elementary proof of a stronger statement, namely that the graph may actually be chosen to be a tree. As a by-product, our result implies that the atoms of the limiting spectrum of $n\times n$ symmetric matrices with independent Bernoulli$\,\left(\frac{c}{n}\right)$ entries ($c>0$ is fixed as $n\to\infty$) are exactly the totally real algebraic integers. This settles an open problem raised by Ben Arous (2010).

The Real-Rootedness and Log-concavities of Coordinator Polynomials of Weyl Group Lattices
Published in European. J. Combin. 34 (2013) 490-494 • View Publication • BIB
It is well-known that the coordinator polynomials of the classical root lattice of type $A_n$ and those of type $C_n$ are real-rooted. They can be obtained, either by the Aissen-Schoenberg-Whitney theorem, or from their recurrence relations. In this paper, we develop a trigonometric substitution approach which can be used to establish the real-rootedness of coordinator polynomials of type $D_n$. We also find the coordinator polynomials of type $B_n$ are not real-rooted in general. As a conclusion, we obtain that all coordinator polynomials of Weyl group lattices are log-concave.

Questions about determinants and polynomials
We discuss several conjectures about the real-rootedness of polynomials whose coefficients are determinants of coefficients of a real-rooted polynomial. We also consider some questions about matrices generalizing totally positive matrices, namely totally stable matrices and totally upper matrices.

Infinite log-concavity: developments and conjectures
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 44 (1) (2010), 1-15 • View Publication • BIB
Given a sequence (a_k) = a_0, a_1, a_2,... of real numbers, define a new sequence L(a_k) = (b_k) where b_k = a_k^2 - a_{k-1} a_{k+1}. So (a_k) is log-concave if and only if (b_k) is a nonnegative sequence. Call (a_k) "infinitely log-concave" if L^i(a_k) is nonnegative for all i >= 1. Boros and Moll conjectured that the rows of Pascal's triangle are infinitely log-concave. Using a computer and a stronger version of log-concavity, we prove their conjecture for the nth row for all n <= 1450. We also use our methods to give a simple proof of a recent result of Uminsky and Yeats about regions of infinite log-concavity. We investigate related questions about the columns of Pascal's triangle, q-analogues, symmetric functions, real-rooted polynomials, and Toeplitz matrices. In addition, we offer several conjectures.

On operators on polynomials preserving real-rootedness and the Neggers-Stanley Conjecture
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 20 (2004), no. 2, 119--130 • Search Publication
We refine a technique used in a paper by Schur on real-rooted polynomials. This amounts to an extension of a theorem of Wagner on Hadamard products of Toeplitz matrices. We also apply our results to polynomials for which the Neggers-Stanley Conjecture is known to hold. More precisely, we settle interlacing properties for $E$-polynomials of series-parallel posets and column-strict labelled Ferrers posets.
