Random words, quantum statistics, central limits, random matrices
Published in Methods Appl. Anal. 9 (2002), no. 1, 101-119 • View Publication • BIB
Recently Tracy and Widom conjectured [math.CO/9904042] and Johansson proved [math.CO/9906120] that the expected shape λof the semi-standard tableau produced by a random word in k letters is asymptotically the spectrum of a random traceless k by k GUE matrix. In this article we give two arguments for this fact. In the first argument, we realize the random matrix itself as a quantum random variable on the space of random words, if this space is viewed as a quantum state space. In the second argument, we show that the distribution of λis asymptotically given by the usual local limit theorem, but the resulting Gaussian is disguised by an extra polynomial weight and by reflecting walls. Both arguments more generally apply to an arbitrary finite-dimensional representation V of an arbitrary simple Lie algebra g. In the original question, V is the defining representation of g = su(k).

Universality of correlations of levels with discrete statistics
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the statistics of a system of N random levels with integer values, in the presence of a logarithmic repulsive potential of Dyson type. This probleme arises in sums over representations (Young tableaux) of GL(N) in various matrix problems and in the study of statistics of partitions for the permutation group. The model is generalized to include an external source and its correlators are found in closed form for any N. We reproduce the density of levels in the large N and double scaling limits and the universal correlation functions in Dyson's short-distance scaling limit. We also study the statistics of small levels.
The Scaling Window of the 2-SAT Transition
Published in Random Structures and Algorithms 18(3):201--256, 2001 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the random 2-satisfiability problem, in which each instance is a formula that is the conjunction of m clauses of the form (x or y), chosen uniformly at random from among all 2-clauses on n Boolean variables and their negations. As m and n tend to infinity in the ratio m/n --> alpha, the problem is known to have a phase transition at alpha_c = 1, below which the probability that the formula is satisfiable tends to one and above which it tends to zero. We determine the finite-size scaling about this transition, namely the scaling of the maximal window W(n,delta) = (alpha_-(n,delta),alpha_+(n,delta)) such that the probability of satisfiability is greater than 1-delta for alpha < alpha_- and is less than delta for alpha > alpha_+. We show that W(n,delta)=(1-Theta(n^{-1/3}),1+Theta(n^{-1/3})), where the constants implicit in Theta depend on delta. We also determine the rates at which the probability of satisfiability approaches one and zero at the boundaries of the window. Namely, for m=(1+epsilon)n, where epsilon may depend on n as long as |epsilon| is sufficiently small and |epsilon|*n^(1/3) is sufficiently large, we show that the probability of satisfiability decays like exp(-Theta(n*epsilon^3)) above the window, and goes to one like 1-Theta(1/(n*|epsilon|^3)) below the window. We prove these results by defining an order parameter for the transition and establishing its scaling behavior in n both inside and outside the window. Using this order parameter, we prove that the 2-SAT phase transition is continuous with an order parameter critical exponent of 1. We also determine the values of two other critical exponents, showing that the exponents of 2-SAT are identical to those of the random graph.

Umbral presentations for polynomial sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
Using random variables as motivation, this paper presents an exposition of the formalisms developed by Rota and Taylor for the classical umbral calculus. A variety of examples are presented, culminating in several descriptions of sequences of binomial type in terms of umbral polynomials.

Central Limit Theorem for local linear statistics in classical compact groups and related combinatorial identities
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss CLT for the global and local linear statistics of random matrices from classical compact groups. The main part of our proofs are certain combinatorial identities much in the spirit of works by Kac and Spohn.

Infinite wedge and random partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Using techniques from integrable systems, we obtain a number of exact results for random partitions. In particular, we prove a simple formula for correlation functions of what we call the Schur measure on partitions (which is a far reaching generalization of the Plancherel measure, see math.CO/9905032) and also show that these correlations functions are tau-functions for the Toda lattice hierarchy. Also we give a new proof of the formula due to Bloch and the author, see alg-geom/9712009, for the so called n-point functions of the uniform measure on partitions and comment on the local structure of a typical partition.

Random walks and random permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A connection is made between the random turns model of vicious walkers and random permutations indexed by their increasing subsequences. Consequently the scaled distribution of the maximum displacements in a particular asymmeteric version of the model can be determined to be the same as the scaled distribution of the eigenvalues at the soft edge of the GUE. The scaling of the distribution gives the maximum mean displacement $μ$ after $t$ time steps as $μ= (2t)^{1/2}$ with standard deviation proportional to $μ^{1/3}$. The exponent 1/3 is typical of a large class of two-dimensional growth problems.

Discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles and the Plancherel measure
Published in Ann. of Math. (2) 153 (2001), no. 2, 259--296 • View Publication • BIB
We consider discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles which are discrete analogues of the orthogonal polynomial ensembles in random matrix theory. These ensembles occur in certain problems in combinatorial probability and can be thought of as probability measures on partitions. The Meixner ensemble is related to a two-dimensional directed growth model, and the Charlier ensemble is related to the lengths of weakly increasing subsequences in random words. The Krawtchouk ensemble occurs in connection with zig-zag paths in random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, and also in a certain simplified directed first-passage percolation model. We use the Charlier ensemble to investigate the asymptotics of weakly increasing subsequences in random words and to prove a conjecture of Tracy and Widom. As a limit of the Meixner ensemble or the Charlier ensemble we obtain the Plancherel measure on partitions, and using this we prove a conjecture of Baik, Deift and Johansson that under the Plancherel measure, the distribution of the lengths of the first k rows in the partition, appropriately scaled, converges to the asymptotic joint distribution for the k largest eigenvalues of a random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In this problem a certain discrete kernel, which we call the discrete Bessel kernel, plays an important role.

Z-Measures on partitions, Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, and beta=2 random matrix ensembles

We suggest an hierarchy of all the results known so far about the connection of the asymptotics of combinatorial or representation theoretic problems with ``beta=2 ensembles'' arising in the random matrix theory. We show that all such results are, essentially, degenerations of one general situation arising from so-called generalized regular representations of the infinite symmetric group.

The eigenvalue spacing of a random unipotent matrix in its action on lines
Published • View Publication • BIB
The eigenvalue spacing of a uniformly chosen random finite unipotent matrix in its permutation action on lines is studied. We obtain bounds for the mean number of eigenvalues lying in a fixed arc of the unit circle and offer an approach toward other asymptotics. For the case of all unipotent matrices, the proof gives a probabilistic interpretation to identities of Macdonald from symmetric function theory. For the case of upper triangular matrices over a finite field, connections between symmetric function theory and a probabilistic growth algorithm of Borodin emerge..

Combinatorics of free cumulants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive a formula for expressing free cumulants whose entries are products of random variables in terms of the lattice structure of non-crossing partitions. We show the usefulness of that result by giving direct and conceptually simple proofs for a lot of results about $R$-diagonal elements. Our investigations do not assume the trace property for the considered linear functionals.

Algebraic aspects of increasing subsequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a number of results relating partial Cauchy-Littlewood sums, integrals over the compact classical groups, and increasing subsequences of permutations. These include: integral formulae for the distribution of the longest increasing subsequence of a random involution with constrained number of fixed points; new formulae for partial Cauchy-Littlewood sums, as well as new proofs of old formulae; relations of these expressions to orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle; and explicit bases for invariant spaces of the classical groups, together with appropriate generalizations of the straightening algorithm.

The asymptotics of monotone subsequences of involutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We compute the limiting distributions of the lengths of the longest monotone subsequences of random (signed) involutions with or without conditions on the number of fixed points (and negated points) as the sizes of the involutions tend to infinity. The resulting distributions are, depending on the number of fixed points, (1) the Tracy-Widom distributions for the largest eigenvalues of random GOE, GUE, GSE matrices, (2) the normal distribution, or (3) new classes of distributions which interpolate between pairs of the Tracy-Widom distributions. We also consider the second rows of the corresponding Young diagrams. In each case the convergence of moments is also shown. The proof is based on the algebraic work of the authors in \cite{PartI} which establishes a connection between the statistics of random involutions and a family of orthogonal polynomials, and an asymptotic analysis of the orthogonal polynomials which is obtained by extending the Riemann-Hilbert analysis for the orthogonal polynomials by Deift, Johansson and the first author in [BDJ].

Asymptotics of Plancherel measures for symmetric groups
Published in J. Amer. Math. Soc. 13 (2000), no. 3, 481--515. • View Publication • BIB
We consider the asymptotics of the Plancherel measures on partitions of $n$ as $n$ goes to infinity. We prove that the local structure of a Plancherel typical partition (which we identify with a Young diagram) in the middle of the limit shape converges to a determinantal point process with the discrete sine kernel. On the edges of the limit shape, we prove that the joint distribution of suitably scaled 1st, 2nd, and so on rows of a Plancherel typical diagram converges to the corresponding distribution for eigenvalues of random Hermitian matrices (given by the Airy kernel). This proves a conjecture due to Baik, Deift, and Johansson by methods different from the Riemann-Hilbert techniques used in their original papers math.CO/9810105 and math.CO/9901118 and from the combinatorial approach proposed by Okounkov in math.CO/9903176. Our approach is based on an exact determinantal formula for the correlation functions of the poissonized Plancherel measures involving a new kernel on the 1-dimensional lattice. This kernel is expressed in terms of Bessel functions and we obtain it as a degeneration of the hypergeometric kernel from the paper math.RT/9904010 by Borodin and Olshanski. Our asymptotic analysis relies on the classical asymptotic formulas for the Bessel functions and depoissonization techniques.

Sparse Random Matrices and Statistics of Rooted Trees
Published in Corrected and amended version: Adv. Appl. Probab. 33 (2001) 124-140 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the ensemble of N-dimensional random symmetric matrices A that have, in average, p non-zero elements per row. We study the asymptotic behavior of the norm of A in the limit of infinitely increasing N and p. We prove that the value p= log N is the critical one for the norm to be either bounded or not. The arguments are based on the calculus of the tree-type graphs. Asymptotic properties of sparse random matrices essentially depend on the typical degree of a tree vertex that we show to be finite.

On the Distributions of the Lengths of the Longest Monotone Subsequences in Random Words
Published in Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 119 (2001), 350-380 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the distributions of the lengths of the longest weakly increasing and strongly decreasing subsequences in words of length N from an alphabet of k letters. We find Toeplitz determinant representations for the exponential generating functions (on N) of these distribution functions and show that they are expressible in terms of solutions of Painlevé V equations. We show further that in the weakly increasing case the generating function gives the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue in the k x k Laguerre random matrix ensemble and that the distribution itself has, after centering and normalizing, an N -> infinity limit which is equal to the distribution function for the largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of k x k hermitian matrices of trace zero.

Random Matrices and Random Permutations
We prove the conjecture of Baik, Deift, and Johansson which says that with respect to the Plancherel measure on the set of partitions of $n$, the 1st, 2nd, and so on, rows behave, suitably scaled, like the 1st, 2nd, and so on, eigenvalues of a Gaussian random Hermitian matrix as $n$ goes to infinity. Our proof is based on an interplay between maps on surfaces and ramified coverings of the sphere. We also establish a connection of this problem with intersection theory on the moduli spaces of curves.

Combinatorics of geometrically distributed random variables: Inversions and a parameter of Knuth

For words of length $n$, generated by independent geometric random variables, we consider the mean and variance of the number of inversions and of a parameter of Knuth from permutation in situ. In this way, $q$--analogues for these parameters from the usual permutation model are obtained.

We study a certain random groeth model in two dimensions closely related to the one-dimensional totally asymmetric exclusion process. The results show that the shape fluctuations, appropriately scaled, converges in distribution to the Tracy-Widom largest eigenvalue distribution for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble.

Trees and Matchings
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 7(1):R25, 2000 • View Publication • BIB
In this article, Temperley's bijection between spanning trees of the square grid on the one hand, and perfect matchings (also known as dimer coverings) of the square grid on the other, is extended to the setting of general planar directed (and undirected) graphs, where edges carry nonnegative weights that induce a weighting on the set of spanning trees. We show that the weighted, directed spanning trees (often called arborescences) of any planar graph G can be put into a one-to-one weight-preserving correspondence with the perfect matchings of a related planar graph H. One special case of this result is a bijection between perfect matchings of the hexagonal honeycomb lattice and directed spanning trees of a triangular lattice. Another special case gives a correspondence between perfect matchings of the ``square-octagon'' lattice and directed weighted spanning trees on a directed weighted version of the cartesian lattice. In conjunction with results of Kenyon, our main theorem allows us to compute the measures of all cylinder events for random spanning trees on any (directed, weighted) planar graph. Conversely, in cases where the perfect matching model arises from a tree model, Wilson's algorithm allows us to quickly generate random samples of perfect matchings.
