On the expected value of the minimum assignment
Published • View Publication • BIB
The minimum k-assignment of an m by n matrix X is the minimum sum of k entries of X, no two of which belong to the same row or column. If X is generated by choosing each entry independently from the exponential distribution with mean 1, then Coppersmith and Sorkin conjectured that the expected value of its minimum k-assignment is \sum_{i,j \ge 0, i+j<k} 1/((m-i)(n-j)) and they (with Alm) have proven this for k < 5 and in certain cases when k=5 or k=6. They were motivated by the special case of k=m=n, where the expected value was conjectured by Parisi to be \sum_{i=1}^k 1/(i^2). In this paper we describe our efforts to prove the Coppersmith-Sorkin conjecture. We give evidence for the following stronger conjecture, which generalizes theirs. Conjecture. Suppose that r_1,...,r_m and c_1,...,c_n are positive real numbers. Let X be a random m by n matrix in which entry x_{ij} is chosen independently from the exponential distribution with mean 1/(r_ic_j). Then the expected value of the minimum k-assignment of X is \sum_{I,J} (-1)^{k - 1 - |I| - |J|} \binom{m + n - 1 - |I| - |J|}{k - 1 - |I| - |J|}\frac{1}{(\sum_{i \notin I}r_i) (\sum_{j \notin J} c_j)}. Here the sum is over proper subsets I of {1,...,m} and J of {1,...,n} whose cardinalities |I| and |J| satisfy |I|+|J|<k.

Random Words, Toeplitz Determinants and Integrable Systems. II
Published in Physica D 152-153 (2001), 199-224 • View Publication • BIB
This paper, a continuation of math.CO/9909169, connects the analysis of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence of inhomogeneous random words to a Riemann-Hilbert problem and an associated system of integrable PDEs. In particular, we show that the Poissonization of the distribution function of this length can be identified as the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function.

Random matrix theory over finite fields: a survey
Published • View Publication • BIB
First we survey generating function methods for obtaining useful probability estimates about random matrices in the finite classical groups. Then we describe a probabilistic picture of conjugacy classes which is coherent and beautiful. Connections are made with symmetric function theory, Markov chains, potential theory, Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, quivers, and various measures on partitions.

We present a few combinatorial identities which were encountered in our work on the spectral theory of quantum graphs. They establish a new connection between the theory of random matrix ensembles and combinatorics.

Limiting distributions for a polynuclear growth model with external sources
Published • View Publication • BIB
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the limiting distribution functions for a polynuclear growth model with two external sources, which was considered by Prähofer and Spohn. Depending on the strength of the sources, the limiting distribution functions are either the Tracy-Widom functions of random matrix theory, or a new explicit function which has the special property that its mean is zero. Moreover, we obtain transition functions between pairs of the above distribution functions in suitably scaled limits. There are also similar results for a discrete totally asymmetric exclusion process.

On the kernel of tree incidence matrices
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol 3, (2000), Article 00.1.4 • Search Publication
We study the height of the delta peak at 0 in the spectrum of random tree incidence matrices. We show that the average fraction of the spectrum occupied by the eigenvalue 0 in a large random tree is asymptotic to 2x-1 = 0.1342865808195677459999... where x is the unique real root of x = exp(-x). For finite trees, we give a closed form, a generating function, and an asymptotic estimate for the sequence 1,0,3,8,135,1164,21035,.... of the total multiplicity of the eigenvalue 0 in the set of n^{n-2} tree incidence matrices of size n>0.

On the Counting of Colored Tangles
Published in Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications 9 (2000) 1127--1141 • View Publication • BIB
The connection between matrix integrals and links is used to define matrix models which count alternating tangles in which each closed loop is weighted with a factor n, i.e. may be regarded as decorated with n possible colors. For n=2, the corresponding matrix integral is that recently solved in the study of the random lattice six-vertex model. The generating function of alternating 2-color tangles is provided in terms of elliptic functions, expanded to 16-th order (16 crossings) and its asymptotic behavior is given.

Random vicious walks and random matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.

Integrals over classical Groups, Random permutations, Toda and Toeplitz lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Matrix Fourier-like integrals over the classical groups O_+(n), O_-(n), Sp(n) and U(n) are connected with the distribution of the length of the longest increasing sequence in random permutations and random involutions and the spectrum of random matrices. One of the purposes of this paper is to show that all those integrals satisfy the Painlevé V equation with specific initial conditions. In this work, we present both, new results and known ones, in a unified way. Our method consists of inserting one set of time variables t=(t_1,t_2,...) in the integrals for the real compact groups and two sets of times (t,s) for the unitary group. The point is that these new time-dependent integrals satisfy integrable hierarchies: (i) O(n) and Sp(n) correspond to the standard Toda lattice. (ii) U(n) corresponds to the Toeplitz lattice, a very special reduction of the discrete sinh-Gordon equation. Both systems, the standard Toda lattice and the Toeplitz lattice are also reductions of the 2-Toda lattice, thus leading to a natural vertex operator, and so, a natural Virasoro algebra, a subalgebra of which annihilates the tau-functions. Combining these equations leads to the Painlevé V equation for the integrals.

Universal Distributions for Growth Processes in 1+1 Dimensions and Random Matrices
Published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 4882 (2000) • View Publication • BIB
We develop a scaling theory for KPZ growth in one dimension by a detailed study of the polynuclear growth (PNG) model. In particular, we identify three universal distributions for shape fluctuations and their dependence on the macroscopic shape. These distribution functions are computed using the partition function of Gaussian random matrices in a cosine potential.

Matrix Model Combinatorics: Applications to Folding and Coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a detailed study of the combinatorial interpretation of matrix integrals, including the examples of tessellations of arbitrary genera, and loop models on random surfaces. After reviewing their methods of solution, we apply these to the study of various folding problems arising from physics, including: the meander (or polymer folding) problem ``enumeration of all topologically inequivalent closed non-intersecting plane curves intersecting a line through a given number of points" and a fluid membrane folding problem reformulated as that of ``enumerating all vertex-tricolored triangulations of arbitrary genus, with given numbers of vertices of either color".

Descent Functions and Random Young Tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
The expectation of the descent number of a random Young tableau of a fixed shape is given, and concentration around the mean is shown. This result is generalized to the major index and to other descent functions. The proof combines probabilistic arguments together with combinatorial character theory. Connections with Hecke algebras are mentioned.

Meanders: Exact Asymptotics
Published in Nucl.Phys. B570 (2000) 699-712 • View Publication • BIB
We conjecture that meanders are governed by the gravitational version of a c=-4 two-dimensional conformal field theory, allowing for exact predictions for the meander configuration exponent α=\sqrt{29}(\sqrt{29}+\sqrt{5})/12, and the semi-meander exponent {\barα}=1+\sqrt{11}(\sqrt{29}+\sqrt{5})/24. This result follows from an interpretation of meanders as pairs of fully packed loops on a random surface, described by two c=-2 free fields. The above values agree with recent numerical estimates. We generalize these results to a score of meandric numbers with various geometries and arbitrary loop fugacities.

Combinatorics of geometrically distributed random variables: New q-tangent and q-secant numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Up-down permutations are counted by tangent resp. secant numbers. Considering words instead, where the letters are produced by independent geometric distributions, there are several ways of introducing this concept; in the limit they all coincide with the classical version. In this way, we get some new q-tangent and q-secant functions. Some of them also have nice continued fraction expansions; in one particular case, we could not find a proof for it. Divisibility results a la Andrews/Foata/Gessel are also discussed.

Statistical Self-Similarity of One-Dimensional Growth Processes
Published in Physica A 279, 342 (2000) • View Publication • BIB
For one-dimensional growth processes we consider the distribution of the height above a given point of the substrate and study its scale invariance in the limit of large times. We argue that for self-similar growth from a single seed the universal distribution is the Tracy-Widom distribution from the theory of random matrices and that for growth from a flat substrate it is some other, only numerically determined distribution. In particular, for the polynuclear growth model in the droplet geometry the height maps onto the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation, from which the height distribution is identified as the Tracy-Widom distribution.

Affine shuffles, shuffles with cuts, the Whitehouse module, and patience sorting
Published • View Publication • BIB
Type A affine shuffles are compared with riffle shuffles followed by a cut. Although these probability measures on the symmetric group S_n are different, they both satisfy a convolution property. Strong evidence is given that when the underlying parameter $q$ satisfies $gcd(n,q-1)=1$, the induced measures on conjugacy classes of the symmetric group coincide. This gives rise to interesting combinatorics concerning the modular equidistribution by major index of permutations in a given conjugacy class and with a given number of cyclic descents. It is proved that the use of cuts does not speed up the convergence rate of riffle shuffles to randomness. Generating functions for the first pile size in patience sorting from decks with repeated values are derived. This relates to random matrices.

A q-analogue of the path length of binary search trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
A reformulation of the path length of binary search trees is given in terms of permutations, allowing to extend the definition to the instance of words, where the letters are obtained by independent geometric random variables (with parameter q). In this way, expressions for expectation and variance are obtained which in the limit for $q\to1$ are the classical expressions.

Symmetrized random permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Selecting N random points in a unit square corresponds to selecting a random permutation. By putting 5 types of symmetry restrictions on the points, we obtain subsets of permutations : involutions, signed permutations and signed involutions. We are interested in the statistics of the length of the longest up/right path of random points selections in each symmetry type as the number of points increases to infinity. The limiting distribution functions are expressed in terms of Painlevé II equation. Some of them are Tracy-Widom distributions in random matrix theory, while there are two new classes of distribution functions interpolating GOE and GSE, and GUE and GOE^2 Tracy-Widom distribution functions. Also some applications and related topics are discussed.

Conformal invariance of domino tiling
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let U be a multiply-connected region in R^2 with smooth boundary. Let P_epsilon be a polyomino in epsilon Z^2 approximating U as epsilon tends to 0. We show that, for certain boundary conditions on P_epsilon, the height distribution on a random domino tiling (dimer covering) of P_epsilon is conformally invariant in the limit as epsilon tends to 0, in the sense that the distribution of heights of boundary components only depends on the conformal type of U. The mean height and all the moments are explicitly evaluated.

Random Words, Toeplitz Determinants and Integrable Systems. I

It is proved that the limiting distribution of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence in an inhomogeneous random word is related to the distribution function for the eigenvalues of a certain direct sum of Gaussian unitary ensembles subject to an overall constraint that the eigenvalues lie in a hyperplane.
