Diameter and Treewidth in Minor-Closed Graph Families
Published in Algorithmica 27:275-291, 2000 • View Publication • BIB
It is known that any planar graph with diameter D has treewidth O(D), and this fact has been used as the basis for several planar graph algorithms. We investigate the extent to which similar relations hold in other graph families. We show that treewidth is bounded by a function of the diameter in a minor-closed family, if and only if some apex graph does not belong to the family. In particular, the O(D) bound above can be extended to bounded-genus graphs. As a consequence, we extend several approximation algorithms and exact subgraph isomorphism algorithms from planar graphs to other graph families.

Three, four and five-dimensional fullerenes
Published in Southeast Asian Bulletin of Mathematics (1999) 23: 1-10 • Search Publication
We explore some generalizations of fullerenes F_v (simple polyhedra with v vertices and only 5- and 6-gonal faces) seen as (d-1)-dimensional simple manifolds (preferably, spherical or polytopal) with only 5- and 6-gonal 2-faces. First, finite and planar (infinite) 3-fullerenes are described. Three infinite families of spherical 4-fullerenes are presented in Constructions A,B,C. The Construction A gives 4-polytopes by suitable insertion of fullerenes F_{30}(D_{5h}) into glued 120-cells. The Construction B gives 3-spheres by growing dodecahedra and barrels F_{24} around of given fullerene. The Construction C gives 4-fullerenes from special decoration of given 4-fullerene, which add facets F_{20}, F_{24}, F_{26} and F_{28}(T_d) only. Some 5-fullerenes are obtained, by a variation of gluing of two regular tilings {5333} of hyperbolic 4-space or of their suitable quotients.

Some concepts in list coloring
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Mathematics and Combinatorial Computing 41 (2002), 151-160 • Search Publication
In this paper uniquely list colorable graphs are studied. A graph G is called to be uniquely k-list colorable if it admits a k-list assignment from which G has a unique list coloring. The minimum k for which G is not uniquely k-list colorable is called the M-number of G. We show that every triangle-free uniquely vertex colorable graph with chromatic number k+1, is uniquely k-list colorable. A bound for the M-number of graphs is given, and using this bound it is shown that every planar graph has M-number at most 4. Also we introduce list criticality in graphs and characterize all 3-list critical graphs. It is conjectured that every $χ_\ell$-critical graph is $χ'$-critical and the equivalence of this conjecture to the well known list coloring conjecture is shown.

Trees and Matchings
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 7(1):R25, 2000 • View Publication • BIB
In this article, Temperley's bijection between spanning trees of the square grid on the one hand, and perfect matchings (also known as dimer coverings) of the square grid on the other, is extended to the setting of general planar directed (and undirected) graphs, where edges carry nonnegative weights that induce a weighting on the set of spanning trees. We show that the weighted, directed spanning trees (often called arborescences) of any planar graph G can be put into a one-to-one weight-preserving correspondence with the perfect matchings of a related planar graph H. One special case of this result is a bijection between perfect matchings of the hexagonal honeycomb lattice and directed spanning trees of a triangular lattice. Another special case gives a correspondence between perfect matchings of the ``square-octagon'' lattice and directed weighted spanning trees on a directed weighted version of the cartesian lattice. In conjunction with results of Kenyon, our main theorem allows us to compute the measures of all cylinder events for random spanning trees on any (directed, weighted) planar graph. Conversely, in cases where the perfect matching model arises from a tree model, Wilson's algorithm allows us to quickly generate random samples of perfect matchings.

Planar lattice gases with nearest-neighbour exclusion
Published in Ann.Comb.3:191-203,1999 • View Publication • BIB
We discuss the hard-hexagon and hard-square problems, as well as the corresponding problem on the honeycomb lattice. The case when the activity is unity is of interest to combinatorialists, being the problem of counting binary matrices with no two adjacent 1's. For this case we use the powerful corner transfer matrix method to numerically evaluate the partition function per site, density and some near-neighbour correlations to high accuracy. In particular for the square lattice we obtain the partition function per site to 43 decimal places.

Ground State Entropy of Potts Antiferromagnets on Homeomorphic Families of Strip Graphs
Published in Physica A259, 315 (1998) • View Publication • BIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function, and ground-state degeneracy (per site), $W$, for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on a variety of homeomorphic families of planar strip graphs $G = (Ch)_{k_1,k_2,Σ,k,m}$, where $k_1$, $k_2$, $Σ$, and $k$ describe the homeomorphic structure, and $m$ denotes the length of the strip. Several different ways of taking the total number of vertices to infinity, by sending (i) $m \to \infty$ with $k_1$, $k_2$, and $k$ fixed; (ii) $k_1$ and/or $k_2 \to \infty$ with $m$, and $k$ fixed; and (iii) $k \to \infty$ with $m$ and $p=k_1+k_2$ fixed are studied and the respective loci of points ${\cal B}$ where $W$ is nonanalytic in the complex $q$ plane are determined. The ${\cal B}$'s for limit (i) are comprised of arcs which do not enclose regions in the $q$ plane and, for many values of $p$ and $k$, include support for $Re(q) < 0$. The ${\cal B}$ for limits (ii) and (iii) is the unit circle $|q-1|=1$.
Enumeration of m-ary cacti
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 24 (2000), 22-56 • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper is to enumerate various classes of cyclically colored m-gonal plane cacti, called m-ary cacti. This combinatorial problem is motivated by the topological classification of complex polynomials having at most m critical values, studied by Zvonkin and others. We obtain explicit formulae for both labelled and unlabelled m-ary cacti, according to i) the number of polygons, ii) the vertex-color distribution, iii) the vertex-degree distribution of each color. We also enumerate m-ary cacti according to the order of their automorphism group. Using a generalization of Otter's formula, we express the species of m-ary cacti in terms of rooted and of pointed cacti. A variant of the m-dimensional Lagrange inversion is then used to enumerate these structures. The method of Liskovets for the enumeration of unrooted planar maps can also be adapted to m-ary cacti.
