Partition algebras $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ with $2k>n$ and the fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Assume $\mathsf{M}_n$ is the $n$-dimensional permutation module for the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$, and let $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ be its $k$-fold tensor power. The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ maps surjectively onto the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ for all $k, n \in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 1}$ and isomorphically when $n \ge 2k$. We describe the image of the surjection $Φ_{k,n}:\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ explicitly in terms of the orbit basis of $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and show that when $2k > n$ the kernel of $Φ_{k,n}$ is generated by a single essential idempotent $\mathsf{e}_{k,n}$, which is an orbit basis element. We obtain a presentation for $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ by imposing one additional relation, $\mathsf{e}_{k,n} = 0$, to the standard presentation of the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ when $2k > n$. As a consequence, we obtain the fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$. We show under the natural embedding of the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_n(n)$ into $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ for $k \ge n$ that the essential idempotent $\mathsf{e}_{n,n}$ generates the kernel of $Φ_{k,n}$. Therefore, the relation $\mathsf{e}_{n,n} = 0$ can replace $\mathsf{e}_{k,n} = 0$ when $k \ge n$.

Dimensions of irreducible modules for partition algebras and tensor power multiplicities for symmetric and alternating groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ are in Schur-Weyl duality on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$, so there is a surjection $\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{Z}_k(n) := \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}),$ which is an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We prove a dimension formula for the irreducible modules of the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{Z}_k(n)$ in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Via Schur-Weyl duality, these dimensions equal the multiplicities of the irreducible $\mathsf{S}_n$-modules in $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$. Our dimension expressions hold for any $n \geq 1$ and $k\ge0$. Our methods are based on an analog of Frobenius reciprocity that we show holds for the centralizer algebras of arbitrary finite groups and their subgroups acting on a finite-dimensional module. This enables us to generalize the above result to various analogs of the partition algebra including the centralizer algebra for the alternating group acting on $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ and the quasi-partition algebra corresponding to tensor powers of the reflection representation of $\mathsf{S}_n$.

Dyck tilings and the homogeneous Garnir relations for graded Specht modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose $λ$ and $μ$ are integer partitions with $λ\supseteqμ$. Kenyon and Wilson have introduced the notion of a cover-inclusive Dyck tiling of the skew Young diagram $λ\setminusμ$, which has applications in the study of double-dimer models. We examine these tilings in more detail, giving various equivalent conditions and then proving a recurrence which we use to show that the entries of the transition matrix between two bases for a certain permutation module for the symmetric group are given by counting cover-inclusive Dyck tilings. We go on to consider the inverse of this matrix, showing that its entries are determined by what we call cover-expansive Dyck tilings. The fact that these two matrices are mutual inverses allows us to recover the main result of Kenyon and Wilson. We then discuss the connections with recent results of Kim et al, who give, a simple expression for the sum, over all $μ$, of the number of cover-inclusive Dyck tilings of $λ\setminusμ$. Our results provide a new proof of this result. Finally, we show how to use our results to obtain simpler expressions for the homogeneous Garnir relations for the universal Specht modules introduced by Kleshchev, Mathas and Ram for the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras.

Centralizers of the infinite symmetric group
Published • View Publication • BIB
We review and introduce several approaches to the study of centralizer algebras of the infinite symmetric group $S_\infty$. Our study is led by the double commutant relationships between finite symmetric groups and partition algebras; each approach produces a centralizer algebra that is contained in a partition algebra. Our goal is to incorporate invariants of $S_\infty$, which ties our work to the study of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables. We resultantly explore sequence spaces as permutation modules, which yields families of non-unitary representations of $S_\infty$.

Permutation resolutions for Specht modules of Hecke algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
In [Boltje,Hartmann: Permutation resolutions for Specht modules, J. Algebraic Combin. 34 (2011), 141-162], a chain complex was constructed in a combinatorial way which conjecturally is a resolution of the (dual of the) integral Specht module for the symmetric group in terms of permutation modules. In this paper we extend the definition of the chain complex to the integral Iwahori Hecke algebra and prove the same partial exactness results that were proved in the symmetric group case. A complete proof of the exactness conjecture in the symmetric group case was recently given by Santana and Yudin, Adv. in Math. 229 (2012), 2578-2601.

Tilting modules for cyclotomic Schur algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper investigates the tilting modules of the cyclotomic q-Schur algebras, the Young modules of the Ariki-Koike algebras, and the interconnections between them. The main tools used to understand the tilting modules are contragredient duality, and the Specht filtrations and dual Specht filtrations of certain permutation modules. Surprisingly, Weyl filtrations -- which are in general more powerful than Specht filtrations -- play only a secondary role.
