Convex hull lattices point generated
The simplest way to generate a lattice of convex sets is to consider an initial set of points and draw segments, triangles, and any convex hull from it, then intersect them to obtain new points, and so forth. The result is an infinite lattice for most sets, while only a few initial sets of points perform a finite lattice. By giving an adequate notion of the configuration of points, we identify which sets in the plane define a finite convex hull lattice: four regular families and one sporadic configuration. We explore configurations in the space and higher dimensions.
Noncrossing arithmetic
Higher-order notions of Kreweras complementation have appeared in the literature in the works of Krawczyk, Speicher, Mastnak, Nica, Arizmendi, Vargas, and others. While the theory has been developed primarily for specific applications in free probability, it also possesses an elegant, purely combinatorial core that is of independent interest. The present article aims at offering a simple account of various aspects of higher-order Kreweras complementation on the basis of elementary arithmetic, (co)algebraic, categorical and simplicial properties of noncrossing partitions. The main idea is to consider noncrossing partitions as providing an interesting noncommutative analogue of the interplay between the divisibility poset and the multiplicative monoid of positive integers. Just as the divisibility poset can be regarded as the decalage of the multiplicative monoid, we exhibit the lattice of noncrossing partitions as the decalage of a partial monoid structure on noncrossing partitions encoding higher-order Kreweras complements. While our results may be considered familiar, several of the viewpoints can be regarded as novel, offering an efficient approach both conceptually and computationally.

Lattice subsequences of fixed points of Toeplitz substitutions
We define the modulo-$m$ Toeplitz fixed point generated by Toeplitz substitution and study the lattice subsequence of such fixed point. Moreover, we provide a method to check whether one modulo-$m$ Toeplitz fixed point is a lattice subsequence of another.

Wigglyhedra
Published in Math. Z. 310(3), Paper No. 54, 2025 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by categorical representation theory, we define the wiggly complex, whose vertices are arcs wiggling around $n+2$ points on a line, and whose faces are sets of wiggly arcs which are pairwise pointed and non-crossing. The wiggly complex is a $(2n-1)$-dimensional pseudomanifold, whose facets are wiggly pseudotriangulations. We show that wiggly pseudotriangulations are in bijection with wiggly permutations, which are permutations of $[2n]$ avoiding the patterns $(2j-1) \cdots i \cdots (2j)$ for $i < 2j-1$ and $(2j) \cdots k \cdots (2j-1)$ for $k > 2j$. These permutations define the wiggly lattice, an induced sublattice of the weak order. We then prove that the wiggly complex is isomorphic to the boundary complex of the polar of the wigglyhedron, for which we give explicit and simple vertex and facet descriptions. Interestingly, we observe that any Cambrian associahedron is normally equivalent to a well-chosen face of the wigglyhedron. Finally, we recall the correspondence of wiggly arcs with objects in a category, and we develop categorical criteria for a subset of wiggly arcs to form a face of the wiggly complex.
On trilinear and quadrilinear equations associated with the lattice Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy
Published • View Publication • BIB
Introduced in 2012, by Zhang, Zhao, and Nijhoff, the trilinear Boussinesq equation is the natural form of the equation for the $τ$-function of the lattice Boussinesq system. In this paper we study various aspects of this equation: its highly nontrivial derivation from the bilinear lattice AKP equation under dimensional reduction, a quadrilinear dual lattice equation, conservation laws, and periodic reductions leading to higher-dimensional integrable maps and their Laurent property. Furthermore, we consider a higher Gel'fand-Dikii lattice system, its periodic reductions and Laurent property. As a special application, from both a trilinear Boussinesq recurrence as well as a higher Gel'fand-Dikii system of three bilinear recurrences, we establish Somos-like integer sequences.
A lattice framework for generalizing shellable complexes and matroids
We introduce the notion of power lattices that unifies and extends the equicardinal geometric lattices, Cartesian products of subspace lattices, and multiset subset lattices, among several others. The notions of shellability for simplicial complexes, q-complexes, and multicomplexes are then unified and extended to that of complexes in power lattices, which we name as P-complexes. A nontrivial class of shellable P-complexes are obtained via P-complexes of the independent sets of a matroid in power lattice, which we introduce to generalize matroids in Boolean lattices, q-matroids in subspace lattices, and sum-matroids in Cartesian products of subspace lattices. We also prove that shellable P-complexes in a power lattice yield shellable order complexes, extending the celebrated result of shellability of order complexes of (equicardinal) geometric lattices by Björner and also, a recent result on shellability of order complexes of lexicographically shellable q-complexes. Finally, we provide a construction of matroids on the lattice of multiset subsets from weighted graphs. We also consider a variation of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with shellable multicomplexes than the one considered by Herzog and Popescu and proved that these rings are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay.
A simple proof on the number of $(3 \times n)$-Latin rectangles based on a set of $λ$ elements
In 1980, Athreya, Pranesachar and Singhi established the chromatic polynomial of $(3 \times n)$-Latin rectangles whose entries based on a set $\{1, 2, ..., λ\}$ in which $λ\geq n$. Their proof requires Möbius inversion formula and lattice partitions. In this paper, we present a simpler proof by using the idea of mathematical induction and appropriate coloring.

Unimodular Valuations beyond Ehrhart
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e188 • View Publication • BIB
A complete classification of unimodular valuations on the set of lattice polygons with values in the spaces of polynomials and formal power series, respectively, is established. The valuations are classified in terms of their behaviour with respect to dilation using extensions to unbounded polyhedra and basic invariant theory.

Upho lattices I: examples and non-examples of cores
Published • View Publication • BIB
A poset is called upper homogeneous, or "upho," if every principal order filter of the poset is isomorphic to the whole poset. We study (finite type $\mathbb{N}$-graded) upho lattices, with an eye towards their classification. Any upho lattice has associated to it a finite graded lattice called its core, which determines its rank generating function. We investigate which finite graded lattices arise as cores of upho lattices, providing both positive and negative results. On the one hand, we show that many well-studied finite lattices do arise as cores, and we present combinatorial and algebraic constructions of the upho lattices into which they embed. On the other hand, we show there are obstructions which prevent many finite lattices from being cores.

The geometry of conjugation in affine Coxeter groups
We develop new and precise geometric descriptions of the conjugacy class $[x]$ and coconjugation set $\operatorname{C}(x,x') = \{ y \in \overline{W} \mid yxy^{-1} = x' \}$ for all elements $x,x'$ of any affine Coxeter group $\overline{W}$. The centralizer of $x$ in $\overline{W}$ is the special case $\operatorname{C}(x,x)$. The key structure in our description of the conjugacy class $[x]$ is the mod-set ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w) = (w-\operatorname{I})R^\vee$, where~$w$ is the finite part of $x$ and $R^\vee$ is the coroot lattice. The coconjugation set $\operatorname{C}(x,x')$ is then described by ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w')$ together with the fix-set of $w'$, where $w'$ is the finite part of $x'$. For any element $w$ of the associated finite Weyl group $W$, the mod-set of $w$ is contained in the classical move-set ${Mov}(w) = \operatorname{Im}(w - \operatorname{I})$. We prove that the rank of ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w)$ equals the dimension of ${Mov}(w)$, and then further investigate type-by-type the surprisingly subtle structure of the $\mathbb{Z}$-module ${Mod}_\overline{W}(w)$. As corollaries, we determine exactly when ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w) = {Mov}(w) \cap R^\vee$, in which case our closed-form descriptions of conjugacy classes and coconjugation sets are as simple as possible.

Harmonics and graded Ehrhart theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Ehrhart polynomial and Ehrhart series count lattice points in integer dilations of a lattice polytope. We introduce and study a $q$-deformation of the Ehrhart series, based on the notions of harmonic spaces and Macaulay's inverse systems for coordinate rings of finite point configurations. We conjecture that this $q$-Ehrhart series is a rational function, and introduce and study a bigraded algebra whose Hilbert series matches the $q$-Ehrhart series. Defining this algebra requires a new result on Macaulay inverse systems for Minkowski sums of point configurations.

Counting of lattices containing up to $4$ reducible elements and having nullity up to $3$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we count all non-isomorphic lattices on $n$ elements, containing four reducible elements and having nullity three. This work is in respect of Birkhoff's open problem (which is NP-complete) of counting all finite lattices on $n$ elements.
The chromatic number of 4-dimensional lattices
Published in Indag. Math. (N.S.) 36 (2025) 988-1004 • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic number of a lattice in n-dimensional Euclidean space is defined as the chromatic number of its Voronoi graph. The Voronoi graph is the Cayley graph on the lattice having the strict Voronoi vectors as generators. In this paper we determine the chromatic number of all 4-dimensional lattices. To achieve this we use the known classification of 52 parallelohedra in dimension 4. These 52 geometric types yield 16 combinatorial types of relevant Voronoi graphs. We discuss a systematic approach to checking for isomorphism of Cayley graphs of lattices. Lower bounds for the chromatic number are obtained from choosing appropriate small finite induced subgraphs of the Voronoi graphs. Matching upper bounds are derived from periodic colorings. To determine the chromatic numbers of these finite graphs, we employ a SAT solver.

The cyclicity rank of empty lattice simplices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We are interested in algebraic properties of empty lattice simplices $Δ$, that is, $d$-dimensional lattice polytopes containing exactly $d+1$ points of the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The cyclicity rank of $Δ$ is the minimal number of cyclic subgroups that the quotient group of $Δ$ splits into. It is known that up to dimension $d \leq 4$, every empty lattice $d$-simplex is cyclic, meaning that its cyclicity rank is at most $1$. We determine the maximal possible cyclicity rank of an empty lattice $d$-simplex for dimensions $d \leq 8$, and determine the asymptotics of this number up to a logarithmic term.

Tournament score sequences, Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv numbers, and the Lévy-Khintchine method
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a short proof of a recent result of Claesson, Dukes, Franklín and Stefánsson, connecting the number $S_n$ of score sequences and the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv numbers $N_n$ from additive number theory. Our proof utilizes the lattice path representation of score sequences by Erdős and Moser, and remarks by Kleitman added to an article of Moser regarding cyclic shifts of such paths. The connection between $S_n$ and $N_n$ is an instance of the Lévy-Khintchine formula from probability theory. We highlight the utility of such formulas, by giving a short proof of Moser's conjecture that $S_n\sim C4^n/n^{5/2}$, where $C$ is described in terms of $N_n$.

Asymptotics of quantized barycenters of lattice polytopes with applications to algebraic geometry
Published in Math. Z. 309, 49 (2025) • View Publication • BIB
This article addresses a combinatorial problem with applications to algebraic geometry. To a convex lattice polytope $P$ and each of its integer dilations $kP$ one may associate the barycenter of its lattice points. This sequence of $k$-quantized barycenters converge to the (classical) barycenter of the polytope considered as a convex body. A basic question arises: is there a complete asymptotic expansion for this sequence? If so, what are its terms? This article initiates the study of this question. First, we establish the existence of such an expansion as well as determine the first two terms. Second, for Delzant lattice polytopes we use toric algebra to determine all terms using mixed volumes of virtual rooftop polytopes, or alternatively in terms of higher Donaldson--Futaki invariants. Third, for reflexive polytopes we show the quantized barycenters are colinear to first order, and actually colinear in the case of polygons. The proofs use Ehrhart theory, convexity arguments, and toric algebra. As applications we derive the complete asymptotic expansion of the Fujita--Odaka stability thresholds $δ_k$ on arbitrary polarizations on (possibly singular) toric varieties. In fact, we show they are rational functions of $k$ for sufficiently large $k$. This gives the first general result on Tian's stabilization problem for $δ_k$-invariants for (possibly singular) toric Fanos: $δ_k$ stabilize in $k$ if and only if they are all equal to $1$, and when smooth if and only if asymptotically Chow semistable. We also relate the asymptotic expansions to higher Donaldson--Futaki invariants of test configurations motivated by Ehrhart theory, and unify in passing previous results of Donaldson, Ono, Futaki, and Rubinstein--Tian--Zhang.
The Pinnacle Sets of a Graph
We introduce and study the pinnacle sets of a simple graph $G$ with $n$ vertices. Given a bijective vertex labeling $λ\,:\,V(G)\rightarrow [n]$, the label $λ(v)$ of vertex $v$ is a pinnacle of $(G, λ)$ if $λ(v)>λ(w)$ for all vertices $w$ in the neighborhood of $v$. The pinnacle set of $(G, λ)$ contains all the pinnacles of the labeled graph. A subset $S\subseteq[n]$ is a pinnacle set of $G$ if there exists a labeling $λ$ such that $S$ is the pinnacle set of $(G,λ)$. Of interest to us is the question: Which subsets of $[n]$ are the pinnacle sets of $G$? Our main results are as follows. We show that when $G$ is connected, $G$ has a size-$k$ pinnacle set if and only if $G$ has an independent set of the same size. Consequently, determining if $G$ has a size-$k$ pinnacle set and determining if $G$ has a particular subset $S$ as a pinnacle set are NP-complete problems. Nonetheless, we completely identify all the pinnacle sets of complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, cycles and paths. We also present two techniques for deriving new pinnacle sets from old ones that imply a typical graph has many pinnacle sets. Finally, we define a poset on all the size-$k$ pinnacle sets of $G$ and show that it is a join semilattice. If, additionally, the poset has a minimum element, then it is a distributive lattice. We conclude with some open problems for further study.

Propp's benzels and Lai's nearly symmetric hexagons with holes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we present a new version of the second author's factorization theorem for perfect matchings of symmetric graphs. We then use our result to solve four open problems of Propp on the enumeration of trimer tilings on the hexagonal lattice. As another application, we obtain a semi-factorization result for the number of lozenge tilings of a large class of hexagonal regions with holes (obtained by starting with an arbitrary symmetric hexagon with holes, and translating all the holes one unit lattice segment in the same direction). This in turn leads to the solution of two open problems posed by Lai and to an extension of a result due to Fulmek and Krattenthaler, which results in exact enumeration formulas for some new families of hexagonal regions with holes. Our result also allows us to find new, simpler proofs (and in one case, a new, simpler form) of some formulas due to Krattenthaler for the number of perfect matchings of Aztec rectangles with unit holes along a lattice diagonal.
