A definitely periodic chain in the integral Lie ring of partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an integer $n$, we introduce the integral Lie ring of partitions with bounded maximal part, whose elements are in one-to-one correspondence to integer partitions with parts in $\{1,2,\dots, n-1\}$. Starting from an abelian subring, we recursively define a chain of idealizers and we prove that the sequence of ranks of consecutive terms in the chain is definitely periodic. Moreover, we show that its growth depends of the partial sum of the partial sum of the sequence counting the number of partitions. This work generalizes our previous recent work on the same topic, devoted to the modular case where partitions were allowed to have a bounded number of repetitions of parts in a ring of coefficients of positive characteristic.

Divisibility and distribution of $MEX$ related integer partitions of Andrews and Newman
Published in International Journal of Number Theory, Vol. 19 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
Andrews and Newman introduced the minimal excludant or ``$mex$'' function for an integer partition $π$ of a positive integer $n$, $mex(π)$, as the smallest positive integer that is not a part of $π$. They defined $σmex(n)$ to be the sum of $mex(π)$ taken over all partitions $π$ of $n$. We prove infinite families of congruence and multiplicative formulas for $σmex(n)$. By restricting to the part of $π$, Andrews and Newman also introduced $moex(π)$ to be the smallest odd integer that is not a part of $π$ and $σmoex(n)$ to be the sum of $moex(π)$ taken over all partitions $π$ of $n$. In this article, we show that for any sufficiently large $X$, the number of all positive integer $n\leq X$ such that $σmoex(n)$ is an even (or odd) number is at least $\mathcal{O}(\log \log X)$.

On the number of parts in all partitions enumerated by the Rogers-Ramanujan identities
Published • View Publication • BIB
The celebrated Rogers-Ramanujan identities equate the number of integer partitions of $n$ ($n\in\mathbb N_0$) with parts congruent to $\pm 1 \pmod{5}$ (respectively $\pm 2 \pmod{5}$) and the number of partitions of $n$ with super-distinct parts (respectively super-distinct parts greater than $1$). In this paper, we establish companion identities to the Rogers-Ramanujan identities on the number of parts in all partitions of $n$ of the aforementioned types, in the spirit of earlier work by Andrews and Beck on a partition identity of Euler.
A unified treatment of families of partition functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a unified framework of combinatorial descriptions, and the analogous asymptotic growth of the coefficients of two general families of functions related to integer partitions. In particular, we resolve several conjectures and verify several claims that are posted on the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. We perform the asymptotic analysis by systematically applying the Mellin transform, residue analysis, and the saddle point method. The combinatorial descriptions of these families of generalized partition functions involve colorings of Young tableaux, along with their ``divisor diagrams'', denoted with sets of colors whose sizes are controlled by divisor functions.
On integer partitions corresponding to numerical semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Numerical semigroups are cofinite additive submonoids of the natural numbers. In 2011, Keith and Nath illustrated an injection from numerical semigroups to integer partitions. We explore this connection between partitions and numerical semigroups with a focus on classifying the partitions that appear in the image of the injection from numerical semigroups. In particular, we count the number of partitions that correspond to numerical semigroups in terms of genus, Frobenius number, and multiplicity, with some restrictions.

Continued Fractions for partition generating functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive continued fractions for partition generating functions, utilizing both Euler's techniques and Ramanujan's techniques. Although our results are for integer partitions there is scope to extend this work to vector partitions, including for binary and n-ary partitions.
Biases in Non-Unitary Partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, the concept of parity bias in integer partitions has been studied by several authors. We continue this study here, but for non-unitary partitions (namely, partitions with parts greater than $1$). We prove analogous results for these restricted partitions to those that have been obtained by Kim, Kim, and Lovejoy (2020) and Kim and Kim (2021). We also look at inequalities between two classes of partitions studied by Andrews (2019), where the parts are separated by parity (either all odd parts are smaller than all even parts or vice versa).

Extensions of some results of Jovovic and Dhar
We look at extensions of formulas given by Jovovic and recently proved by Dhar on integer partitions where the smallest part occurs at least $m$ times and on integer partitions with fixed differences between the largest and smallest parts where the smallest part occurs at least $k$ times. Our results extend Dhar's results for the $m=2$ and $k=1$ cases to the general cases for arbitrary $m$ and $k$. We also look at analogous results for overpartitions and $\ell$-regular partitions.

A modular idealizer chain and unrefinability of partitions with repeated parts
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently Aragona et al. have introduced a chain of normalizers in a Sylow 2-subgroup of Sym(2^n), starting from an elementary abelian regular subgroup. They have shown that the indices of consecutive groups in the chain depend on the number of partitions into distinct parts and have given a description, by means of rigid commutators, of the first n-2 terms in the chain. Moreover, they proved that the (n-1)-th term of the chain is described by means of rigid commutators corresponding to unrefinable partitions into distinct parts. Although the mentioned chain can be defined in a Sylow p-subgroup of Sym(p^n), for p > 2 computing the chain of normalizers becomes a challenging task, in the absence of a suitable notion of rigid commutators. This problem is addressed here from an alternative point of view. We propose a more general framework for the normalizer chain, defining a chain of idealizers in a Lie ring over Z_m whose elements are represented by integer partitions. We show how the corresponding idealizers are generated by subsets of partitions into at most m-1 parts and we conjecture that the idealizer chain grows as the normalizer chain in the symmetric group. As an evidence of this, we establish a correspondence between the two constructions in the case m=2.

Generating New Partition Identities via a Generalized Continued Fraction Algorithm

Using the slow triangle map (a type of multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithm), we exhibit a method for generating any number of new identities for subsets of integer partitions.
Enumerating numerical sets associated to a numerical semigroup
Published • View Publication • BIB
A numerical set $T$ is a subset of $\mathbb N_0$ that contains $0$ and has finite complement. The atom monoid of $T$ is the set of $x \in \mathbb N_0$ such that $x+T \subseteq T$. Marzuola and Miller introduced the anti-atom problem: how many numerical sets have a given atom monoid? This is equivalent to asking for the number of integer partitions with a given set of hook lengths. We introduce the void poset of a numerical semigroup $S$ and show that numerical sets with atom monoid $S$ are in bijection with certain order ideals of this poset. We use this characterization to answer the anti-atom problem when $S$ has small type.
Toughness of recursively partitionable graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A simple graph $G=(V,E)$ on $n$ vertices is said to be recursively partitionable (RP) if $G \simeq K_1$, or if $G$ is connected and satisfies the following recursive property: for every integer partition $a_1, a_2, \dots, a_k$ of $n$, there is a partition $\{A_1, A_2, \dots, A_k\}$ of $V$ such that each $|A_i|=a_i$, and each induced subgraph $G[A_i]$ is RP ($1\leq i \leq k$). We show that if $S$ is a vertex cut of an RP graph $G$ with $|S|\geq 2$, then $G-S$ has at most $3|S|-1$ components. Moreover, this bound is sharp for $|S|=3$. We present two methods for constructing new RP graphs from old. We use these methods to show that for all positive integers $s$, there exist infinitely many RP graphs with an $s$-vertex cut whose removal leaves $2s+1$ components. Additionally, we prove a simple necessary condition for a graph to have an RP spanning tree, and we characterise a class of minimal 2-connected RP graphs.

Limiting behavior in growth of Bulgarian Solitaire orbits
The Bulgarian Solitaire rule induces a finite dynamical system on the set of integer partitions of $n$. Brandt characterized and counted all cycles in its recurrent set for any given $n$, with orbits parametrized by necklaces of black and white beads. However, the transient behavior within each orbit has been almost completely unknown. The only known case is when $n=\binom{k}{2}$ is a triangular number, in which case there is only one orbit. Eriksson and Jonsson gave an analysis for convergence of the structure as $k$ grows, and to what extent the limit applied to the finite case. In this article, we generalize the convergent structure for orbits of Bulgarian Solitaire system for any $n$. For necklaces of the form $(BW)^k = BWBW\cdots$, we give the precise limit of the generating functions as $k$ grows. For other necklaces, we prove that the generating functions are rational and provide a bound for their denominator and numerator degrees.
On the Limiting Vacillating Tableaux for Integer Sequences
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 15, Issue 3 (2024), pp. 383-400 • View Publication • BIB
A fundamental identity in the representation theory of the partition algeba is $n^k = \sum_λ f^λm_k^λ$ for $n \geq 2k$, where $λ$ ranges over integer partitions of $n$, $f^λ$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$, and $m_k^λ$ is the number of vacillating tableaux of shape $λ$ and length $2k$. Using a combination of RSK insertion and jeu de taquin, Halverson and Lewandowski constructed a bijection $DI_n^k$ that maps each integer sequence in $[n]^k$ to a pair consisting of a standard Young tableau and a vacillating tableau. In this paper, we show that for a given integer sequence $\boldsymbol{i}$, when $n$ is sufficiently large, the vacillating tableaux determined by $DI_n^k(\boldsymbol{i})$ become stable when $n \rightarrow \infty$; the limit is called the limiting vacillating tableau for $\boldsymbol{i}$. We give a characterization of the set of limiting vacillating tableaux and presents explicit formulas that enumerate those vacillating tableaux.

Pattern-avoiding even and odd Grassmannian permutations
Published in Australas. J. Combin. 86 (2023), 187-205 • Search Publication
In this paper, we investigate pattern avoidance of parity restricted (even or odd) Grassmannian permutations for patterns of sizes 3 and 4. We use a combination of direct counting and bijective techniques to provide recurrence relations, closed formulas, and generating functions for their corresponding enumerating sequences. In addition, we establish some connections to Dyck paths, directed multigraphs, weak compositions, and certain integer partitions.

Sprague-Grundy values and complexity for LCTR
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an integer partition of $n$, we consider the impartial combinatorial game LCTR in which moves consist of removing either the left column or top row of its Young diagram. We show that for both normal and misère play, the optimal strategy can consist mostly of mirroring the opponent's moves. We also establish that both LCTR and Downright are domestic as well as returnable, and on the other hand neither tame nor forced. For both games, those structural observations allow for computing the Sprague-Grundy value any position in $O(\log(n))$ time, assuming that the time unit allows for reading an integer, or performing a basic arithmetic operation. This improves on the previously known bound of $O(n)$ due to Ilić (2019). We also cover some other complexity measures of both games, such as state-space complexity, and number of leaves and nodes in the corresponding game tree.

Random partitions under the Plancherel-Hurwitz measure, high genus Hurwitz numbers and maps
Published in Ann. Probab. 52 (4), 1253-1359, (July 2024) • View Publication • BIB
We study the asymptotic behaviour of random integer partitions under a new probability law that we introduce, the Plancherel-Hurwitz measure. This distribution, which has a natural definition in terms of Young tableaux, is a deformation of the classical Plancherel measure which appears naturally in the context of Hurwitz numbers, enumerating certain transposition factorisations in symmetric groups. We study a regime in which the number of factors in the underlying factorisations grows linearly with the order of the group, and the corresponding topological objects, Hurwitz maps, are of high genus. We prove that the limiting behaviour exhibits a new, twofold, phenomenon: the first part becomes very large, while the rest of the partition has the standard Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp limit shape. As a consequence, we obtain asymptotic estimates for unconnected Hurwitz numbers with linear Euler characteristic, which we use to study random Hurwitz maps in this regime. This result can also be interpreted as the return probability of the transposition random walk on the symmetric group after linearly many steps.

On $k$-measures and Durfee squares of partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Andrews, Bhattacharjee and Dastidar introduced the concept of $k$-measure of an integer partition, and proved a surprising identity that the number of partitions of $n$ which have $2$-measure $m$ is equal to the number of partitions of $n$ with a Durfee square of side $m$. The authors asked for a bijective proof of this result and also suggested a further exploration of the properties of the number of partitions of $n$ which have $k$-measure $m$ for $k \geq 3$. In this note, we complete these tasks. That is, we obtain a short combinatorial proof of the result of Andrews, Bhattacharjee and Dastidar, and using this proof, we easily generalize this result for $k$-measures.

Computation of q-Binomial Coefficients with the $P(n,m)$ Integer Partition Function
Using $P(n,m)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ into exactly $m$ parts, which was the subject of an earlier paper, $P(n,m,p)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ into exactly $m$ parts with each part at most $p$, can be computed in $O(n^2)$, and the q-binomial coefficient can be computed in $O(n^3)$. Using the definition of the q-binomial coefficient, some properties of the q-binomial coefficient and $P(n,m,p)$ are derived. The q-multinomial coefficient can be computed as a product of q-binomial coefficients. A formula for $Q(n,m,p)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ into exactly $m$ distinct parts with each part at most $p$, is given. Some formulas for the number of integer partitions with each part between a minimum and a maximum are derived. A computer algebra program is listed implementing these algorithms using the computer algebra program of the earlier paper.
