Let $G$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. A connected and acyclic hypergraph is called a supertree. For $0\leqα<1$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest $H$-eigenvalue of $αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$, where $D(G)$ and $A(G)$ are the diagonal tensor of the degrees and the adjacency tensor of $G$, respectively. In this paper, we determine the unique supertrees with the maximum $α$-spectral radius among all $k$-uniform supertrees with $m$ edges and independence number $β$ for $\lceil\frac{m(k-1)+1}{k}\rceil\leqβ\leq m$, among all $k$-uniform supertrees with given degree sequences, and among all $k$-uniform supertrees with $m$ edges and matching number $μ$ for $1\leqμ\leq\lfloor\frac{m(k-1)+1}{k}\rfloor$, respectively.

Motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture, we prove that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with no independent set of size three contains an $\lceil n/2\rceil$-vertex simple minor $H$ with $$0.98688 \cdot \binom{|V(H)|}{2} - o(n^2)$$ edges.
On the $k$-independence number of graph products

The $k$-independence number of a graph, $α_k(G)$, is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$, or alternatively, the independence number of the $k$-th power graph $G^k$. Although it is known that $α_k(G)=α(G^k)$, this, in general, does not hold for most graph products, and thus the existing bounds for $α$ of graph products cannot be used. In this paper we present sharp upper bounds for the $k$-independence number of several graph products. In particular, we focus on the Cartesian, tensor, strong, and lexicographic products. Some of the bounds previously known in the literature for $k=1$ follow as corollaries of our main results.
Independence number of intersection graphs of axis-parallel segments
We prove that for any triangle-free intersection graph of $n$ axis-parallel segments in the plane, the independence number $α$ of this graph is at least $α\ge n/4 + Ω(\sqrt{n})$. We complement this with a construction of a graph in this class satisfying $α\le n/4 + c \sqrt{n}$ for an absolute constant $c$, which demonstrates the optimality of our result.

We leverage an algorithm of Deming [R.W. Deming, Independence numbers of graphs -- an extension of the Koenig-Egervary theorem, Discrete Math., 27(1979), no. 1, 23--33; MR534950] to decompose a matchable graph into subgraphs with a precise structure: they are either spanning even subdivisions of blossom pairs, spanning even subdivisions of the complete graph $K_4$, or a Kőnig-Egerváry graph. In each case, the subgraphs have perfect matchings; in the first two cases, their independence numbers are one less than their matching numbers, while the independence number of the KE subgraph equals its matching number. This decomposition refines previous results about the independence structure of an arbitrary graph and leads to new results about $α$-critical graphs.
Relating the independence number and the dissociation number

The independence number $α(G)$ and the dissociation number ${\rm diss}(G)$ of a graph $G$ are the largest orders of induced subgraphs of $G$ of maximum degree at most $0$ and at most $1$, respectively. We consider possible improvements of the obvious inequality $2α(G)\geq {\rm diss}(G)$. For connected cubic graphs $G$ distinct from $K_4$, we show $5α(G)\geq 3{\rm diss}(G)$, and describe the rich and interesting structure of the extremal graphs in detail. For bipartite graphs, and, more generally, triangle-free graphs, we also obtain improvements. For subcubic graphs though, the inequality cannot be improved in general, and we characterize all extremal subcubic graphs.
On the Chromatic Number of some generalized Kneser Graphs
We determine the chromatic number of the Kneser graph qΓ_{7,{3,4}} of flags of vectorial type {3, 4} of a rank 7 vector space over the finite field GF(q) for large q and describe the colorings that attain the bound. This result relies heavily, not only on the independence number, but also on the structure of all large independent sets. Furthermore, our proof is more general in the following sense: it provides the chromatic number of the Kneser graphs qΓ_{2d+1,{d,d+1}} of flags of vectorial type {d, d+1} of a rank 2d+1 vector space over GF(q) for large q as long as the large independent sets of the graphs are only the ones that are known.
Independence number of hypergraphs under degree conditions
A well-known result of Ajtai et al. from 1982 states that every $k$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices, with girth at least five, and average degree $t^{k-1}$ contains an independent set of size $c n (\log t)^{1/(k-1)}/t$ for some $c>0$. In this paper we show that an independent set of the same size can be found under weaker conditions allowing certain cycles of length 2, 3 and 4.
Our work is motivated by a problem of Lo and Zhao, who asked for $k\ge 4$, how large of an independent set a $k$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices necessarily has when its maximum $(k-2)$-degree $Δ_{k-2}(H)\le dn$. (The corresponding problem with respect to $(k-1)$-degrees was solved by Kostochka, Mubayi, and Varstraëte [Random Structures & Algorithms 44, 224--239, 2014].) In this paper we show that every $k$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices with $Δ_{k-2}(H)\le dn$ contains an independent set of size $c (\frac nd \log\log \frac nd)^{1/(k-1)}$, and under additional conditions, an independent set of size $c (\frac nd \log \frac nd)^{1/(k-1)}$. The former assertion gives a new upper bound for the $(k-2)$-degree Turán density of complete $k$-graphs.
Efficiently recognizing graphs with equal independence and annihilation numbers

The annihilation number $a(G)$ of a graph $G$ is an efficiently computable upper bound on the independence number $α(G)$ of $G$. Recently, Hiller observed that a characterization of the graphs $G$ with $α(G)=a(G)$ due to Larson and Pepper is false. Since the known efficient algorithm recognizing these graphs was based on this characterization, the complexity of recognizing graphs $G$ with $α(G)=a(G)$ was once again open. We show that these graphs can indeed be recognized efficiently. More generally, we show that recognizing graphs $G$ with $α(G)\geq a(G)-\ell$ is fixed parameter tractable using $\ell$ as parameter.

Given a graph $G$, the adjacency matrix and degree diagonal matrix of $G$ are denoted by $A(G)$ and $D(G)$, respectively. In 2017, Nikiforov \cite{0007} proposed the $A_α$-matrix: $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G),$ where $α\in [0, 1]$. The largest eigenvalue of this novel matrix is called the $A_α$-index of $G$. In this paper, we characterize the graphs with minimum $A_α$-index among $n$-vertex graphs with independence number $i$ for $α\in[0,1)$, where $i=1,\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor,\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil,{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor+1},n-3,n-2,n-1,$ whereas for $i=2$ we consider the same problem for $α\in [0,\frac{3}{4}{]}.$ Furthermore, we determine the unique graph (resp. tree) on $n$ vertices with given independence number having the maximum $A_α$-index with $α\in[0,1)$, whereas for the $n$-vertex bipartite graphs with given independence number, we characterize the unique graph having the maximum $A_α$-index with $α\in[\frac{1}{2},1).$
The generalized reciprocal distance matrix of graphs
Let $G$ be a simple undirected connected graph with the Harary matrix $RD(G)$, which is also called the reciprocal distance matrix of $G$. The reciprocal distance signless Laplacian matrix of $G$ is $RQ(G)=RT(G)+RD(G)$, where $RT(G)$ denotes the diagonal matrix of the vertex reciprocal transmissions of graph $G$. This paper intends to introduce a new matrix $RD_α(G)=αRT(G)+(1-α)RD(G)$, $α\in [0,1]$, to track the gradual change from $RD(G)$ to $RQ(G)$. First, we describe completely the eigenvalues of $RD_α(G)$ of some special graphs. Then we obtain serval basic properties of $RD_α(G)$ including inequalities that involve the spectral radii of the reciprocal distance matrix, reciprocal distance signless Laplacian matrix and $RD_α$-matrix of $G$. We also provide some lower and upper bounds of the spectral radius of $RD_α$-matrix. Finally, we depict the extremal graphs with maximal spectral radius of the $RD_α$-matrix among all connected graphs of fixed order and precise vertex connectivity, edge connectivity, chromatic number and independence number, respectively.
The Hopping Forcing Rule
Zero forcing is a combinatorial game played on graphs that can be used to model the spread of information with repeated applications of a color change rule. In general, a zero forcing parameter is the minimum number of initial blue vertices that are needed to eventually color every vertex blue with a given color change rule. Furthermore, the throttling number minimizes the sum of the number of initial blue vertices and the time taken for all vertices to become blue. In 2013, Barioli et al. added a new rule, called hopping, to existing color change rules in order to demonstrate that the minor monotone floor of various zero forcing parameters is itself, a zero forcing parameter. In this paper, we examine the hopping color change rule independently from the other classic rules. Specifically, we study the hopping forcing number and the hopping throttling number. We investigate the ways in which these numbers are related to various graph theory parameters (such as vertex connectivity and independence number) as well as other zero forcing parameters.
Domination and independence number of large $2$-crossing-critical graphs
After $2$-crossing-critical graphs were characterized in 2016, their most general subfamily, large $3$-connected $2$-crossing-critical graphs, has attracted separate attention. This paper presents sharp upper and lower bounds for their domination and independence number.
Geodetic convexity and Kneser graphs

The {\em Kneser graph} $K(2n+k,n)$, for positive integers $n$ and $k$, is the graph $G=(V,E)$ such that $V=\{S\subseteq\{1,\ldots,2n+k\} : |S|=n\}$ and there is an edge $uv\in E$ whenever $u\cap v=\emptyset$. Kneser graphs have a nice combinatorial structure, and many parameters have been determined for them, such as the diameter, the chromatic number, the independence number, and, recently, the hull number (in the context of $P_3$-convexity). However, the determination of geodetic convexity parameters in Kneser graphs still remained open. In this work, we investigate both the geodetic number and the geodetic hull number of Kneser graphs. We give upper bounds and determine the exact value of these parameters for Kneser graphs of diameter two (which form a nontrivial subfamily). We prove that the geodetic hull number of a Kneser graph of diameter two is two, except for $K(5,2)$, $K(6,2)$, and $K(8,2)$, which have geodetic hull number three. We also contribute to the knowledge on Kneser graphs by presenting a characterization of endpoints of diametral paths in $K(2n+k,n)$, used as a tool for obtaining some of the main results in this work.

Given a graph $G$ and an integer $\ell\ge 2$, we denote by $α_{\ell}(G)$ the maximum size of a $K_{\ell}$-free subset of vertices in $V(G)$. A recent question of Nenadov and Pehova asks for determining the best possible minimum degree conditions forcing clique-factors in $n$-vertex graphs $G$ with $α_{\ell}(G) = o(n)$, which can be seen as a Ramsey--Turán variant of the celebrated Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem. In this paper we find the asymptotical sharp minimum degree threshold for $K_r$-factors in $n$-vertex graphs $G$ with $α_\ell(G)=n^{1-o(1)}$ for all $r\ge \ell\ge 2$.

Sárközy's theorem states that dense sets of integers must contain two elements whose difference is a $k^{th}$ power. Following the polynomial method breakthrough of Croot, Lev, and Pach, Green proved a strong quantitative version of this result for $\mathbb{F}_{q}[T]$. In this paper we provide a lower bound for Sárközy's theorem in function fields by adapting Ruzsa's construction for the analogous problem in $\mathbb{Z}$. We construct a set $A$ of polynomials of degree $<n$ such that $A$ does not contain a $k^{th}$ power difference with $|A|=q^{n-n/2k}$. Additionally, we prove a handful of results concerning the independence number of generalized Paley Graphs, including a generalization of a claim of Ruzsa, which helps with understanding the limit of the method.

We study relations between diameter $D(G)$, domination number $γ(G)$, independence number $α(G)$ and cop number $c(G)$ of a connected graph $G$, showing (i.) $c(G) \leq α(G)-\lfloor \frac{D(G)-3}{2} \rfloor$, and (ii.) $c(G) \leq γ(G) - \frac{D(G)}{3} + O (\sqrt{D(G)})$.
Exact Matching in Graphs of Bounded Independence Number
In the Exact Matching Problem (EM), we are given a graph equipped with a fixed coloring of its edges with two colors (red and blue), as well as a positive integer $k$. The task is then to decide whether the given graph contains a perfect matching exactly $k$ of whose edges have color red. EM generalizes several important algorithmic problems such as perfect matching and restricted minimum weight spanning tree problems. When introducing the problem in 1982, Papadimitriou and Yannakakis conjectured EM to be $\textbf{NP}$-complete. Later however, Mulmuley et al.~presented a randomized polynomial time algorithm for EM, which puts EM in $\textbf{RP}$. Given that to decide whether or not $\textbf{RP}=\textbf{P}$ represents a big open challenge in complexity theory, this makes it unlikely for EM to be $\textbf{NP}$-complete, and in fact indicates the possibility of a deterministic polynomial time algorithm. EM remains one of the few natural combinatorial problems in $\textbf{RP}$ which are not known to be contained in $\textbf{P}$, making it an interesting instance for testing the hypothesis $\textbf{RP}=\textbf{P}$. Despite EM being quite well-known, attempts to devise deterministic polynomial algorithms have remained illusive during the last 40 years and progress has been lacking even for very restrictive classes of input graphs. In this paper we finally push the frontier of positive results forward by proving that EM can be solved in deterministic polynomial time for input graphs of bounded independence number, and for bipartite input graphs of bounded bipartite independence number. This generalizes previous positive results for complete (bipartite) graphs which were the only known results for EM on dense graphs.

We consider the following problem: for a given graph G and two integers k and d, can we apply a fixed graph operation at most k times in order to reduce a given graph parameter $π$ by at least d? We show that this problem is NP-hard when the parameter is the independence number and the graph operation is vertex deletion or edge contraction, even for fixed d=1 and when restricted to chordal graphs. We also give a polynomial time algorithm for bipartite graphs when the operation is edge contraction, the parameter is the independence number and d is fixed. Further, we complete the complexity dichotomy on H-free graphs when the parameter is the clique number and the operation is edge contraction by showing that this problem is NP-hard in ($C_3+P_1$)-free graphs even for fixed d=1. Our results answer several open questions stated in [Diner et al., Theoretical Computer Science, 746, p. 49-72 (2012)].

We disprove the characterisation of graphs with equal independence and annihilation number by Larson and Pepper (2011). Series of counterexamples with arbitrary number of vertices, arbitrary number of components, arbitrary large independence number and arbitrary large difference between the critical and the regular independence number are provided. Furthermore, we point out the error in the proof of the theorem. However, we show that the theorem still holds for bipartite graphs and connected claw-free graphs.
