The Primitive Eulerian polynomial
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 4.1 (2024), Paper No. 16 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the Primitive Eulerian polynomial $P_{\cal A}(z)$ of a central hyperplane arrangement ${\cal A}$. It is a reparametrization of its cocharacteristic polynomial. Previous work of the first author implicitly show that, for simplicial arrangements, $P_{\cal A}(z)$ has nonnegative coefficients. For reflection arrangements of type A and B, the same work interprets the coefficients of $P_{\cal A}(z)$ using the (flag)excedance statistic on (signed) permutations. The main result of this article is to provide an interpretation of the coefficients of $P_{\cal A}(z)$ for all simplicial arrangements only using the geometry and combinatorics of ${\cal A}$. This new interpretation sheds more light to the case of reflection arrangements and, for the first time, gives combinatorial meaning to the coefficients of the Primitive Eulerian polynomial of the reflection arrangement of type D. In type B, we find a connection between the Primitive Eulerian polynomial and the $1/2$-Eulerian polynomial of Savage and Viswanathan (2012). We present some real-rootedness results and conjectures for $P_{\cal A}(z)$.

Addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials and $B$-sequences of hyperplane arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove the addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials, which have two important specializations. Namely, one is to the characteristic polynomials of hyperplane arangements, and the other to the Poincarè polynomials of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties. One of the main tools to show them is the free surjection theorem which confirms the right exactness of several important exact sequences among logarithmic modules. Moreover, we introduce a generalized polynomial $B$-theory to the higher order logarithmic modules, whose origin was due to Terao.
The Best Ways to Slice a Polytope
Published in Mathematics of Computation, 94 (352), 1003-1042 (2025) • View Publication • BIB
We study the structure of the set of all possible affine hyperplane sections of a convex polytope. We present two different cell decompositions of this set, induced by hyperplane arrangements. Using our decomposition, we bound the number of possible combinatorial types of sections and craft algorithms that compute optimal sections of the polytope according to various combinatorial and metric criteria, including sections that maximize the number of $k$-dimensional faces, maximize the volume, and maximize the integral of a polynomial. Our optimization algorithms run in polynomial time in fixed dimension, but the same problems show hardness otherwise. Our tools can be extended to intersection with halfspaces and projections onto hyperplanes. Finally, we present several experiments illustrating our theorems and algorithms on famous polytopes.
Inductive and divisional posets
Published in J. London Math. Soc., 109 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
We call a poset factorable if its characteristic polynomial has all positive integer roots. Inspired by inductive and divisional freeness of a central hyperplane arrangement, we introduce and study the notion of inductive posets and their superclass of divisional posets. It then motivates us to define the so-called inductive and divisional abelian (Lie group) arrangements, whose posets of layers serve as the main examples of our posets. Our first main result is that every divisional poset is factorable. Our second main result shows that the class of inductive posets contains strictly supersolvable posets, the notion recently introduced due to Bibby and Delucchi (2022). This result can be regarded as an extension of a classical result due to Jambu and Terao (1984), which asserts that every supersolvable hyperplane arrangement is inductively free. Our third main result is an application to toric arrangements, which states that the toric arrangement defined by an arbitrary ideal of a root system of type $A$, $B$ or $C$ with respect to the root lattice is inductive.
Shi arrangements and low elements in Coxeter groups
Published in Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society Volume 129, Issue 2 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
Given an arbitrary Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and a nonnegative integer $m$, the $m$-Shi arrangement of $(W,S)$ is a subarrangement of the Coxeter hyperplane arrangement of $(W,S)$. The classical Shi arrangement ($m=0$) was introduced in the case of affine Weyl groups by Shi to study Kazhdan-Lusztig cells for $W$. As two key results, Shi showed that each region of the Shi arrangement contains exactly one element of minimal length in $W$ and that the union of their inverses form a convex subset of the Coxeter complex. The set of $m$-low elements in $W$ were introduced to study the word problem of the corresponding Artin-Tits (braid) group and they turn out to produce automata to study the combinatorics of reduced words in $W$. In this article, we generalize and extend Shi's results to any Coxeter system for any $m$: (1) the set of minimal length elements of the regions in a $m$-Shi arrangement is precisely the set of $m$-low elements, settling a conjecture of the first and third authors in this case; (2) the union of the inverses of the ($0$-)low elements form a convex subset in the Coxeter complex, settling a conjecture by the third author, Nadeau and Williams.

Intersection Bodies of Polytopes: Translations and Convexity
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 60, 127-143 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
We continue the study of intersection bodies of polytopes, focusing on the behavior of $IP$ under translations of $P$. We introduce an affine hyperplane arrangement and show that the polynomials describing the boundary of $I(P+t)$ can be extended to polynomials in variables $t\in \mathbb{R}^d$ within each region of the arrangement. In dimension $2$, we give a full characterization of those polygons such that their intersection body is convex. We give a partial characterization for general dimensions.
The Poincaré-extended ab-index
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by a conjecture concerning Igusa local zeta functions for intersection posets of hyperplane arrangements, we introduce and study the Poincaré-extended ab-index, which generalizes both the ab-index and the Poincaré polynomial. For posets admitting R-labelings, we give a combinatorial description of the coefficients of the extended ab-index, proving their nonnegativity. In the case of intersection posets of hyperplane arrangements, we prove the above conjecture of the second author and Voll as well as another conjecture of the second author and Kühne. We also define the pullback ab-index generalizing the cd-index of face posets for oriented matroids. Our results recover, generalize and unify results from Billera-Ehrenborg-Readdy, Bergeron-Mykytiuk-Sottile-van Willigenburg, Saliola-Thomas, and Ehrenborg. This connection allows us to translate our results into the language of quasisymmetric functions, and-in the special case of symmetric functions-make a conjecture about Schur positivity. A proof of this conjecture now appears an appendix by Ricky Ini Liu.

Intersection theory of polymatroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Polymatroids are combinatorial abstractions of subspace arrangements in the same way that matroids are combinatorial abstractions of hyperplane arrangements. By introducing augmented Chow rings of polymatroids, modeled after augmented wonderful varieties of subspace arrangements, we generalize several algebro-geometric techniques developed in recent years to study matroids. We show that intersection numbers in the augmented Chow ring of a polymatroid are determined by a matching property known as the Hall--Rado condition, which is new even in the case of matroids.

Braid arrangement bimonoids and the toric variety of the permutohedron
We show that the toric variety of the permutohedron (=permutohedral space) has the structure of a cocommutative bimonoid in species, with multiplication/comultiplication given by embedding/projecting-onto boundary divisors. In terms of Losev-Manin's description of permutohedral space as a moduli space, multiplication is concatenation of strings of Riemann spheres and comultiplication is forgetting marked points. In this way, the bimonoid structure is an analog of the cyclic operad structure on the moduli space of genus zero marked curves. Covariant/contravariant data on permutohedral space is endowed with the structure of cocommutative/commutative bimonoids by pushing-forward/pulling-back data along the (co)multiplication. Many well-known combinatorial objects index data on permutohedral space. Moreover, combinatorial objects often have the structure of bimonoids, with multiplication/comultiplication given by merging/restricting objects in some way. We prove that the bimonoid structure enjoyed by these indexing combinatorial objects coincides with that induced by the bimonoid structure of permutohedral space. Thus, permutohedral space may be viewed as a fundamental underlying object which geometrically interprets many combinatorial Hopf algebras. Aguiar-Mahajan have shown that classical combinatorial Hopf theory is based on the braid hyperplane arrangement in a crucial way. This paper aims to similarly establish permutohedral space as a central object, providing an even more unified perspective. The main motivation for this work concerns Feynman amplitudes in the Schwinger parametrization, which become integrals over permutohedral space if one blows-up everything in the resolution of singularities. Then the Hopf algebra structure of Feynman graphs, first appearing in the work of Connes-Kreimer, coincides with that induced by the bimonoid structure of permutohedral space.

On torsion freeness for the decomposable Orlik-Solomon algebra
We prove the torsion freeness of the decomposable Orlik--Solomon algebra of a simple matroid on ground set $[n]$. In the class of hypersolvable \& non-supersolvable complex hyperplane arrangements, the torsion freeness, in a certain degree, of this combinatorially defined object, associated to the intersection lattice of the arrangement, impacts on the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group of the complement of the arrangement.

Shard theory for $g$-fans
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a finite dimensional algebra $A$, the notion of $g$-fan $Σ(A)$ is defined from two-term silting complexes of $A$ in the real Grothendieck group $K_0(\mathsf{proj} A)_{\mathbb{R}}$. In this paper, we discuss the theory of shards to $Σ(A)$, which was originally defined for a hyperplane arrangement. We establish a correspondence between the set of join-irreducible elements of the poset of torsion classes of $\mathrm{mod} A$ and the set of shards of $Σ(A)$ for $g$-finite algebra $A$. Moreover, we show that the semistable region of a brick of $\mathrm{mod} A$ is exactly given by a shard. We also give a poset isomorphism of shard intersections and wide subcategories of $\mathrm{mod} A$.

The signed Varchenko Determinant for Complexes of Oriented Matroids
We generalize the (signed) Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement to complexes of oriented matroids and show that its determinant has a nice factorization. This extends previous results on hyperplane arrangements and oriented matroids.

Modular flats of oriented matroids and poset quasi-fibrations
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. Ser. B 11 (2024), 306-328 • View Publication • BIB
We study the combinatorics of modular flats of oriented matroids and the topological consequences for their Salvetti complexes. We show that the natural map to the localized Salvetti complex at a modular flat of corank one is what we call a poset quasi-fibration -- a notion derived from Quillen's fundamental Theorem B from algebraic $K$-theory. As a direct consequence, the Salvetti complex of an oriented matroid whose geometric lattice is supersolvable is a $K(π,1)$-space -- a generalization of the classical result for supersolvable hyperplane arrangements due to Falk, Randell and Terao. Furthermore, the fundamental group of the Salvetti complex of a supersolvable oriented matroid is an iterated semidirect product of finitely generated free groups -- analogous to the realizable case. Our main tools are discrete Morse theory, the shellability of certain subcomplexes of the covector complex of an oriented matroid, a nice combinatorial decomposition of poset fibers of the localization map, and an isomorphism of covector posets associated to modular elements. We provide a simple construction of supersolvable oriented matroids. This gives many non-realizable supersolvable oriented matroids and by our main result aspherical CW-complexes.
Repetitions of Pak-Stanley Labels in $G$-Shi Arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a simple graph $G$, one can define a hyperplane arrangement called the $G$-Shi arrangement. The Pak-Stanley algorithm labels the regions of this arrangement with $G_\bullet$-parking functions. When $G$ is a complete graph, we recover the Shi arrangement, and the Pak-Stanley labels give a bijection with ordinary parking functions. However, for proper subgraphs $G \subset K_n$, while the Pak-Stanley labels still include every $G_{\bullet}$-parking function, some appear more than once. These repetitions of Pak-Stanley labels are a topic of interest in the study of $G$-Shi arrangements and $G_{\bullet}$-parking functions. Furthermore, $G_{\bullet}$-parking functions are connected to many other combinatorial objects (for example, superstable configurations in chip-firing). In studying these repetitions, we can draw on existing results about these objects such as Dhar's Burning Algorithm. Conversely, our results have implications for the study of these objects as well. The key insight of our work is the introduction of a combinatorial model called the Three Rows Game. Analyzing the histories of this game and how they induce identical outcomes lets us characterize the multiplicities of the Pak-Stanley labels. Using this model, we develop a classification theorem for the multiplicities of the Pak-Stanley labels of the regions in the $P_n$-Shi arrangement, where $P_n$ is the path graph on $n$ vertices. Then, we generalize the Three Rows Game into the $T$-Three Rows Game. This allows us to study the multiplicities of the Pak-Stanley labels of the regions in $T$-Shi arrangements, where $T$ is any tree. Finally, we discuss the possibilities and difficulties in applying our method to arbitrary graphs. In particular, we analyze multiplicities in the case when $G$ is a cycle graph, and prove a uniqueness result for maximal $G_{\bullet}$-parking functions for all graphs using the Three Rows Game.

$K$-rings of wonderful varieties and matroids
Published in Adv. Math. 441 (2024), Paper No. 109554 • View Publication • BIB
We study the $K$-ring of the wonderful variety of a hyperplane arrangement and give a combinatorial presentation that depends only on the underlying matroid. We use this combinatorial presentation to define the $K$-ring of an arbitrary loopless matroid. We construct an exceptional isomorphism, with integer coefficients, to the Chow ring of the matroid that satisfies a Hirzebruch--Riemann--Roch-type formula, generalizing a recent construction of Berget, Eur, Spink, and Tseng for the permutohedral variety (the wonderful variety of a Boolean arrangement). As an application, we give combinatorial formulas for Euler characteristics of arbitrary line bundles on wonderful varieties. We give analogous constructions and results for augmented wonderful varieties, and for Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen moduli spaces of stable rational curves with marked points.

Inductive Freeness of Ziegler's Canonical Multiderivations for Restrictions of Reflection Arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal A$ be a free hyperplane arrangement. In 1989, Ziegler showed that the restriction $\mathcal A"$ of $\mathcal A$ to any hyperplane endowed with the natural multiplicity $κ$ is then a free multiarrangement. In 2024, the first two authors proved an analogue of Ziegler's theorem for the stronger notion of inductive freeness: if $\mathcal A$ is inductively free, then so is the free multiarrangement $(\mathcal A'',κ)$. In 2018, all reflection arrangements which admit inductively free Ziegler restrictions were classified by the first two authors. The aim of this paper is an extension of this classification to all restrictions of reflection arrangements utilizing the aforementioned fundamental result from the 2024 paper of the first two authors.

An Ehrhart Theory For Tautological Intersection Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discover that tautological intersection numbers on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g, n}$, the moduli space of stable genus $g$ curves with $n$ marked points, are evaluations of Ehrhart polynomials of partial polytopal complexes. In order to prove this, we realize the Virasoro constraints for tautological intersection numbers as a recursion for integer-valued polynomials. Then we apply a theorem of Breuer that classifies Ehrhart polynomials of partial polytopal complexes by the nonnegativity of their $f^*$-vector. In dimensions 1 and 2, we show that the polytopal complexes that arise are \emph{inside-out polytopes} i.e. polytopes that are dissected by a hyperplane arrangement.

The Generalized Cluster Complex: Refined Enumeration of Faces and Related Parking Spaces
Published in SIGMA 19 (2023), 069, 40 pages • View Publication • BIB
The generalized cluster complex was introduced by Fomin and Reading, as a natural extension of the Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster complex coming from finite type cluster algebras. In this work, to each face of this complex we associate a parabolic conjugacy class of the underlying finite Coxeter group. We show that the refined enumeration of faces (respectively, positive faces) according to this data gives an explicit formula in terms of the corresponding characteristic polynomial (equivalently, in terms of Orlik-Solomon exponents). This characteristic polynomial originally comes from the theory of hyperplane arrangements, but it is conveniently defined via the parabolic Burnside ring. This makes a connection with the theory of parking spaces: our results eventually rely on some enumeration of chains of noncrossing partitions that were obtained in this context. The precise relations between the formulas counting faces and the one counting chains of noncrossing partitions are combinatorial reciprocities, generalizing the one between Narayana and Kirkman numbers.

Matroidal Cayley-Bacharach and independence/dependence of geometric properties of matroids
We consider the relationship between a matroidal analogue of the degree $a$ Cayley-Bacharach property (finite sets of points failing to impose independent conditions on degree $a$ hypersurfaces) and geometric properties of matroids. If the matroid polytopes in question are nestohedra, we show that the minimal degree matroidal Cayley-Bacharach property denoted $MCB(a)$ is determined by the structure of the building sets used to construct them. This analysis also applies for other degrees $a$. Also, it does not seem to affect the combinatorial equivalence class of the matroid polytope. However, there are close connections to minimal nontrivial degrees $a$ and the geometry of the matroids in question for paving matroids (which are conjecturally generic among matroids of a given rank) and matroids constructed out of supersolvable hyperplane arrangements. The case of paving matroids is still related to with properties of building sets since it is closely connected to (Hilbert series of) Chow rings of matroids, which are combinatorial models of the cohomology of wonderful compactifications. Finally, our analysis of supersolvable line and hyperplane arrangements give a family of matroids which are natrually related to independence conditions imposed by points one plane curves or can be analyzed recursively.

Geometric aspects of the Jacobian of a hyperplane arrangement
Published • View Publication • BIB
An embedding of the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,3}$ in $\mathbb{P}^2$ gives rise to both a line arrangement and a bar-and-joint framework. For a generic placement of the six vertices, the graded Betti numbers of the logarithmic module of derivations of the line arrangement are constant, but an example due to Ziegler shows that the graded Betti numbers are different when the points lie on a conic. Similarly, in rigidity theory a generic embedding of $K_{3,3}$ in the plane is an infinitesimally rigid bar-and-joint framework, but the framework is infinitesimally flexible when the points lie on a conic. In this paper we develop the theory of weak perspective representations of hyperplane arrangements to formalize and generalize the striking connection between hyperplane arrangements and rigidity theory that this example suggests. In particular, we seek to understand how the interplay of combinatorics and geometry influence algebraic structures associated to an arrangement, such as the saturation of the Jacobian ideal of the arrangement. We make connections between examples and constructions from rigidity theory and interesting phenomena in the study of hyperplane arrangements.
