We compute the von Neumann dimensions of the kernels of adjacency operators on free lamplighter groups and show that they are irrational, thus providing an elementary constructive answer to a question of Atiyah.

Simple rectilinear polygons (i.e. rectilinear polygons without holes or cutpoints) can be regarded as finite rectangular cell complexes coordinatized by two finite dendrons. The intrinsic $l_1$-metric is thus inherited from the product of the two finite dendrons via an isometric embedding. The rectangular cell complexes that share this same embedding property are called ramified rectilinear polygons. The links of vertices in these cell complexes may be arbitrary bipartite graphs, in contrast to simple rectilinear polygons where the links of points are either 4-cycles or paths of length at most 3. Ramified rectilinear polygons are particular instances of rectangular complexes obtained from cube-free median graphs, or equivalently simply connected rectangular complexes with triangle-free links. The underlying graphs of finite ramified rectilinear polygons can be recognized among graphs in linear time by a Lexicographic Breadth-First-Search. Whereas the symmetry of a simple rectilinear polygon is very restricted (with automorphism group being a subgroup of the dihedral group $D_4$), ramified rectilinear polygons are universal: every finite group is the automorphism group of some ramified rectilinear polygon.

In 2003, Haglund's {\sf bounce} statistic gave the first combinatorial interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers and the Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we propose a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of the affine Weyl group of type $A$. In particular, we define two statistics on affine permutations; one in terms of the Shi hyperplane arrangement, and one in terms of a new arrangement - which we call the Ish arrangement. We prove that our statistics are equivalent to the {\sf area'} and {\sf bounce} statistics of Haglund and Loehr. In this setting, we observe that {\sf bounce} is naturally expressed as a statistic on the root lattice. We extend our statistics in two directions: to "extended" Shi arrangements and to the bounded chambers of these arrangements. This leads to a (conjectural) combinatorial interpretation for all integral powers of the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator applied to the elementary symmetric functions.

Fibonacci numbers and positive braids
The paper contains enumerative combinatorics for positive braids, square free braids, and simple braids, emphasizing connections with classical Fibonacci sequence. The simple subgraph of the Cayley graph of the braid group is analyzed in the final part.

The normalizer $N_W(W_J)$ of a standard parabolic subgroup $W_J$ of a finite Coxeter group $W$ splits over the parabolic subgroup with complement $N_J$ consisting of certain minimal length coset representatives of $W_J$ in $W$. In this note we show that (with the exception of a small number of cases arising from a situation in Coxeter groups of type $D_n$) the centralizer $C_W(w)$ of an element $w \in W$ is in a similar way a semidirect product of the centralizer of $w$ in a suitable small parabolic subgroup $W_J$ with complement isomorphic to the normalizer complement $N_J$.

Combining Stein's method with heat kernel techniques, we show that the trace of the jth power of an element of U(n,C), USp(n,C) or SO(n,R) has a normal limit with error term of order j/n. In contrast to previous works, here j may be growing with n. The technique should prove useful in the study of the value distribution of approximate eigenfunctions of Laplacians.

We define the notion of a climbing element in a finite real reflection group relative to a total order on the reflection set and we characterise these elements in the case where the total order arises from a bipartite Coxeter element.

We show that pairs of generators for the family Sz(q) of Suzuki groups may be selected so that the corresponding Cayley graphs are expanders. By combining this with several deep works of Kassabov, Lubotzky and Nikolov, this establishes that the family of all non-abelian finite simple groups can be made into expanders in a uniform fashion.
The character of topological groups, via bounded systems, Pontryagin--van Kampen duality and pcf theory

The Birkhoff--Kakutani Theorem asserts that a topological group is metrizable if and only if it has countable character. We develop and apply tools for the estimation of the character for a wide class of nonmetrizable topological groups.
We consider abelian groups whose topology is determined by a countable cofinal family of compact sets. These are the closed subgroups of Pontryagin--van Kampen duals of \emph{metrizable} abelian groups, or equivalently, complete abelian groups whose dual is metrizable. By investigating these connections, we show that also in these cases, the character can be estimated, and that it is determined by the weights of the \emph{compact} subsets of the group, or of quotients of the group by compact subgroups. It follows, for example, that the density and the local density of an abelian metrizable group determine the character of its dual group. Our main result applies to the more general case of closed subgroups of Pontryagin--van Kampen duals of abelian Čech-complete groups.
In the special case of free abelian topological groups, our results extend a number of results of Nickolas and Tkachenko, which were proved using combinatorial methods.
In order to obtain concrete estimations, we establish a natural bridge between the studied concepts and pcf theory, that allows the direct application of several major results from that theory. We include an introduction to these results and their use.

We study zonal characters which are defined as suitably normalized coefficients in the expansion of zonal polynomials in terms of power-sum symmetric functions. We show that the zonal characters, just like the characters of the symmetric groups, admit a nice combinatorial description in terms of Stanley's multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams. We also study the analogue of Kerov polynomials, namely we express the zonal characters as polynomials in free cumulants and we give an explicit combinatorial interpretation of their coefficients. In this way, we prove two recent conjectures of Lassalle for Jack polynomials in the special case of zonal polynomials.

A factorization of a permutation into transpositions is called "primitive" if its factors are weakly ordered. We discuss the problem of enumerating primitive factorizations of permutations, and its place in the hierarchy of previously studied factorization problems. Several formulas enumerating minimal primitive and possibly non-minimal primitive factorizations are presented, and interesting connections with Jucys-Murphy elements, symmetric group characters, and matrix models are described.

We prove that the sizes of the maximal dissociated subsets of a given finite subset of an abelian group differ by a logarithmic factor at most. On the other hand, we show that the set $\{0,1\}^n\seq\Z^n$ possesses a dissociated subset of size $\Ome(n\log n)$; since the standard basis of $\Z^n$ is a maximal dissociated subset of $\{0,1\}^n$ of size $n$, the result just mentioned is essentially sharp.
Double pants decompositions of 2-surfaces

We consider a union of two pants decompositions of the same orientable 2-dimensional surface of any genus g. Each pants decomposition corresponds to some handlebody bounded by this surface, so two pants decompositions correspond to a Heegaard splitting of a 3-manifold. We introduce a groupoid FT acting on double pants decompositions. This groupoid is generated by two simple transformations (called flips and handle twists), each transformation affecting only one curve of the double pants decomposition. We prove that FT acts transitively on all double pants decompositions corresponding to Heegaard splittings of a 3-dimensional sphere. As a corollary, the mapping class group is contained in FT.

We study equations in groups G with unique m-th roots for each positive integer m. A word equation in two letters is an expression of the form w(X,A) = B, where w is a finite word in the alphabet {X,A}. We think of A,B in G as fixed coefficients, and X in G as the unknown. Certain word equations, such as XAXAX=B, have solutions in terms of radicals, while others such as XXAX = B do not. We obtain the first known infinite families of word equations not solvable by radicals, and conjecture a complete classification. To a word w we associate a polynomial P_w in Z[x,y] in two commuting variables, which factors whenever w is a composition of smaller words. We prove that if P_w(x^2,y^2) has an absolutely irreducible factor in Z[x,y], then the equation w(X,A)=B is not solvable in terms of radicals.
Reconstructible graphs, simplicial flag complexes of homology manifolds and associated right-angled Coxeter groups
In this paper, we investigate a relation between finite graphs, simplicial flag complexes and right-angled Coxeter groups, and we provide a class of reconstructible finite graphs. We show that if $Γ$ is a finite graph which is the 1-skeleton of some simplicial flag complex $L$ which is a homology manifold of dimension $n \ge 1$, then the graph $Γ$ is reconstructible.

Let $u\in\mathrm{End}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ be nilpotent. The variety of $u$-stable complete flags is called the Springer fiber over $u$. Its irreducible components are parameterized by a set of standard Young tableaux. The Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) components of Springer fibers correspond to the Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) elements of the symmetric group, through Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Every Richardson component is isomorphic to a product of standard flag varieties. On the contrary, the Bala-Carter components are very susceptible to be singular. First, we characterize the singular Bala-Carter components in terms of two minimal forbidden configurations. Next, we introduce two new families of components, wider than the families of Bala-Carter components and Richardson components, and both in duality via the tableau transposition. The components in the first family are characterized by the fact that they have a dense orbit of special type under the action of the stabilizer of $u$, whereas all components in the second family are iterated fiber bundles over projective spaces.
Jucys-Murphy Elements and a Combinatorial Proof of an Identity of S. Kerov
Consider the elements of the group algebra CS_{n} given by R_{j}=Sigma_{i=1}^{j-1}(ij), for 2<=j<=n. Jucys [3 - 5] and Murphy[7] showed that these elements act diagonally on elements of S_{n} and gave explicit formulas for the diagonal entries. As requested by the late S. Kerov, we give a combinatorial proof of this work in case j=n and present several similar results which arise from these combinatorial methods.
Embedding types and canonical affine maps between Bruhat-Tits buildings of classical groups (Thesis)
P. Broussous and S. Stevens studied maps between enlarged Bruhat-Tits buildings to construct types for p-adic unitary groups. They needed maps which respect the Moy-Prasad filtrations. That property is called (CLF), i.e. compatibility with the Lie algebra filtrations. In the first part of this thesis we generalise their results on such maps to the Quaternion-algebra case. Let k0 be a p-adic field of residue characteristic not two. We consider a semisimple k0-rational Lie algebra element beta of a unitary group G:=U(h) defined over k0 with a signed hermitian form h. Let H be the centraliser of beta in G. We prove the existence of an affine H(k0)-equivariant CLF-map j from the enlarged Bruhat-Tits building B^1(H,k0) to B^1(G,k0). As conjectured by Broussous the CLF-property determines j, if none of the factors of H is k0-isomorphic to the isotropic orthogonal group of k0-rank one and all factors are unitary groups. Under the weaker assumption that the affine CLF-map j is only equivariant under the center of H^0(k0) it is uniquely determined up to a translation of B^1(H,k0). The second part is devoted to the decoding of embedding types by the geometry of a CLF-map. Embedding types have been studied by Broussous and M. Grabitz. We consider a division algebra D of finite index with a p-adic center F. The construction of simple types for GLn(D) in the Budhnell-Kutzko framework required an investigation of strata which had to fulfil a rigidity property. Giving a stratum especially means to fix a pair (E,a) consisting of a field extension E|F in Mn(D) and a hereditary order a which is stable under conjugation by E^x, in other words we fix an embedding of E^x into the normalizer of a. Broussous and Grabitz classified these pairs with invariants. We describe and prove a way to decode these invariants using the geometry of a CLF-map.
Optimal Inverse Littlewood-Offord theorems

Let eta_i be iid Bernoulli random variables, taking values -1,1 with probability 1/2. Given a multiset V of n integers v_1,..., v_n, we define the concentration probability as rho(V) := sup_{x} Pr(v_1 eta_1+...+ v_n eta_n=x). A classical result of Littlewood-Offord and Erdos from the 1940s asserts that if the v_i are non-zero, then rho(V) is O(n^{-1/2}). Since then, many researchers obtained improved bounds by assuming various extra restrictions on V. About 5 years ago, motivated by problems concerning random matrices, Tao and Vu introduced the Inverse Littlewood-Offord problem. In the inverse problem, one would like to give a characterization of the set V, given that rho(V) is relatively large. In this paper, we introduce a new method to attack the inverse problem. As an application, we strengthen a previous result of Tao and Vu, obtaining an optimal characterization for V. This immediately implies several classical theorems, such as those of Sarkozy-Szemeredi and Halasz. The method also applies in the continuous setting and leads to a simple proof for the beta-net theorem of Tao and Vu, which plays a key role in their recent studies of random matrices. All results extend to the general case when V is a subset of an abelian torsion-free group and eta_i are independent variables satisfying some weak conditions.
