Extended Orbits-Fixedpoints Relations
I extend further, using new proofs, two generalizations of an earlier orbits-fixed-points theorem, which was restricted to group action of the symmetric group. The extended equality makes use of the Stirling numbers of the second kind. An illustration using Mathieu group M24 is discussed. Possible applications using tensor products of matrix permutation representations is indicated.
Γ-species and the enumeration of k-trees

We study the class of graphs known as k-trees through the lens of Joyal's theory of combinatorial species (and an equivariant extension known as '$Γ$-species' which incorporates data about 'structural' group actions). This culminates in a system of recursive functional equations giving the generating function for unlabeled k-trees which allows for fast, efficient computation of their numbers. Enumerations up to k = 10 and n = 30 (for a k-tree with (n+k-1) vertices) are included in tables, and Sage code for the general computation is included in an appendix.
Automorphism Groups of Graphical Models and Lifted Variational Inference
Using the theory of group action, we first introduce the concept of the automorphism group of an exponential family or a graphical model, thus formalizing the general notion of symmetry of a probabilistic model. This automorphism group provides a precise mathematical framework for lifted inference in the general exponential family. Its group action partitions the set of random variables and feature functions into equivalent classes (called orbits) having identical marginals and expectations. Then the inference problem is effectively reduced to that of computing marginals or expectations for each class, thus avoiding the need to deal with each individual variable or feature. We demonstrate the usefulness of this general framework in lifting two classes of variational approximation for MAP inference: local LP relaxation and local LP relaxation with cycle constraints; the latter yields the first lifted inference that operate on a bound tighter than local constraints. Initial experimental results demonstrate that lifted MAP inference with cycle constraints achieved the state of the art performance, obtaining much better objective function values than local approximation while remaining relatively efficient.
Canonical forms of small tensors over F_2
We consider multidimensional arrays with at most 27 entries over the field with two elements, and their equivalence classes for the action of the direct product of general linear groups. The possible 3-dimensional formats are p x 2 x 2 (p = 2, ..., 6), p x 3 x 2 (p = 3, 4), and 3 x 3 x 3; the possible 4-dimensional formats are p x 2 x 2 x 2 (p = 2, 3). In each case, we compute the orbits for the group action, and then we determine the rank of each orbit. In particular, we determine the maximum rank for these arrays over F_2.

The Canada Day Theorem is an identity involving sums of $k \times k$ minors of an arbitrary $n \times n$ symmetric matrix. It was discovered as a by-product of the work on so-called peakon solutions of an integrable nonlinear partial differential equation proposed by V. Novikov. Here we present another proof of this theorem, which explains the underlying mechanism in terms of the orbits of a certain abelian group action on the set of all $k$-edge matchings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$.

We study geometric and combinatorial properties of the degenerate flag varieties of type A. These varieties are acted upon by the automorphism group of a certain representation of a type A quiver, containing a maximal torus T. Using the group action, we describe the moment graphs, encoding the zero- and one-dimensional T-orbits. We also study the smooth and singular loci of the degenerate flag varieties. We show that the Euler characteristic of the smooth locus is equal to the large Schröder number and the Poincaré polynomial is given by a natural statistics counting the number of diagonal steps in a Schröder path. As an application we obtain a new combinatorial description of the large and small Schröder numbers and their q-analogues.

Consider the polynomial ring in countably infinitely many variables over a field of characteristic zero, together with its natural action of the infinite general linear group G. We study the algebraic and homological properties of finitely generated modules over this ring that are equipped with a compatible G-action. We define and prove finiteness properties for analogues of Hilbert series, systems of parameters, depth, local cohomology, Koszul duality, and regularity. We also show that this category is built out of a simpler, more combinatorial, quiver category which we describe explicitly.
Our work is motivated by recent papers in the literature which study finiteness properties of infinite polynomial rings equipped with group actions. (For example, the paper by Church, Ellenberg and Farb on the category of FI-modules, which is equivalent to our category.) Along the way, we see several connections with the character polynomials from the representation theory of the symmetric groups. Several examples are given to illustrate that the invariants we introduce are explicit and computable.
Counting Group Valued Graph Colorings
There are many variations on partition functions for graph homomorphisms or colorings. The case considered here is a counting or hard constraint problem in which the range or color graph carries a free and vertex transitive Abelian group action so that the colors are identified with the elements of this group. A Fourier transform is used to obtain an expansion for the numbers of colorings with terms indexed by isthmus free subgraphs of the domain. The terms are products of a polynomial in the edge density a of the color graph and the number of colorings of the indexing subgraph of the domain into the complementary color graph. The polynomial in a is independent of the color group and the term has order (1-a) to the r where r is the number of vertices minus the number of components in the indexing subgraph. Thus if (1-a) is small there is a main term indexed by the empty subgraph which is a polynomial in a and the first dependence on the coloring group occurs in the lowest order corrections which are indexed by the shortest cycles in the graph and are of order (1-a) to the g-1 where g is the length of these shortest cycles. The main theorem is stated as a reciprocity law. Examples are given in which the coloring groups are long cycles and products of short cycles and adjacent vertices are required to have distant rather than distinct colors. The chromatic polynomial of a graph corresponds to using any group and taking the allowed set to be the complement of the identity.

Hyperfiniteness or amenability of measurable equivalence relations and group actions has been studied for almost fifty years. Recently, unexpected applications of hyperfiniteness were found in computer science in the context of testability of graph properties. In this paper we propose a unified approach to hyperfiniteness. We establish some new results and give new proofs of theorems of Schramm, Lovász, Newman-Sohler and Ornstein-Weiss.

Generalized alcoved polytopes are polytopes whose facet normals are roots in a given root system. We call a set of points in an alcoved polytope a generating set if there does not exist a strictly smaller alcoved polytope containing it. The type $A$ alcoved polytopes are precisely the tropical polytopes that are also convex in the usual sense. In this case the tropical generators form a generating set. We show that for any root system other than $F_4$, every alcoved polytope invariant under the natural Weyl group action has a generating set of cardinality equal to the Coxeter number of the root system.

For a CAT(0) cube complex $\mathbf X$, we define a simplicial flag complex $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$, called the \emph{simplicial boundary}, which is a natural setting for studying non-hyperbolic behavior of $\mathbf X$. We compare $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ to the Roller, visual, and Tits boundaries of $\mathbf X$ and give conditions under which the natural CAT(1) metric on $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ makes it (quasi)isometric to the Tits boundary. $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ allows us to interpolate between studying geodesic rays in $\mathbf X$ and the geometry of its \emph{contact graph} $Γ\mathbf X$, which is known to be quasi-isometric to a tree, and we characterize essential cube complexes for which the contact graph is bounded. Using related techniques, we study divergence of combinatorial geodesics in $\mathbf X$ using $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$. Finally, we rephrase the rank-rigidity theorem of Caprace-Sageev in terms of group actions on $Γ\mathbf X$ and $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ and state characterizations of cubulated groups with linear divergence in terms of $Γ\mathbf X$ and $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$.

This paper finds relationships between multiple logarithms with a dihedral group action on the arguments. I generalize the combinatorics developed in Gangl, Goncharov and Levin's R-deco polygon representation of multiple logarithms to find these relations. By writing multiple logarithms as iterated integrals, my arguments are valid for iterated integrals as over an arbitrary field.

A permutation representation of a Coxeter group $W$ naturally defines an absolute order. This family of partial orders (which includes the absolute order on $W$) is introduced and studied in this paper. Conditions under which the associated rank generating polynomial divides the rank generating polynomial of the absolute order on $W$ are investigated when $W$ is finite. Several examples, including a symmetric group action on perfect matchings, are discussed. As an application, a well-behaved absolute order on the alternating subgroup of $W$ is defined.
A braid group action on parking functions
We construct an action of the braid group on $n$ strands on the set of parking functions of $n$ cars such that elementary braids have orbits of length 2 or 3. The construction is motivated by a theorem of Lyashko and Looijenga stating that the number of the distinguished bases for $A_n$ singularity equals $(n+1)^{n-1}$ and thus equals the number of parking functions. We construct an explicit bijection between the set of parking functions and the set of distinguished bases, which allows us to translate the braid group action on distinguished bases in terms of parking functions.

We define Drinfeld orbifold algebras as filtered algebras deforming the skew group algebra (semi-direct product) arising from the action of a finite group on a polynomial ring. They simultaneously generalize Weyl algebras, graded (or Drinfeld) Hecke algebras, rational Cherednik algebras, symplectic reflection algebras, and universal enveloping algebras of Lie algebras with group actions. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on defining parameters to obtain Drinfeld orbifold algebras in two general formats, both algebraic and homological. We explain the connection between Hochschild cohomology and a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt property explicitly (using Gerstenhaber brackets). We also classify those deformations of skew group algebras which arise as Drinfeld orbifold algebras and give applications for abelian groups.

The cohomology of the configuration space of n points in R^3 admits a symmetric group action and has been shown to be isomorphic to the regular representation. One way to prove this is by defining an S^1-action whose fixed point set is the complement of the braid arrangement and using equivariant cohomology to show that the cohomology of the configuration space is the associated graded algebra of the cohomology of the arrangement complement. In this paper, we will extend this result to the setting of affine subspace arrangements coming from real hyperplane arrangements using similar methods. We also provide a presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring and extend some results to the setting of oriented matroids.

We present a symmetric LDPC code with constant rate and constant distance (i.e. good LDPC code) that its constraint space is generated by the orbit of one constant weight constraint under a group action. Our construction provides the first symmetric LDPC good codes. This solves the main open problem raised by Kaufman and Wigderson in [4].

A labeled set partition is a partition of a set of integers whose arcs are labeled by nonzero elements of an abelian group $A$. Inspired by the action of the linear characters of the unitriangular group on its supercharacters, we define a group action of $A^n$ on the set of $A$-labeled partitions of an $(n+1)$-set. By investigating the orbit decomposition of various families of set partitions under this action, we derive new combinatorial proofs of Coker's identity for the Narayana polynomial and its type B analogue, and establish a number of other related identities. In return, we also prove some enumerative results concerning André and Neto's supercharacter theories of type B and D.
A Penrose polynomial for embedded graphs

We extend the Penrose polynomial, originally defined only for plane graphs, to graphs embedded in arbitrary surfaces. Considering this Penrose polynomial of embedded graphs leads to new identities and relations for the Penrose polynomial which can not be realized within the class of plane graphs. In particular, by exploiting connections with the transition polynomial and the ribbon group action, we find a deletion-contraction-type relation for the Penrose polynomial. We relate the Penrose polynomial of an orientable checkerboard colourable graph to the circuit partition polynomial of its medial graph and use this to find new combinatorial interpretations of the Penrose polynomial. We also show that the Penrose polynomial of a plane graph G can be expressed as a sum of chromatic polynomials of twisted duals of G. This allows us to obtain a new reformulation of the Four Colour Theorem.
Quiver Grassmannians and degenerate flag varieties

Quiver Grassmannians are varieties parametrizing subrepresentations of a quiver representation. It is observed that certain quiver Grassmannians for type A quivers are isomorphic to the degenerate flag varieties investigated earlier by the second named author. This leads to the consideration of a class of Grassmannians of subrepresentations of the direct sum of a projective and an injective representation of a Dynkin quiver. It is proven that these are (typically singular) irreducible normal local complete intersection varieties, which admit a group action with finitely many orbits, and a cellular decomposition. For type A quivers explicit formulas for the Euler characteristic (the median Genocchi numbers) and the Poincare polynomials are derived.
