Crapo introduced a construction of interval partitions of the Boolean lattice for sets equipped with matroid structure. This construction, in the context of graphic matroids, is related to the notion of edge activities introduced by Tutte. This implies that each spanning subgraph of a connected graph can be constructed from edges of exactly one spanning tree by deleting a unique subset of internally active edges and adding a unique subset of externally active edges. Since the family of vertex independent sets does not give rise to a matroid structure we can not apply Crapo's construction on the vertex set when using the family of independent sets as generating sets. In this paper, we introduce the concept of vertex activities to tackle the problem of generating interval partitions of the Boolean lattice of the vertex set. We show how to generate a cover, present some properties related to vertex activities of some special maximal independent sets and consider some special graphs. Finally, we will show that level labellings in pruned graphs always generate a partition.

We introduce delta-graphic matroids, which are matroids whose bases form graphic delta-matroids. The class of delta-graphic matroids contains graphic matroids as well as cographic matroids and is a proper subclass of the class of regular matroids. We give a structural characterization of the class of delta-graphic matroids. We also show that every forbidden minor for the class of delta-graphic matroids has at most $48$ elements.

Let us consider a truncated matroid $M_Γ^{r}$ of rank $r$ of a graphic matroid of a graph $Γ$. The basis for $M_Γ^{r}$ is the set of the forests with $r$ edges in $Γ$. We consider this basis generating function and compute its Hessian. In this paper, we show that the Hessian of the basis generating function of the truncated matroid of the graphic matroid of the complete or complete bipartite graph does not vanish by calculating the eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix. Moreover, we show that the Hessian matrix of the basis generating function of the truncated matroid of the graphic matroid of the complete or complete bipartite graph has exactly one positive eigenvalue. As an application, we show the strong Lefschetz property for the Artinian Gorenstein algebra associated to the truncated matroid.

A well-known conjecture of Richard Stanley posits that the $h$-vector of the independence complex of a matroid is a pure ${\mathcal O}$-sequence. The conjecture has been established for various classes but is open for graphic matroids. A biconed graph is a graph with two specified `coning vertices', such that every vertex of the graph is connected to at least one coning vertex. The class of biconed graphs includes coned graphs, Ferrers graphs, and complete multipartite graphs. We study the $h$-vectors of graphic matroids arising from biconed graphs, providing a combinatorial interpretation of their entries in terms of `$2$-weighted forests' of the underlying graph. This generalizes constructions of Kook and Lee who studied the Möbius coinvariant (the last nonzero entry of the $h$-vector) of graphic matroids of complete bipartite graphs. We show that allowing for partially $2$-weighted forests gives rise to a pure multicomplex whose face count recovers the $h$-vector, establishing Stanley's conjecture for this class of matroids. We also discuss how our constructions relate to a combinatorial strengthening of Stanley's Conjecture (due to Klee and Samper) for this class of matroids.
The Fine-Grained Complexity of Computing the Tutte Polynomial of a Linear Matroid
We show that computing the Tutte polynomial of a linear matroid of dimension $k$ on $k^{O(1)}$ points over a field of $k^{O(1)}$ elements requires $k^{Ω(k)}$ time unless the \#ETH---a counting extension of the Exponential Time Hypothesis of Impagliazzo and Paturi [CCC 1999] due to Dell {\em et al.} [ACM TALG 2014]---is false. This holds also for linear matroids that admit a representation where every point is associated to a vector with at most two nonzero coordinates. We also show that the same is true for computing the Tutte polynomial of a binary matroid of dimension $k$ on $k^{O(1)}$ points with at most three nonzero coordinates in each point's vector. This is in sharp contrast to computing the Tutte polynomial of a $k$-vertex graph (that is, the Tutte polynomial of a {\em graphic} matroid of dimension $k$---which is representable in dimension $k$ over the binary field so that every vector has two nonzero coordinates), which is known to be computable in $2^k k^{O(1)}$ time [Björklund {\em et al.}, FOCS 2008]. Our lower-bound proofs proceed via (i) a connection due to Crapo and Rota [1970] between the number of tuples of codewords of full support and the Tutte polynomial of the matroid associated with the code; (ii) an earlier-established \#ETH-hardness of counting the solutions to a bipartite $(d,2)$-CSP on $n$ vertices in $d^{o(n)}$ time; and (iii) new embeddings of such CSP instances as questions about codewords of full support in a linear code. We complement these lower bounds with two algorithm designs. The first design computes the Tutte polynomial of a linear matroid of dimension~$k$ on $k^{O(1)}$ points in $k^{O(k)}$ operations. The second design generalizes the Björklund~{\em et al.} algorithm and runs in $q^{k+1}k^{O(1)}$ time for linear matroids of dimension $k$ defined over the $q$-element field by $k^{O(1)}$ points with at most two nonzero coordinates each.
On graphic splitting of regular matroids
Raghunathan at al. [9] introduced splitting operation with respect to a pair of element for binary matroid and characterized Eulerian binary matroids using it. In general, the splitting operation does not preserve the graphicness property of the given matroids. Shikare and Waphare [10] obtained the characterization for the class of graphic matroids which yield graphic matroids under the splitting operation with respect to a pair of elements. We study the effect of the splitting operation on regular matroids and characterize the class of regular matroids which yield graphic matroids under the splitting operation. We also provide an alternate and short proof to two of the known results.

A matroid is Gorenstein if its toric variety is. Hibi, Lasoń, Matsuda, Michałek, and Vodička provided a full graph-theoretic classification of Gorenstein matroids associated to simple graphs. We extend this classification to multigraphs.
List colouring of two matroids through reduction to partition matroids
In the list coloring problem for two matroids, we are given matroids $M_1=(S,{\cal I}_1)$ and $M_2=(S,{\cal I}_2)$ on the same ground set $S$, and the goal is to determine the smallest number $k$ such that given arbitrary lists $L_s$ of $k$ colors for $s\in S$, it is possible to choose a color from each list so that every monochromatic set is independent in both $M_1$ and $M_2$. When both $M_1$ and $M_2$ are partition matroids, Galvin's list coloring theorem for bipartite graphs gives the answer. One of the main open questions is to decide if there exists a constant $c$ such that if the coloring number is $k$ (i.e., the ground set can be partitioned into $k$ common independent sets), then the list coloring number is at most $c\cdot k$. We consider matroid classes that appear naturally in combinatorial optimization problems, namely graphic matroids, paving matroids and gammoids. We show that if both matroids are from these fundamental classes, then the list coloring number is at most twice the coloring number.
The proof is based on a new approach that reduces a matroid to a partition matroid without increasing its coloring number too much, and might be of independent combinatorial interest. In particular, we show that if $M=(S,{\cal I})$ is a matroid in which $S$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets, then there exists a partition matroid $N=(S,{\cal J})$ with ${\cal J}\subseteq{\cal I}$ in which $S$ can be partitioned into (A) $k$ independent sets if $M$ is a transversal matroid, (B) $2k-1$ independent sets if $M$ is a graphic matroid, (C) $\lceil kr/(r-1)\rceil$ independent sets if $M$ is a paving matroid of rank $r$, and (D) $2k-2$ independent sets if $M$ is a gammoid. We extend our results by showing that the existence of a matroid $N$ with $χ(N)\leq 2χ(M)$ implies the existence of a matroid $N'$ with $χ(N')\leq 2χ(M')$ for every truncation $M'$ of $M$.

Blasiak verified a conjecture of White for graphic matroids by showing that the toric ideal of a graphic matroid is generated by quadrics. In this paper, we extend this result to frame matroids satisfying a linearity condition. Such classes of matroids include graphic matroids, bicircular matroids, signed graphic matroids, and more generally frame matroids obtained from group-labelled graphs.

Zaslavsky introduced the concept of lifted-graphic matroid. For binary matroids, a binary elementary lift can be defined in terms of the splitting operation. In this paper, we give a method to get a forbidden-minor characterization for the class of graphic matroids whose all lifted-graphic matroids are also graphic using the splitting operation.
The Maximum Matroid of a Graph
The ground set for all matroids in this paper is the set of all edges of a complete graph. The notion of a {\it maximum matroid for a graph} $G$ is introduced, and the existence and uniqueness of the maximum matroid for any graph $G$ is proved. The maximum matroid for $K_3$ is shown to be the cycle (or graphic) matroid. This result is pursued in two directions - to determine the maximum matroid for the $m$-cycle $C_m$ and to determine the maximum matroid for the complete graph $K_m$. The maximum matroid for $K_4$ is the matroid whose bases are the Laman graphs, related to structural rigidity of frameworks in the plane. The maximum matroid for $K_5$ is related to a famous 153 year old open problem of J. C. Maxwell.

We present a formula which relates the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid $M$, as defined by Elias, Proudfoot and Wakefield, to the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of the matroid obtained by deleting an element, and various contractions and localizations of $M$. We give a number of applications of our formula to Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of graphic matroids, including a simple formula for the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of a parallel connection graph.
Regular matroids have polynomial extension complexity

We prove that the extension complexity of the independence polytope of every regular matroid on $n$ elements is $O(n^6)$. Past results of Wong and Martin on extended formulations of the spanning tree polytope of a graph imply a $O(n^2)$ bound for the special case of (co)graphic matroids. However, the case of a general regular matroid was open, despite recent attempts. We also consider the extension complexity of circuit dominants of regular matroids, for which we give a $O(n^2)$ bound.

The toric variety of a matroid is projectively normal, and therefore it is Cohen-Macaulay. We provide a complete graph-theoretic classification when the toric variety of a graphic matroid is Gorenstein.
Strict log-concavity of the Kirchhoff polynomial and its applications to the strong Lefschetz property
Anari, Gharan, and Vinzant proved (complete) log-concavity of the basis generating functions for all matroids. From the viewpoint of combinatorial Hodge theory, it is natural to ask whether these functions are "strictly" log-concave for simple matroids. In this paper, we show this strictness for simple graphic matroids, that is, we show that Kirchhoff polynomials of simple graphs are strictly log-concave. Our key observation is that the Kirchhoff polynomial {of a complete graph} can be seen as the (irreducible) relative invariant of a certain prehomogeneous vector space, which may be independently interesting in its own right. Furthermore, we prove that for any $a_i\in\mathbb{R}_{>0}$, $a_1x_1+\cdots+a_nx_n\in R^1_{M}$ satisfies the strong Lefschetz property (moreover, Hodge--Riemann bilinear relation) at degree one of the Artinian Gorenstein algebra $R^*_M$ associated to a graphic matroid $M$, which is defined by Maeno and Numata for all matroids.
The eigenvalues of Hessian matrices of the complete and complete bipartite graphs
In this paper, we consider the Hessian matrices $H_Γ$ of the complete and complete bipartite graphs, and the special value of $\tilde H_Γ$ at $x_{i}=1$ for all $x_{i}$. We compute the eigenvalues of $\tilde H_Γ$. We show that one of them is positive and that the others are negative. In other words, the metric with respect to the symmetric matrix $\tilde H_Γ$ is Lorentzian. Hence those Hessian $\det (H_Γ)$ are not identically zero. As an application, we show the strong Lefschetz property for the Artinian Gorenstein algebra associated to the graphic matroids of the complete and complete bipartite graphs with at most five vertices.

This paper introduces Dirichlet matroids, a generalization of graphic matroids arising from electrical networks. We present four main theorems. First, we exhibit a matroid quotient involving geometric duals of networks embedded in surfaces with boundary. Second, we characterize the Bergman fans of Dirichlet matroids as subfans of graphic Bergman fans. Third, we prove an interlacing result on the real zeros and poles of the trace of the response matrix. And fourth, we bound the coefficients of the precoloring polynomial of a network by the coefficients of the associated chromatic polynomial.

Vf-safe delta-matroids have the desirable property of behaving well under certain duality operations. Several important classes of delta-matroids are known to be vf-safe, including the class of ribbon-graphic delta-matroids, which is related to the class of ribbon graphs or embedded graphs in the same way that graphic matroids correspond to graphs. In this paper, we characterize vf-safe delta-matroids and ribbon-graphic delta-matroids by finding the minimal obstructions, called excluded 3-minors, to membership in the class. We find the unique (up to twisted duality) excluded $3$-minor within the class of set systems for the class of vf-safe delta-matroids. In the literature, binary delta-matroids appear in many different guises, with appropriate notions of minor operations equivalent to that of $3$-minors, perhaps most notably as graphs with vertex minors. We give a direct explanation of this equivalence and show that some well-known results may be expressed in terms of $3$-minors.

The Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid was introduced by Elias, Proudfoot and Wakefield, whose properties need to be further explored. In this paper we prove that the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of fan matroids coincide with Motzkin polynomials, which was recently conjectured by Gedeon. As a byproduct, we determine the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of graphic matroids of squares of paths. We further obtain explicit formulas of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of wheel matroids and whirl matroids. We prove the real-rootedness of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of these matroids, which provides positive evidence for a conjecture due to Gedeon, Proudfoot and Young. Based on the results on the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, we also determine the $Z$-polynomials of fan matroids, wheel matroids and whirl matroids, and prove their real-rootedness, which provides further evidence in support of a conjecture of Proudfoot, Xu, and Young.
Covering vectors by spaces: Regular matroids

Seymour's decomposition theorem for regular matroids is a fundamental result with a number of combinatorial and algorithmic applications. In this work we demonstrate how this theorem can be used in the design of parameterized algorithms on regular matroids. We consider the problem of covering a set of vectors of a given finite dimensional linear space (vector space) by a subspace generated by a set of vectors of minimum size. Specifically, in the Space Cover problem, we are given a matrix M and a subset of its columns T; the task is to find a minimum set F of columns of M disjoint with T such that that the linear span of F contains all vectors of T. For graphic matroids this problem is essentially Stainer Forest and for cographic matroids this is a generalization of Multiway Cut. Our main result is the algorithm with running time 2^{O(k)}||M|| ^{O(1)} solving Space Cover in the case when M is a totally unimodular matrix over rationals, where k is the size of F. In other words, we show that on regular matroids the problem is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by the rank of the covering subspace.
