Hypermaps with hyperedges of length at most $3$
We study the computation of our recently introduced Whitney polynomial and the enumeration of the spanning hypertrees for hypermaps whose hyperedges have length at most $3$. This is a class of hypermaps where the computation of the above invariants depends only on the underlying (multi)hypergraph structure. We develop deletion-contraction formulas involving six types of generalized loops and bridges, and we prove results on special substitutions into our Whitney polynomial. We generalize the reliability polynomial and the random cluster model to hypermaps in general in such a way that they can be computed using our Whitney polynomial. Finally we explicitly count the spanning hypertrees in reciprocals of plane graphs in which every vertex has degree at most $3$.

Subgraphs versus Orientations: Infinite families of equidistributions
A classical enumerative result states that, given a graph $G$ and a vertex $u$, the number of connected subgraphs of $G$ is equal to the number of orientations of $G$ such that every vertex can reach $u$ by a directed path. We show that this result is an instance of a much broader set of enumerative identities between subgraphs and orientations corresponding to various connectivity constraints. Namely, given two sets of pairs of vertices $A=\{(u_i,v_i), i\in[k]\}$ and $B=\{(u_i',v_i'), i\in[l]\}$, we consider the orientations $α$ of $G$ such that adding the elements of $A$ and $B$ as additional directed edges to $α$ gives an orientation $α'$ in which $v_i$ cannot reach $u_i$ for all $i\in[k]$, but $v_i'$ can reach $u_i'$ for all $i\in[l]$. We show that this set of orientations is equinumerous to a set of subgraphs satisfying the ``same" connectivity constraints defined in terms of $A$ and $B$. We also extend our results to the enumeration of equivalence classes of orientations satisfying such connectivity constraints. Precisely, we consider the equivalence classes under cycle reversal, cocycle reversal, or cycle-cocycle reversal. We show that the equivalences classes are equinumerous to some sets of subgraphs defined by connectivity and acyclicity constraints.

Counting symmetric unimodular triangulations
The objects of study are triangulations of the dilated standard triangle in the plane. Motivated by work on T-curves (Geiselmann et al., 2026), the focus lies on unimodular triangulations with a fixed symmetry axis. Lower and upper bounds are given, in combination with full enumerations of a few small cases.
Analytic Properties of Necklace Polynomials
The necklace polynomials \[ M_n(x)=\frac1n\sum_{d\mid n}μ(d)x^{n/d} \] play a central role in discrete mathematics: they count aperiodic necklaces, enumerate monic irreducible polynomials over finite fields, and give the dimensions of homogeneous components of free Lie algebras. Despite their inherently discrete origins, we show that treating $M_n(x)$ as a function of a real variable $x$ unlocks surprising structural properties that answer natural enumerative questions. In this paper, we study $M_n(x)$ as a real-variable function and establish several new analytical and monotonicity properties. We prove that the normalized functions $M_n(x)/x^n$ and their higher normalized derivatives are strictly increasing on $[1,\infty)$. As a consequence, we show that the proportion of irreducible polynomials of fixed degree over $\mathbf F_q$ increases with $q$. We also establish strict growth with respect to the degree $n$ for $x\ge2$. In addition, we determine a sharp threshold for log-convexity: the sequence $\{M_n(x)\}_{n\ge2}$ is uniformly log-convex if and only if $x>8$. These results reveal unexpected analytic structure underlying necklace polynomials and show how real-variable methods can yield new information about discrete enumeration problems. For instance, it is shown that adding one more bead to a sufficiently long necklace will approximately increase the total number of primitive, rotationally distinct configurations by a factor of the number of available colors.

Motzkin paths with two variants of level steps on odd levels -- a kernel method approach
The sequence A176677 in the Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences enumerates Motzkin paths where two types of horizontal steps may occur, but only on odd indexed levels. We show how to perform the enumeration, also dealing with partial such Motzkin paths leading to a particular level or to any level (open paths). The method is the kernel method where functional equations are manipulated in a suitable way. The coefficients of sequence A176677 satisfy a holonomic recursion that was recently discussed on the arxiv. We show how this can be established in an (almost) automatic fashion. Eventually we switch the roles of `odd' and `even'. One could also allow more versions of horizontal steps but we leave this to the interested readers.
Counting Spinal Tree-Child Networks via Word Encodings and Generating Functions
We study the enumeration of spinal tree-child phylogenetic networks, a rigid family of tree-child networks in which all internal vertices lie on a single root--to--leaf path. We provide two complementary combinatorial frameworks. First, we introduce a word model: unlabeled spinal networks correspond to a suitable class of restricted words with fixed multiplicities, taken modulo a simple relabeling equivalence, which yields an explicit closed enumeration. Second, we develop a symbolic-method approach based on a marked version of trees that admits a clean recursive specification; its boxed-product translation leads to a solvable bivariate generating function and a direct derivation of the coefficients.
Symmetric Sudoku-Type Games from Perfect Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper presents a novel construction method for symmetric Sudoku-type games based on Lee distance perfect codes and diameter perfect codes. The proposed method utilizes the tiling property of these codes to define the structure of the subgrid constraints of Sudoku-type games. In this way, our games inherit the symmetric properties of Sudoku. We provide a detailed analysis of two small cases: a $5 \times 5$ Sudoku in $\mathbb{Z}_5^2$, and an $8 \times 8$ Sudoku in $\mathbb{Z}_8^2$. By defining equivalence relations via rigid motions, we provide a complete enumeration of valid grids, identifying 17 inequivalent solutions for $5\times 5$ Sudoku. For two different types of $8\times 8$ Sudoku, we characterize 232,735 and 304,014 inequivalent solutions, respectively. Furthermore, to verify practical playability, we implement a human-like solver that assesses the difficulty of the generated games. The analysis confirms that our $5\times5$ Sudoku games offer a balanced distribution of difficulty levels, ranging from Easy to Hard, making them a viable alternative to traditional $9 \times 9$ Sudoku.

The vertex Folkman number $F_v(3,3;5)$ equals~$8$
The vertex Folkman number $F_v(s,t;k)$ is the smallest $n$ for which there exists a $K_k$-free graph on $n$ vertices whose vertices cannot be $2$-colored without producing a monochromatic copy of $K_s$ or $K_t$. We show $F_v(3,3;5)=8$. The witness is the cone $K_1 \vee \overline{C_7}$, a single universal vertex joined to the complement of a $7$-cycle. That this graph is $K_5$-free and arrows $(3,3)^v$ follows from a short independence-number argument. The matching lower bound -- no $K_5$-free graph on $7$ or fewer vertices works -- comes from exhaustive enumeration via nauty and a SAT check using Glucose\,4. The appendix has a self-contained Python script for verification.

CombOL: a Library for Practical Enumeration and Boltzmann Sampling of Combinatorial Classes
We present CombOL (Combinatorial Objects Library), an open-source library for the enumeration and Boltzmann sampling of combinatorial classes. Classes can be specified by a concise string syntax, and may depend on an arbitrary number of parameters. CombOL automatically derives the associated generating functions, enabling the generation of counting sequences and the compilation of Boltzmann samplers. The library supports exact and approximate-size Boltzmann rejection sampling with automatic parameter tuning to target specific sizes. In addition to implementing established methods, CombOL contributes a novel early-rejection scheme, as well as guaranteed statistical correctness by dynamically increasing the numerical precision, eliminating bias due to floating-point rounding errors. Through the Python interface, sampled structures can be mapped to application-specific objects, enabling direct sampling of domain objects such as graphs, chemical structure representations, or other complex data types. CombOL is available from PyPI as 'combol' (pypi.org/project/combol). The source code is available at gitlab.com/casbjorn/combol.

A Partition-Based Generating Function for Row-Convex Polyominoes
An alternative generating function is proposed to enumerate row-convex polyominoes without internal holes on a discrete grid. The approach is based on integer partitions of the total area, where each partition corresponds to a sequence of row lengths, and the product of all permutations of the parts accounts for all possible horizontal alignments of consecutive rows. Summing over the products yields a formula for the total number of convex polyominoes of a given size. Numerical examples are provided for small areas, and the exact generating function is derived via a transfer series argument, establishing the asymptotic growth S(N) as A2^(N) cos(N*theta) + phi) with theta = arctan(sqrt(7)/3). The method establishes a direct connection between integer partitions and polyomino enumeration, offering a simple yet effective framework for both exact and asymptotic combinatorial analysis. Potential applications include shape priors in discrete image analysis, grid-based modeling, and combinatorial generation of convex structures.

A bibasic double sum extension of a $q$-binomial theorem arising out of subspace enumeration
We prove a conjecture that arose in the context of a subspace enumeration problem over finite fields. We prove, more generally, a bibasic, double-sum identity, which extends a $q$-analogue of the (terminating) binomial theorem.

On a conjecture of distance spectral extremal problems
Brualdi and Hoffman proposed a well-known problem of determining the graph with maximum adjacency spectral radius among all graphs with given size $m$. Early work by Friedland and Stanley addressed some specific cases. This problem was later completely solved by Rowlinson and recently revisited by Cheng and Weng. Pioneering work on the distance matrix was carried out by Graham and Pollak, as well as by Graham and Lovász. The distance spectral radius $ρ(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of its distance matrix. In this paper, we completely solve the problem of characterizing the connected graph with minimum distance spectral radius among all graphs with size $m$. Let $\mathcal{G}(m)$ be the class of connected graphs with $m$ edges. For every $m \ge 3$, let $n$ be the unique integer satisfying $\binom{n-1}{2} < m \le \binom{n}{2}$, and we write $m = \binom{n-1}{2} + s$ with $1 \le s \le n-1$. Recently, Lin and Zhou [Adv. in Appl. Math. 173 (2026)] investigated the graph in $\mathcal{G}(m)$ that minimizes $ρ(G)$ in the range $s \ge \max\{ \frac{n-6}{2}, 1\}$. However, the problem is much more difficult in the remaining range $1 \le s \le \frac{n-7}{2}$, and they conjectured that the unique minimizer is $\overline{P_{n,s+1}}$, the complement of a balanced disjoint union of paths. Using novel matrix analysis, we solve this conjecture in the affirmative. Moreover, we provide a new unified proof for the entire range $1 \le s \le n-1$. The key ingredients in our proof argument include an innovative comparison principle for the distance spectral radius, an increment analysis of $Φ$-functions on paths and cycles, an argument for balancing path lengths, and a walk enumeration technique via the Neumann series.

MacNeille completions of parabolic quotients
Alternating sign matrices (ASMs) arise as the Dedekind-MacNeille completion of the Bruhat order on the symmetric group. They enjoy fruitful combinatorial and geometric properties, with a particularly rich history on enumerations and bijections. In this paper, we explicitly describe the Dedekind-MacNeille completion of the Bruhat order on any parabolic quotients of the symmetric group. It is naturally a subposet of the alternating sign matrices, with different lattice operations. Moreover, we demonstrate the relations between the meet and join operations in this lattice with taking unions and intersections of the corresponding ASM varieties, respectively. Finally, we conclude with a more detailed discussion of special cases.
Arithmetical Structures on Ladder Graphs
In this paper, we investigate arithmetical structures on Cartesian product graphs, particularly, ladder graph of the form P2\square Pm and grid graph of the form Pn \square Pm. An arithmetical structure on a finite and connected graph G is a pair (d, r) of positive integer vectors such that r is primitive (the gcd of its entries is 1) and (diag(d) - A)r = 0, where A is the adjacency matrix of G. Arithmetical structures have been widely studied for basic graph families such as paths and cycles. Extending these ideas to graph products, we first analyze the ladder graph P2 \square Pm, deriving structural properties and identifying patterns in the corresponding arithmetical configurations. We then generalize these results to the grid graph Pn \square Pm, where increased complexity arises due to higher-dimensional interactions. Our work provides new insights into the behavior, characterization, and enumeration of arithmetical structures on grid-like graphs, contributing to the broader understanding of Laplacian based invariants and their combinatorial properties.

Enumerating Multi-Operator Monomials in Commutative and Noncommutative Settings
We study enumeration problems for multi-operator monomials generated from one indeterminate by an associative multiplication together with finitely many unary operators. We consider four regimes, according to whether multiplication is commutative and whether the unary operators commute. In the case where the unary operators do not commute, we obtain explicit multigraded generating functions and coefficient formulas, including a multinomial refinement of the Narayana numbers, together with interpretations in terms of rooted trees, restricted lattice paths, and binary trees. When the unary operators commute, we derive canonical representatives and effective recurrences, with corresponding monotonicity conditions in the combinatorial models. When multiplication is commutative, the sequence decomposition is replaced by a multiset decomposition, leading to exp--log generating functions and Euler-transform recurrences. In special cases, the resulting sequences recover classical families including the Catalan numbers, the small Schröder numbers, and rooted-tree numbers.

Permutations that strongly avoid 132
A permutation $π$ strongly avoids the pattern $τ$ if both $π$ and $π^2$ avoid $τ$. In this paper, we enumerate permutations of size $n$ that strongly avoid the pattern 132. This enumeration allows us to prove a conjecture that the growth rate of such permutations is 2.

Boundary $h^\ast$-vectors and unimodular triangulations
We study the Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomial of (the boundary of) a lattice polytope via regular unimodular triangulations and Gröbner degenerations of toric ideals. Our main result is a boundary analogue of the well-known Sturmfels correspondence. This allows us to connect the boundary $h^\ast$-polynomial to the $h$-polynomial of any regular unimodular triangulation, in analogy to the classical Betke-McMullen Theorem. Providing a direct link between Ehrhart theory and the face enumeration of simplicial complexes, we then transfer structural results from the theory of simplicial polytopes to the setting of lattice polytopes. In particular, we derive general Dehn-Sommerville-type relations between $h^\ast(P)$ and $h^\ast(\partial P)$. Under the additional assumption of $\partial P$ admitting a regular unimodular triangulation, we recover old and prove new characterization results concerning symmetry or unimodality, as well as upper and lower bounds for coefficient-wise differences within $h^\ast(P)$.
SAT + NAUTY: Orderly Generation of Small Kochen-Specker Sets Containing the Smallest State-independent Contextuality Set
We present a search for small Kochen-Specker (KS) sets in dimension 3, specifically targeting extensions of the 13-ray Yu-Oh set, which has been proven to be the minimal witness to state-independent contextuality. To enable this search, we introduce a novel SAT-based orderly generation framework integrating recursive canonical labeling (RCL) with the graph isomorphism tool NAUTY. We demonstrate that previous SAT approaches relying on lexicographical canonicity suffer from exponential scaling on canonical graphs. This limitation renders them intractable on the large instances (25 to 33 vertices) encountered in our search, whereas our RCL check maintains consistent millisecond-level performance, effectively eliminating the bottleneck. Overcoming this bottleneck allows us to perform the first exhaustive enumeration of all KS sets with up to 33 rays containing the complete 25-ray state-independent contextuality (SI-C) set obtained by rigid extensions of the Yu-Oh set in 1,641 CPU hours. We found and verified that the 33-ray set discovered by Schütte is the smallest three-dimensional KS set containing the complete 25-ray SI-C set. All non-existence results are backed by independently verifiable proof certificates via an extension of the DRAT proof format.

The complex of discrete Morse matchings of the $n$-simplex: homotopy types and structural results
The complex of discrete Morse matchings $\M(K)$, introduced by Chari and Joswig, is a simplicial complex whose simplices are the acyclic matchings on the Hasse diagram of $K$. Its homotopy type is known in only a handful of cases. In this paper, we compute the homotopy types of $\M(Δ^3)$ and $\M(\partialΔ^3)$, the corresponding pure complexes $\M_{P}(Δ^3) \simeq \M_{P}(\partialΔ^3)$, and the generalized complex of discrete Morse matchings $\GM(Δ^3) \simeq \GM(\partialΔ^3)$. For general $n$ we prove the identity $f(n) = (n+1) \cdot |\text{top-dimensional facets of } \M(Δ^n_{(n-2)})|$, reducing the enumeration of optimal matchings on $Δ^n$ to an enumeration on its $(n-2)$-skeleton, and we show that the inclusion $\M(K) \hookrightarrow \M(CK)$ is null-homotopic for any cone. We also compute the $f$-vector of $\M(Δ^4)$, whose top entry $f(4) = 380{,}125$ is the number of optimal discrete Morse matchings on $Δ^4$. We conclude with two conjectures extending the $\M_{P}$ and $\GM$ equivalences to all $n$.
Enumerations and Bijections for Stanley Polyominoes
Stanley polyominoes are a subclass of parallelogram polyominoes in which each row begins strictly to the right of the beginning of the previous row and ends strictly to the right of the end of the previous row. In this paper, we derive generating functions for Stanley polyominoes based on the numbers of columns and rows, area, semiperimeter, and numbers of interior points and edges. We also establish combinatorial connections through bijections with other combinatorial structures such as Dyck paths, skew Ferrer diagrams, and peakless Motzkin paths. As a byproduct, we answer the open question of finding a bijection between parallelogram polyominoes of area $n$ and coin fountains with $n$ coins in the even-numbered rows and $n-k$ coins in the odd-numbered rows.
