Norm bounds for Ehrhart polynomial roots
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 39 (2008), no. 1-3, 191--193 • View Publication • BIB
M. Beck, J. De Loera, M. Develin, J. Pfeifle and R. Stanley found that the roots of the Ehrhart polynomial of a d-dimensional lattice polytope are bounded above in norm by 1+(d+1)!. We provide an improved bound which is quadratic in d and applies to a larger family of polynomials.

Ehrhart polynomials of lattice-face polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
There is a simple formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of a cyclic polytope. The purpose of this paper is to show that the same formula holds for a more general class of polytopes, lattice-face polytopes. We develop a way of decomposing any d-dimensional simplex in general position into d! signed sets, each of which corresponds to a permutation in the symmetric group, and reduce the problem of counting lattice points in a polytope in general position to that of counting lattice points in these special signed sets. Applying this decomposition to a lattice-face simplex, we obtain signed sets with special properties that allow us to count the number of lattice points inside them. We are thus able to conclude the desired formula for the Ehrhart polynomials of lattice-face polytopes.

Ehrhart polynomial and Successive Minima
Published in Mathematika 52 (2005), 1-16 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the Ehrhart polynomial for the class of 0-symmetric convex lattice polytopes in Euclidean $n$-space $\mathbb{R}^n$. It turns out that the roots of the Ehrhart polynomial and Minkowski's successive minima are closely related by their geometric and arithmetic mean. We also show that the roots of lattice $n$-polytopes with or without interior lattice points differ essentially. Furthermore, we study the structure of the roots in the planar case. Here it turns out that their distribution reflects basic properties of lattice polygons.

Ehrhart polynomials and stringy Betti numbers

We study the connection between stringy Betti numbers of Gorenstein toric varieties and the generating functions of the Ehrhart polynomials of certain polyhedral regions. We use this point of view to give counterexamples to Hibi's conjecture on the unimodality of delta-vectors of reflexive polytopes.

On the geometry of graph arrangements
We use the results of AG/0406290 to discuss the counting formulas of network flow polytopes and magic squares, i.e. the formula for the corresponding Ehrhart polynomial in terms of residues. We also discuss a description of the big cells using the theory of non broken circuit bases.

Ehrhart polynomials of cyclic polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Ehrhart polynomial of an integral convex polytope counts the number of lattice points in dilates of the polytope. In math.CO/0402148, the authors conjectured that for any cyclic polytope with integral parameters, the Ehrhart polynomial of it is equal to its volume plus the Ehrhart polynomial of its lower envelope and proved the case when the dimension d = 2. In our article, we prove the conjecture for any dimension.
Lattice polytopes, Hecke operators, and the Ehrhart polynomial

Let P be a simple lattice polytope. We define an action of the Hecke operators on E (P), the Ehrhart polynomial of P, and describe their effect on the coefficients of E (P). We also describe how the Brion-Vergne formula transforms under the Hecke operators for nonsingular lattice polytopes P.
Coefficients and Roots of Ehrhart Polynomials
Published in Cont. Math. 374 (2005), 15-36 • View Publication • BIB
The Ehrhart polynomial of a convex lattice polytope counts integer points in integral dilates of the polytope. We present new linear inequalities satisfied by the coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials and relate them to known inequalities. We also investigate the roots of Ehrhart polynomials. We prove that for fixed d, there exists a bounded region of C containing all roots of Ehrhart polynomials of d-polytopes, and that all real roots of these polynomials lie in [-d, [d/2]). In contrast, we prove that when the dimension d is not fixed the positive real roots can be arbitrarily large. We finish with an experimental investigation of the Ehrhart polynomials of cyclic polytopes and 0/1-polytopes.

Ehrhart polynomials, simplicial polytopes, magic squares and a conjecture of Stanley
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is proved that a certain symmetric sequence of nonnegative integers arising in the enumeration of magic squares of given size n by row sums or, equivalently, in the generating function of the Ehrhart polynomial of the polytope of doubly stochastic n by n matrices, is equal to the h-vector of a simplicial polytope and hence that it satisfies the conditions of the g-theorem. The unimodality of this sequance, which follows, was conjectured by Stanley (1983). Several generalizations are given.

Counting Lattice Points by means of the Residue Theorem
Published in Ramanujan J. 4, no. 3 (2000), 299-310 • View Publication • BIB
We use the residue theorem to derive an expression for the number of lattice oints in a dilated n-dimensional tetrahedron with vertices at lattice points on each coordinate axis and the origin. This expression is known as the Ehrhart polynomial. We show that it is a polynomial in t, where t is the integral dilation parameter. We prove the Ehrhart-Macdonald reciprocity law for these tetrahedra, relating the Ehrhart polynomials of the interior and the closure of the tetrahedra. To illustrate our method, we compute the Ehrhart coefficient for codimension 2. Finally, we show how our ideas can be used to compute the Ehrhart polynomial for an arbitrary convex lattice polytope.

The Reciprocity Law for Dedekind Sums via the constant Ehrhart coefficient
Published in American Mathematical Monthly 106, no. 5 (1999), 459--462 • View Publication • BIB
We obtain a new motivated proof of the reciprocity law for Dedekind sums by computing the constant coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial for a rectangular triangle in two ways. On the one hand, the constant term is the Euler characteristic, and on the other hand it is given by a cotangent Laurent expansion.

The Ehrhart polynomial of the Birkhoff polytope
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry 30, no. 4 (2003), 623-637 • View Publication • BIB
The n'th Birkhoff polytope is the set of all doubly stochastic n-by-n matrices, that is, those matrices with nonnegative real coefficients in which every row and column sums to one. A wide open problem concerns the volumes of these polytopes, which have been known for n up to 8. We present a new, complex-analytic way to compute the Ehrhart polynomial of the Birkhoff polytope, that is, the function counting the integer points in the dilated polytope. One reason to be interested in this counting function is that the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial is--up to a trivial factor--the volume of the polytope. We implemented our methods in form of a computer program, which yielded the Ehrhart polynomial (and hence the volume) of the ninth Birkhoff polytope.

Residues formulae for volumes and Ehrhart polynomials of convex polytopes
In these notes, we explain residue formulae for volumes of convex polytopes, and for Ehrahrt polynomials based on the notion of total residue. We apply this method to the computation of the volume of the Chan-Robbins polytope. The final computation is based on a total residue formula for the system $A_n$, similar to Morris identity. For flow polytopes, a formula of change of variables in total residues leads to a "nice formula" for Ehrhart polynomials in function of mixed volumes. We apply it to Pitman-Stanley polytope.

Universal Counting of Lattice Points in Polytopes
Given a lattice polytope $P$ (with underlying lattice $\lo$), the universal counting function $\uu_P(\lo')=|P\cap \lo'|$ is defined on all lattices $\lo'$ containing $\lo$. Motivated by questions concerning lattice polytopes and the Ehrhart polynomial, we study the equation $\uu_P=\uu_Q$.

On the volume of a certain polytope
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let n >= 2 be an integer and consider the set T_n of n by n permutation matrices pi for which pi_{ij}=0 for j>=i+2. In this paper we study the convex hull of T_n, which we denote by P_n. P_n is a polytope of dimension binom{n}{2}. Our main purpose is to provide evidence for the following conjecture concerning its volume. Let v_n denote the minimum volume of a simplex with vertices in the affine lattice spanned by T_n. Then the volume of P_n is v_n times the product for i varying from 0 to n-2 of frac{1}{i+1} binom{2i}{i}. That is, P_n is the product of v_n and the first n-1 Catalan numbers. We also give a related result on the Ehrhart polynomial of P_n.

Characteristic and Ehrhart polynomials
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 7 (1998), 115-126 • View Publication • BIB
Let A be a subspace arrangement and let chi(A,t) be the characteristic polynomial of its intersection lattice L(A). We show that if the subspaces in A are taken from L(B_n), where B_n is the type B Weyl arrangement, then chi(A,t) counts a certain set of lattice points. One can use this result to study the partial factorization of chi(A,t) over the integers and the coefficients of its expansion in various bases for the polynomial ring R[t]. Next we prove that the characteristic polynomial of any Weyl hyperplane arrangement can be expressed in terms of an Ehrhart quasi-polynomial for its affine Weyl chamber. Note that our first result deals with all subspace arrangements embedded in B_n while the second deals with all finite Weyl groups but only their hyperplane arrangements.
