Evaluating the generalized Buchshtab function and revisiting the variance of the distribution of the smallest components of combinatorial objects
Let $n\geq 1$ and $X_{n}$ be the random variable representing the size of the smallest component of a random combinatorial object made of $n$ elements. A combinatorial object could be a permutation, a monic polynomial over a finite field, a surjective map, a graph, and so on. By a random combinatorial object, we mean a combinatorial object that is chosen uniformly at random among all possible combinatorial objects of size $n$. It is understood that a component of a permutation is a cycle, an irreducible factor for a monic polynomial, a connected component for a graph, etc. Combinatorial objects are categorized into parametric classes. In this article, we focus on the exp-log class with parameter $K=1$ (permutations, derangements, polynomials over finite field, etc.) and $K=1/2$ (surjective maps, $2$-regular graphs, etc.) The generalized Buchstab function $Ω_{K}$ plays an important role in evaluating probabilistic and statistical quantities. For $K=1$, Theorem $5$ from \cite{PanRic_2001_small_explog} stipulates that $\mathrm{Var}(X_{n})=C(n+O(n^{-ε}))$ for some $ε>0$ and sufficiently large $n$. We revisit the evaluation of $C=1.3070\ldots$ using different methods: analytic estimation using tools from complex analysis, numerical integration using Taylor expansions, and computation of the exact distributions for $n\leq 4000$ using the recursive nature of the counting problem. In general for any $K$, Theorem $1.1$ from \cite{BenMasPanRic_2003} connects the quantity $1/Ω_{K}(x)$ for $x\geq 1$ with the asymptotic proportion of $n$-objects with large smallest components. We show how the coefficients of the Taylor expansion of $Ω_{K}(x)$ for $\lfloor x\rfloor \leq x < \lfloor x\rfloor+1$ depends on those for $\lfloor x\rfloor-1 \leq x-1 < \lfloor x\rfloor$. We use this family of coefficients to evaluate $Ω_{K}(x)$.

Counting Deranged Matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathrm{pm}(G)$ denote the number of perfect matchings of a graph $G$, and let $K_{r\times 2n/r}$ denote the complete $r$-partite graph where each part has size $2n/r$. Johnson, Kayll, and Palmer conjectured that for any perfect matching $M$ of $K_{r\times 2n/r}$, we have for $2n$ divisible by $r$ \[\frac{\mathrm{pm}(K_{r\times 2n/r}-M)}{\mathrm{pm}(K_{r\times 2n/r})}\sim e^{-r/(2r-2)}.\] This conjecture can be viewed as a common generalization of counting the number of derangements on $n$ letters, and of counting the number of deranged matchings of $K_{2n}$. We prove this conjecture. In fact, we prove the stronger result that if $R$ is a uniformly random perfect matching of $K_{r\times 2n/r}$, then the number of edges that $R$ has in common with $M$ converges to a Poisson distribution with parameter $\frac{r}{2r-2}$.

Ranking and Unranking Restricted Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss efficient methods for unranking derangements and ménage permutations. That is, we will provide an algorithm to efficiently extract the $k$-th earliest such permutation under the lexicographic ordering. We will show that this problem can be reduced to the problem of computing the number of restricted permutations with a given prefix, and then we will use rook theory to solve this counting problem. This has applications to combinatorics, probability, statistics, and modeling.

Terrain-like Graphs and the Median Genocchi Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ is terrain-like if, for any edge pair $\{a,c\},\{b,d\}$ with $a<b<c<d$, the edge $\{a,d\}$ also exists. Terrain-like graphs frequently appear in geometry in the context of visibility graphs. We show that terrain-like graphs are counted by the median Genocchi numbers. To this end, we prove a bijection between terrain-like graphs and Dumont derangements of the second kind.

A bijection between vertices of rank 1 in increasing trees and derangements
We give a combinatorial proof of a recent result of Bóna by constructing a bijection from the set of all neighbors of leaves of increasing trees of size $n$ to the set of derangements of length $n$.

Deranged matchings: proofs and conjectures
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce, and partially resolve, a conjecture that brings a three-centuries-old derangements phenomenon and its much younger two-decades-old analogue under the same umbrella. Through a graph-theoretic lens, a derangement is a perfect matching in the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ with a disjoint perfect matching $M$ removed. Likewise, a deranged matching is a perfect matching in the complete graph $K_{2n}$ minus a perfect matching $M'$. With $\mathrm{pm}(\cdot)$ counting perfect matchings, the elder phenomenon takes the form $\mathrm{pm}(K_{n,n}-M)/\mathrm{pm}(K_{n,n})\to 1/e$ as $n\to\infty$ while its youthful analogue is $\mathrm{pm}(K_{2n}-M')/\mathrm{pm}(K_{2n})\to 1/\sqrt{e}$. These starting graphs are both $2n$-vertex `balanced complete $r$-partite' graphs $K_{r \times {2n}/{r}}$, respectively with $r=2$ and $r=2n$. We conjecture that $\mathrm{pm}(K_{r\times{2n}/r}-M)/\mathrm{pm}(K_{r\times{2n}/r})\sim e^{-r/(2r-2)}$ as $n\to\infty$ and establish several substantive special cases thereof. For just two examples, $r=3$ yields the limit $e^{-3/4}$ while $r=n$ results again in $e^{-1/2}$. Our tools blend combinatorics and analysis in a medley incorporating Inclusion-Exclusion and Tannery's Theorem.

Edge pancyclic derangement graphs
We consider the derangement graph in which the vertices are permutations of $\{ 1,\ldots, n\}$. Two vertices are joined by an edge if the corresponding permutations differ in every position. The derangement graph is known to be Hamiltonian and Hamilton-connected. In this note, we show that the derangement graph is edge pancyclic if $n\ge 4$.

Derangements in wreath products of permutation groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite group $G$ acting on a set $X$ let $δ_k(G,X)$ denote the proportion of elements in $G$ that have exactly $k$ fixed points in $X$. Let $\mathrm{S}_n$ denote the symmetric group acting on $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$. For $A\le\mathrm{S}_m$ and $B\le\mathrm{S}_n$, the permutational wreath product $A\wr B$ has two natural actions and we give formulas for both, $δ_k(A\wr B,[m]{\times}[n])$ and $δ_k(A\wr B,[m]^{[n]})$. We prove that for $k=0$ the values of these proportions are dense in the intervals $[δ_0(B,[n]),1]$ and $[δ_0(A,[m]),1]$. Among further result, we provide estimates for $δ_0(G,[m]^{[n]})$ for subgroups $G\leq \mathrm{S}_m\wr\mathrm{S}_n$ containing $\mathrm{A}_m^{[n]}$.

Counting derangements with signed right-to-left minima and excedances
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently Alexandersson and Getachew proved some multivariate generalizations of a formula for enumerating signed excedances in derangements. In this paper we first relate their work to a recent continued fraction for permutations and confirm some of their observations. Our second main result is two refinements of their multivariate identities, which clearly explain the meaning of each term in their main formulas. We also explore some similar formulas for permutations of type B.

Invariant Theory for the free left-regular band and a q-analogue
Published in Pacific J. Math. 322 (2023) 251-280 • View Publication • BIB
We examine from an invariant theory viewpoint the monoid algebras for two monoids having large symmetry groups. The first monoid is the free left-regular band on $n$ letters, defined on the set of all injective words, that is, the words with at most one occurrence of each letter. This monoid carries the action of the symmetric group. The second monoid is one of its $q$-analogues, considered by K. Brown, carrying an action of the finite general linear group. In both cases, we show that the invariant subalgebras are semisimple commutative algebras, and characterize them using Stirling and $q$-Stirling numbers. We then use results from the theory of random walks and random-to-top shuffling to decompose the entire monoid algebra into irreducibles, simultaneously as a module over the invariant ring and as a group representation. Our irreducible decompositions are described in terms of derangement symmetric functions introduced by Désarménien and Wachs.

Proof of a conjecture involving derangements and roots of unity
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $n>1$ be an odd integer. For any primitive $n$-th root $ζ$ of unity in the complex field. Via the Engenvector-eigenvalue Identity, we show that $$\sum_{τ\in D(n-1)}\mathrm{sign}(τ)\prod_{j=1}^{n-1}\frac{1+ζ^{j-τ(j)}}{1-ζ^{j-τ(j)}} =(-1)^{\frac{n-1}{2}}\frac{((n-2)!!)^2}{n}, $$ where $D(n-1)$ is the set of all derangements of $1,\ldots,n-1$. This confirms a previous conjecture of Z.-W. Sun. Moreover, for each $δ=0,1$ we determine the value of $\det[x+m_{jk}]_{1\le j,k\le n}$ completely, where $$m_{jk}=\begin{cases}(1+ζ^{j-k})/(1-ζ^{j-k})&\text{if}\ j\not=k,\\δ&\text{if}\ j=k. \end{cases}$$

Conditional Probability of Derangements and Fixed Points
The probability that a random permutation in $S_n$ is a derangement is well known to be $\displaystyle\sum\limits_{j=0}^n (-1)^j \frac{1}{j!}$. In this paper, we consider the conditional probability that the $(k+1)^{st}$ point is fixed, given there are no fixed points in the first $k$ points. We prove that when $n \neq 3$ and $k \neq 1$, this probability is a decreasing function of both $k$ and $n$. Furthermore, it is proved that this conditional probability is well approximated by $\frac{1}{n} - \frac{k}{n^2(n-1)}$. Similar results are also obtained about the more general conditional probability that the $(k+1)^{st}$ point is fixed, given that there are exactly $d$ fixed points in the first $k$ points.
On f-Derangements and Decomposing Bipartite Graphs into Paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $f: \{1, ..., n\} \rightarrow \{1, ..., n\}$ be a function (not necessarily one-to-one). An $f-derangement$ is a permutation $ g:\{1,...,n\} \rightarrow \{1,...,n\}$ such that $g(i) \neq f(i)$ for each $ i = 1, ..., n$. When $f$ is itself a permutation, this is a standard derangement. We examine properties of f-derangements, and show that when we fix the maximum number of preimages for any item under $f$, the fraction of permutations that are f-derangements tends to $ 1/e$ for large $n$, regardless of the choice of $f$. We then use this result to analyze a heuristic method to decompose bipartite graphs into paths of length 5

Expected value of letters of permutations with a given number of $k$-cycles
In this paper, we study permutations $π\in S_n$ with exactly $m$ transpositions. In particular, we are interested in the expected value of $π(1)$ when such permutations are chosen uniformly at random. When $n$ is even, this expected value is approximated closely by $(n+1)/2$, with an error term that is related to the number isometries of the $(n/2-m)$-dimensional hypercube that move every face. Furthermore, when $k \mid n$, this construction generalizes to allow us to compute the expected value of $π(1)$ for permutations with exactly $m$ $k$-cycles. In this case, the expected value has an error term which is related instead to the number derangements of the generalized symmetric group $S(k,n/k-m)$. When $k$ does not divide $n$, the expected value of $π(1)$ is precisely $(n+1)/2$. Indirectly, this suggests the existence of a reversible algorithm to insert a letter into a permutation which preserves the number of $k$-cycles, which we construct.
Erdős-Ko-Rado results for the general linear group, the special linear group and the affine general linear group
In this paper, we show that both the general linear group $\gl{q}$ and the special linear group $\slg{q}$ have both the EKR property and the EKR-module property. This is done using an algebraic method; a weighted adjacency matrix for the derangement graph for the group is found and Hoffman's ratio bound is applied to this matrix. We also consider the group $\agl{q}$ and the 2-intersecting sets in $\PGL(2,q)$.

Backward Touchard congruence
Published • View Publication • BIB
The celebrated Touchard congruence states that $B_{n+p}B_n+B_{n+1}$ modulo $p$, where $p$ is a prime number and $B_n$ denotes the Bell number. In this paper we study divisibility properties of $B_{n-p}$ and their generalizations involving higher powers of $p$ as well as the $r$-Bell numbers. In particular, we show a closely relation of the considered problem to the Sun-Zagier congruence, which is additionally improved by deriving \mbox{a new} relation between $r$-Bell and derangement numbers. Finally, we conclude some results on the period of the Bell numbers modulo $p$.

Exotic series with Bernoulli, harmonic, Catalan, and Stirling numbers
In this paper, we present a formula for generating various exotic series in the spirit of Ovidiu Furdui and Alina Sintamarian. Our new series (evaluated in closed form) involve Bernoulli, harmonic, and Catalan numbers. Also Stirling numbers of the second kind, other special numbers, and exponential polynomials. The results include series identities with Laguerre polynomials and derangement polynomials.

Automatic Counting of Generalized Latin Rectangles and Trapezoids
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this case study in ``fully automated enumeration'', we illustrate how to take full advantage of symbolic computation by developing (what we call) `symbolic-dynamical-programming' algorithms for computing many terms of `hard to compute sequences', namely the number of Latin trapezoids, generalized derangements, and generalized three-rowed Latin rectangles. At the end we also sketch the proof of a generalization of Ira Gessel's 1987 theorem that says that for any number of rows, k, the number of Latin rectangles with k rows and n columns is P-recursive in n. Our algorithms are fully implemented in Maple, and generated quite a few terms of such sequences.
On maximum intersecting sets in direct and wreath product of groups
For a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $V$, a subset $I$ of $G$ is said to be an intersecting set if for every pair of elements $g,h\in I$ there exists $v \in V$ such that $g(v) = h(v)$. The intersection density $ρ(G)$ of a transitive permutation group $G$ is the maximum value of the quotient $|I|/|G_v|$ where $G_v$ is a stabilizer of a point $v\in V$ and $I$ runs over all intersecting sets in $G$. If $G_v$ is the largest intersecting set in $G$ then $G$ is said to have the Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR)-property, and moreover, $G$ has the strict-EKR-property if every intersecting set of maximum size in $G$ is a coset of a point stabilizer. Intersecting sets in $G$ coincide with independent sets in the so-called derangement graph $Γ_G$, defined as the Cayley graph on $G$ with connection set consisting of all derangements, that is, fixed-point free elements of $G$. In this paper a conjecture regarding the existence of transitive permutation groups whose derangement graphs are complete multipartite graphs, posed by Meagher, Razafimahatratra and Spiga in [J.Combin. Theory Ser. A 180 (2021), 105390], is proved. The proof uses direct product of groups. Questions regarding maximum intersecting sets in direct and wreath products of groups and the (strict)-EKR-property of these group products are also investigated. In addition, some errors appearing in the literature on this topic are corrected.
