Factorization norms and Zarankiewicz problems
The $γ_2$-norm of Boolean matrices plays an important role in communication complexity and discrepancy theory. In this paper, we study combinatorial properties of this norm, and provide new applications, involving Zarankiewicz type problems. We show that if $M$ is an $m\times n$ Boolean matrix such that $γ_2(M)<γ$ and $M$ contains no $t\times t$ all-ones submatrix, then $M$ contains $O_{γ,t}(m+n)$ one entries. In other words, graphs of bounded $γ_2$-norm are degree bounded. This addresses a conjecture of Hambardzumyan, Hatami, and Hatami for locally sparse matrices. We prove that if $G$ is a $K_{t,t}$-free incidence graph of $n$ points and $n$ homothets of a polytope $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, then the average degree of $G$ is $O_{d,P}(t(\log n)^{O(d)})$. This is sharp up the $O(.)$ notations. In particular, we prove a more general result on semilinear graphs, which greatly strengthens the work of Basit, Chernikov, Starchenko, Tao, and Tran.

Toroidal graphs without $K_{5}^{-}$ and 6-cycles
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 347 (2024) 114076 • View Publication • BIB
Cai et al.\ proved that a toroidal graph $G$ without $6$-cycles is $5$-choosable, and proposed the conjecture that $\textsf{ch}(G) = 5$ if and only if $G$ contains a $K_{5}$ [J. Graph Theory 65 (2010) 1--15], where $\textsf{ch}(G)$ is the choice number of $G$. However, Choi later disproved this conjecture, and proved that toroidal graphs without $K_{5}^{-}$ (a $K_{5}$ missing one edge) and $6$-cycles are $4$-choosable [J. Graph Theory 85 (2017) 172--186]. In this paper, we provide a structural description, for toroidal graphs without $K_{5}^{-}$ and $6$-cycles. Using this structural description, we strengthen Choi's result in two ways: (I) we prove that such graphs have weak degeneracy at most three (nearly $3$-degenerate), and hence their DP-paint numbers and DP-chromatic numbers are at most four; (II) we prove that such graphs have Alon-Tarsi numbers at most $4$. Furthermore, all of our results are sharp in some sense.
Polycyclic Geometric Realizations of the Gray Configuration
The Gray configuration is a (27_3) configuration which typically is realized as the points and lines of the 3 x 3 x 3 integer lattice. It occurs as a member of an infinite family of configurations defined by Bouwer in 1972. Since their discovery, both the Gray configuration and its Levi graph (i.e., its point-line incidence graph) have been the subject of intensive study. Its automorphism group contains cyclic subgroups isomorphic to Z_3 and Z_9, so it is natural to ask whether the Gray configuration can be realized in the plane with any of the corresponding rotational symmetry. In this paper, we show that there are two distinct polycyclic realizations with Z_3 symmetry. In contrast, the only geometric polycyclic realization with straight lines and Z_9 symmetry is only a "weak" realization, with extra unwanted incidences (in particular, the realization is actually a (27_4) configuration).

Infinitely many accumulation points of codegree Turán densities
The codegree Turán density $γ(F)$ of a $k$-graph $F$ is the smallest $γ\in[0,1)$ such that every $k$-graph $H$ with $δ_{k-1}(H)\geq(γ+o(1))\vert V(H)\vert$ contains a copy of $F$. We prove that for all $k,r\in\mathbb{N}$ with $k\geq3$, $\frac{r-1}{r}$ is an accumulation point of $Γ^{(k)}=\{γ(F):F\text{ is a }k\text{-graph}\}$. This makes progress on a problem posed by Mubayi and Zhao.
Quotients of skew polynomial rings: new constructions of division algebras and MRD codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We achieve new results on skew polynomial rings and their quotients, including the first explicit example of a skew polynomial ring where the ratio of the degree of a skew polynomial to the degree of its bound is not extremal. These methods lead to the construction of new (not necessarily associative) division algebras and maximum rank distance (MRD) codes over both finite and infinite division rings. In particular, we construct new non-associative division algebras whose right nucleus is a central simple algebra having degree greater than 1. Over finite fields, we obtain new semifields and MRD codes for infinitely many choices of parameters. These families extend and contain many of the best previously known constructions.

On a theorem of François Robert
A well-known theorem by François Robert expresses the degenerated character of a synchronous Boolean finite dynamical system, in the case where the associated regulatory graph does not contain any circuit: all states of the system go towards a single fixed point. We present a large family of updating modes of Boolean models with the same particularity.

Fan's condition for completely independent spanning trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Spanning trees $T_1,T_2, \dots,T_k$ of $G$ are $k$ completely independent spanning trees if, for any two vertices $u,v\in V(G)$, the paths from $u$ to $v$ in these $k$ trees are pairwise edge-disjoint and internal vertex-disjoint. Hasunuma proved that determining whether a graph contains $k$ completely independent spanning trees is NP-complete, even for $k = 2$. Araki posed the question of whether certain known sufficient conditions for hamiltonian cycles are also also guarantee two completely independent spanning trees? In this paper, we affirmatively answer this question for the Fan-type condition. Precisely, we proved that if $G$ is a connected graph such that each pair of vertices at distance 2 has degree sum at least $|V(G)|$, then $G$ has two completely independent spanning trees.

Forbidden configurations and dominating bicliques in undirected 2-quasi best match graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
2-quasi best match graphs (2-qBMGs) are directed graphs that capture a notion of close relatedness in phylogenetics. Here, we investigate the undirected underlying graph of a 2-qBMG (un-2qBMG) and show that they contain neither a path $P_l$ nor a cycle $C_l$ of length $l\geq 6$ as an induced subgraph. This property guarantees the existence of specific vertex decompositions with dominating bicliques that provide further insights into their structure.

On $\mathcal{F}$-multicolor Turán number of hypergraph graphs
The Ruzsa-Szemerédi $(6,3)$-problem can be equivalently stated as determining the maximum number of edge-disjoint triangles on $n$ vertices such that no triangle is formed by edges from three distinct triangle-copies. Gowers and Janzer extended this problem by establishing an analogous result for complete graphs. A natural generalization of the two results, first introduced by Imolay, Karl, Nazy and Váli, asks for the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of a graph $F$ on $n$ vertices such that no copy of $G$ is formed by edges originating from distinct $F$-copies. This maximum number, denoted by $ex_F(n,G)$, is called the {\em $F$-multicolor Turán number} of $G$. This paper focuses on the setting of uniform hypergraphs. We first prove that for $k$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{F}$, $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})=o(n^k)$ if and only if there exists a homomorphism from $\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathcal{F}$. For degenerate case, we show that $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})=n^{k-o(1)}$ whenever $\mathcal{G}$ contains a $k$-uniform tight triangle. These results extend previous results. We further establish corresponding supersaturation and blowup statements. In the non-degenerate setting, we derive matching lower and upper bounds for $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$ to fail to attain the upper bound, under the assumption that the extremal graphs for $\mathcal{G}$ are stable. As an application, we refine a result due to Imolay, Karl, Nazy and Váli. Furthermore, we completely characterize $\mathcal{F}$ for which $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$ does not attain the upper bound when $\mathcal{G}$ is one of the three special intersecting graphs: Fano plane, extended triangle and $r$-book of $r$-edges with $r=3,4$.

Hamiltonian Cycles in Signed and Multisigned Complete Graphs
A signed complete graph contains both positive and negative Hamiltonian cycles if and only if it also contains both positive and negative triangles. Otherwise, all Hamiltonian cycles are negative if and only if all triangles are negative and n is odd, while all Hamiltonian cycles are positive if and only if all triangles are negative and n is even, or all triangles are positive. Extending these results to multisigned complete graphs, we prove that such a graph contains at least two Hamiltonian cycles with different multisigns if and only if it contains at least two triangles with different multisigns.

Chords of longest cycles passing through a specified small set
Published • View Publication • BIB
A long-standing conjecture of Thomassen says that every longest cycle of a $3$-connected graph has a chord. Thomassen (2018) proved that if $G$ is $2$-connected and cubic, then any longest cycle must have a chord. He also showed that if $G$ is a $3$-connected graph with minimum degree at least $4$, then some of the longest cycles in $G$ must have a chord. Zhang (1987) proved that if $G$ is a $3$-connected simple planar graph which is 3-regular or has minimum degree at least $4$, then every longest cycle of $G$ must have a chord. Recently, Li and Liu showed that if $G$ is a $2$-connected cubic graph and $x, y$ are two distinct vertices of $G$, then every longest $(x,y)$-path of $G$ contains at least one internal vertex whose neighbors are all in the path. In this paper, we study chords of longest cycles passing through a specified small set and generalize Thomassen's and Zhang's above results by proving the following results. (i) Let $G$ be a $2$-connected cubic graph and $S$ be a specified set consisting of an edge plus a vertex. Then every longest cycle of $G$ containing $S$ must have a chord. (ii) Let $G$ be a $3$-connected graph with minimum degree at least $4$ and $e$ be a specified edge of $G$. Then some longest cycle of $G$ containing $e$ must have a chord. (iii) Let $G$ be a $3$-connected planar graph with minimum degree at least $4$. Suppose $S$ is a specified set consisting of either three vertices or an edge plus a vertex. Then every longest cycle of $G$ containing $S$ must have a chord. We also extend the above-mentioned result of Li and Liu for $2$-connected cubic graphs.
Bipartite graphs with the double Hall property
Published • View Publication • BIB
The super-neighborhood of a vertex set $A$ in a graph $G$, denoted by $Λ^2(A)$, is the set of vertices adjacent to at least two vertices in $A$. We say that a bipartite graph $G=(X, Y)$ with $|X| \geq 2$ satisfies the double Hall property (with respect to $X$) if $|Λ^2(A)| \geq |A|$ for any subset $A \subseteq X$ with $|A| \geq 2$. Kostochka et al. first conjectured that if a bipartite graph $G=(X, Y)$ satisfies a slightly weaker version of the double Hall property, then $G$ contains a cycle that covers all vertices of $X$. They verified their conjecture for $|X| \leq 6$. In this paper, we extend their result to $|X| = 7$. Later, Salia conjectured that every bipartite graph satisfying the double Hall property has a cycle covering all vertices of $X$. We show that Salia's conjecture is almost equivalent to a much weaker conjecture requiring vertices in $Y$ to have high degrees. By extending a result of Barát et al., we also show that Salia's conjecture holds for some graphs where the vertices of $Y$ have degree either $2$ or very high. Finally, we establish a lower bound for the maximum degree of graphs satisfying the double Hall property and present deterministic and probabilistic constructions of such graphs that approach this bound.
Totally odd immersions of complete graphs in graph products
For a graph $G$, let $im(G)$ denote the maximum integer $t$ such that $G$ contains $K_t$ as an immersion. A recent paper of Collins, Heenehan, and McDonald (2023) studied the behaviour of this parameter under graph products, asking how large can $im(G\ast H)$ be in terms of $im(G)$ and $im(H)$, when $\ast$ is one of the four standard graph products. We consider a similar question for the parameter $toi(G)$ which denotes the maximum integer $t$ such that $G$ contains $K_t$ as a totally odd immersion. As an application, we obtain that no minimum counterexample to the immersion-analogue of the Odd Hadwiger Conjecture can be obtained from the Cartesian, direct (tensor), lexicographic or strong product of graphs.
Intersecting Families of Spanning Trees
A family $\mathcal{F}$ of spanning trees of the complete graph on $n$ vertices $K_n$ is \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two members have a forest on $t$ edges in common. We prove an Erdős--Ko--Rado result for $t$-intersecting families of spanning trees of $K_n$. In particular, we show there exists a constant $C > 0$ such that for all $n \geq C (\log n) t$ the largest $t$-intersecting families are the families consisting of all trees that contain a fixed set of $t$ disjoint edges (as well as the stars on $n$ vertices for $t = 1$). The proof uses the spread approximation technique in conjunction with the Lopsided Lovász Local Lemma.
Abstract questionnaires and FS-decision digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A questionnaire is a sequence of multiple choice questions aiming to collect data on a population. We define an abstract questionnaire as an ordered pair $(N,{\cal M})$, where $N$ is a positive integer and ${\cal M}=(m_0,m_1,\ldots,m_{N-1})$ is an $N$-tuple of positive integers, with $m_i$, for $i \in \{0, 1, \ldots, N-1 \}$, as the number of possible answers to question $i$. An abstract questionnaire may be endowed with a skip-list (which tells us which questions to skip based on the sequence of answers to the earlier questions) and a flag-set (which tells us which sequences of answers are of special interest). An FS-decision tree is a decision tree of an abstract questionnaire that also incorporates the information contained in the skip-list and flag-set. The main objective of this paper is to represent the abstract questionnaire using a directed graph, which we call an FS-decision digraph, that contains the full information of an FS-decision tree, but is in general much more concise. We present an algorithm for constructing a fully reduced FS-decision digraph, and develop the theory that supports it. In addition, we show how to generate all possible orderings of the questions in an abstract questionnaire that respect a given precedence relation.

Large sum-free subsets of sets of integers via $L^1$-estimates for trigonometric series
A set $B$ is said to be \emph{sum-free} if there are no $x,y,z\in B$ with $x+y=z$. We show that there exists a constant $c>0$ such that any set $A$ of $n$ integers contains a sum-free subset $A'$ of size $|A'|\geqslant n/3+c\log \log n$. This answers a longstanding problem in additive combinatorics, originally due to Erdős.

Spanning trees of claw-free graphs with few leaves and branch vertices
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 27:3, Graph Theory (November 20, 2025) dmtcs:15247 • View Publication • BIB
Let $T$ be a tree. A vertex of degree one is a \emph{leaf} of $T$ and a vertex of degree at least three is a \emph{branch vertex} of $T$. A graph is said to be claw-free if it does not contain $K_{1,3}$ as an induced subgraph. In this paper, we study the spanning trees with a bounded number of leaves and branch vertices of claw-free graphs. Applying the main results, we also give some improvements of previous results on the spanning trees with few branch vertices for the case of claw-free graphs.

Cycles and paths through specified vertices in graphs with a given clique number
Published • View Publication • BIB
B. Bollobás and G. Brightwell and independently R. Shi proved the existence of a cycle through all vertices whose degrees at least $\frac{n}{2}$ in any $2$-connected graph of order $n$. Motivated by this result, we prove the existence of a cycle through all vertices whose degrees at least $n-ω$ in any $2$-connected graph $G$ of order $n$ with clique number $ω$ unless $G$ is a specific graph. Moreover, we show that for any pair of vertices whose degrees are at least $n-ω+1$ in a graph $G$ of order $n$ with clique number $ω$, there exists a path joining them which contains all vertices of degree at least $n-ω+1$ unless $G$ belongs to certain graph classes. In doing so, we prove the existence of a $(u,v)$-path through all vertices whose degrees at least $\frac{n+1}{2}$ in any graph of order $n$, where $u,v$ are two distinct vertices of degree at least $\frac{n+1}{2}$.

On generalizing the Van der Waerden theorem to some symmetric functions
Let $n,m$ be positive integers and $c \in \mathbb{Z}_n$, where $\mathbb{Z}_n$ is the ring of integers modulo $n$. We almost complete providing the answer to the following problem, partially solved by N. Alon. Does any infinite sequence over $\mathbb{Z}_n$ contain $m$ same-length consecutive blocks $B_1, \ldots, B_m$ s.t. $\sum B_j + c \prod B_j = 0$ for every $j=1,\ldots,m$ (where $\sum B$ and $\prod B$ denote, respectively, the sum and the product of the elements in block $B$)? In the case of $c=0$, this problem is equivalent to the Van der Waerden theorem. After investigating $B \mapsto \sum B + c\prod B$, we provide other examples of generalizing the Van der Waerden theorem.

Congruences for hook lengths of partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Amdeberhan et al. proved congruences for the number of hooks of fixed even length among the set of self-conjugate partitions of an integer $n$, therefore answering positively a conjecture raised by Ballantine et al.. In this paper, we show how these congruences can be immediately derived and generalized from an addition theorem for self-conjugate partitions proved by the second author. We also recall how the addition theorem proved before by Han and Ji can be used to derive similar congruences for the whole set of partitions, which are originally due to Bessenrodt, and Bacher and Manivel. Finally, we extend such congruences to the set of $z$-asymmetric partitions defined by Ayyer and Kumari, by proving an addition-multiplication theorem for these partitions. Among other things, this contains as special cases the congruences for the number of hook lengths for the self-conjugate and the so-called doubled distinct partitions.
