Erdos-Hajnal-type theorems in hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Erdos-Hajnal conjecture states that if a graph on n vertices is H-free, that is, it does not contain an induced copy of a given graph H, then it must contain either a clique or an independent set of size n^{d(H)}, where d(H) > 0 depends only on the graph H. Except for a few special cases, this conjecture remains wide open. However, it is known that a H-free graph must contain a complete or empty bipartite graph with parts of polynomial size. We prove an analogue of this result for 3-uniform hypergraphs, showing that if a 3-uniform hypergraph on n vertices is H-free, for any given H, then it must contain a complete or empty tripartite subgraph with parts of order c(log n)^{1/2 + d(H)}, where d(H) > 0 depends only on H. This improves on the bound of c(log n)^{1/2}, which holds in all 3-uniform hypergraphs, and, up to the value of the constant d(H), is best possible. We also prove that, for k > 3, no analogue of the standard Erdos-Hajnal conjecture can hold in k-uniform hypergraphs. That is, there are k-uniform hypergraphs H and sequences of H-free hypergraphs which do not contain cliques or independent sets of size appreciably larger than one would normally expect.

Path-search in the pyramid and in other graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We are given an acyclic directed graph with one source, and a subset of its edges which contains exactly one outgoing edge for every non-sink vertex. These edges determine a unique path from the source to a sink. We can think of it as a switch in every vertex, which determines which way the water arriving to that vertex flows further. We are interested in determining either the sink the flow arrives, or the whole path, with as few questions as possible. The questions we can ask correspond to the vertices of the graph, and the answer describes the switch, i.e. tells which outgoing edge is in our given subset. Originally the problem was proposed by Soren Riis (who posed the question for pyramid graphs) in the following more general form. We are given a natural number k, and k questions can be asked in a round. The goal is to minimize the number of rounds. We completely solve this problem for complete t-ary trees. Also, for pyramid graphs we present some non-trivial partial results.

Isomorph-free generation of 2-connected graphs with applications
Many interesting graph families contain only 2-connected graphs, which have ear decompositions. We develop a technique to generate families of unlabeled 2-connected graphs using ear augmentations and apply this technique to two problems. In the first application, we search for uniquely K_r-saturated graphs and find the list of uniquely K_4-saturated graphs on at most 12 vertices, supporting current conjectures for this problem. In the second application, we verifying the Edge Reconstruction Conjecture for all 2-connected graphs on at most 12 vertices. This technique can be easily extended to more problems concerning 2-connected graphs.

Tight bounds on the maximum size of a set of permutations with bounded VC-dimension
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 119 (7), 1461-1478 (2012) • View Publication • BIB
The VC-dimension of a family P of n-permutations is the largest integer k such that the set of restrictions of the permutations in P on some k-tuple of positions is the set of all k! permutation patterns. Let r_k(n) be the maximum size of a set of n-permutations with VC-dimension k. Raz showed that r_2(n) grows exponentially in n. We show that r_3(n)=2^Theta(n log(alpha(n))) and for every s >= 4, we have almost tight upper and lower bounds of the form 2^{n poly(alpha(n))}. We also study the maximum number p_k(n) of 1-entries in an n x n (0,1)-matrix with no (k+1)-tuple of columns containing all (k+1)-permutation matrices. We determine that p_3(n) = Theta(n alpha(n)) and that p_s(n) can be bounded by functions of the form n 2^poly(alpha(n)) for every fixed s >= 4. We also show that for every positive s there is a slowly growing function zeta_s(m) (of the form 2^poly(alpha(m)) for every fixed s >= 5) satisfying the following. For all positive integers n and B and every n x n (0,1)-matrix M with zeta_s(n)Bn 1-entries, the rows of M can be partitioned into s intervals so that at least B columns contain at least B 1-entries in each of the intervals.

Pósa's Conjecture for graphs of order at least 2\times 10^8
In 1962 Pósa conjectured that every graph G on n vertices with minimum degree at least 2n/3 contains the square of a hamiltonian cycle. In 1996 Fan and Kierstead proved the path version of Pósa's Conjecture. They also proved that it would suffice to show that G contains the square of a cycle of length greater than 2n/3. Still in 1996, Komlós, Sárközy, and Szemerédi proved Pósa's Conjecture, using the Regularity and Blow-up Lemmas, for graphs of order n > n_0, where n_0 is a very large constant. Here we show without using these lemmas that n_0=2\times 10^8 is sufficient. We are motivated by the recent work of Levitt, Szemerédi and Sárközy, but our methods are based on techniques that were available in the 90's.

On topological properties of families of finite sets
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Volume 119, Issue 5, July 2012, Pages 1066-1077 • Search Publication
We present results about the Cantor-Bendixson index of some subspaces of a uniform family F of finite subsets of natural numbers with respect to the lexicographic order topology. As a corollary of our results we get that for any omega-uniform family F the restriction F|M is homeomorphic to F iff M contains intervals of arbitrary length of consecutive integers. We show the connection of these results with a topological partition problem of uniform families.

Spectrum of permanent's values and its extremal magnitudes in $Λ_n^3$ and $Λ_n(α,β,γ)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Λ_n^k$ denote the class of $(0,1)$ square matrices containing in each row and in each column exactly $k$ 1's. The minimal value of $k,$ for which the behavior of the permanent in $Λ_n^k$ is not quite studied, is $k=3.$ We give a simple algorithm for calculation upper magnitudes of permanent in $Λ_n^3$ and consider some extremal problems in a generalized class $Λ_n(α,β,γ),$ the matrices of which contain in each row and in each column nonzero elements $α,β,γ$ and $n-3$ zeros.
Bivariate identities for values of the Hurwitz zeta function and supercongruences
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 18 (2012), no. 2, Research Paper 35, 30pp • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove a new identity for values of the Hurwitz zeta function which contains as particular cases Koecher's identity for odd zeta values, the Bailey-Borwein-Bradley identity for even zeta values and many other interesting formulas related to values of the Hurwitz zeta function. We also get an extension of the bivariate identity of Cohen to values of the Hurwitz zeta function. The main tool we use here is a construction of new Markov-WZ pairs. As application of our results, we prove several conjectures on supercongruences proposed by J. Guillera, W. Zudilin, and Z.-W. Sun.

Directed Nowhere Dense Classes of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the concept of shallow directed minors and based on this a new classification of classes of directed graphs which is diametric to existing directed graph decompositions and width measures proposed in the literature. We then study in depth one type of classes of directed graphs which we call nowhere crownful. The classes are very general as they include, on one hand, all classes of directed graphs whose underlying undirected class is nowhere dense, such as planar, bounded-genus, and $H$-minor-free graphs; and on the other hand, also contain classes of high edge density whose underlying class is not nowhere dense. Yet we are able to show that problems such as directed dominating set and many others become fixed-parameter tractable on nowhere crownful classes of directed graphs. This is of particular interest as these problems are not tractable on any existing digraph measure for sparse classes. The algorithmic results are established via proving a structural equivalence of nowhere crownful classes and classes of graphs which are directed uniformly quasi-wide. This rather surprising result is inspired by Nesetril and Ossana de Mendez (2008) and yet a different and more delicate proof is needed, which is a significant part of our contribution.

Hamiltonicity, independence number, and pancyclicity
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph on n vertices is called pancyclic if it contains a cycle of length l for all 3 \le l \le n. In 1972, Erdos proved that if G is a Hamiltonian graph on n > 4k^4 vertices with independence number k, then G is pancyclic. He then suggested that n = Ω(k^2) should already be enough to guarantee pancyclicity. Improving on his and some other later results, we prove that there exists a constant c such that n > ck^{7/3} suffices.

A note on bipartite graph tiling
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bipartite graph tiling was studied by Zhao who gave the best possible minimum degree conditions for a balanced bipartite graph on 2ms vertices to contain m vertex disjoint copies of K_{s,s}. Let s<t be fixed positive integers. Hladký and Schacht gave minimum degree conditions for a balanced bipartite graph on 2m(s+t) vertices to contain m vertex disjoint copies of K_{s,t}. Their results were best possible, except in the case when m is odd and t> 2s+1. We give the best possible minimum degree condition in this case.

Nonnegative k-sums, fractional covers, and probability of small deviations
Published • View Publication • BIB
More than twenty years ago, Manickam, Miklós, and Singhi conjectured that for any integers $n, k$ satisfying $n \geq 4k$, every set of $n$ real numbers with nonnegative sum has at least $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$ $k$-element subsets whose sum is also nonnegative. In this paper we discuss the connection of this problem with matchings and fractional covers of hypergraphs, and with the question of estimating the probability that the sum of nonnegative independent random variables exceeds its expectation by a given amount. Using these connections together with some probabilistic techniques, we verify the conjecture for $n \geq 33k^2$. This substantially improves the best previously known exponential lower bound $n \geq e^{ck \log\log k}$. In addition we prove a tight stability result showing that for every $k$ and all sufficiently large $n$, every set of $n$ reals with a nonnegative sum that does not contain a member whose sum with any other $k-1$ members is nonnegative, contains at least $\binom{n-1}{k-1}+\binom{n-k-1}{k-1}-1$ subsets of cardinality $k$ with nonnegative sum.

Gerechte Designs with Rectangular Regions
Published • View Publication • BIB
A \emph{gerechte framework} is a partition of an $n \times n$ array into $n$ regions of $n$ cells each. A \emph{realization} of a gerechte framework is a latin square of order $n$ with the property that when its cells are partitioned by the framework, each region contains exactly one copy of each symbol. A \emph{gerechte design} is a gerechte framework together with a realization. We investigate gerechte frameworks where each region is a rectangle. It seems plausible that all such frameworks have realizations, and we present some progress towards answering this question. In particular, we show that for all positive integers $s$ and $t$, any gerechte framework where each region is either an $s \times t$ rectangle or a $t\times s$ rectangle is realizable.

The generalized 3-connectivity of Cartesian product graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The generalized connectivity of a graph, which was introduced recently by Chartrand et al., is a generalization of the concept of vertex connectivity. Let $S$ be a nonempty set of vertices of $G$, a collection $\{T_1,T_2,...,T_r\}$ of trees in $G$ is said to be internally disjoint trees connecting $S$ if $E(T_i)\cap E(T_j)=\emptyset$ and $V(T_i)\cap V(T_j)=S$ for any pair of distinct integers $i,j$, where $1\leq i,j\leq r$. For an integer $k$ with $2\leq k\leq n$, the $k$-connectivity $κ_k(G)$ of $G$ is the greatest positive integer $r$ for which $G$ contains at least $r$ internally disjoint trees connecting $S$ for any set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$. Obviously, $κ_2(G)=κ(G)$ is the connectivity of $G$. Sabidussi showed that $κ(G\Box H) \geq κ(G)+κ(H)$ for any two connected graphs $G$ and $H$. In this paper, we first study the 3-connectivity of the Cartesian product of a graph $G$ and a tree $T$, and show that $(i)$ if $κ_3(G)=κ(G)\geq 1$, then $κ_3(G\Box T)\geq κ_3(G)$; $(ii)$ if $1\leq κ_3(G)< κ(G)$, then $κ_3(G\Box T)\geq κ_3(G)+1$. Furthermore, for any two connected graphs $G$ and $H$ with $κ_3(G)\geqκ_3(H)$, if $κ(G)>κ_3(G)$, then $κ_3(G\Box H)\geq κ_3(G)+κ_3(H)$; if $κ(G)=κ_3(G)$, then $κ_3(G\Box H)\geq κ_3(G)+κ_3(H)-1$. Our result could be seen as a generalization of Sabidussi's result. Moreover, all the bounds are sharp.

The Tutte polynomial and the automorphism group of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is said to be $p$-periodic, if the automorphism group $Aut(G)$ contains an element of order $p$ which preserves no edges. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of graph polynomials (Negmai and Tutte) with respect to graph periodicity. In particular, we prove that if $p$ is a prime, then the coefficients of the Tutte polynomial of such a graph satisfy a certain necessary condition. This result is illustrated by an example where the Tutte polynomial is used to rule out the periodicity of the Frucht graph.

Finding a smallest odd hole in a claw-free graph using global structure
Published • View Publication • BIB
A lemma of Fouquet implies that a claw-free graph contains an induced $C_5$, contains no odd hole, or is quasi-line. In this paper we use this result to give an improved shortest-odd-hole algorithm for claw-free graphs by exploiting the structural relationship between line graphs and quasi-line graphs suggested by Chudnovsky and Seymour's structure theorem for quasi-line graphs. Our approach involves reducing the problem to that of finding a shortest odd cycle of length $\geq 5$ in a graph. Our algorithm runs in $O(m^2+n^2\log n)$ time, improving upon Shrem, Stern, and Golumbic's recent $O(nm^2)$ algorithm, which uses a local approach. The best known recognition algorithms for claw-free graphs run in $O(m^{1.69}) \cap O(n^{3.5})$ time, or $O(m^2) \cap O(n^{3.5})$ without fast matrix multiplication.

Arithmetic progressions in sumsets and L^p-almost-periodicity
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove results about the L^p-almost-periodicity of convolutions. One of these follows from a simple but rather general lemma about approximating a sum of functions in L^p, and gives a very short proof of a theorem of Green that if A and B are subsets of {1,...,N} of sizes alpha N and beta N then A+B contains an arithmetic progression of length at least about exp(c (alpha beta log N)^{1/2}). Another almost-periodicity result improves this bound for densities decreasing with N: we show that under the above hypotheses the sumset A+B contains an arithmetic progression of length at least about exp(c (alpha log N/(log(beta^{-1}))^3)^{1/2}).

Combinatorics of embeddings
We offer the following explanation of the statement of the Kuratowski graph planarity criterion and of 6/7 of the statement of the Robertson-Seymour-Thomas intrinsic linking criterion. Let us call a cell complex 'dichotomial' if to every cell there corresponds a unique cell with the complementary set of vertices. Then every dichotomial cell complex is PL homeomorphic to a sphere; there exist precisely two 3-dimensional dichotomial cell complexes, and their 1-skeleta are K_5 and K_{3,3}; and precisely six 4-dimensional ones, and their 1-skeleta all but one graphs of the Petersen family. In higher dimensions n>2, we observe that in order to characterize those compact n-polyhedra that embed in S^{2n} in terms of finitely many "prohibited minors", it suffices to establish finiteness of the list of all (n-1)-connected n-dimensional finite cell complexes that do not embed in S^{2n} yet all their proper subcomplexes and proper cell-like combinatorial quotients embed there. Our main result is that this list contains the n-skeleta of (2n+1)-dimensional dichotomial cell complexes. The 2-skeleta of 5-dimensional dichotomial cell complexes include (apart from the three joins of the i-skeleta of (2i+2)-simplices) at least ten non-simplicial complexes.

Zeckendorf family identities generalized
Philip Matchett Wood and Doron Zeilberger have constructed identities for the Fibonacci numbers $f_n$ of the form $1f_n = f_n$ for all $n \geq 1$; $2f_n = f_{n-2} + f_{n+1}$ for all $n \geq 3$; $3f_n = f_{n-2} + f_{n+2}$ for all $n \geq 3$; $4f_n = f_{n-2} + f_{n} + f_{n+2}$ for all $n \geq 3$; ...; the general identity in this family has the form $kf_n = \sum_{s \in S_k} f_{n+s}$ (for all sufficiently high $n$), where $S_k$ is a finite set of integers that depends only on $k$ and contains no two consecutive integers. These identities are generalized, replacing the left-hand side $kf_n$ by arbitrary sums of the form $f_{n+a_1} + f_{n+a_2} + \cdots + f_{n+a_p}$ for arbitrary integers $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_p$. The resulting theorem is proved using the connection between the Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio.

The phylogeny graphs of doubly partial orders
Published in Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory 33 (2013) 657-664 • View Publication • BIB
The competition graph of a doubly partial order is known to be an interval graph. The CCE graph and the niche graph of a doubly partial order are also known to be interval graphs if the graphs do not contain a cycle of length four and three as an induced subgraph, respectively. Phylogeny graphs are variant of competition graphs. The phylogeny graph $P(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the (simple undirected) graph defined by $V(P(D)):=V(D)$ and $E(P(D)):=\{xy \mid N^+_D(x) \cap N^+_D(y) \neq \emptyset \} \cup \{xy \mid (x,y) \in A(D) \}$, where $N^+_D(x):=\{v \in V(D) \mid (x,v) \in A(D)\}$. In this note, we show that the phylogeny graph of a doubly partial order is an interval graph. We also show that, for any interval graph $G$, there exists an interval graph $\tilde{G}$ such that $\tilde{G}$ contains the graph $G$ as an induced subgraph and that $\tilde{G}$ is the phylogeny graph of a doubly partial order.
