Excluding four-edge paths and their complements
We prove that a graph G contains no induced four-edge path and no induced complement of a four-edge path if and only if G is obtained from five-cycles and split graphs by repeatedly applying the following operations: substitution, split graph unification, and split graph unification in the complement ("split graph unification" is a new class-preserving operation that is introduced in this paper).
Constructing, sampling and counting graphical realizations of restricted degree sequences
Published in PLOS ONE 2015. e0131300 • View Publication • BIB
With the current burst of network theory (especially in connection with social and biological networks) there is a renewed interest on realizations of given degree sequences. In this paper we propose an essentially new degree sequence problem: we want to find graphical realizations of a given degree sequence on labeled vertices, where certain would-be edges are {\em forbidden}. Then we want to sample uniformly and efficiently all these possible realizations. (This problem can be considered as a special case of Tutte's $f$-factor problem, however it has a favorable sampling speed.) We solve this {\em restricted degree sequence} (or RDS for short) problem completely if the forbidden edges form a bipartite graph, which consist of the union of a (not necessarily maximal) 1-factor and a (possible empty) star. Then we show how one can sample the space of all realizations of these RDSs uniformly and efficiently when the degree sequence describes a {\em half-regular} bipartite graph. Our result contains, as special cases, the well-known result of Kannan, Tetali and Vempala on sampling regular bipartite graphs and a recent result of Greenhill on sampling regular directed graphs (so it also provides new proofs of them). The RDS problem descried above is self-reducible, therefore our {\em fully polynomial almost uniform sampler} (a.k.a. FPAUS) on the space of all realizations also provides a {\em fully polynomial randomized approximation scheme} (a.k.a. FPRAS) for approximate counting of all realizations.
Exact algorithms for dominating induced matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Say that an edge of a graph G dominates itself and every other edge adjacent to it. An edge dominating set of a graph G = (V,E) is a subset of edges E' of E which dominates all edges of G. In particular, if every edge of G is dominated by exactly one edge of E' then E' is a dominating induced matching. It is known that not every graph admits a dominating induced matching, while the problem to decide if it does admit is NP-complete. In this paper we consider the problem of finding a minimum weighted dominating induced matching, if any, of a graph with weighted edges. We describe two exact algorithms for general graphs. The algorithms are efficient in the cases where G admits a known vertex dominating set of small size, or when G contains a polynomial number of maximal independent sets.

Fractional Perfect b-Matching Polytopes. I: General Theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
The fractional perfect b-matching polytope of an undirected graph G is the polytope of all assignments of nonnegative real numbers to the edges of G such that the sum of the numbers over all edges incident to any vertex v is a prescribed nonnegative number b_v. General theorems which provide conditions for nonemptiness, give a formula for the dimension, and characterize the vertices, edges and face lattices of such polytopes are obtained. Many of these results are expressed in terms of certain spanning subgraphs of G which are associated with subsets or elements of the polytope. For example, it is shown that an element u of the fractional perfect b-matching polytope of G is a vertex of the polytope if and only if each component of the graph of u either is acyclic or else contains exactly one cycle with that cycle having odd length, where the graph of u is defined to be the spanning subgraph of G whose edges are those at which u is positive.

On expanders from the action of GL(2,Z)
Consider the undirected graph $G_n=(V_n, E_n)$ where $V_n = (Z/nZ)^2$ and $E_n$ contains an edge from $(x,y)$ to $(x+1,y)$, $(x,y+1)$, $(x+y,y)$, and $(x,y+x)$ for every $(x,y) \in V_n$. Gabber and Galil, following Margulis, gave an elementary proof that ${G_n}$ forms an expander family. In this note, we present a somewhat simpler proof of this fact, and demonstrate its utility by isolating a key property of the linear transformations $(x,y) -> (x+y,x), (x,y+x)$ that yields expansion. As an example, consider any invertible, integral matrix $S \in GL_2(Z)$ and let $G^S_n = (V_n, E^S_n)$ where $E^S_n$ contains, for every $(x,y) \in V_n$, an edge from $(x,y)$ to $(x+1,y)$, $(x,y+1)$, $S(x,y)$, and $S^T(x,y)$, where $S^T$ denotes the transpose of $S$. Then {G_n^S} forms an expander family if and only if a related infinite graph has positive Cheeger constant. This latter property turns out to be elementary to analyze and can be used to show that {G_n^S} are expanders precisely when the trace of S is non-zero and S is not equal to its transpose. We also present some other generalizations.

Central sets and substitutive dynamical systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we establish a new connection between central sets and the strong coincidence conjecture for fixed points of irreducible primitive substitutions of Pisot type. Central sets, first introduced by Furstenberg using notions from topological dynamics, constitute a special class of subsets of $\nats$ possessing strong combinatorial properties: Each central set contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions, and solutions to all partition regular systems of homogeneous linear equations. We give an equivalent reformulation of the strong coincidence condition in terms of central sets and minimal idempotent ultrafilters in the Stone-Čech compactification $β\nats .$ This provides a new arithmetical approach to an outstanding conjecture in tiling theory, the Pisot substitution conjecture. The results in this paper rely on interactions between different areas of mathematics, some of which had not previously been directly linked: They include the general theory of combinatorics on words, abstract numeration systems, tilings, topological dynamics and the algebraic/topological properties of Stone-Čech compactification of $\nats.$
Central sets generated by uniformly recurrent words
Published • View Publication • BIB
A subset $A$ of $\nats$ is called an IP-set if $A$ contains all finite sums of distinct terms of some infinite sequence $(x_n)_{n\in \nats} $ of natural numbers. Central sets, first introduced by Furstenberg using notions from topological dynamics, constitute a special class of IP-sets possessing rich combinatorial properties: Each central set contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions, and solutions to all partition regular systems of homogeneous linear equations. In this paper we investigate central sets in the framework of combinatorics on words. Using various families of uniformly recurrent words, including Sturmian words, the Thue-Morse word and fixed points of weak mixing substitutions, we generate an assortment of central sets which reflect the rich combinatorial structure of the underlying words. The results in this paper rely on interactions between different areas of mathematics, some of which had not previously been directly linked. They include the general theory of combinatorics on words, abstract numeration systems, and the beautiful theory, developed by Hindman, Strauss and others, linking IP-sets and central sets to the algebraic/topological properties of the Stone-Čech compactification of $\nats .$
On additive properties of sets defined by the Thue-Morse word
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study some additive properties of subsets of the set $\nats$ of positive integers: A subset $A$ of $\nats$ is called {\it $k$-summable} (where $k\in\ben$) if $A$ contains $\textstyle \big{\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq {1,2,...,k\} \big}$ for some $k$-term sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... < x_k$. We say $A \subseteq \nats$ is finite FS-big if $A$ is $k$-summable for each positive integer $k$. We say is $A \subseteq \nats$ is infinite FS-big if for each positive integer $k,$ $A$ contains ${\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq \nats and #F\leq k}$ for some infinite sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... $. We say $A\subseteq \nats $ is an IP-set if $A$ contains ${\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq \nats and #F<\infty}$ for some infinite sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... $. By the Finite Sums Theorem [5], the collection of all IP-sets is partition regular, i.e., if $A$ is an IP-set then for any finite partition of $A$, one cell of the partition is an IP-set. Here we prove that the collection of all finite FS-big sets is also partition regular. Let $\TM =011010011001011010... $ denote the Thue-Morse word fixed by the morphism $0\mapsto 01$ and $1\mapsto 10$. For each factor $u$ of $\TM$ we consider the set $\TM\big|_u\subseteq \nats$ of all occurrences of $u$ in $\TM$. In this note we characterize the sets $\TM\big|_u$ in terms of the additive properties defined above. Using the Thue-Morse word we show that the collection of all infinite FS-big sets is not partition regular.

On the Existence of Frames of Some Extremal Odd Unimodular Lattices and Self-Dual Zk-Codes
For some extremal (optimal) odd unimodular lattices L in dimensions n=12,16,20,32,36,40 and 44, we determine all positive integers k such that L contains a k-frame. This result yields the existence of an extremal Type I Zk-code of lengths 12,16,20,32,36,40 and 44 and a near-extremal Type I Zk-code of length 28 for positive integers k with only a few exceptions.

An Extension of Cui-Kano's Characterization Problem on Graph Factors
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and let $H:V(G)\rightarrow 2^N$ be a set function associating with $G$. An $H$-factor of graph $G$ is a spanning subgraphs $F$ such that $$d_F(v)\in H(v){4em}\hbox{for every}v\in V(G).$$ Let $f:V(G)\rightarrow N$ be an even integer-valued function such that $f\geq 4$ and let $H_f(v)=\{1,3,...,f(v)-1, f(v)\}$ for $v\in V(G)$. In this paper, we investigate $H_f$-factors of graphs $G$ by using Lovász's structural descriptions. Let $o(G)$ denote the number of odd components of $G$. We show that if one of the following conditions holds, then $G$ contains an $H_f$-factor. [$(i)$] $o(G-S)\leq f(S)$ for all $S\subseteq V(G)$; [$(ii)$] $|V(G)|$ is odd, $d_G(v)\geq f(v)-1$ for all $v\in V(G)$ and $o(G-S)\leq f(S)$ for all $\emptyset\neq S\subseteq V(G)$. As a corollary, we show that if a graph $G$ with odd order and minimum degree $2n-1$ satisfies $$o(G-S)\leq 2n|S|{4em}{for all} \emptyset\neq S\subseteq V(G),$$ then $G$ contains an $H_n$-factor. In particular, we make progress on the characterization problem for a special family of graphs proposed by Akiyama and Kano.

Combinatorial Structures on van der Waerden sets
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 24 (2015) 929-953 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we provide two results. The first one consists an infinitary version of the Furstenberg-Weiss Theorem. More precisely we show that every subset $A$ of a homogeneous tree $T$ such that $\frac{|A\cap T(n)|}{|T(n)|}\geqδ$, where T(n) denotes the $n$-th level of $T$, for all $n$ in a van der Waerden set, for some positive real $δ$, contains a strong subtree having a level sets which forms a van der Waerden set. The second result is the following. For every sequence $(m_q)_{q}$ of positive integers and for every real $0<δ\\leq1$, there exists a sequence $(n_q)_{q}$ of positive integers such that for every $D\subseteq \bigcup_k\prod_{q=0}^{k-1}[n_q]$ satisfying $$\frac{\big{|}D\cap \prod_{q=0}^{k-1} [n_q]\big{|}}{\prod_{q=0}^{k-1}n_q}\geqδ$$ for every $k$ in a van der Waerden set, there is a sequence $(J_q)_{q}$, where $J_q$ is an arithmetic progression of length $m_q$ contained in $[n_q]$ for all $q$, such that $\prod_{q=0}^{k-1}J_q\subseteq D$ for every $k$ in a van der Waerden set. Moreover, working in an abstract setting, we obtain $J_q$ to be any configuration of natural numbers that can be found in an arbitrary set of positive density.

Interval non-edge-colorable bipartite graphs and multigraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An edge-coloring of a graph $G$ with colors $1,...,t$ is called an interval $t$-coloring if all colors are used, and the colors of edges incident to any vertex of $G$ are distinct and form an interval of integers. In 1991 Erdős constructed a bipartite graph with 27 vertices and maximum degree 13 which has no interval coloring. Erdős's counterexample is the smallest (in a sense of maximum degree) known bipartite graph which is not interval colorable. On the other hand, in 1992 Hansen showed that all bipartite graphs with maximum degree at most 3 have an interval coloring. In this paper we give some methods for constructing of interval non-edge-colorable bipartite graphs. In particular, by these methods, we construct three bipartite graphs which have no interval coloring, contain 20,19,21 vertices and have maximum degree 11,12,13, respectively. This partially answers a question that arose in [T.R. Jensen, B. Toft, Graph coloring problems, Wiley Interscience Series in Discrete Mathematics and Optimization, 1995, p. 204]. We also consider similar problems for bipartite multigraphs.

The geometry of a deformation of the standard addition on the integral lattice
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathfrak A_n$ be the subset of the standard integer lattice $\mathbb Z^n$, $\mathfrak A_n\subset\mathbb Z^n$ which is defined by the condition $\mathfrak A_n=((a_1,...,a_n)\in\mathbb Z^n | a_i\not\equiv a_j\mod n, \forall i,j\in {1,... n})$. It is clear that the standard addition on the lattice $\mathbb Z^n$ does not induce the group structure on the set $\mathfrak A_n$ since the componentwise sum of some two vectors may contain components which are equal modulo $n$. Our aim is to find a new associative multiplication on the lattice $\mathbb Z^n$ such that the induced multiplication on the set $\mathfrak A_n$ gives it the group structure. In this paper the group structure on the subset $\mathfrak A_n$ of the integer lattice $\mathbb Z^n$ is studied by means of the constructions of a deformation of a group multiplication. The geometric realization of this group in the enveloping space and its generators and relations between them are found. We begin with the main constructions and the results we need for them.

SL_2-tilings and triangulations of the strip
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 120 (2013), 1817-1834 • View Publication • BIB
SL_2-tilings were introduced by Assem, Reutenauer, and Smith in connection with frieses and their applications to cluster algebras. An SL_2-tiling is a bi-infinite matrix of positive integers such that each adjacent 2 x 2-submatrix has determinant 1. We construct a large class of new SL_2-tilings which contains the previously known ones. More precisely, we show that there is a bijection between our class of SL_2-tilings and certain combinatorial objects, namely triangulations of the strip.

Long geodesics in subgraphs of the cube
Published • View Publication • BIB
A path in the hypercube $Q_n$ is said to be a geodesic if no two of its edges are in the same direction. Let $G$ be a subgraph of $Q_n$ with average degree $d$. How long a geodesic must $G$ contain? We show that $G$ must contain a geodesic of length $d$. This result, which is best possible, strengthens a theorem of Feder and Subi. It is also related to the `antipodal colourings' conjecture of Norine.

Pairs of Fan-type heavy subgraphs for pancyclicity of 2-connected graphs
Published in Australasian J. Combin. 58(1) (2014) 127--136 • Search Publication
A graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is Hamiltonian if it contains a spanning cycle, and pancyclic if it contains cycles of all lengths from 3 to $n$. In 1984, Fan presented a degree condition involving every pair of vertices at distance two for a 2-connected graph to be Hamiltonian. Motivated by Fan's result, we say that an induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ is $f_1$-heavy if for every pair of vertices $u,v\in V(H)$, $d_{H}(u,v)=2$ implies $\max\{d(u),d(v)\}\geq (n+1)/2$. For a given graph $R$, $G$ is called $R$-$f_1$-heavy if every induced subgraph of $G$ isomorphic to $R$ is $f_1$-heavy. In this paper we show that for a connected graph $S$ with $S\neq P_3$ and a 2-connected claw-$f_1$-heavy graph $G$ which is not a cycle, $G$ being $S$-$f_1$-heavy implies $G$ is pancyclic if $S=P_4,Z_1$ or $Z_2$, where claw is $K_{1,3}$ and $Z_i$ is the path $a_1a_2a_3... a_{i+2}a_{i+3}$ plus the edge $a_1a_3$. Our result partially improves a previous theorem due to Bedrossian on pancyclicity of 2-connected graphs.

Transporting continuity properties from a poset to its subposets
Published in Theoret. Comput. Sci. 912 (2022) 109-132 • View Publication • BIB
We identify two key conditions that a subset $A$ of a poset $P$ may satisfy to guarantee the transfer of continuity properties from $P$ to $A$. We then highlight practical cases where these key conditions are fulfilled. Along the way we are led to consider subsets of a given poset $P$ whose way-below relation is the restriction of the way-below relation of $P$, which we call way-below preserving subposets. As an application, we show that every conditionally complete poset with the interpolation property contains a largest continuous way-below preserving subposet. Most of our results are expressed in the general setting of Z theory, where Z is a subset system.

Long properly colored cycles in edge colored complete graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 324 (2014) 56--61 • View Publication • BIB
Let $K_{n}^{c}$ denote a complete graph on $n$ vertices whose edges are colored in an arbitrary way. Let $Δ^{\mathrm{mon}} (K_{n}^{c})$ denote the maximum number of edges of the same color incident with a vertex of $K_{n}^{c}$. A properly colored cycle (path) in $K_{n}^{c}$ is a cycle (path) in which adjacent edges have distinct colors. B. Bollobás and P. Erdös (1976) proposed the following conjecture: if $Δ^{\mathrm{mon}} (K_{n}^{c})<\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor$, then $K_{n}^{c}$ contains a properly colored Hamiltonian cycle. Li, Wang and Zhou proved that if $Δ^{\mathrm{mon}} (K_{n}^{c})< \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor$, then $K_{n}^{c}$ contains a properly colored cycle of length at least $\lceil \frac{n+2}{3}\rceil+1$. In this paper, we improve the bound to $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil + 2$.
