Avoiding conjugacy classes on the 5-letter alphabet
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct an infinite word $w$ over the $5$-letter alphabet such that for every factor $f$ of $w$ of length at least two, there exists a cyclic permutation of $f$ that is not a factor of $w$. In other words, $w$ does not contain a non-trivial conjugacy class. This proves the conjecture in Gamard et al. [TCS 2018]

Minimum degree condition for a graph to be knitted
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a positive integer $k$, a graph is $k$-knitted if for each $k$-subset $S$ of vertices, and every partition of $S$ into disjoint parts $S_1, \ldots, S_t$ for some $t\ge 1$, one can find disjoint connected subgraphs $C_1, \ldots, C_t$ such that $C_i$ contains $S_i$ for each $i$. In this article, we show that if the minimum degree of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ is at least $n/2+k/2-1$ when $n\ge 2k+3$, then $G$ is $k$-knitted. The minimum degree is sharp. As a corollary, we obtain that $k$-contraction-critical graphs are $\left\lceil\frac{k}{8}\right\rceil$-connected.
Minor-Obstructions for Apex-Pseudoforests
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is called a pseudoforest if none of its connected components contains more than one cycle. A graph is an apex-pseudoforest if it can become a pseudoforest by removing one of its vertices. We identify 33 graphs that form the minor-obstruction set of the class of apex-pseudoforests, i.e., the set of all minor-minimal graphs that are not apex-pseudoforests.

On the rational Turán exponents conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
The extremal number $\mathrm{ex}(n,F)$ of a graph $F$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph not containing $F$ as a subgraph. A real number $r \in [1,2]$ is realisable if there exists a graph $F$ with $\mathrm{ex}(n , F) = Θ(n^r)$. Several decades ago, Erdős and Simonovits conjectured that every rational number in $[1,2]$ is realisable. Despite decades of effort, the only known realisable numbers are $0,1, \frac{7}{5}, 2$, and the numbers of the form $1+\frac{1}{m}$, $2-\frac{1}{m}$, $2-\frac{2}{m}$ for integers $m \geq 1$. In particular, it is not even known whether the set of all realisable numbers contains a single limit point other than two numbers $1$ and $2$. In this paper, we make progress on the conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits. First, we show that $2 - \frac{a}{b}$ is realisable for any integers $a,b \geq 1$ with $b>a$ and $b \equiv \pm 1 ~({\rm mod}\:a)$. This includes all previously known ones, and gives infinitely many limit points $2-\frac{1}{m}$ in the set of all realisable numbers as a consequence. Secondly, we propose a conjecture on subdivisions of bipartite graphs. Apart from being interesting on its own, we show that, somewhat surprisingly, this subdivision conjecture in fact implies that every rational number between 1 and 2 is realisable.

$d$-cluster-free sets with a given matching number
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 82C (2019) 103000 • View Publication • BIB
Let $3\le d\le k$ and $ν\ge 0$ be fixed and $\mathcal{F}\subset\binom{[n]}{k}$. The matching number of $\mathcal{F}$, denoted by $ν(\mathcal{F})$, is the maximum number of pairwise disjoint sets in $\mathcal{F}$, and $\mathcal{F}$ is $d$-cluster-free if it does not contain $d$ sets with the union of size at most $2k$ and empty intersection. In this paper, we give a lower bound and an upper bound for the maximum size of a $d$-cluster-free family with a matching number at least $ν+1$. In particular, our result of the case $ν=1$ settles a conjecture of Mammoliti and Britz. We also introduce a Turán problem in hypergraphs that allows multiple edges, which may be of independent interest.

Gallai-Ramsey numbers for a class of graphs with five vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, the $k$-colored Gallai-Ramsey number $gr_k(G : H)$ is defined to be the minimum integer $n$ such that every $k$-coloring of the complete graph on $n$ vertices contains either a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we consider $gr_k(K_3 : H)$ where $H$ is a connected graph with five vertices and at most six edges. There are in total thirteen graphs in this graph class, and the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for some of them have been studied step by step in several papers. We determine all the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for the remaining graphs, and we also obtain some related results for a class of unicyclic graphs.

Forbidden rainbow subgraphs that force large monochromatic or multicolored k-connected subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $n, k, m$ be positive integers with $n\gg m\gg k$, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the set of graphs $G$ of order at least 3 such that there is a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph of order at least $n-f(G,k,m)$ in any rainbow $G$-free coloring of $K_n$ using all the $m$ colors. In this paper, we prove that the set $\mathcal{A}$ consists of precisely $P_6$, $P_3\cup P_4$, $K_2\cup P_5$, $K_2\cup 2P_3$, $2K_2\cup K_3$, $2K_2\cup P^{+}_4$, $3K_2\cup K_{1,3}$ and their subgraphs of order at least 3. Moreover, we show that for any graph $H\in \mathcal{A}$, if $n$ sufficiently larger than $m$ and $k$, then any rainbow $(P_3\cup H)$-free coloring of $K_n$ using all the $m$ colors contains a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph of order at least $cn$, where $c=c(H)$ is a constant, not depending on $n$, $m$ or $k$. Furthermore, we consider a parallel problem in complete bipartite graphs. Let $s, t, k, m$ be positive integers with ${\rm min}\left\{s, t\right\}\gg m\gg k$ and $m\geq |E(H)|$, and let $\mathcal{B}$ be the set of bipartite graphs $H$ of order at least 3 such that there is a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph of order at least $s+t-f(H,k,m)$ in any rainbow $H$-free coloring of $K_{s,t}$ using all the $m$ colors, where $f(H,k,m)$ is not depending on $s$ or $t$. We prove that the set $\mathcal{B}$ consists of precisely $2P_3$, $2K_2\cup K_{1,3}$ and their subgraphs of order at least 3. Finally, we consider the large $k$-connected multicolored subgraph instead of monochromatic subgraph. We show that for $1\leq k \leq 3$ and $n$ sufficiently large, every Gallai-3-coloring of $K_n$ contains a $k$-connected subgraph of order at least $n-\left\lfloor\frac{k-1}{2}\right\rfloor$ using at most two colors. We also show that the above statement is false for $k=4t$, where $t$ is an positive integer.

Intersecting Families of Perfect Matchings
A family of perfect matchings of $K_{2n}$ is $t$-$intersecting$ if any two members share $t$ or more edges. We prove for any $t \in \mathbb{N}$ that every $t$-intersecting family of perfect matchings has size no greater than $(2(n-t) - 1)!!$ for sufficiently large $n$, and that equality holds if and only if the family is composed of all perfect matchings that contain a fixed set of $t$ disjoint edges. This is an asymptotic version of a conjecture of Godsil and Meagher that can be seen as the non-bipartite analogue of the Deza-Frankl conjecture proven by Ellis, Friedgut, and Pilpel.

Characterising $k$-connected sets in infinite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-connected set in an infinite graph, where $k > 0$ is an integer, is a set of vertices such that any two of its subsets of the same size $\ell \leq k$ can be connected by $\ell$ disjoint paths in the whole graph. We characterise the existence of $k$-connected sets of arbitrary but fixed infinite cardinality via the existence of certain minors and topological minors. We also prove a duality theorem for the existence of such $k$-connected sets: if a graph contains no such $k$-connected set, then it has a tree-decomposition which, whenever it exists, precludes the existence of such a $k$-connected set.

Polynomial Schur's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
We resolve the Ramsey problem for $\{x,y,z:x+y=p(z)\}$ for all polynomials $p$ over $\mathbb{Z}$. In particular, we characterise all polynomials that are $2$-Ramsey, that is, those $p(z)$ such that any $2$-colouring of $\mathbb{N}$ contains infinitely many monochromatic solutions for $x+y=p(z)$. For polynomials that are not $2$-Ramsey, we characterise all $2$-colourings of $\mathbb{N}$ that are not $2$-Ramsey, revealing that certain divisibility barrier is the only obstruction to $2$-Ramseyness for $x+y=p(z)$.

Another Note on Intervals in the Hales-Jewett Theorem
The Hales-Jewett Theorem states that any $r$-colouring of $[m]^n$ contains a monochromatic combinatorial line if $n$ is large enough. Shelah's proof of the theorem implies that for $m = 3$ there always exists a monochromatic combinatorial lines whose set of active coordinates is the union of at most $r$ intervals. Conlon and Kamčev proved the existence of colourings for which it cannot be fewer than $r$ intervals if $r$ is odd. For $r = 2$ however, Leader and Räty showed that one can always find a monochromatic combinatorial line whose active coordinate set is a single interval. In this paper, we extend the result of Leader and Räty to the case of all even $r$, showing that one can always find a monochromatic combinatorial line in $[3]^n$ whose set of active coordinate is the union of at most $r-1$ intervals.

New Polyhedral and Algorithmic Results on Greedoids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present various new results on greedoids. We prove a theorem that generalizes an equivalent formulation of Edmonds' classic matroid polytope theorem to local forest greedoids -- a class of greedoids that contains matroids as well as branching greedoids. We also describe an application of this theorem in the field of measuring the reliability of networks by game-theoretical tools. Finally, we prove new results on the optimality of the greedy algorithm on greedoids and correct some mistakes that have been present in the literature for almost three decades.

The Erdős-Ko-Rado property of trees of depth two
A family of sets is intersecting if any two sets in the family intersect. Given a graph $G$ and an integer $r\geq 1$, let $\mathcal{I}^{(r)}(G)$ denote the family of independent sets of size $r$ of $G$. For a vertex $v$ of $G$, let $\mathcal{I}^{(r)}_v(G)$ denote the family of independent sets of size $r$ that contain $v$. This family is called an $r$-star. Then $G$ is said to be $r$-EKR if no intersecting subfamily of $ \mathcal{I}^{(r)}(G)$ is bigger than the largest $r$-star. Let $k, n, r \geq 1$, and let $T(n, k)$ be the tree of depth two in which the root has degree $n$ and every neighbour of the root has the same number $k + 1$ of neighbours. For each $k \geq 2$, we show that $T(n, k)$ is $r$-EKR if $2r \leq n$, extending results of Borg and of Feghali, Johnson and Thomas who considered the case $k = 1$.

Recognizing generating subgraphs revisited
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are of the same cardinality. Assume that a weight function $w$ is defined on its vertices. Then $G$ is $w$-well-covered if all maximal independent sets are of the same weight. For every graph $G$, the set of weight functions $w$ such that $G$ is $w$-well-covered is a vector space, denoted as $WCW(G).$ Deciding whether an input graph $G$ is well-covered is co-NP-complete. Therefore, finding $WCW(G)$ is co-NP-hard. A generating subgraph of a graph $G$ is an induced complete bipartite subgraph $B$ of $G$ on vertex sets of bipartition $B_{X}$ and $B_{Y}$, such that each of $S \cup B_{X}$ and $S \cup B_{Y}$ is a maximal independent set of $G$, for some independent set $S$. If $B$ is generating, then $w(B_{X})=w(B_{Y})$ for every weight function $w \in WCW(G)$. Therefore, generating subgraphs play an important role in finding $WCW(G)$. The decision problem whether a subgraph of an input graph is generating is known to be NP-complete. In this article, we prove NP-completeness of the problem for graphs without cycles of length 3 and 5, and for bipartite graphs with girth at least 6. On the other and, we supply polynomial algorithms for recognizing generating subgraphs and finding $WCW(G)$, when the input graph is bipartite without cycles of length 6. We also present a polynomial algorithm which finds $WCW(G)$ when $G$ does not contain cycles of lengths 3, 4, 5, and 7.

Enumeration of lattice polytopes by their volume
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well known result by Lagarias and Ziegler states that there are finitely many equivalence classes of d-dimensional lattice polytopes having volume at most K, for fixed constants d and K. We describe an algorithm for the complete enumeration of such equivalence classes for arbitrary constants d and K. The algorithm, which gives another proof of the finiteness result, is implemented for small values of K, up to dimension six. The resulting database contains and extends several existing ones, and has been used to correct mistakes in other classifications. When specialized to three-dimensional smooth polytopes, it extends previous classifications by Bogart et al., Lorenz and Lundman. Moreover, we give a structure theorem for smooth polytopes with few lattice points that proves that they have a quadratic triangulation and that we use, together with the classification, to describe smooth polytopes having small volume in arbitrary dimension. In dimension three we enumerate all the simplices having up to 11 interior lattice points and we use them to conjecture a set of sharp inequalities for the coefficients of the Ehrhart h*-polynomials, unifying several existing conjectures. Finally, we extract and discuss minimal interesting examples from the classification, and we study the frequency of properties such as being spanning, very ample, IDP, and having a unimodular cover or triangulation. In particular, we find the smallest polytopes which are very ample but not IDP, and with a unimodular cover but without a unimodular triangulation.

Dual Circumference and Collinear Sets
We show that, if a $n$-vertex triangulation $T$ of maximum degree $Δ$ has a dual that contains a cycle of length $\ell$, then $T$ has a non-crossing straight-line drawing in which some \emph{collinear set} of $Ω(\ell/Δ^4)$ vertices lie on a line. Using the current lower bounds on the length of longest cycles in 3-regular 3-connected graphs, this implies that every $n$-vertex planar graph of maximum degree $Δ$ has a collinear set of size $Ω(n^{0.8}/Δ^4)$. Very recently, Dujmović et. al. (SODA 2019) showed that, if $S$ is a collinear set in a triangulation $T$ then, for any point set $X\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ with $|X|=|S|$, $T$ has a non-crossing straight-line drawing in which the vertices of $S$ are drawn on the points in $X$. Because of this, collinear sets have numerous applications in graph drawing and related areas.

On the Minimal Edge Density of $K_4$-free 6-critical Graphs
Kostochka and Yancey resolved a famous conjecture of Ore on the asymptotic density of $k$-critical graphs by proving that every $k$-critical graph $G$ satisfies $|E(G)| \geq (\frac{k}{2} - \frac{1}{k-1})|V(G)| - \frac{k(k-3)}{2(k-1)}$. The class of graphs for which this bound is tight, $k$-Ore graphs, contain a notably large number of $K_{k-2}$-subgraphs. Subsequent work attempted to determine the asymptotic density for $k$-critical graphs that do \emph{not} contain large cliques as subgraphs, but only partial progress has been made on this problem. The second author showed that if $G$ is 5-critical and has no $K_3$-subgraphs, then for $\varepsilon = 1/84$, $|E(G)| \geq (\frac{9}{4} + \varepsilon)|V(G)| - \frac{5}{4}$. It has also been shown that for all $k \geq 33$, there exists $\varepsilon_k > 0$ such that $k$-critical graphs with no $K_{k-2}$-subgraphs satisfy $|E(G)| \geq (\frac{k}{2} - \frac{1}{k-1} + \varepsilon_k)|V(G)| - \frac{k(k-3)}{2(k-1)}$. In this work, we develop general structural results that are applicable to resolving the remaining difficult cases $6 \leq k \leq 32$. We apply our results to carefully analyze the structure of 6-critical graphs and use a discharging argument to show that for $\varepsilon_6 = 1/1050$, 6-critical graphs with no $K_4$ subgraph satisfy $|E(G)| \geq ( \frac{k}{2} - \frac{1}{k-1} + \varepsilon_6 ) |V(G)| - \frac{k(k-3)}{2(k-1)}$.
The multicolour size-Ramsey number of powers of paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a positive integer $s$, a graph $G$ is $s$-Ramsey for a graph $H$, denoted $G\rightarrow (H)_s$, if every $s$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The $s$-colour size-Ramsey number ${\hat{r}}_s(H)$ of a graph $H$ is defined to be ${\hat{r}}_s(H)=\min\{|E(G)|\colon G\rightarrow (H)_s\}$. We prove that, for all positive integers $k$ and $s$, we have ${\hat{r}}_s(P_n^k)=O(n)$, where $P_n^k$ is the $k$th power of the $n$-vertex path $P_n$.

A note on saturation for Berge-G hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph G, a hypergraph H is called Berge-G if there is a hypergraph H', isomorphic to H, containing all vertices of G, so that e is contained in f(e) for each edge e of G, where f is a bijection between E(G) and E(H'). The set of all Berge-G hypergraphs is denoted B(G). A hypergraph H is called Berge-G saturated if it does not contain any subhypergraph from B(G), but adding any new hyperedge of size at least 2 to H creates such a subhypergraph. Each Berge-G saturated hypergraph has at least |E(G)|-1 hyperedges. We show that for each graph G that is not a certain star and for any n at least |V(G)|, there is a Berge-G saturated hypergraph on n vertices and exactly |E(G)|-1 hyperedges. This solves a problem of finding a saturated hypergraph on n vertices with the smallest number of edges exactly.

The structure of graphs with no W_4 immersion
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper gives a precise structure theorem for the class of graphs which do not contain $W_4$ as an immersion. This strengthens a previous result of Belmonte at al. that gives a rough description of this class. In fact, we prove a stronger theorem concerning rooted immersions of $W_4$ where one terminal is specified in advance. This stronger result is key in a forthcoming structure theorem for graphs with no $K_{3,3}$ immersion.
