Non-Hyperoctahedral Categories of Two-Colored Partitions, Part II: All Possible Parameter Values
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article is part of a series with the aim of classifying all non-hyperoctahedral categories of two-colored partitions. Those constitute by some Tannaka-Krein type result the co-representation categories of a specific class of quantum groups. However, our series of articles is purely combinatorial. In Part I we introduced a class of parameters which gave rise to many new non-hyperoctahedral categories of partitions. In the present article we show that this class actually contains all possible parameter values of all non-hyperoctahedral categories of partitions. This is an important step towards the classification of all non-hyperoctahedral categories.

Order-isomorphic twins in permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $a_1,\dotsc,a_n$ be a permutation of $[n]$. Two disjoint order-isomorphic subsequences are called \emph{twins}. We show that every permutation of $[n]$ contains twins of length $Ω(n^{3/5})$ improving the trivial bound of $Ω(n^{1/2})$. We also show that a random permutation contains twins of length $Ω(n^{2/3})$, which is sharp.
A discrepancy version of the Hajnal-Szemerédi theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A perfect $K_r$-tiling in a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of the clique $K_r$ in $G$ covering every vertex of $G$. The famous Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem determines the minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect $K_r$-tiling in a graph $G$. The notion of discrepancy appears in many branches of mathematics. In the graph setting, one assigns the edges of a graph $G$ labels from $\{-1,1\}$, and one seeks substructures $F$ of $G$ that have `high' discrepancy (i.e. the sum of the labels of the edges in $F$ is far from $0$). In this paper we determine the minimum degree threshold for a graph to contain a perfect $K_r$-tiling of high discrepancy.

Toward a Schurification of Parking Function Formulas via bijections with Young Tableaux
This paper contains a partial answer to the open problem 3.11 of \cite{[H2008]}. That is to find an explicit bijection on Schröder paths that inverts the statistics area and bounce. This paper started as an attempt to write the sum over $m$-Schröder paths with a fix number of diagonal steps into Schur functions in the variables $q$ and $t$. Some results have been generalized to parking functions, and some bijections were made with standard Young tableaux giving way to partial combinatorial formulas in the basis $s_μ(q,t)s_λ(X)$ for $\nabla(e_n)$ (respectively, $\nabla^m(e_n)$), when $μ$ and $λ$ are hooks (respectively, $μ$ is of length one). We also give an explicit algorithm that gives all the Schröder paths related to a Schur function $s_μ(q,t)$ when $μ$ is of length one. In a sense, it is a partial decomposition of Schröder paths into crystals.
$K$ block set partition patterns and statistics
A set partition $σ$ of $[n]=\{1,\cdots ,n\}$ contains another set partition $ω$ if a standardized restriction of $σ$ to a subset $S\subseteq[n]$ is equivalent to $ω$. Otherwise, $σ$ avoids $ω$. Sagan and Goyt have determined the cardinality of the avoidance classes for all sets of patterns on partitions of $[3]$. Additionally, there is a bijection between the set partitions and restricted growth functions (RGFs). Wachs and White defined four fundamental statistics on those RGFs. Sagan, Dahlberg, Dorward, Gerhard, Grubb, Purcell, and Reppuhn consider the distributions of these statistics over various avoidance classes and they obtained four variate analogues of the previously cited cardinality results. They did the first thorough study of these distributions. The analogues of their many results follows for set partitions with exactly $k$ blocks for a specified positive integer $k$. These analogues are discussed in this work.

Corners and simpliciality in oriented matroids and partial cubes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Building on a recent characterization of tope graphs of Complexes of Oriented Matroids (COMs), we tackle and generalize several classical problems in Oriented Matroids (OMs), Lopsided Sets (aka ample set systems), and partial cubes via Metric Graph Theory. Our first main result is that every element of an OM from a class introduced by Mandel is incident to a simplicial tope, i.e, such OMs contain no mutation-free elements. This allows us to refute a conjecture of Mandel from 1983, that would have implied the famous Las Vergnas' simplex conjecture. Further, we show that the mutation graph of uniform OMs of order at most 9 are connected, thus confirming a stronger conjecture of Cordovil-Las Vergnas in this setting. The second main contribution is the introduction of corners of COMs as a natural generalization of corners in Lopsided Sets. Generalizing results of Bandelt and Chepoi, Tracy Hall, and Chalopin et al. we prove that realizable COMs, rank 2 COMs, as well as hypercellular graphs admit corner peelings. Using this, we confirm Las Vergnas' conjecture for antipodal partial cubes (a class much lager than OMs) of small rank or isometric dimension.
Vizing-Goldberg type bounds for the equitable chromatic number of block graphs
An equitable coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper vertex coloring of $G$ such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one. In the paper, we pose a conjecture that offers a gap-one bound for the smallest number of colors needed to equitably color every block graph. In other words, the difference between the upper and the lower bounds of our conjecture is at most one. Thus, in some sense, the situation is similar to that of chromatic index, where we have the classical theorem of Vizing and the Goldberg conjecture for multigraphs. The results obtained in the paper support our conjecture. More precisely, we verify it in the class of well-covered block graphs, which are block graphs in which each vertex belongs to a maximum independent set. We also show that the conjecture is true for block graphs, which contain a vertex that does not lie in an independent set of size larger than two. Finally, we verify the conjecture for some symmetric-like block graphs. In order to derive our results we obtain structural characterizations of block graphs from these classes.

String graphs have the Erdős-Hajnal property
Published • View Publication • BIB
A string graph is the intersection graph of curves in the plane. We prove that there exists an absolute constant $c>0$ such that if $G$ is a string graph on $n$ vertices, then $G$ contains either a clique or an independent set of size at least $n^{c}$.

Minimizing the number of edges in $\mathcal{C}_{\ge r}$-saturated graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, a graph $G$ is said to be $\mathcal{F}$-saturated if $G$ does not contain a copy of $F$ as a subgraph for any $F\in\mathcal{F}$ but the addition of any edge $e\notin E(G)$ creates at least one copy of some $F\in\mathcal{F}$ within $G$. The minimum size of an $\mathcal{F}$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices are called the saturation number, denoted by $\sat(n, \mathcal{F})$. Let $\mathcal{C}_{\ge r}$ be the family of cycles of length at least $r$. Ferrara et al. (2012) gave lower and upper bounds of $\sat(n, C_{\ge r})$ and determined the exact values of $\sat(n, C_{\ge r})$ for $3\le r\le 5$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\sat(n,\mathcal{C}_{\ge r})$ for $r=6$ and $28\le \frac{n}2\le r\le n$ and give new upper and lower bounds for the other cases.

Convex geometry and the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv problem
Denote by ${\mathfrak s}({\mathbb F}_p^d)$ the Erd{\H o}s--Ginzburg--Ziv constant of ${\mathbb F}_p^d$, that is, the minimum $s$ such that any sequence of $s$ vectors in ${\mathbb F}_p^d$ contains $p$ vectors whose sum is zero. Let ${\mathfrak w}({\mathbb F}_p^d)$ be the maximum size of a sequence of vectors $v_1, \ldots, v_s \in {\mathbb F}_p^d$ such that for any integers $α_1, \ldots, α_s \ge 0$ with sum $p$ we have $α_1 v_1 + \ldots + α_s v_s \neq 0$ unless $α_i = p$ for some $i$. In 1995, Alon--Dubiner proved that ${\mathfrak s}(\mathbb F_p^d)$ grows linearly in $p$ when $d$ is fixed. In this work, we determine the constant of linearity: for fixed $d$ and growing $p$ we show that ${\mathfrak s}({\mathbb F}_p^d) \sim {\mathfrak w}({\mathbb F}_p^d) p$. Furthermore, for any $p$ and $d$ we show that ${\mathfrak w}({\mathbb F}_p^d) \le {2d-1 \choose d}+1$. In particular, ${\mathfrak s}({\mathbb F}_p^d) \le 4^d p$ for all sufficiently large $p$ and fixed $d$.

Transversals and bipancyclicity in bipartite graph families
Published • View Publication • BIB
A bipartite graph is called bipancyclic if it contains cycles of every even length from four up to the number of vertices in the graph. A theorem of Schmeichel and Mitchem states that for $n \geq 4$, every balanced bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices in which each vertex in one color class has degree greater than $\frac{n}{2}$ and each vertex in the other color class has degree at least $\frac{n}{2}$ is bipancyclic. We prove a generalization of this theorem in the setting of graph transversals. Namely, we show that given a family $\mathcal{G}$ of $2n$ bipartite graphs on a common set $X$ of $2n$ vertices with a common balanced bipartition, if each graph of $\mathcal G$ has minimum degree greater than $\frac{n}{2}$ in one color class and minimum degree at least $\frac{n}{2}$ in the other color class, then there exists a cycle on $X$ of each even length $4 \leq \ell \leq 2n$ that uses at most one edge from each graph of $\mathcal G$. We also show that given a family $\mathcal G$ of $n$ bipartite graphs on a common set $X$ of $2n$ vertices meeting the same degree conditions, there exists a perfect matching on $X$ that uses exactly one edge from each graph of $\mathcal G$.

The fraction of an $S_n$-orbit on a hyperplane
Published • View Publication • BIB
Huang, McKinnon, and Satriano conjectured that if $v \in \mathbb{R}^n$ has distinct coordinates and $n \geq 3$, then a hyperplane through the origin other than $\sum_i x_i = 0$ contains at most $2\lfloor n/2 \rfloor (n-2)!$ of the vectors obtained by permuting the coordinates of $v$. We prove this conjecture.

The (Generalized) Orthogonality Dimension of (Generalized) Kneser Graphs: Bounds and Applications
The orthogonality dimension of a graph $G=(V,E)$ over a field $\mathbb{F}$ is the smallest integer $t$ for which there exists an assignment of a vector $u_v \in \mathbb{F}^t$ with $\langle u_v,u_v \rangle \neq 0$ to every vertex $v \in V$, such that $\langle u_v, u_{v'} \rangle = 0$ whenever $v$ and $v'$ are adjacent vertices in $G$. The study of the orthogonality dimension of graphs is motivated by various applications in information theory and in theoretical computer science. The contribution of the present work is two-fold. First, we prove that there exists a constant $c$ such that for every sufficiently large integer $t$, it is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard to decide whether the orthogonality dimension of an input graph over $\mathbb{R}$ is at most $t$ or at least $3t/2-c$. At the heart of the proof lies a geometric result, which might be of independent interest, on a generalization of the orthogonality dimension parameter for the family of Kneser graphs, analogously to a long-standing conjecture of Stahl (J. Comb. Theo. Ser. B, 1976). Second, we study the smallest possible orthogonality dimension over finite fields of the complement of graphs that do not contain certain fixed subgraphs. In particular, we provide an explicit construction of triangle-free $n$-vertex graphs whose complement has orthogonality dimension over the binary field at most $n^{1-δ}$ for some constant $δ>0$. Our results involve constructions from the family of generalized Kneser graphs and they are motivated by the rigidity approach to circuit lower bounds. We use them to answer a couple of questions raised by Codenotti, Pudlák, and Resta (Theor. Comput. Sci., 2000), and in particular, to disprove their Odd Alternating Cycle Conjecture over every finite field.

Small uncountable cardinals in large-scale topology
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we are interested in finding and evaluating cardinal characteristics of the continuum that appear in large-scale topology, usually as the smallest weights of coarse structures that belong to certain classes (indiscrete, inseparated, large) of finitary or locally finite coarse structures on $ω$. Besides well-known cardinals $\mathfrak b,\mathfrak d,\mathfrak c$ we shall encounter two new cardinals $\mathsf Δ$ and $\mathsf Σ$, defined as the smallest weight of a finitary coarse structure on $ω$ which contains no discrete subspaces and no asymptotically separated sets, respectively. We prove that $\max\{\mathfrak b,\mathfrak s,\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal N)\}\le\mathsf Δ\le\mathsf Σ\le\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$, but we do not know if the cardinals $\mathsf Δ,\mathsf Σ,\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$ can be separated in suitable models of ZFC.

Induced Turán problems and traces of hypergraphs
Let $F$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ contains an induced Berge $F$ if the vertices of $F$ can be embedded to $H$ (e.g., $V(F)\subseteq V(H)$) and there exists an injective mapping $f$ from the edges of $F$ to the hyperedges of $H$ such that $f(xy) \cap V(F) = \{x,y\}$ holds for each edge $xy$ of $F$. In other words, $H$ contains $F$ as a trace. Let $ex_{r}(n,B_{ind} F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with no induced Berge $F$. Let $ex(n,K_r, F)$ denote the maximum number of $K_r$'s in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We show that these two Turán type functions are strongly related.

The least H-eigenvalue of adjacency tensor of hypergraphs with cut vertices
Published in Frontiers of Mathematics in China, volume 15, 2020, 451-465 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a connected hypergraph with even uniformity, which contains cut vertices. Then $G$ is the coalescence of two nontrivial connected sub-hypergraphs (called branches) at a cut vertex. Let $\mathcal{A}(G)$ be the adjacency tensor of $G$. The least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ refers to the least real eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ associated with a real eigenvector. In this paper we obtain a perturbation result on the least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ when a branch of $G$ attached at one vertex is relocated to another vertex, and characterize the unique hypergraph whose least H-eigenvalue attains the minimum among all hypergraphs in a certain class of hypergraphs which contain a fixed connected hypergraph.

Dynamics of Cycles in Polyhedra I: The Isolation Lemma
Published • View Publication • BIB
A cycle $C$ of a graph $G$ is \emph{isolating} if every component of $G-V(C)$ is a single vertex. We show that isolating cycles in polyhedral graphs can be extended to larger ones: every isolating cycle $C$ of length $6 \leq |E(C)| < \left \lfloor \frac{2}{3}(|V(G)|+4) \right \rfloor$ implies an isolating cycle $C'$ of larger length that contains $V(C)$. By "hopping" iteratively to such larger cycles, we obtain a powerful and very general inductive motor for proving long cycles and computing them (we will give an algorithm with quadratic running time). This is the first step towards the so far elusive quest of finding a universal induction that captures longest cycles of polyhedral graph classes. Our motor provides also a method to prove linear lower bounds on the length of Tutte cycles, as $C'$ will be a Tutte cycle of $G$ if $C$ is. We prove in addition that $|E(C')| \leq |E(C)|+3$ if $G$ contains no face of size five, which gives a new tool for results about cycle spectra, and provides evidence that faces of size five may obstruct long cycles in many graph classes. We test our motor on the following conjecture about essentially 4-connected graphs. A planar graph is \emph{essentially $4$-connected} if it is 3-connected and every of its 3-separators is the neighborhood of a single vertex. Jackson and Wormald proved that every essentially 4-connected planar graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $\frac{2}{5}(n+2)$, and this result has recently been improved multiple times, culminating in the lower bound $\frac{5}{8}(n+2)$. However, the currently best known upper bound is given by an infinite family of such graphs in which no graph $G$ contains a cycle that is longer than $\left \lfloor \frac{2}{3}(n+4) \right \rfloor$; this upper bound is still unmatched. Using isolating cycles, we improve the lower bound to match the upper. All our results are tight.

Separating Bohr denseness from measurable recurrence
Published in Discrete Analysis, 2021:9, 20pp • View Publication • BIB
We prove that there is a set of integers $A$ having positive upper Banach density whose difference set $A-A:=\{a-b:a,b\in A\}$ does not contain a Bohr neighborhood of any integer, answering a question asked by Bergelson, Hegyvári, Ruzsa, and the author, in various combinations. In the language of dynamical systems, this result shows that there is a set of integers $S$ which is dense in the Bohr topology of $\mathbb Z$ and which is not a set of measurable recurrence. Our proof yields the following stronger result: if $S\subseteq \mathbb Z$ is dense in the Bohr topology of $\mathbb Z$, then there is a set $S'\subseteq S$ such that $S'$ is dense in the Bohr topology of $\mathbb Z$ and for all $m\in \mathbb Z,$ the set $(S'-m)\setminus \{0\}$ is not a set of measurable recurrence.

Ramsey numbers of partial order graphs (comparability graphs) and implications in ring theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a partially ordered set $(A, \le)$, let $G_A$ be the simple, undirected graph with vertex set $A$ such that two vertices $a \neq b\in A$ are adjacent if either $a \le b$ or $b \le a$. We call $G_A$ the \emph{partial order graph} or \emph{comparability graph} of $A$. Further, we say that a graph $G$ is a partial order graph if there exists a partially ordered set $A$ such that $G = G_A$. For a class $\mathcal{C}$ of simple, undirected graphs and $n$, $m \ge 1$, we define the Ramsey number $\mathcal{R}_{\mathcal{C}}(m,n)$ with respect to $\mathcal{C}$ to be the minimal number of vertices $r$ such that every induced subgraph of an arbitrary partial order graph consisting of $r$ vertices contains either a complete $n$-clique $K_n$ or an independent set consisting of $m$ vertices. In this paper, we determine the Ramsey number with respect to some classes of partial order graphs. Furthermore, some implications of Ramsey numbers in ring theory are discussed.
Tournaments and the Strong Erdős-Hajnal Property
Published • View Publication • BIB
A conjecture of Alon, Pach and Solymosi, which is equivalent to the celebrated Erdős-Hajnal Conjecture, states that for every tournament $S$ there exists $ε(S)>0$ such that if $T$ is an $n$-vertex tournament that does not contains $S$ as a subtournament, then $T$ contains a transitive subtournament on at least $n^{ε(S)}$ vertices. Let $C_5$ be the unique five-vertex tournament where every vertex has two inneighbors and two outneighbors. The Alon-Pach-Solymosi conjecture is known to be true for the case when $S=C_5$. Here we prove a strengthening of this result, showing that in every tournament $T$ with no subtorunament isomorphic to $C_5$ there exist disjoint vertex subsets $A$ and $B$, each containing a linear proportion of the vertices of $T$, and such that every vertex of $A$ is adjacent to every vertex of $B$.
