A new infinite family of star normal quotient graphs of twisted wreath type
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct the first infinite families of locally arc transitive graphs with the property that the automorphism group has two orbits on vertices and is quasiprimitive on exactly one orbit, of twisted wreath type. This work contributes to Giudici, Li and Praeger's program for the classification of locally arc transitive graphs by showing that the star normal quotient twisted wreath category also contains infinitely many graphs.

Stable and metastable contract networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a hypergraph (I,C), with possible multiple (hyper)edges and loops, in which the vertices $i\in I$ are interpreted as agents, and the edges $c\in C$ as contracts that can be concluded between agents. The preferences of each agent i concerning the contracts where i takes part are given by use of a choice function $f_i$ possessing the so-called path independent property. In this general setup we introduce the notion of stable network of contracts. The paper contains two main results. The first one is that a general problem on stable systems of contracts for (I,C,f) is reduced to a set of special ones in which preferences of agents are described by use of so-called weak orders, or utility functions. However, for a special case of this sort, the stability may not exist. Trying to overcome this trouble when dealing with such special cases, we introduce a weaker notion of metastability for systems of contracts. Our second result is that a metastable system always exists.

The $m$-bipartite Ramsey number of the $K_{2,2}$ versus $K_{6,6}$
Given bipartite graphs $G_1, \ldots, G_n$, the bipartite Ramsey number $BR(G_1,\ldots, G_n)$ is the last integer $b$ such that any complete bipartite graph $K_{b,b}$ with edges coloured with colours $1,2,\ldots,n$ contains a copy of some $G_i$ ($1\leq i\leq n$) where all edges of $G_i$ have colour $i$. As another view of bipartite Ramsey numbers, for given bipartite graphs $G_1, \ldots, G_n$ and a positive integer $m$, the $m$-bipartite Ramsey number $BR_m(G_1, \ldots, G_n)$, is defined as the least integer $b$, such that any complete bipartite graph $K_{m,b}$ with edges coloured with colours $1,2,\ldots,n$ contains a copy of some $G_i$ ($1\leq i\leq n$) where all edges of $G_i$ have colour $i$. The size of $BR_m(G_1, G_2)$, where $G_1=K_{2,2}$ and $G_2\in \{K_{3,3}, K_{4,4}\}$ for each $m$ and the size of $BR_m(K_{3,3}, K_{3,3})$ and $BR_m(K_{2,2}, K_{5,5})$ for special values of $m$, have been determined in several article up to now. In this article, we compute the size of $BR_m(K_{2,2}, K_{6,6})$ for some $m\geq 2$.

Weighted Erdős-Burgess and Davenport constant in commutative rings
Let $R$ be a finite commutative unitary ring. An idempotent in $R$ is an element $e\in R$ with $e^2=e$. Let $Ψ$ be a subgroup of the group ${\rm Aut}(R)$ of all automorphisms of $R$. The $Ψ-$weighted Erdős-Burgess constant ${\rm I}_Ψ(R)$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that every sequence over $R$ of length at least $\ell$ must contain a nonempty subsequence $a_1,\ldots, a_{r}$ such that $\prod\limits_{i=1}^r ψ_i(a_i)$ is one idempotent of $R$ where $ψ_1,\ldots,ψ_r\in Ψ$. In this paper, for the finite quotient ring of a Dedekind domain $R$, a connection is established between the $Ψ-$weighted-Erdős-Burgess constant of $R$ and the $Ψ-$weighted Davenport constant of its group of units by all the prime ideals of $R$.

Exact Matching in Graphs of Bounded Independence Number
In the Exact Matching Problem (EM), we are given a graph equipped with a fixed coloring of its edges with two colors (red and blue), as well as a positive integer $k$. The task is then to decide whether the given graph contains a perfect matching exactly $k$ of whose edges have color red. EM generalizes several important algorithmic problems such as perfect matching and restricted minimum weight spanning tree problems. When introducing the problem in 1982, Papadimitriou and Yannakakis conjectured EM to be $\textbf{NP}$-complete. Later however, Mulmuley et al.~presented a randomized polynomial time algorithm for EM, which puts EM in $\textbf{RP}$. Given that to decide whether or not $\textbf{RP}=\textbf{P}$ represents a big open challenge in complexity theory, this makes it unlikely for EM to be $\textbf{NP}$-complete, and in fact indicates the possibility of a deterministic polynomial time algorithm. EM remains one of the few natural combinatorial problems in $\textbf{RP}$ which are not known to be contained in $\textbf{P}$, making it an interesting instance for testing the hypothesis $\textbf{RP}=\textbf{P}$. Despite EM being quite well-known, attempts to devise deterministic polynomial algorithms have remained illusive during the last 40 years and progress has been lacking even for very restrictive classes of input graphs. In this paper we finally push the frontier of positive results forward by proving that EM can be solved in deterministic polynomial time for input graphs of bounded independence number, and for bipartite input graphs of bounded bipartite independence number. This generalizes previous positive results for complete (bipartite) graphs which were the only known results for EM on dense graphs.

Odd coloring of sparse graphs and planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An {\it odd $c$-coloring} of a graph is a proper $c$-coloring such that each non-isolated vertex has a color appearing an odd number of times on its neighborhood. This concept was introduced very recently by Petru\v sevski and \v Skrekovski and has attracted considerable attention. Cranston investigated odd colorings of graphs with bounded maximum average degree, and conjectured that every graph $G$ with $mad(G)\leq \frac{4c-4}{c+1}$ has an odd $c$-coloring for $c\geq 4$, and proved the conjecture for $c\in\{5, 6\}$. In particular, planar graphs with girth at least $7$ and $6$ have an odd $5$-coloring and an odd $6$-coloring, respectively. We completely resolve Cranston's conjecture. For $c\geq 7$, we show that the conjecture is true, in a stronger form that was implicitly suggested by Cranston, but for $c=4$, we construct counterexamples, which all contain $5$-cycles. On the other hand, we show that a graph $G$ with $mad(G)<\frac{22}{9}$ and no induced $5$-cycles has an odd $4$-coloring. This implies that a planar graph with girth at least 11 has an odd $4$-coloring. We also prove that a planar graph with girth at least 5 has an odd $6$-coloring.
Induced Disjoint Paths and Connected Subgraphs for $H$-Free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Paths $P_1,\ldots, P_k$ in a graph $G=(V,E)$ are mutually induced if any two distinct $P_i$ and $P_j$ have neither common vertices nor adjacent vertices. The Induced Disjoint Paths problem is to decide if a graph $G$ with $k$ pairs of specified vertices $(s_i,t_i)$ contains $k$ mutually induced paths $P_i$ such that each $P_i$ starts from $s_i$ and ends at $t_i$. This is a classical graph problem that is NP-complete even for $k=2$. We introduce a natural generalization, Induced Disjoint Connected Subgraphs: instead of connecting pairs of terminals, we must connect sets of terminals. We give almost-complete dichotomies of the computational complexity of both problems for H-free graphs, that is, graphs that do not contain some fixed graph H as an induced subgraph. Finally, we give a complete classification of the complexity of the second problem if the number k of terminal sets is fixed, that is, not part of the input.

Minimally globally rigid graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G = (V,E)$ is globally rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$ if for any generic placement $p : V \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^d$ of the vertices, the edge lengths $||p(u) - p(v)||, uv \in E$ uniquely determine $p$, up to congruence. In this paper we consider minimally globally rigid graphs, in which the deletion of an arbitrary edge destroys global rigidity. We prove that if $G=(V,E)$ is minimally globally rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$ on at least $d+2$ vertices, then $|E|\leq (d+1)|V|-\binom{d+2}{2}$. This implies that the minimum degree of $G$ is at most $2d+1$. We also show that the only graph in which the upper bound on the number of edges is attained is the complete graph $K_{d+2}$. It follows that every minimally globally rigid graph in $\mathbb{R}^d$ on at least $d+3$ vertices is flexible in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$. As a counterpart to our main result on the sparsity of minimally globally rigid graphs, we show that in two dimensions, dense graphs always contain nontrivial globally rigid subgraphs. More precisely, if some graph $G=(V,E)$ satisfies $|E|\geq 5|V|$, then $G$ contains a subgraph on at least seven vertices that is globally rigid in $\mathbb{R}^2$. If the well-known "sufficient connectivity conjecture" is true, then our methods also extend to higher dimensions. Finally, we discuss a conjectured strengthening of our main result, which states that if a pair of vertices $\{u,v\}$ is linked in $G$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$, then $\{u,v\}$ is globally linked in $G$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove this conjecture in the $d=1,2$ cases, along with a variety of related results.

Almost Disjoint Paths and Separating by Forbidden Pairs
Published • View Publication • BIB
By Menger's theorem the maximum number of arc-disjoint paths from a vertex s to a vertex t in a directed graph equals the minumum number of arcs needed to disconnect s and t, i.e., the minimum size of an s-t-cut. The max-flow problem in a network with unit capacities is equivalent to the arc-disjoint paths problem. Moreover the max-flow and min-cut problems form a strongly dual pair. We relax the disjointedness requirement on the paths, allowing them to be almost disjoint, meaning they may share up to one arc. The resulting almost disjoint paths problem (ADP) asks for k s-t-paths such that any two of them are almost disjoint. The separating by forbidden pairs problem (SFP) is the corresponding dual problem and calls for a set of k arc pairs such that every s-t-path contains both arcs of at least one such pair. In this paper, we explore these two problems, showing that they have an unbounded duality gap in general and analyzing their complexity. We prove that ADP is NP-complete when k is part of the input and that SFP is Sigma_2P-complete, even for acyclic graphs. Furthermore, we efficiently solve ADP when k<=2 is fixed and present a polynomial time algorithm based on dynamic programming for ADP when k is constant and the considered graphs are acyclic.

How to Physically Verify a Rectangle in a Grid: A Physical ZKP for Shikaku
Published • View Publication • BIB
Shikaku is a pencil puzzle consisting of a rectangular grid, with some cells containing a number. The player has to partition the grid into rectangles such that each rectangle contains exactly one number equal to the area of that rectangle. In this paper, we propose two physical zero-knowledge proof protocols for Shikaku using a deck of playing cards, which allow a prover to physically show that he/she knows a solution of the puzzle without revealing it. Most importantly, in our second protocol we develop a general technique to physically verify a rectangle-shaped area with a certain size in a rectangular grid, which can be used to verify other problems with similar constraints.

A graph is said to be \textit{$H$-minor free} if it does not contain $H$ as a minor. In this paper, we characteristic the unique extremal graph with maximal $Q$-index among all $n$-vertex $K_{1,t}$-minor free graphs ($t\ge3$).

The cost of symmetry in connected graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The paper answers the question posed in a joint paper by A. A. Klyachko and N. M. Luneva about the optimality of the estimate for the cost of symmetry in graphs. The original estimate says that if n vertices can be removed from a connected graph so that there is no connected subgraph of isomorphic $Γ$ left in it, then at most $n|V(Γ)|$ vertices that form a set invariant under all automorphisms of the graph so that the graph does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $Γ$. We will prove that there exists a graph $Γ$ for which this estimate is not optimal.

The $m$-bipartite Ramsey number $BR_m(K_{2,2},K_{5,5})$
The bipartite Ramsey number $BR(H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_k)$, is the smallest positive integer $b$, such that each $k$-decomposition of $E(K_{b,b})$ contains $H_i$ in the $i$-th class for some $i, 1\leq i\leq k$. As another view of bipartite Ramsey numbers, for given two bipartite graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$ and a positive integer $m$, the $m$-bipartite Ramsey number $BR_m(H_1, H_2)$, is defined as the least integer $n$, such that any subgraph of $K_{m,n}$ say $H$, results in $H_1\subseteq H$ or $H_2\subseteq \overline{H}$. The size of $BR_m(K_{2,2}, K_{3,3})$, $BR_m(K_{2,2}, K_{4,4})$ for each $m$, and the size of $BR_m(K_{3,3}, K_{3,3})$ for some $m$, have been determined in several papers up to now. Also, it is shown that $BR(K_{2,2}, K_{5,5})=17$. In this article, we compute the size of $BR_m(K_{2,2}, K_{5,5})$ for some $m\geq 2$.
Polynomial bounds for chromatic number VII. Disjoint holes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A hole in a graph $G$ is an induced cycle of length at least four, and a $k$-multihole in $G$ is a set of pairwise disjoint and nonadjacent holes. It is well known that if $G$ does not contain any holes then its chromatic number is equal to its clique number. In this paper we show that, for any $k$, if $G$ does not contain a $k$-multihole, then its chromatic number is at most a polynomial function of its clique number. We show that the same result holds if we ask for all the holes to be odd or of length four; and if we ask for the holes to be longer than any fixed constant or of length four. This is part of a broader study of graph classes that are polynomially $χ$-bounded.

Recoloring Unit Interval Graphs with Logarithmic Recourse Budget
In this paper we study the problem of coloring a unit interval graph which changes dynamically. In our model the unit intervals are added or removed one at the time, and have to be colored immediately, so that no two overlapping intervals share the same color. After each update only a limited number of intervals is allowed to be recolored. The limit on the number of recolorings per update is called the recourse budget. In this paper we show, that if the graph remains $k$-colorable at all times, and the updates consist of insertions only, then we can achieve the amortized recourse budget of $O(k^7 \log n)$ while maintaining a proper coloring with $k$ colors. This is an exponential improvement over the result in [Bosek et al., Recoloring Interval Graphs with Limited Recourse Budget. SWAT 2020] in terms of both $k$ and $n$. We complement this result by showing the lower bound of $Ω(n)$ on the amortized recourse budget in the fully dynamic setting. Our incremental algorithm can be efficiently implemented. As a byproduct of independent interest we include a new result on coloring proper circular arc graphs. Let $L$ be the maximum number of arcs intersecting in one point for some set of unit circular arcs $\mathcal{A}$. We show that if there is a set $\mathcal{A}'$ of non-intersecting unit arcs of size $L^2-1$ such that $\mathcal{A} \cup \mathcal{A}'$ does not contain $L+1$ arcs intersecting in one point, then it is possible to color $\mathcal{A}$ with $L$ colors. This complements the work on unit circular arc coloring, which specifies sufficient conditions needed to color $\mathcal{A}$ with $L+1$ colors or more.

Saturation for the $3$-uniform loose $3$-cycle
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F$ and $H$ be $k$-uniform hypergraphs. We say $H$ is $F$-saturated if $H$ does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $F$, but $H+e$ does for any hyperedge $e\not\in E(H)$. The saturation number of $F$, denoted $\mathrm{sat}_k(n,F)$, is the minimum number of edges in a $F$-saturated $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices. Let $C_3^{(3)}$ denote the $3$-uniform loose cycle on $3$ edges. In this work, we prove that \[ \left(\frac{4}3+o(1)\right)n\leq \mathrm{sat}_3(n,C_3^{(3)})\leq \frac{3}2n+O(1). \] This is the first non-trivial result on the saturation number for a fixed short hypergraph cycle.
Testing idealness in the filter oracle model
Published • View Publication • BIB
A filter oracle for a clutter consists of a finite set $V$ along with an oracle which, given any set $X\subseteq V$, decides in unit time whether or not $X$ contains a member of the clutter. Let $\mathfrak{A}_{2n}$ be an algorithm that, given any clutter $\mathcal{C}$ over $2n$ elements via a filter oracle, decides whether or not $\mathcal{C}$ is ideal. We prove that in the worst case, $\mathfrak{A}_{2n}$ must make at least $2^n$ calls to the filter oracle. Our proof uses the theory of cuboids.

In~\cite{algorithmic} was given an algorithm that computes arithmetical structures on matrices. We use some of the ideas contained there to get an algorithm that computes arithmetical structures over dominated polynomials. A dominated polynomial is an integer multivariate polynomial such that contains a monomial which is divided by all its monomials.

A characterization of $g_2$-minimal normal 3-pseudomanifolds with at most four singularities
Published in Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal. 64 (2024), no. 2, 479 -- 491 • View Publication • BIB
Let $Δ$ be a $g_2$-minimal normal 3-pseudomanifold. A vertex in $Δ$ whose link is not a sphere is called a singular vertex. When $Δ$ contains at most two singular vertices, its combinatorial characterization is known [9]. In this article, we present a combinatorial characterization of such a $Δ$ when it has three singular vertices, including one $\mathbb{RP}^2$-singularity, or four singular vertices, including two $\mathbb{RP}^2$-singularities. In both cases, we prove that $Δ$ is obtained from a one-vertex suspension of a surface, and some boundary complexes of $4$-simplices by applying the combinatorial operations of types connected sums, vertex foldings, and edge foldings.
Structured Codes of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the maximum size of graph families on a common vertex set of cardinality $n$ such that the symmetric difference of the edge sets of any two members of the family satisfies some prescribed condition. We solve the problem completely for infinitely many values of $n$ when the prescribed condition is connectivity or $2$-connectivity, Hamiltonicity or the containment of a spanning star. We also investigate local conditions that can be certified by looking at only a subset of the vertex set. In these cases a capacity-type asymptotic invariant is defined and when the condition is to contain a certain subgraph this invariant is shown to be a simple function of the chromatic number of this required subgraph. This is proven using classical results from extremal graph theory. Several variants are considered and the paper ends with a collection of open problems.
