We show that every graph with pathwidth strictly less than $a$ that contains no path on $2^b$ vertices as a subgraph has treedepth at most $10ab$. The bound is best possible up to a constant factor.
Minimum degree thresholds for Hamilton $(\ell,k-\ell)$-cycles in $k$-uniform hypergraphs
Let $n>k>\ell$ be positive integers. We say a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ contains a Hamilton $(\ell,k-\ell)$-cycle if there is a partition $(L_0,R_0,L_1,R_1,\ldots,L_{t-1},R_{t-1})$ of $V(\mathcal{H})$ with $|L_i|=\ell$, $|R_i|=k-\ell$ such that $L_i\cup R_i$ and $R_i\cup L_{i+1}$ (subscripts module $t$) are all edges of $\mathcal{H}$ for $i=0,1,\ldots,t-1$. In the present paper, we determine the tight minimum $\ell$-degree condition that guarantees the existence of a Hamilton $(\ell,k-\ell)$-cycle in every $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph for $k\geq 7$, $k/2\leq \ell\leq k-1$ and sufficiently large $n\in k\mathbb{N}$.
Rich Words in the Block Reversal of a Word

The block reversal of a word $w$, denoted by $\mathtt{BR}(w)$, is a generalization of the concept of the reversal of a word, obtained by concatenating the blocks of the word in the reverse order. We characterize non-binary and binary words whose block reversal contains only rich words. We prove that for a binary word $w$, richness of all elements of $\mathtt{BR}(w)$ depends on $l(w)$, the length of the run sequence of $w$. We show that if all elements of $\mathtt{BR}(w)$ are rich, then $2\leq l(w)\leq 8$. We also provide the structure of such words.
An Alon-Tarsi Style Theorem for Additive Colorings

We first give an alternative proof of the Alon-Tarsi list coloring theorem. We use the ideas from this proof to obtain the following result, which is an additive coloring analog of the Alon-Tarsi Theorem: Let $G$ be a graph and let $D$ be an orientation of $G$. We introduce a new digraph $\mathcal{W}(D)$, such that if the out-degree in $D$ of each vertex $v$ is $d_v$, and if the number of Eulerian subdigraphs of $\mathcal{W}(D)$ with an even number of edges differs from the number of Eulerian subdigraphs of $\mathcal{W}(D)$ with an odd number of edges, then for any assignment of lists $L(v)$ of $d_v+1$ positive integers to the vertices of $G$, there is an additive coloring of $G$ assigning to each vertex $v$ an element from $L(v)$. As an application, we prove an additive list coloring result for tripartite graphs $G$ such that one of the color classes of $G$ contains only vertices whose neighborhoods are complete.
On 2-strong connectivity orientations of mixed graphs and related problems

A mixed graph $G$ is a graph that consists of both undirected and directed edges. An orientation of $G$ is formed by orienting all the undirected edges of $G$, i.e., converting each undirected edge $\{u,v\}$ into a directed edge that is either $(u,v)$ or $(v,u)$. The problem of finding an orientation of a mixed graph that makes it strongly connected is well understood and can be solved in linear time. Here we introduce the following orientation problem in mixed graphs. Given a mixed graph $G$, we wish to compute its maximal sets of vertices $C_1,C_2,\ldots,C_k$ with the property that by removing any edge $e$ from $G$ (directed or undirected), there is an orientation $R_i$ of $G\setminus{e}$ such that all vertices in $C_i$ are strongly connected in $R_i$. We discuss properties of those sets, and we show how to solve this problem in linear time by reducing it to the computation of the $2$-edge twinless strongly connected components of a directed graph. A directed graph $G=(V,E)$ is twinless strongly connected if it contains a strongly connected spanning subgraph without any pair of antiparallel (or twin) edges. The twinless strongly connected components (TSCCs) of a directed graph $G$ are its maximal twinless strongly connected subgraphs. A $2$-edge twinless strongly connected component (2eTSCC) of $G$ is a maximal subset of vertices $C$ such that any two vertices $u, v \in C$ are in the same twinless strongly connected component of $G \setminus e$, for any edge $e$. These concepts are motivated by several diverse applications, such as the design of road and telecommunication networks, and the structural stability of buildings.
Acyclic Chromatic Index of Chordless Graphs

An acyclic edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring in which there are no bichromatic cycles. The acyclic chromatic index of a graph $G$ denoted by $a'(G)$, is the minimum positive integer $k$ such that $G$ has an acyclic edge coloring with $k$ colors. It has been conjectured by Fiamčík that $a'(G) \le Δ+2$ for any graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$. Linear arboricity of a graph $G$, denoted by $la(G)$, is the minimum number of linear forests into which the edges of $G$ can be partitioned. A graph is said to be chordless if no cycle in the graph contains a chord. Every $2$-connected chordless graph is a minimally $2$-connected graph. It was shown by Basavaraju and Chandran that if $G$ is $2$-degenerate, then $a'(G) \le Δ+1$. Since chordless graphs are also $2$-degenerate, we have $a'(G) \le Δ+1$ for any chordless graph $G$. Machado, de Figueiredo and Trotignon proved that the chromatic index of a chordless graph is $Δ$ when $Δ\ge 3$. They also obtained a polynomial time algorithm to color a chordless graph optimally. We improve this result by proving that the acyclic chromatic index of a chordless graph is $Δ$, except when $Δ=2$ and the graph has a cycle, in which case it is $Δ+1$. We also provide the sketch of a polynomial time algorithm for an optimal acyclic edge coloring of a chordless graph. As a byproduct, we also prove that $la(G) = \lceil \frac{Δ}{2} \rceil$, unless $G$ has a cycle with $Δ=2$, in which case $la(G) = \lceil \frac{Δ+1}{2} \rceil = 2$. To obtain the result on acyclic chromatic index, we prove a structural result on chordless graphs which is a refinement of the structure given by Machado, de Figueiredo and Trotignon for this class of graphs. This might be of independent interest.
Rainbow triangles sharing one common vertex or edge

Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices. For a vertex $v$, the \emph{color degree} of $v$ in $G$, denoted by $d^c(v)$, is the number of colors appearing on the edges incident with $v$. Denote by $δ^c(G)=\min\{d^c(v):v\in V(G)\}$. By a theorem of H. Li, an $n$-vertex edge-colored graph $G$ contains a rainbow triangle if $δ^c(G)\geq \frac{n+1}{2}$. Inspired by this result, we consider two related questions concerning edge-colored books and friendship subgraphs of edge-colored graphs. Let $k\geq 2$ be a positive integer. We prove that if $δ^c(G)\geq \frac{n+k-1}{2}$ where $n\geq 3k-2$, then $G$ contains $k$ rainbow triangles sharing one common edge; and if $δ^c(G)\geq \frac{n+2k-3}{2}$ where $n\geq 2k+9$, then $G$ contains $k$ rainbow triangles sharing one common vertex. The special case $k=2$ of both results improves H. Li's theorem. The main novelty of our proof of the first result is a combination of the recent new technique for finding rainbow cycles due to Czygrinow, Molla, Nagle, and Oursler and some recent counting technique from \cite{LNSZ}. The proof of the second result is with the aid of the machine implicitly in the work of Turán numbers for matching numbers due to Erdős and Gallai.
The Minimum Degree Removal Lemma Thresholds

The graph removal lemma is a fundamental result in extremal graph theory which says that for every fixed graph $H$ and $\varepsilon > 0$, if an $n$-vertex graph $G$ contains $\varepsilon n^2$ edge-disjoint copies of $H$ then $G$ contains $δn^{v(H)}$ copies of $H$ for some $δ= δ(\varepsilon,H) > 0$. The current proofs of the removal lemma give only very weak bounds on $δ(\varepsilon,H)$, and it is also known that $δ(\varepsilon,H)$ is not polynomial in $\varepsilon$ unless $H$ is bipartite. Recently, Fox and Wigderson initiated the study of minimum degree conditions guaranteeing that $δ(\varepsilon,H)$ depends polynomially or linearly on $\varepsilon$. In this paper we answer several questions of Fox and Wigderson on this topic.

In this paper, we study problems about the similar configurations in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$. Let $G=(V, E)$ be a graph, where $V=\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}$ and $E\subseteq{V\choose2}$. For a set $\mathcal{E}$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$, we say that $\mathcal{E}$ contains a pair of $G$ with dilation ratio $r$ if there exist distinct $\boldsymbol{x}_1, \boldsymbol{x}_2, \ldots, \boldsymbol{x}_n\in\mathcal{E}$ and distinct $\boldsymbol{y}_1, \boldsymbol{y}_2, \ldots, \boldsymbol{y}_n\in\mathcal{E}$ such that $\|\boldsymbol{y}_i-\boldsymbol{y}_{j}\|=r\|\boldsymbol{x}_i-\boldsymbol{x}_j\|\neq0$ whenever $\{i, j\}\in E$, where $\|\boldsymbol{x}\|:=x_1^2+x_2^2+\cdots+x_d^2$ for $\boldsymbol{x}=(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_d)\in\mathbb{F}_q^d$. We show that if $\mathcal{E}$ has size at least $C_kq^{d/2}$, then $\mathcal{E}$ contains a pair of $k$-stars with dilation ratio $r$, and that if $\mathcal{E}$ has size at least $C\cdot\min\left\{q^{(2d+1)/3}, \max\left\{q^3, q^{d/2}\right\}\right\}$, then $\mathcal{E}$ contains a pair of $4$-paths with dilation ratio $r$. Our method is based on enumerative combinatorics and graph theory.

In order to do so, we first prove that every connected $P_5$-free graph $G$ with independence number at least three contains a three-vertex induced path with vertices $a \hbox{-} b \hbox{-} c$ in order, such that every neighbour of $c$ is also adjacent to one of $a,b$.

Let $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ be a convex body and let $\mathbf{w} \in \operatorname{int}(K)$ be an interior point of $K$. The coefficient of asymmetry $\operatorname{ca}(K,\mathbf{w}) := \min\{ λ\geq 1 : \mathbf{w} - K \subseteq λ(K - \mathbf{w}) \}$ has been studied extensively in the realm of Hensley's conjecture on the maximal volume of a $d$-dimensional lattice polytope that contains a fixed positive number of interior lattice points. We study the coefficient of asymmetry for lattice zonotopes, i.e., Minkowski sums of line segments with integer endpoints. Our main result gives the existence of an interior lattice point whose coefficient of asymmetry is bounded above by an explicit constant in $Θ(d \log\log d)$, for any lattice zonotope that has an interior lattice point. Our work is both inspired by and feeds on Wills' lonely runner conjecture from Diophantine approximation: we make intensive use of a discrete version of this conjecture, and reciprocally, we reformulate the lonely runner conjecture in terms of the coefficient of asymmetry of a zonotope.
On the Toughness of Regular Graphs and Prisms
We contribute results on $r$-regular graphs that do and don't have the maximum possible toughness, namely $r/2$. Doty and Ferland showed the existence of a $5$-regular graph with toughness $5/2$ for all even orders except $n= 18$. Using a computer search we show that there does not exist such a graph for $n=18$. Also, we provide the first family of $4$-regular graphs with toughness $2$ that contains claws. For the prism $G \Box K_2$ of a graph~$G$, we provide several bounds including a sufficient condition for the prism to have the same toughness as~$G$. In particular, we show that if $G$ has toughness $t\le \frac{1}{2}$ then its prism has toughness $2t$; further, the prism of any $r$-regular $r$-connected inflation has toughness~$r/2$ (despite being $(r+1)$-regular) and in general the prism of any $3$-regular graph has toughness at most~$3/2$.

We consider the posets of equivalence relations on finite sets under the standard embedding ordering and under the consecutive embedding ordering. In the latter case, the relations are also assumed to have an underlying linear order, which governs consecutive embeddings. For each poset we ask the well quasi-order and atomicity decidability questions: Given finitely many equivalence relations $ρ_1,\dots,ρ_k$, is the downward closed set Av$(ρ_1,\dots,ρ_k)$ consisting of all equivalence relations which do not contain any of $ρ_1,\dots,ρ_k$: (a) well-quasi-ordered, meaning that it contains no infinite antichains? and (b) atomic, meaning that it is not a union of two proper downward closed subsets, or, equivalently, that it satisfies the joint embedding property?

Let $Δ=Δ_1\times\ldots\times Δ_d\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, where $\mathbb{R}^n=\mathbb{R}^{n_1}\times\cdots\times\mathbb{R}^{n_d}$ with each $Δ_i\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n_i}$ a non-degenerate simplex of $n_i$ points.
We prove that any set $S\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, with $n=n_1+\cdots +n_d$ of positive upper Banach density necessarily contains an isometric copy of all sufficiently large dilates of the configuration $Δ$. In particular any such set $S\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{2d}$ contains a $d$-dimensional cube of side length $λ$, for all $λ\geq λ_0(S)$.
We also prove analogous results with the underlying space being the integer lattice. The proof is based on a weak hypergraph regularity lemma and an associated counting lemma developed in the context of Euclidean spaces and the integer lattice.
On the rainbow planar Turán number of paths
An edge-colored graph is said to contain a rainbow-$F$ if it contains $F$ as a subgraph and every edge of $F$ is a distinct color. The problem of maximizing edges among $n$-vertex properly edge-colored graphs not containing a rainbow-$F$, known as the rainbow Turán problem, was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We investigate a variation of this problem with the additional restriction that the graph is planar, and we denote the corresponding extremal number by $\ex_{\p}^*(n,F)$. In particular, we determine $\ex_{\p}^*(n,P_5)$, where $P_5$ denotes the $5$-vertex path.
Strongly proper connected coloring of graphs
We study a new variant of \emph{connected coloring} of graphs based on the concept of \emph{strong} edge coloring (every color class forms an \emph{induced} matching). In particular, an edge-colored path is \emph{strongly proper} if its color sequence does not contain identical terms within a distance of at most two. A \emph{strong proper connected} coloring of $G$ is the one in which every pair of vertices is joined by at least one strongly proper path. Let spc($G$) denote the least number of colors needed for such coloring of a graph $G$. We prove that the upper bound spc($G$)$\leq${5} holds for any $2$-connected graph $G$. On the other hand, we demonstrate that there are $2$-connected graphs with arbitrarily large girth satisfying spc($G$)$\geq${4}. Additionally, we prove that graphs whose cycle lengths are divisible by $3$ satisfy spc($G$)$\leq{3}$. We also consider briefly other connected colorings defined by various restrictions on color sequences of connecting paths. For instance, in a \emph{nonrepetitive connected coloring} of $G$, every pair of vertices should be joined by a path whose color sequence is \emph{nonrepetitive}, that is, it does not contain two adjacent identical blocks. We demonstrate that $2$-connected graphs are $15$-colorable while $4$-connected graphs are $6$-colorable, in the connected nonrepetitive sense. A similar conclusion with a finite upper bound on the number of colors holds for a much wider variety of connected colorings corresponding to fairly general properties of sequences. We end the paper with some open problems of concrete and general nature.
Exploring spaces of semi-directed phylogenetic networks

Semi-directed phylogenetic networks have recently emerged as a class of phylogenetic networks sitting between rooted (directed) and unrooted (undirected) phylogenetic networks as they contain both directed as well as undirected edges. While the spaces of rooted phylogenetic networks and unrooted phylogenetic networks have been analyzed in recent years and various rearrangement moves to traverse these spaces have been introduced, the results do not immediately carry over to semi-directed phylogenetic networks. Here, we propose a simple rearrangement move for semi-directed phylogenetic networks, called cut edge transfer (CET), and show that the space of semi-directed level-$1$ networks with precisely $k$ reticulations is connected under CET. This level-$1$ space is currently the predominantly used search space for most algorithms that reconstruct semi-directed phylogenetic networks. Hence, every semi-directed level-$1$ network with a fixed number of reticulations and leaf set can be reached from any other such network by a sequence of CETs. By introducing two additional moves, CET$^+$ and CET$^-$, that allow for the addition or deletion of reticulations, we then establish connectedness for the space of all semi-directed phylogenetic networks on a fixed leaf set. As a byproduct of our results for semi-directed phylogenetic networks, we also show that the space of rooted level-$1$ networks with a fixed number of reticulations and leaf set is connected under CET, when translated into the rooted setting.
