Calculating the maximum number of maximum cliques for simple graphs
A simple graph on $n$ vertices may contain a lot of maximum cliques. But how many can it potentially contain? We will define prime and composite graphs, and we will show that if $n \ge 15$, then the grpahs with the maximum number of maximum cliques have to be composite. Moreover, we will show an edge bound from which we will prove that if any factor of a composite graph has $ω(G_i) \ge 5$, then it cannot have the maximum number of maximum cliques. Using this we will show that the graph that contains $3^{\lfloor n/3 \rfloor}c$ maximum cliques has the most number of maximum cliques on $n$ vertices, where $c\in\{1,\frac{4}{3},2\}$, depending on $n \text{ mod } 3$.

Induced paths in strongly regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper studies induced paths in strongly regular graphs. We give an elementary proof that a strongly regular graph contains a path $P_4$ as an induced subgraph if and only if it is primitive, i.e. it is neither a complete multipartite graph nor its complement. Also, we investigate when a strongly regular graph has an induced subgraph isomorphic to $P_5$ or its complement, considering several well-known families including Johnson and Kneser graphs, Hamming graphs, Latin square graphs, and block-intersection graphs of Steiner triple systems.

Convex minorant trees associated with Brownian paths and the continuum limit of the minimum spanning tree
We give an explicit construction of the scaling limit of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph. The limit object is described using a recursive construction involving the convex minorants of a Brownian motion with parabolic drift (and countably many i.i.d. uniform random variables); we call it the Brownian parabolic tree. Aside from the new representation, this point of view has multiple consequences. For instance, it permits us to prove that its Hausdorff dimension is almost surely 3. It also intrinsically contains information related to some underlying dynamics: one notable by-product is the construction of a standard metric multiplicative coalescent which couples the scaling limits of random graphs at different points of the critical window in terms of the same simple building blocks. The above results actually fit in a more general framework. They result from the introduction of a new family of continuum random trees associated with functions via their convex minorants, that we call convex minorant trees. We initiate the study of these structures in the case of Brownian-like paths. In passing, we prove that the convex minorant tree of a Brownian excursion is a Brownian continuum ranndom tree, and that it provides a coupling between the Aldous--Pitman fragmentation of the Brownian continuum random tree and its representation by Bertoin.

Extremal problems for a matching and any other graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a family of graphs $\F$, a graph is called $\F$-free if it does not contain any member of $\F$ as a subgraph. The generalized Turán number $\ex(n,K_r,\F)$ is the maximum number of $K_r$ in an $n$-vertex $\F$-free graph and $\ex(n,K_2,\F)=\ex(n,\F)$, i.e., the classical Turán number. Let $M_{s+1}$ be a matching on $s+1$ edges and $F$ be any graph. In this paper, we determine $\ex(n,K_r, \{M_{s+1},F\})$ apart from a constant additive term and also give a condition when the error constant term can be determined. In particular, we give the exact value of $\ex(n,\{M_{s+1},F\})$ for $F$ being any non-bipartite graph or some bipartite graphs. Furthermore, we determine $\ex(n,K_r,\{M_{s+1},F\})$ when $F$ is color critical with $χ(F)\ge \max\{r+1,4\}$. These extend the results in [2,11,18].

Hitting sets and colorings of hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the minimal size of edges in hypergraph families that guarantees the existence of a polychromatic coloring, that is, a $k$-coloring of a vertex set such that every hyperedge contains a vertex of all $k$ color classes. We also investigate the connection of this problem with $c$-shallow hitting sets: sets of vertices that intersect each hyperedge in at least one and at most $c$ vertices. We determine for some hypergraph families the minimal $c$ for which a $c$-shallow hitting set exists. We also study this problem for a special hypergraph family, which is induced by arithmetic progressions with a difference from a given set. We show connections between some geometric hypergraph families and the latter, and prove relations between the set of differences and polychromatic colorability.
On the minisymposium problem

The generalized Oberwolfach problem asks for a factorization of the complete graph $K_v$ into prescribed $2$-factors and at most a $1$-factor. When all $2$-factors are pairwise isomorphic and $v$ is odd, we have the classic Oberwolfach problem, which was originally stated as a seating problem: given $v$ attendees at a conference with $t$ circular tables such that the $i$th table seats $a_i$ people and ${\sum_{i=1}^t a_i = v}$, find a seating arrangement over the $\frac{v-1}{2}$ days of the conference, so that every person sits next to each other person exactly once. In this paper we introduce the related {\em minisymposium problem}, which requires a solution to the generalized Oberwolfach problem on $v$ vertices that contains a subsystem on $m$ vertices. That is, the decomposition restricted to the required $m$ vertices is a solution to the generalized Oberwolfach problem on $m$ vertices. In the seating context above, the larger conference contains a minisymposium of $m$ participants, and we also require that pairs of these $m$ participants be seated next to each other for $\left\lfloor\frac{m-1}{2}\right\rfloor$ of the days. When the cycles are as long as possible, i.e.\ $v$, $m$ and $v-m$, a flexible method of Hilton and Johnson provides a solution. We use this result to provide further solutions when $v \equiv m \equiv 2 \pmod 4$ and all cycle lengths are even. In addition, we provide extensive results in the case where all cycle lengths are equal to $k$, solving all cases when $m\mid v$, except possibly when $k$ is odd and $v$ is even.

Monochromatic Sums and Products over $\mathbb{Q}$
Hindman's finite sums theorem states that in any finite coloring of the naturals, there is an infinite sequence all of whose finite subset sums are the same color. In 1979, Hindman showed that there is a finite coloring of the naturals so that no infinite sequence has all of its pairwise sums and pairwise products the same color. Hindman conjectured that for any $n$, a finite coloring of the naturals contains $n$ numbers all of whose subset sums and subset products are the same color. In this paper we prove the version of this statement where we color the rationals instead of the integers. In other words, we show that the pattern $\{ \sum_{i \in S}x_i, \prod_{i \in S}x_i \}$, where $S$ ranges over all nonempty subsets of $[n]$, is partition regular over the rationals.
Induced $C_4$-free subgraphs with large average degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that there exists a constant $C$ so that, for all $s,k \in \mathbb{N}$, if $G$ has average degree at least $k^{Cs^3}$ and does not contain $K_{s,s}$ as a subgraph then it contains an induced subgraph which is $C_4$-free and has average degree at least $k$. It was known that some function of $s$ and $k$ suffices, but this is the first explicit bound. We give several applications of this result, including short and streamlined proofs of the following two corollaries. We show that there exists a constant $C$ so that, for all $s,k \in \mathbb{N}$, if $G$ has average degree at least $k^{Cs^3}$ and does not contain $K_{s,s}$ as a subgraph then it contains an induced subdivision of $K_k$. This is the first quantitative improvement on a well-known theorem of Kühn and Osthus; their proof gives a bound that is triply exponential in both $k$ and $s$. We also show that for any hereditary degree-bounded class $\mathcal{F}$, there exists a constant $C=C_\mathcal{F}$ so that $C^{s^3}$ is a degree-bounding function for $\mathcal{F}$. This is the first bound of any type on the rate of growth of such functions. It is open whether there is always a polynomial degree-bounding function.
A structural duality for path-decompositions into parts of small radius
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is an easy observation that if a graph~$G$ admits a path-decomposition whose parts have small radius, then $G$ contains no large subdivision of $K_{1,3}$ or $K^3$ as a (quasi-)geodesic subgraph. We show that these are in fact the only obstructions to such path-decompositions of small radial width, and we prove analogous results for decompositions modelled on cycles and subdivided stars instead of paths. With our results we confirm in a strong form a conjecture of Georgakopoulos and Papasoglu on fat-minor-characterisations of graphs quasi-isometric to paths, cycles and paths, and subdivided stars, respectively. For this, we present a novel view on quasi-isometries between graphs by graph-decompositions of bounded radial width and spread. This new perspective enables us to prove further results in coarse graph theory, and may thus be of independent interest.

Colouring Digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this thesis is to investigate how the structure of a digraph affects its dichromatic number and to extend various results on undirected colouring to digraphs. In the first part of this thesis, we examine how the dichromatic number interacts with other metrics. First, we consider the degree, which is the maximum number of neighbours of a vertex. In the undirected case, this corresponds to Brooks' theorem, a celebrated theorem with multiple variations and generalizations. In the directed case, there is no natural metric corresponding to the maximum degree, so we explore how different notions of maximum directed degree lead to either Brooks-like theorems or impossibility results. We also investigate the maximum local-arc connectivity, a metric that encompasses several degree-like metrics. The second part of this manuscript focuses on a directed analogue of the Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture. The Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture tries to characterize sets S of undirected graphs such that graphs with large enough chromatic number must contain a graph of S. This conjecture is still largely open. On digraphs, a corresponding conjecture was proposed by Aboulker, Charbit, and Naserasr. We prove several subcases of this conjecture, mainly demonstrating that certain classes of digraphs have bounded dichromatic number. In the last part of this thesis, we address the d-edge-defective-colouring problem, which involves colouring edges of a multigraph such that, for any vertex, no colour appears on more than d of its incident edges. When d equals one, this corresponds to the infamous edge-colouring problem. Shannon established a tight bound on the number of colours needed relative to the maximum degree when d equals one, and we extend this result to any value of d. We also explore this problem on simple graphs and prove results that extend Vizing's theorem to any value of d.

A stability result for $C_{2k+1}$-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is called $C_{2k+1}$-free if it does not contain any cycle of length $2k+1$. In 1981, Haggkvist, Faudree and Schelp showed that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph with more than $\frac{(n-1)^2}{4}+1$ edges is bipartite. In this paper, we extend their result and show that for $1\leq t\leq 2k-2$ and $n\geq 318t^2k$, every $n$-vertex $C_{2k+1}$-free graph with more than $\frac{(n-t-1)^2}{4}+\binom{t+2}{2}$ edges can be made bipartite by either deleting at most $t-1$ vertices or deleting at most $\binom{\lfloor\frac{t+2}{2}\rfloor}{2}+\binom{\lceil\frac{t+2}{2}\rceil}{2}-1$ edges. The construction shows that this is best possible.

On short edges in complete topological graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $h(n)$ be the minimum integer such that every complete $n$-vertex simple topological graph contains an edge that crosses at most $h(n)$ other edges. In 2009, Kynčl and Valtr showed that $h(n) = O(n^2/\log^{1/4} n)$, and in the other direction, gave constructions showing that $h(n) = Ω(n^{3/2})$. In this paper, we prove that $h(n) = O(n^{7/4})$. Along the way, we establish a new variant of Chazelle and Welzl's matching theorem for set systems with bounded VC-dimension, which we believe to be of independent interest.
Impartial geodetic building games on graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A subset of the vertex set of a graph is geodetically convex if it contains every vertex on any shortest path between two elements of the set. The convex hull of a set of vertices is the smallest convex set containing the set. We study variations of two games introduced by Buckley and Harary, where two players take turns selecting previously-unselected vertices of a graph until the convex hull of the jointly-selected vertices becomes too large. The last player to move is the winner. The achievement game ends when the convex hull contains every vertex. In the avoidance game, the convex hull is not allowed to contain every vertex. We determine the nim-value of these games for several graph families.
Sparse induced subgraphs in P_6-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that a number of computational problems that ask for the largest sparse induced subgraph satisfying some property definable in CMSO2 logic, most notably Feedback Vertex Set, are polynomial-time solvable in the class of $P_6$-free graphs. This generalizes the work of Grzesik, Klimošová, Pilipczuk, and Pilipczuk on the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem in $P_6$-free graphs~[SODA 2019, TALG 2022], and of Abrishami, Chudnovsky, Pilipczuk, Rzążewski, and Seymour on problems in $P_5$-free graphs~[SODA~2021]. The key step is a new generalization of the framework of potential maximal cliques. We show that instead of listing a large family of potential maximal cliques, it is sufficient to only list their carvers: vertex sets that contain the same vertices from the sought solution and have similar separation properties.

The Frobenius transform of a symmetric function
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define an abelian group homomorphism $\mathscr{F}$, which we call the Frobenius transform, from the ring of symmetric functions to the ring of the symmetric power series. The matrix entries of $\mathscr{F}$ in the Schur basis are the restriction coefficients $r_λ^μ= \dim \operatorname{Hom}_{\mathfrak{S}_n}(V_μ, \mathbb{S}^λ\mathbb{C}^n)$, which are known to be nonnegative integers but have no known combinatorial interpretation. The Frobenius transform satisfies the identity $\mathscr{F}\{fg\} = \mathscr{F}\{f\} \ast \mathscr{F}\{g\}$, where $\ast$ is the Kronecker product. We prove for all symmetric functions $f$ that $\mathscr{F}\{f\} = \mathscr{F}_{\mathrm{Sur}}\{f\} \cdot (1 + h_1 + h_2 + \cdots)$, where $\mathscr{F}_{\mathrm{Sur}}\{f\}$ is a symmetric function with the same degree and leading term as $f$. Then, we compute the matrix entries of $\mathscr{F}_{\mathrm{Sur}}\{f\}$ in the complete homogeneous, elementary, and power sum bases and of $\mathscr{F}^{-1}_{\mathrm{Sur}}\{f\}$ in the complete homogeneous and elementary bases, giving combinatorial interpretations of the coefficients where possible. In particular, the matrix entries of $\mathscr{F}^{-1}_{\mathrm{Sur}}\{f\}$ in the elementary basis count words with a constraint on their Lyndon factorization. As an example application of our main results, we prove that $r_λ^μ= 0$ if $|λ\cap \hatμ| < 2|\hatμ| - |λ|$, where $\hatμ$ is the partition formed by removing the first part of $μ$. We also prove that $r_λ^μ= 0$ if the Young diagram of $μ$ contains a square of side length greater than $2^{λ_1 - 1}$, and this inequality is tight.

Katětov order between Hindman, Ramsey, van der Waerden and summable ideals
A family I of subsets of a set X is an ideal on X if it is closed under taking subsets and finite unions of its elements. An ideal I on X is below an ideal J on Y in the Katetov order if there is a function $f:Y\to X$ such that $f^{-1}[A]\in J$ for every $A\in I$. We show that the Hindman ideal, the Ramsey ideal and the summable ideal are pairwise incomparable in the Katetov order, where * the Ramsey ideal consists of those sets of pairs of natural numbers which do not contain a set of all pairs of any infinite set (equivalently do not contain, in a sense, any infinite complete subgraph), * the Hindman ideal consists of those sets of natural numbers which do not contain any infinite set together with all finite sums of its members (equivalently do not contain IP-sets that are considered in Ergodic Ramsey theory), * the summable ideal consists of those sets of natural numbers such that the series of the reciprocals of its members is convergent. Moreover, we show that in the Katetov order the above mentioned ideals are not below the van der Waerden ideal that consists of those sets of natural numbers which do not contain arithmetic progressions of arbitrary finite length.

The planar Turán number of the seven-cycle
The planar Turán number, $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. The topic of extremal planar graphs was initiated by Dowden (2016). He obtained sharp upper bound for both $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_4)$ and $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_5)$. Later on, D. Ghosh et al. obtained sharp upper bound of $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_6)$ and proposed a conjecture on $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_k)$ for $k\geq 7$. In this paper, we give a sharp upper bound $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_7)\leq {18\over 7}n-{48\over 7}$, which satisfies the conjecture of D. Ghosh et al. It turns out that this upper bound is also sharp for $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_7\})$, the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $K_4$ or $C_7$ as a subgraph.

On a variant of dichromatic number for digraphs with prescribed sets of arcs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider a variant of dichromatic number on digraphs with prescribed sets of arcs. Let $D$ be a digraph and let $Z_1, Z_2$ be two sets of arcs in $D$. For a subdigraph $H$ of $D$, let $A(H)$ denote the set of all arcs of $H$. Let $μ(D, Z_1, Z_2)$ be the minimum number of parts in a vertex partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ such that for every $X\in \mathcal{P}$, the subdigraph of $D$ induced by $X$ contains no directed cycle $C$ with $|A(C)\cap Z_1|\neq |A(C)\cap Z_2|$. For $Z_1=A(D)$ and $Z_2=\emptyset$, $μ(D, Z_1, Z_2)$ is equal to the dichromatic number of $D$. We prove that for every digraph $F$ and every tuple $(a_e,b_e,r_e, q_e)$ of integers with $q_e\ge 2$ and $\gcd(a_e,q_e)=\gcd(b_e,q_e)=1$ for each arc $e$ of $F$, there exists an integer $N$ such that if $μ(D, Z_1, Z_2)\ge N$, then $D$ contains a subdigraph isomorphic to a subdivision of $F$ in which each arc $e$ of $F$ is subdivided into a directed path~$P_e$ such that~$a_e|A(P_e)\cap Z_1|+b_e|A(P_e)\cap Z_2|\equiv {r_e}\pmod {q_e}$. This generalizes a theorem of Steiner [Subdivisions with congruence constraints in digraphs of large chromatic number, arXiv:2208.06358] which corresponds to the case when $(a_e, b_e, Z_1, Z_2)=(1, 1, A(D), \emptyset)$.

Induced subgraph density. III. Cycles and subdivisions
We show that for every two cycles $C,D$, there exists $c>0$ such that if $G$ is both $C$-free and $\overline{D}$-free then $G$ has a clique or stable set of size at least $|G|^c$. ("$H$-free" means with no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$, and $\overline{D}$ denotes the complement graph of $D$.) Since the five-vertex cycle $C_5$ is isomorphic to its complement, this extends the earlier result that $C_5$ satisfies the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture. It also unifies and strengthens several other results. The results for cycles are special cases of results for subdivisions, as follows. Let $H,J$ be obtained from smaller graphs by subdividing every edge exactly twice. We will prove that there exists $c>0$ such that if $G$ is both $H$-free and $\overline{J}$-free then $G$ has a clique or stable set of size at least $|G|^c$. And the same holds if $H$ and/or $J$ is obtained from a graph bychoosing a forest $F$ and subdividing every edge not in $F$ at least five times. Our proof uses the framework of iterative sparsification developed in other papers of this series. Along the way, we will also give a short and simple proof of a celebrated result of Fox and Sudakov, that says that for all $H$, every $H$-free graph contains either a large stable set or a large complete bipartite subgraph.
On the Identity and Group Problems for Complex Heisenberg Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the Identity Problem, the problem of determining if a finitely generated semigroup of matrices contains the identity matrix; see Problem 3 (Chapter 10.3) in ``Unsolved Problems in Mathematical Systems and Control Theory'' by Blondel and Megretski (2004). This fundamental problem is known to be undecidable for $\mathbb{Z}^{4 \times 4}$ and decidable for $\mathbb{Z}^{2 \times 2}$. The Identity Problem has been recently shown to be in polynomial time by Dong for the Heisenberg group over complex numbers in any fixed dimension with the use of Lie algebra and the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. We develop alternative proof techniques for the problem making a step forward towards more general problems such as the Membership Problem. Using our techniques we also show that the problem of determining if a given set of Heisenberg matrices generates a group can be decided in polynomial time.
