Locally connected graphs: metric properties

In this work we show that any connected locally connected graph defines a metric space having at least as many lines as vertices with only three exception: the complete multipartite graphs $K_{1,2,2}$, $K_{2,2,2}$ and $K_{2,2,2,2}$. This proves that this class fulfills a conjecture, proposed by Chen and Chvátal, saying that any metric space on n points has at least n lines or a line containing all the points.
On Pancyclicity in a Mixed Model for Domination Reconfiguration

A new model for domination reconfiguration is introduced which combines the properties of the preexisting token addition/removal (TAR) and token sliding (TS) models. The vertices of the TARS-graph correspond to the dominating sets of $G$, where two vertices are adjacent if and only if they are adjacent via either the TAR reconfiguration rule or the TS reconfiguration rule. While the domination reconfiguration graph obtained by using only the TAR rule (sometimes called the dominating graph) will never have a Hamilton cycle, we show that for some classes of graphs $G$, by adding a relatively small number of token sliding edges, the resulting graph is not only hamiltonian, but is in fact pancyclic. In particular, if the underlying graphs are trees, complete graphs, or complete multipartite graphs, their TARS-graphs will be pancyclic. We also provide pancyclicity results for TARS-graphs of graph unions and joins, and conclude by posing the question: Are all TARS-graphs pancyclic?

A digraph is semicomplete multipartite if its underlying graph is a complete multipartite graph. As a special case of semicomplete multipartite digraphs, Jørgensen et al. \cite{JG14} initiated the study of doubly regular team tournaments. As a natural extension, we introduce doubly regular team semicomplete multipartite digraphs and show that such digraphs fall into three types. Furthermore, we give a characterization of all semicomplete multipartite commutative weakly distance-regular digraphs.

For a list-assignment $L$, the reconfiguration graph $C_L(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph whose vertices are proper $L$-colorings of $G$ and whose edges link two colorings that differ on only one vertex. If $|L(v)| \ge d(v) + 2$ for every vertex of $G$, it is known that $C_L(G)$ is connected. In this case, Cambie et al. investigated the diameter of $C_L(G)$. They conjectured that $diam(C_L(G)) \le n(G) + μ(G)$ with $μ(G)$ the size of a maximum matching of $G$ and proved several results towards this conjecture. We answer to two of their open problems by proving the conjecture for two classes of graphs, namely subcubic graphs and complete multipartite graphs.
Maximizing Satisfied Vertex Requests in List Coloring

Suppose $G$ is a graph and $L$ is a list assignment for $G$. A request of $L$ is a function $r$ with nonempty domain $D\subseteq V(G)$ such that $r(v) \in L(v)$ for each $v \in D$. The triple $(G,L,r)$ is $ε$-satisfiable if there exists a proper $L$-coloring $f$ of $G$ such that $f(v) = r(v)$ for at least $ε|D|$ vertices in $D$. We say $G$ is $(k, ε)$-flexible if $(G,L',r')$ is $ε$-satisfiable whenever $L'$ is a $k$-assignment for $G$ and $r'$ is a request of $L'$. It is known that a graph $G$ is not $(k, ε)$-flexible for any $k$ if and only if $ε> 1/ ρ(G)$ where $ρ(G)$ is the Hall ratio of $G$. The list flexibility number of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_{\ell flex}(G)$, is the smallest $k$ such that $G$ is $(k,1/ ρ(G))$-flexible. A fundamental open question on list flexibility numbers asks: Is there a graph with list flexibility number greater than its coloring number?
In this paper, we show that the list flexibility number of any complete multipartite graph $G$ is at most the coloring number of $G$. We also initiate the study of list epsilon flexibility functions of complete bipartite graphs which was first suggested by Kaul, Mathew, Mudrock, and Pelsmajer in 2024. Specifically, we completely determine the list epsilon flexibility function of $K_{m,n}$ when $m \in \{1,2\}$ and establish some additional bounds for small $m$. Our proofs reveal a connection to list coloring complete bipartite graphs with asymmetric list sizes which is a topic that was explored by Alon, Cambie, and Kang in 2021.

A travel groupoid is an algebraic system satisfying two suitable conditions, which has a relation to graphs. In this article, we characterize travel groupoids on finite complete multipartite graphs, and we give the numbers of travel groupoids on the complete multipartite graphs.
Chip games and multipartite graph paintability
We study the paintability, an on-line version of choosability, of complete multipartite graphs. We do this by considering an equivalent chip game introduced by Duraj, Gutowski, and Kozik. We consider complete multipartite graphs with $ n $ parts of size at most 3. Using a computational approach, we establish upper bounds on the paintability of such graphs for small values of $ n. $
The choosability of complete multipartite graphs is closely related to value $ p(n, m) $, the minimum number of edges in a $n$-uniform hypergraph with no panchromatic $m$-coloring. We consider an online variant of this parameter $ p_{OL}(n, m), $ introduced by Khuzieva et al. using a symmetric chip game. With this symmetric chip game, we find an improved upper bound for $ p_{OL}(n, m)$ when $m \geq 3$ and $n$ is large. Our method also implies a lower bound on the paintability of complete multipartite graphs with $m \geq 3$ parts of equal size.

In a graph, we assign distinct integers to the vertices, and take the sum of two integers if they are on two adjacent vertices. The minimum possible number of different sums is the \emph{sum index} of this graph. In this paper, we present some new developments on graph sum index. First, we explain the connections between graph sum index and results in additive combinatorics. Then, we determine the sum indices of the complete multipartite graphs, hypercubes, and some cluster graphs. Also, we study the maximum number of edges in a graph with a fixed sum index, which is related to the forbidden subgraph problem.

We introduce the \emph{ID-index} of a finite simple connected graph. For a graph $G=(V,\ E)$ with diameter $d$, we let $f:V\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$ assign \emph{ranks} to the vertices, then under $f$, each vertex $v$ gets a \emph{string}, which is a $d$-vector with the $i$-th coordinate being the sum of the ranks of the vertices that are of distance $i$ from $v$. The \emph{ID-index} of $G$, denoted by $IDI(G)$, is defined to be the minimum number $k$ for which there is an $f$ with $|f(V)|=k$, such that each vertex gets a distinct string under $f$. We present some relations between ID-graphs, which were defined by Chartrand, Kono, and Zhang, and their ID-indices; give a lower bound on the ID-index of a graph; and determine the ID-indices of paths, grids, cycles, prisms, complete graphs, some complete multipartite graphs, and some caterpillars.
Multipartite tournaments in which any two vertices have an $(i,j)$-step common out-neighbor
We say that a digraph $D$ is $(i,j)$-step competitive if any two vertices have an $(i,j)$-step common out-neighbor in $D$ and that a graph $G$ is $(i,j)$-step competitively orientable if there exists an $(i,j)$-step competitive orientation of $G$.
In [Choi et al. Competitively orientable complete multipartite graphs. Discrete Mathematics, 345(9):112950, 2022], Choi et al. introduce the notion of competitive digraph and completely characterize competitively orientable complete multipartite graphs in terms of the sizes of its partite sets. Here, a competitive digraph means a $(1,1)$-step competitive digraph. In this paper, the result of Choi et al. has been extended to a general characterization of $(i,j)$-step competitively orientable complete multipartite graphs.
Colouring a graph with position sets
In this paper we consider a colouring version of the general position problem. The \emph{$\gp $-chromatic number} is the smallest number of colours needed to colour the vertices of the graph such that each colour class has the no-three-in-line property. We determine bounds on this colouring number in terms of the diameter, general position number, size, chromatic number, cochromatic number and total domination number and prove realisation results. We also determine the $\gp $-chromatic number of several graph classes, including Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$, line graphs of complete graphs, complete multipartite graphs, block graphs and Cartesian products. Finally, we show that the $\gp $-colouring problem is NP-complete.

We introduce the bodyguard problem for graphs. This is a variation of Surrounding Cops and Robber but, in this model, a smallest possible group of bodyguards must surround the president and then maintain this protection indefinitely. We investigate some elementary bounds, then solve this problem for the infinite graph families of complete graphs, wheels, trees, cycles, complete multipartite graphs, and two-dimensional grids. We also examine the problem in more general Cartesian, strong, and lexicographic products.

Given two graphs H and G, the size multipartite Ramsey number mj (H, G) is the smallest natural number t such that an arbitrary coloring of the edges of Kjt, complete multipartite graph whose vertex set is partitioned into j parts each of size t, using two colors red and blue, necessarily forces a red copy of H or a blue copy of G as a subgraph. The notion of size multipartite Ramsey number has been introduced by Burger and Vuuren in 2004. It is worth noting that, this concept is derived by using the idea of the original classical Ramsey number, multipartite Ramsey number and the size Ramsey number. In this paper, we focus on mj(H, G) and find a lower bound for mj (H, G) based on the chromatic number of H and the order of G. Also, for graphs G with large maximum degree, we obtain a tight lower bound for mj(Km, G). Furthermore, we determine the order of magnitude of mj(Km, K1,n), for j >= m >= 3 and n >= 2. Then we specify the exact values of mj(Km, K1,n) for the cases m = j, m = 3 and j = 0 or m-2 (mod m-2).

For graphs $F$ and $H$, let $f_{F,H}(n)$ be the minimum possible size of a maximum $F$-free induced subgraph in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph. This notion generalizes the Ramsey function and the Erdős--Rogers function. Establishing a container lemma for the $F$-free subgraphs, we give a general upper bound on $f_{F,H}(n)$, assuming the existence of certain locally dense $H$-free graphs. In particular, we prove that for every graph $F$ with $\mathrm{ex}(m,F) = O(m^{1+α})$, where $α\in [0,1/2)$, we have
\[
f_{F, K_3}(n) = O\left(n^{\frac{1}{2-α}}\left(\log n\right)^{\frac{3}{2-
α}}\right)
\quad
\textrm{and}
\quad
f_{F, K_4}(n) = O\left(n^{\frac{1}{3-2α}}\left(\log n\right)^{\frac{6}{3-2α}}\right).
\] For the cases where $F$ is a complete multipartite graph, letting $s = \sum_{i=1}^r s_i$, we prove that
\[
f_{K_{s_1,\ldots,s_r}, K_{r+2}}(n) = O \left( n^{\frac{2s -3}{4s -5}} (\log n)^{3} \right).
\]
We also make an observation which improves the bounds of $\mathrm{ex}(G(n,p),C_4)$ by a polylogarithmic factor.
Threshold numbers of some graphs
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is called a \emph{$k$-threshold graph} with \emph{thresholds} $θ_1<θ_2<...<θ_k$ if we can assign a real number $r(v)$ to each vertex $v\in V$, such that for any $u,v\in V$, we have $uv\in E$ if and only if $r(u)+r(v)\ge θ_i$ holds true for an odd number of elements in $\{θ_1,θ_2,...,θ_k\}$. The smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ is a $k$-threshold graph is called the \emph{threshold number} of $G$. For the complete multipartite graphs and the cluster graphs, Kittipassorn and Sumalroj determined the exact threshold numbers of $K_{n\times 3}$ and $nK_3$. In this paper, first we determine the threshold numbers of some path-related graphs, including linear forests, ladders, and tents. Then, on the basis of Kittipassorn and Sumalroj's results, we determine the exact threshold numbers of $K_{n_1\times 1, n_2\times 2, n_3\times 3}$ and $n_1 K_1\cup n_2 K_2\cup n_3 K_3$, which solve a problem proposed by Sumalroj.
Hilbert series for contractads and modular compactifications
Contractads are operadic-type algebraic structures well-suited for describing configuration spaces indexed by a simple connected graph $Γ$. Specifically, these configuration spaces are defined as $\mathrm{Conf}_Γ(X):=X^{|V(Γ)|}\setminus \cup_{(ij)\in E(Γ)} \{x_i=x_j\}$. In this paper, we explore functional equations for the Hilbert series of Koszul dual contractads and provide explicit Hilbert series for fundamental contractads such as the commutative, Lie, associative and the little discs contractads.
Additionally, we focus on a particular contractad derived from the wonderful compactifications of $\mathrm{Conf}_Γ(\mathbb{k})$, for $\mathbb{k}=\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C}$. First, we demonstrate that for complete multipartite graphs, the associated wonderful compactifications coincide with the modular compactifications introduced by Smyth. Second, we establish that the homology of the complex points and the homology of the real locus of the wonderful contractad are both quadratic and Koszul contractads. We offer a detailed description of generators and relations, extending the concepts of the Hypercommutative operad and cacti operads, respectively. Furthermore, using the functional equations for the Hilbert series, we describe the corresponding Hilbert series for the homology of modular compactifications.
Weak saturation rank: a failure of linear algebraic approach to weak saturation

Given a graph $F$ and a positive integer $n$, the weak $F$-saturation number $\mathrm{wsat}(K_n,F)$ is the minimum number of edges in a graph $H$ on $n$ vertices such that the edges missing in $H$ can be added, one at a time, so that every edge creates a copy of $F$. Kalai in 1985 introduced a linear algebraic approach that became one of the most efficient tools to prove lower bounds on weak saturation numbers. If $W$ is a vector space spanned by vectors $w(e)$ assigned to edges $e$ of $K_n$ in such a way that, for every copy $F'\subset K_n$ of $F$, there exist non-zero $λ_e$, $e\in E(F')$, satisfying $\sum_{e\in E(F')}λ_e w(e)=0$, then $\mathrm{dim}W\leq \mathrm{wsat}(K_n,F)$. In this paper, we prove limitations of this approach: we show infinitely many $F$ such that, for every vector space $W$ as above, $\mathrm{dim}W<\mathrm{wsat}(K_n,F)$. We also suggest a modification of this approach that allows to get tight lower bounds even when the original linear algebraic approach is not sufficient. Finally, we generalise our results to random graphs, complete multipartite graphs, and hypergraphs.
Turán number of complete multipartite graphs in multipartite graphs
In this paper we study a multi-partite version of the Erdős--Stone theorem. Given integers $r<k$ and $t\ge 1$, let $\text{ex}_k(n, K_{r+1}(t))$ be the maximum number of edges of $K_{r+1}(t)$-free $k$-partite graphs with $n$ vertices in each part, where $K_{r+1}(t)$ is the complete $(r+1)$-partite graph with $t$ vertices in each part. We determine the exact value of $\text{ex}_k(n, K_{r+1}(t))$ for $t\le 3$, $r<k\le 2r$ and sufficiently large $n$. We also characterize all extremal graphs for $r, k$ such that $r$ divides $k$, analogous to a result of Erd\H os and Simonovits on forbidding $K_{r+1}(t)$ in general graphs.

Let $G_S$ be the graph obtained by attaching a self-loop at every vertex in $S \subseteq V(G)$ of a simple graph $G$ of order $n.$ In this paper, we explore several new results related to the line graph $L(G_S)$ of $G_S.$ Particularly, we show that every eigenvalue of $L(G_S)$ must be at least $-2,$ and relate the characteristic polynomial of the line graph $L(G)$ of $G$ with the characteristic polynomial of the line graph $L(\widehat{G})$ of a self-loop graph $\widehat{G}$, which is obtained by attaching a self-loop at each vertex of $G$. Then, we provide some new bounds for the eigenvalues and energy of $G_S.$ As one of the consequences, we obtain that the energy of a connected regular complete multipartite graph is not greater than the energy of the corresponding self-loop graph. Lastly, we establish a lower bound of the spectral radius in terms of the first Zagreb index $M_1(G)$ and the minimum degree $δ(G),$ as well as proving two Nordhaus-Gaddum-type bounds for the spectral radius and the energy of $G_S,$ respectively.
On a Conjecture Concerning the Roots of Ehrhart Polynomials of Symmetric Edge Polytopes from Complete Multipartite Graphs
In [7], Higashitani, Kummer, and Michałek pose a conjecture about the symmetric edge polytopes of complete multipartite graphs and confirm it for a number of families in the bipartite case. We confirm that conjecture for a number of new classes following the authors' methods and we present a more general result which suggests that the methods in their current form might not be enough to prove the conjecture in full generality.
