A stronger result on fractional strong colourings
Aharoni, Berger and Ziv recently proved the fractional relaxation of the strong colouring conjecture. In this note we generalize their result as follows. Let $k\geq 1$ and partition the vertices of a graph $G$ into sets $V_1,..., V_r$, such that for $1\leq i \leq r$ every vertex in $V_i$ has at most $\max\{k, |V_i|-k \}$ neighbours outside $V_i$. Then there is a probability distribution on the stable sets of $G$ such that a stable set drawn from this distribution hits each vertex in $V_i$ with probability $1/|V_i|$, for $1\leq i\leq r$. We believe that this result will be useful as a tool in probabilistic approaches to bounding the chromatic number and fractional chromatic number.

Connectedness of Strong k-Colour Graphs
For a positive integer k and a graph G, we consider proper vertex-colourings of G with k colours in which all k colours are actually used. We call such a colouring a strong k-colouring. The strong k-colour graph of G, S_k(G), is the graph that has all the strong k-colourings of G as its vertex set, and two colourings are adjacent in S_k(G) if they differ in colour on only one vertex of G. In this paper, we show some results related to the question : For what G and k is S_k(G) connected ?

On minimal colorings without monochromatic solutions to a linear equation
Published in Integers, the Electronic Journal of Combinatorial Number Theory 7 (2007), no. 2, 20 pp. Also in a collection: Combinatorial Number Theory, de Gruyter, Berlin, 2007, pp. 1-22 • View Publication • BIB
For a ring R and system L of linear homogeneous equations, we call a coloring of the nonzero elements of R minimal for L if there are no monochromatic solutions to L and the coloring uses as few colors as possible. For a rational number q and positive integer n, let E(q,n) denote the equation $\sum_{i=0}^{n-2} q^{i}x_i = q^{n-1}x_{n-1}$. We classify the minimal colorings of the nonzero rational numbers for each of the equations E(q,3) with q in {3/2,2,3,4}, for E(2,n) with n in {3,4,5,6}, and for x_1+x_2+x_3=4x_4. These results lead to several open problems and conjectures on minimal colorings.

Three-Colorings of Cubic Graphs and Tensor Operators
Penrose's work \cite{8} established a connection between the edge 3-colorings of cubic planar graphs and tensor algebras. We exploit this point of view in order to get algebraic representations of the category of cubic graphs with free ends.

The adjacent vertex distinguishing total chromatic number
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-studied concept is that of the total chromatic number. A proper total colouring of a graph is a colouring of both vertices and edges so that every pair of adjacent vertices receive different colours, every pair of adjacent edges receive different colours and every vertex and incident edge receive different colours. This paper considers a strengthening of this condition and examines the minimum number of colours required for a total colouring with the additional property that for any adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$, the sets of colours incident to $u$ is different from the set of colours incident to $v$. It is shown that there is a constant $C$ so that for any graph $G$, there exists such a colouring using at most $Δ(G) + C$ colours.

Structural properties of 1-planar graphs and an application to acyclic edge coloring
Published in Scientia Sinica Mathematica, 2010, 40, 1025--1032 • View Publication • BIB
A graph is called 1-planar if it can be drawn on the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we establish a local property of 1-planar graphs which describes the structure in the neighborhood of small vertices (i.e. vertices of degree no more than seven). Meanwhile, some new classes of light graphs in 1-planar graphs with the bounded degree are found. Therefore, two open problems presented by Fabrici and Madaras [The structure of 1-planar graphs, Discrete Mathematics, 307, (2007), 854-865] are solved. Furthermore, we prove that each 1-planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)$ is acyclically edge $L$-choosable where $L=\max\{2Δ(G)-2,Δ(G)+83\}$.

A Note on the Hodge Structure of the Intersection of Coloring Complexes
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices. The coloring complex $Δ(G)$ was defined by Steingrímsson, and the homology of $Δ(G)$ was shown to be nonzero only in dimension $n-3$ by Jonsson. Hanlon recently showed that the Eulerian idempotents provide a decomposition of the homology group $H_{n-3}(Δ(G))$ where the dimension of the $j^{th}$ component in the decomposition, $H_{n-3}^{(j)}(Δ(G))$, equals the absolute value of the coefficient of $λ^{j}$ in the chromatic polynomial of $G$, $χ_{G}(λ)$. Jonsson recently studied the topology of intersections of coloring complexes. In this note, we show that the coefficient of the ${j}^{th}$ term in the chromatic polynomial of the intersection of coloring complexes gives the Euler Characteristic of the $j^{th}$ Hodge subcomplex of the Hodge decomposition of the intersection of coloring complexes.

Milnor numbers of projective hypersurfaces and the chromatic polynomial of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic polynomial of a graph G counts the number of proper colorings of G. We give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Read and Rota-Heron-Welsh that the absolute values of the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial form a log-concave sequence. We define a sequence of numerical invariants of projective hypersurfaces analogous to the Milnor number of local analytic hypersurfaces. Then we give a characterization of correspondences between projective spaces up to a positive integer multiple which includes the conjecture on the chromatic polynomial as a special case. As a byproduct of our approach, we obtain an analogue of Kouchnirenko's theorem relating the Milnor number with the Newton polytope.

Graph Coloring and Function Simulation
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every partial function with finite domain and range can be effectively simulated through sequential colorings of graphs. Namely, we show that given a finite set $S=\{0,1,\ldots,m-1\}$ and a number $n \geq \max\{m,3\}$, any partial function $\varphi:S^{^p} \to S^{^q}$ (i.e. it may not be defined on some elements of its domain $S^{^p}$) can be effectively (i.e. in polynomial time) transformed to a simple graph $\matr{G}_{_{\varphi,n}}$ along with three sets of specified vertices $$X = \{x_{_{0}},x_{_{1}},\ldots,x_{_{p-1}}\}, \ \ Y = \{y_{_{0}},y_{_{1}},\ldots,y_{_{q-1}}\}, \ \ R = \{\Kv{0},\Kv{1},\ldots,\Kv{n-1}\},$$ such that any assignment $σ_{_{0}}: X \cup R \to \{0,1,\ldots,n-1\} $ with $σ_{_{0}}(\Kv{i})=i$ for all $0 \leq i < n$, is {\it uniquely} and {\it effectively} extendable to a proper $n$-coloring $σ$ of $\matr{G}_{_{\varphi,n}}$ for which we have $$\varphi(σ(x_{_{0}}),σ(x_{_{1}}),\ldots,σ(x_{_{p-1}}))=(σ(y_{_{0}}),σ(y_{_{1}}),\ldots,σ(y_{_{q-1}})),$$ unless $(σ(x_{_{0}}),σ(x_{_{1}}),\ldots,σ(x_{_{p-1}}))$ is not in the domain of $\varphi$ (in which case $σ_{_{0}}$ has no extension to a proper $n$-coloring of $\matr{G}_{_{\varphi,n}}$).

Small covers and the equivariant bordism classification of 2-torus manifolds
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Vol. 2014, No. 24, pp. 6756--6797 • View Publication • BIB
Associated with the Davis-Januszkiewicz theory of small covers, this paper deals with the theory of 2-torus manifolds from the viewpoint of equivariant bordism. We define a differential operator on the "dual" algebra of the unoriented $G_n$-representation algebra introduced by Conner and Floyd, where $G_n=(\Z_2)^n$. With the help of $G_n$-colored graphs (or mod 2 GKM graphs), we may use this differential operator to give a very simple description of tom Dieck-Kosniowski-Stong localization theorem in the setting of 2-torus manifolds. We then apply this to study the $G_n$-equivariant unoriented bordism classification of $n$-dimensional 2-torus manifolds. We show that the $G_n$-equivariant unoriented bordism class of each $n$-dimensional 2-torus manifold contains an $n$-dimensional small cover as its representative, solving the conjecture posed in [19]. In addition, we also obtain that the graded noncommutative ring formed by the equivariant unoriented bordism classes of 2-torus manifolds of all possible dimensions is generated by the classes of all generalized real Bott manifolds (as special small covers over the products of simplices). This gives a strong connection between the computation of $G_n$-equivariant bordism groups or ring and the Davis-Januszkiewicz theory of small covers. As a computational application, with the help of computer, we completely determine the structure of the group formed by equivariant bordism classes of all 4-dimensional 2-torus manifolds. Finally, we give some essential relationships among 2-torus manifolds, coloring polynomials, colored simple convex polytopes, colored graphs.
Properly coloured copies and rainbow copies of large graphs with small maximum degree
Let G be a graph on n vertices with maximum degree D. We use the Lovász local lemma to show the following two results about colourings c of the edges of the complete graph K_n. If for each vertex v of K_n the colouring c assigns each colour to at most (n-2)/22.4D^2 edges emanating from v, then there is a copy of G in K_n which is properly edge-coloured by c. This improves on a result of Alon, Jiang, Miller, and Pritikin [Random Struct. Algorithms 23(4), 409-433, 2003]. On the other hand, if c assigns each colour to at most n/51D^2 edges of K_n, then there is a copy of G in K_n such that each edge of G receives a different colour from c. This proves a conjecture of Frieze and Krivelevich [Electron. J. Comb. 15(1), R59, 2008]. Our proofs rely on a framework developed by Lu and Székely [Electron. J. Comb. 14(1), R63, 2007] for applying the local lemma to random injections. In order to improve the constants in our results we use a version of the local lemma due to Bissacot, Fernández, Procacci, and Scoppola [preprint, arXiv:0910.1824].

On the Lucky labeling of Graphs
Suppose the vertices of a graph $G$ were labeled arbitrarily by positive integers, and let $Sum(v)$ denote the sum of labels over all neighbors of vertex $v$. A labeling is lucky if the function $Sum$ is a proper coloring of $G$, that is, if we have $Sum(u) \neq Sum(v)$ whenever $u$ and $v$ are adjacent. The least integer $k$ for which a graph $G$ has a lucky labeling from the set $\lbrace 1, 2, ...,k\rbrace$ is the lucky number of $G$, denoted by $η(G)$. We will prove, for every graph $G$ other than $ K_{2} $, $\frac{w}{n-w+1}\leqη(G) \leq Δ^{2} $ and we present an algorithm for lucky labeling of $ G $.

Vertex-Coloring 2-Edge-Weighting of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-{\it edge-weighting} $w$ of a graph $G$ is an assignment of an integer weight, $w(e)\in \{1,\dots, k\}$, to each edge $e$. An edge weighting naturally induces a vertex coloring $c$ by defining $c(u)=\sum_{u\sim e} w(e)$ for every $u \in V(G)$. A $k$-edge-weighting of a graph $G$ is \emph{vertex-coloring} if the induced coloring $c$ is proper, i.e., $c(u) \neq c(v)$ for any edge $uv \in E(G)$. Given a graph $G$ and a vertex coloring $c_0$, does there exist an edge-weighting such that the induced vertex coloring is $c_0$? We investigate this problem by considering edge-weightings defined on an abelian group. It was proved that every 3-colorable graph admits a vertex-coloring $3$-edge-weighting \cite{KLT}. Does every 2-colorable graph (i.e., bipartite graphs) admit a vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting? We obtain several simple sufficient conditions for graphs to be vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting. In particular, we show that 3-connected bipartite graphs admit vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting.

Coloring dense graphs via VC-dimension
The Vapnik-Červonenkis dimension is a complexity measure of set-systems, or hypergraphs. Its application to graphs is usually done by considering the sets of neighborhoods of the vertices (cf. Alon et al. (2006) and Chepoi, Estellon, and Vaxes (2007)), hence providing a set-system. But the graph structure is lost in the process. The aim of this paper is to introduce the notion of paired VC-dimension, a generalization of VC-dimension to set-systems endowed with a graph structure, hence a collection of pairs of subsets. The classical VC-theory is generally used in combinatorics to bound the transversality of a hypergraph in terms of its fractional transversality and its VC-dimension. Similarly, we bound the chromatic number in terms of fractional transversality and paired VC-dimension. This approach turns out to be very useful for a class of problems raised by Erdős and Simonovits (1973) asking for H-free graphs with minimum degree at least cn and arbitrarily high chromatic number, where H is a fixed graph and c a positive constant. We show how the usual VC-dimension gives a short proof of the fact that triangle-free graphs with minimum degree at least n/3 have bounded chromatic number, where $n$ is the number of vertices. Using paired VC-dimension, we prove that if the chromatic number of $H$-free graphs with minimum degree at least cn is unbounded for some positive c, then it is unbounded for all c<1/3. In other words, one can find H-free graphs with unbounded chromatic number and minimum degree arbitrarily close to n/3. These H-free graphs are derived from a construction of Hajnal. The large chromatic number follows from the Borsuk-Ulam Theorem.
Sub-exponentially many 3-colorings of triangle-free planar graphs

Thomassen conjectured that every triangle-free planar graph on n vertices has exponentially many 3-colorings, and proved that it has at least 2^[n^(1/12)/20000] distinct 3-colorings. We show that it has at least 2^sqrt(n/362) distinct 3-colorings.
Vertex colorings of simplicial complexes
We define an (r,s)-coloring of an abstract simplicial complex to be a coloring using r colors of the vertices so that in any simplex at most s vertices have the same color. We translate the problem of finding an (r,s)-coloring of a given simplex to a topological problem and to a ring theoretic problem. The topological version involves vector bundles over Davis--Januszkiewicz spaces and the algebraic one involves factorizations in Stanley-Reisner rings.

Injective colorings of sparse graphs

Let $mad(G)$ denote the maximum average degree (over all subgraphs) of $G$ and let $χ_i(G)$ denote the injective chromatic number of $G$. We prove that if $mad(G) \leq 5/2$, then $χ_i(G)\leqΔ(G) + 1$; and if $mad(G) < 42/19$, then $χ_i(G)=Δ(G)$. Suppose that $G$ is a planar graph with girth $g(G)$ and $Δ(G)\geq 4$. We prove that if $g(G)\geq 9$, then $χ_i(G)\leqΔ(G)+1$; similarly, if $g(G)\geq 13$, then $χ_i(G)=Δ(G)$.
List precoloring extension in planar graphs
Published in Discrete Math 311 (2011), no. 12, 1046-1056 • View Publication • BIB
A celebrated result of Thomassen states that not only can every planar graph be colored properly with five colors, but no matter how arbitrary palettes of five colors are assigned to vertices, one can choose a color from the corresponding palette for each vertex so that the resulting coloring is proper. This result is referred to as 5-choosability of planar graphs. Albertson asked whether Thomassen's theorem can be extended by precoloring some vertices which are at a large enough distance apart in a graph. Here, among others, we answer the question in the case when the graph does not contain short cycles separating precolored vertices and when there is a "wide" Steiner tree containing all the precolored vertices.
