Bipartite $S_2$ graphs are Cohen-Macaulay
In this paper we show that if the Stanley-Reisner ring of the simplicial complex of independent sets of a bipartite graph $G$ satisfies Serre's condition $S_2$, then $G$ is Cohen-Macaulay. As a consequence, the characterization of Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs due to Herzog and Hibi carries over this family of bipartite graphs. We check that the equivalence of Cohen-Macaulay property and the condition $S_2$ is also true for chordal graphs and we classify cyclic graphs with respect to the condition $S_2$.

Face rings of simplicial complexes with singularities
Published • View Publication • BIB
The face ring of a simplicial complex modulo m generic linear forms is shown to have finite local cohomology if and only if the link of every face of dimension m or more is `nonsingular', i.e., has the homology of a wedge of spheres of the expected dimension. This is derived from an enumerative result for local cohomology of face rings modulo generic linear forms, as compared with local cohomology of the face ring itself. The enumerative result is generalized in slightly weaker form to squarefree modules. A concept of `Cohen-Macaulay in codimension c' is defined and characterized for arbitrary finitely generated modules and coherent sheaves. For the face ring of an r-dimensional complex Delta, it is equivalent to nonsingularity of Delta in dimension r-c; for a coherent sheaf on projective space, this condition is shown to be equivalent to the same condition on any single generic hyperplane section. The characterization of nonsingularity in dimension m via finite local cohomology thus generalizes from face rings to arbitrary graded modules.

Erdos-Ko-Rado theorems for simplicial complexes
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011), no. 4, 1218-1227 • View Publication • BIB
A recent framework for generalizing the Erdos-Ko-Rado Theorem, due to Holroyd, Spencer, and Talbot, defines the Erdos-Ko-Rado property for a graph in terms of the graph's independent sets. Since the family of all independent sets of a graph forms a simplicial complex, it is natural to further generalize the Erdos-Ko-Rado property to an arbitrary simplicial complex. An advantage of working in simplicial complexes is the availability of algebraic shifting, a powerful shifting (compression) technique, which we use to verify a conjecture of Holroyd and Talbot in the case of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay near-cones.
A generalization of $k$-Cohen-Macaulay complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a positive integer $k$ and a non-negative integer $t$ a class of simplicial complexes, to be denoted by $k$-${\rm CM}_t$, is introduced. This class generalizes two notions for simplicial complexes: being $k$-Cohen-Macaulay and $k$-Buchsbaum. In analogy with the Cohen-Macaulay and Buchsbaum complexes, we give some characterizations of ${\rm CM}_t(=$1-${\rm CM}_t)$ complexes, in terms of vanishing of some homologies of its links and, in terms of vanishing of some relative singular homologies of the geometric realization of the complex and its punctured space. We show that a complex is $k$-${\rm CM}_t$ if and only if the links of its nonempty faces are $k$-${\rm CM}_{t-1}$. We prove that for an integer $s\le d$, the $(d-s-1)$-skeleton of a $(d-1)$-dimensional $k$-${\rm CM}_t$ complex is $(k+s)$-${\rm CM}_t$. This result generalizes Hibi's result for Cohen-Macaulay complexes and Miyazaki's result for Buchsbaum complexes.

Chordal and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay clutters
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 18(1) (2011), Paper 208 • View Publication • BIB
We extend the definition of chordal from graphs to clutters. The resulting family generalizes both chordal graphs and matroids, and obeys many of the same algebraic and geometric properties. Specifically, the independence complex of a chordal clutter is shellable, hence sequentially Cohen-Macaulay; and the circuit ideal of a certain complement to such a clutter has a linear resolution. Minimal non-chordal clutters are also closely related to obstructions to shellability, and we give some general families of such obstructions, together with a classification by computation of all obstructions to shellability on 6 vertices.

We consider a class of graphs $G$ such that the height of the edge ideal $I(G)$ is half of the number $\sharp V(G)$ of the vertices. We give Cohen-Macaulay criteria for such graphs.

Buchsbaum* complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A class of simplicial complexes, which we call Buchsbaum* over a field, is introduced. Buchsbaum* complexes generalize triangulations of orientable homology manifolds as well as doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes. By definition, the Buchsbaum* property depends only on the geometric realization and the field. Characterizations in terms of simplicial and local cohomology are given. It is proved that Buchsbaum* complexes are doubly Buchsbaum. Enumerative and graph theoretic properties of Buchsbaum* complexes are investigated. It is shown that various constructions, among them one which generalizes convex ear decompositions, yield Buchsbaum* simplicial complexes.

Face numbers of generalized balanced Cohen-Macaulay complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A common generalization of two theorems on the face numbers of Cohen-Macaulay (CM, for short) simplicial complexes is established: the first is the theorem of Stanley (necessity) and Bjorner-Frankl-Stanley (sufficiency) that characterizes all possible face numbers of a-balanced CM complexes, while the second is the theorem of Novik (necessity) and Browder (sufficiency) that characterizes the face numbers of CM subcomplexes of the join of the boundaries of simplices.

Sequentially Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs: vertex decomposability and regularity
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a bipartite graph with edge ideal I(G) whose quotient ring R/I(G) is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We prove: (1) the independence complex of G must be vertex decomposable, and (2) the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of R/I(G) can be determined from the invariants of G.

Koszul incidence algebras, affine semigroups, and Stanley-Reisner ideals
Published in Advances in Mathematics 224 (2010), 2312-2345 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a theorem unifying three results from combinatorial homological and commutative algebra, characterizing the Koszul property for incidence algebras of posets and affine semigroup rings, and characterizing linear resolutions of squarefree monomial ideals. The characterization in the graded setting is via the Cohen-Macaulay property of certain posets or simplicial complexes, and in the more general nongraded setting, via the sequential Cohen-Macaulay property.

Positroid varieties I: juggling and geometry
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the {\em cyclic shifts} of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, and Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subset of the affine Weyl group we call {\em bounded juggling patterns}. We adopt his terminology and call the strata {\em positroid varieties.} We show that positroid varieties are normal and Cohen-Macaulay, and are defined as schemes by the vanishing of Plucker coordinates. We compute their T-equivariant Hilbert series, and show that their associated cohomology classes are represented by affine Stanley functions. This latter fact lets us connect Postnikov's and Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis' approaches to quantum Schubert calculus. Our principal tools are the Frobenius splitting results for Richardson varieties as developed by Brion, Lakshmibai, and Littelmann, and the Hodge-Grobner degeneration of the Grassmannian. We show that each positroid variety degenerates to the projective Stanley-Reisner scheme of a shellable ball.
The complement of a connected bipartite graph is vertex decomposable
Associated to a simple undirected graph $G$ is a simplicial complex $Δ_G$ whose faces correspond to the independent sets of $G$. A graph $G$ is called vertex decomposable if $Δ_G$ is a vertex decomposable simplicial complex. We are interested in determining what families of graph have the property that the complement of $G$, denoted by $\overline{G}$, is vertex decomposable. We obtain the result that the complement of a connected bipartite graph is vertex decomposable and so it is Cohen-Macaulay due to pureness of $Δ_{\overline{G}}$.

Algebraic properties of the path ideal of a tree
Published • View Publication • BIB
The path ideal (of length t >=2) of a graph G is the monomial ideal, denoted I_t(G), whose generators correspond to the directed paths of length t in G. We study some of the algebraic properties of I_t(G) when G is a tree. We first show that I_t(G) is the facet ideal of a simplicial tree. As a consequence, the quotient ring R/I_t(G) is always sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, and the Betti numbers of R/I_t(G) do not depend upon the characteristic of the field. We study the case of the line graph in greater detail at the end of the paper.
Dimension, depth and zero-divisors of the algebra of basic $k$-covers of a graph
Published in Le Matematiche 63 (2008), 117-156 • Search Publication
We study the basic $k$-covers of a bipartite graph $G$; the algebra $\AG$ they span, first studied by Herzog, is the fiber cone of the Alexander dual of the edge ideal. We characterize when $\AG$ is a domain in terms of the combinatorics of $G$; if follows from a result of Hochster that when $\AG$ is a domain, it is also Cohen-Macaulay. We then study the dimension of $\AG$ by introducing a geometric invariant of bipartite graphs, the "graphical dimension". We show that the graphical dimension of $G$ is not larger than $\dim(\AG)$, and equality holds in many cases (e.g. when $G$ is a tree, or a cycle). Finally, we discuss applications of this theory to the arithmetical rank.

Shellable Complexes from Multicomplexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose a group $G$ acts properly on a simplicial complex $Γ$. Let $l$ be the number of $G$-invariant vertices and $p_1, p_2, ... p_m$ be the sizes of the $G$-orbits having size greater than 1. Then $Γ$ must be a subcomplex of $Λ= Δ^{l-1}* \partial Δ^{p_1-1}*... * \partial Δ^{p_m-1}$. A result of Novik gives necessary conditions on the face numbers of Cohen-Macaulay subcomplexes of $Λ$. We show that these conditions are also sufficient, and thus provide a complete characterization of the face numbers of these complexes.

Algebraic properties of edge ideals via combinatorial topology
Published • View Publication • BIB
We apply some basic notions from combinatorial topology to establish various algebraic properties of edge ideals of graphs and more general Stanley-Reisner rings. In this way we provide new short proofs of some theorems from the literature regarding linearity, Betti numbers, and (sequentially) Cohen-Macaulay properties of edges ideals associated to chordal, complements of chordal, and Ferrers graphs, as well as trees and forests. Our approach unifies (and in many cases strengthens) these results and also provides combinatorial/enumerative interpretations of certain algebraic properties. We apply our setup to obtain new results regarding algebraic properties of edge ideals in the context of local changes to a graph (adding whiskers and ears) as well as bounded vertex degree. These methods also lead to recursive relations among certain generating functions of Betti numbers which we use to establish new formulas for the projective dimension of edge ideals. We use only well-known tools from combinatorial topology along the lines of independence complexes of graphs, (not necessarily pure) vertex decomposability, shellability, etc.

Vertex decomposable graphs and obstructions to shellability
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 137 (2009), no. 10, 3235-3246 • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by several recent papers on the edge ideal of a graph G, we study the equivalent notion of the independence complex of G. Using the tool of vertex decomposability from geometric combinatorics, we show that 5-chordal graphs with no chordless 4-cycles are shellable and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We use this result to characterize the obstructions to shellability in flag complexes, extending work of Billera, Myers, and Wachs. We also show how vertex decomposability may be used to show that certain graph constructions preserve shellability.

Topological Cohen-Macaulay criteria for monomial ideals

Scattered over the past few years have been several occurrences of simplicial complexes whose topological behavior characterize the Cohen-Macaulay property for quotients of polynomial rings by arbitrary (not necessarily squarefree) monomial ideals. The purpose of this survey is to gather the developments into one location, with self-contained proofs, including direct combinatorial topological connections between them.

Shellability and the strong gcd-condition
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 16 (2009), no. 2, Special volume in honor of Anders Bjorner, Research Paper 1, 7 pp • View Publication • BIB
Shellability is a well-known combinatorial criterion for verifying that a simplicial complex is Cohen-Macaulay. Another notion familiar to commutative algebraists, but which has not received as much attention from combinatorialists as the Cohen-Macaulay property, is the notion of a Golod ring. Recently, a criterion on simplicial complexes reminiscent of shellability, called the strong gcd-condition, was shown to imply Golodness of the associated Stanley-Reisner ring. The two algebraic notions were tied together by Herzog, Reiner and Welker who showed that if the Alexander dual of a complex is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay then the complex itself is Golod. In this paper, we present a combinatorial companion of this result, namely that if the Alexander dual of a complex is (non-pure) shellable then the complex itself satisfies the strong gcd-condition. Moreover, we show that all implications just mentioned are strict in general but that they are equivalences for flag complexes.
