On an upper bound for central binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers
Recently, Agievich proposed an interesting upper bound on binomial coefficients in the de Moivre-Laplace form. In this article, we show that the latter bound, in the specific case of a central binomial coefficient, is larger than the one proposed by Sasvari and obtained using the Binet formula for the Gamma function. In addition, we provide the expression of the next-order bound and apply it to Catalan numbers $C_n$. The bounds are very close to the exact value, the difference decreasing with $n$ and with the order of the upper bound.

Series Associated with Harmonic Numbers, Fibonacci Numbers and Central Binomial Coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$
We find various series that involves the central binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$, harmonic numbers and Fibonacci Numbers.\\ Contrary to the traditional hypergeometric function $_pF_q$ approach, our method utilizes a straightforward transformation to obtain new evaluations linked to Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio. Before the end of this paper, we also gave a new series representation for $ζ(2)$.

On the Gotzmann threshold of monomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $R_n=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the $n$-variable polynomial ring over a field $K$. Let $S_n$ denote the set of monomials in $R_n$. A monomial $u \in S_n$ is a \textit{Gotzmann monomial} if the Borel-stable monomial ideal $\langle u \rangle$ it generates in $R_n$ is a Gotzmann ideal. A longstanding open problem is to determine all Gotzmann monomials in $R_n$. Given $u_0 \in S_{n-1}$, its \textit{Gotzmann threshold} is the unique nonnegative integer $t_0=τ_n(u_0)$ such that $u_0x_n^t$ is a Gotzmann monomial in $R_n$ if and only if $t \ge t_0$. Currently, the function $τ_n$ is exactly known for $n \le 4$ only. We present here an efficient procedure to determine $τ_n(u_0)$ for all $n$ and all $u_0 \in S_{n-1}$. As an application, in the critical case $u_0=x_2^d$, we determine $τ_5(x_2^d)$ for all $d$ and we conjecture that for $n \ge 6$, $τ_n(x_2^d)$ is a polynomial in $d$ of degree $2^{n-2}$ and dominant term equal to that of the $(n-2)$-iterated binomial coefficient $$ \binom {\binom {\binom d2}2}{\stackrel{\cdots}2}. $$

Generalized polynomials and hyperplane functions in $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$
For $p$ prime, let $\mathcal{H}^n$ be the linear span of characteristic functions of hyperplanes in $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$. We establish new upper bounds on the dimension of $\mathcal{H}^n$ over $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, or equivalently, on the rank of point-hyperplane incidence matrices in $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$ over $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. Our proof is based on a variant of the polynomial method using binomial coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z}$ as generalized polynomials. We also establish additional necessary conditions for a function on $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$ to be an element of $\mathcal{H}^n$.

Interpolation Polynomials, Binomial Coefficients, and Symmetric Function Inequalities
Interpolation polynomials were introduced by Knop--Sahi in type $A$, and Okounkov in type $BC$. They are inhomogeneous polynomials whose top terms are Jack and Macdonald polynomials. Thus the expansion coefficients for the product of two interpolation polynomials, known as Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, generalize the corresponding coefficients for Jack/Macdonald polynomials. Special values of interpolation polynomials, known as binomial coefficients, arise in the binomial type expansions of Jack/Macdonald polynomials and Koornwinder polynomials. We prove a number of results for interpolation polynomials and the associated coefficients. These include positivity and monotonicity results for binomial coefficients, partial positivity results for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, and weighted sum formulas for both kinds of coefficients. As a special case of our results we obtain a new symmetric function inequality, which establishes a ``duality'' between Jack expansion positivity for symmetric functions, and the containment order on partitions, with respect to the shifted basis $Ω_λ({\bf1}+x;τ)$, where ${\bf1} =(1,\ldots,1)$ and $Ω_λ(x;τ)=P_λ(x;τ)/P_λ({\bf1};τ)$ is the normalized Jack polynomial. Our inequality can be seen as an analog of the inequalities of Cuttler--Greene--Skandera+Sra and Khare--Tao, which establish similar dualities between evaluation positivity on the positive orthant, and the dominance and weak dominance orders on partitions, with respect to the normalized Schur basis $Ω_λ(x)=s_λ(x)/s_λ({\bf1})$ and its shifted version $Ω_λ({\bf1}+x)$, respectively. In contrast to our result, the Jack versions of the two latter inequalities, although expected to hold, have not yet been proved.

Extension of Bressoud's generalization of Borwein's conjecture and some exact results
Published in The Ramanujan Journal (2025) • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we conjecture an extension to Bressoud's 1996 generalization of Borwein's famous 1990 conjecture. We then state a few infinite hierarchies of non-negative $q$-series identities which are interesting examples of our proposed conjecture and Bressoud's generalized conjecture. Finally, using certain positivity-preserving transformations for $q$-binomial coefficients, we prove the non-negativity of the infinite families.

Explicit expressions for the gamma vector leading to connections to upper/lower bounds and structural properties
We find an explicit formula for the gamma vector in terms of the input polynomial in a way that extends it to arbitrary polynomials. More specifically, we find explicit linear combination in terms of coefficients of the input polynomial (using Catalan numbers and binomial coefficients) and an expression involving the derivative of the input polynomial. The first expression suggests connections to common Coxeter group/noncrossing partition structures in existing gamma positivity examples. In the case where the input is the $h$-polynomial of a simplicial complex, this gives an interpretation of the gamma vector as a measure of differences in local and global contributions. We also apply them to connect signs/inequalities of (shifts of) the gamma vector to upper/lower bound conditions on coefficients of the input polynomial. Finally, we make use of the shape of the sums used to make these estimates and connections with intersection numbers to relate these properties of the gamma vector to algebraic structures (e.g. characteristic classes involved in existing log concavity and Schur positivity properties).
q-Parikh Matrices and q-deformed binomial coefficients of words
Published • View Publication • BIB
We have introduced a q-deformation, i.e., a polynomial in q with natural coefficients, of the binomial coefficient of two finite words u and v counting the number of occurrences of v as a subword of u. In this paper, we examine the q-deformation of Parikh matrices as introduced by Eğecioğlu in 2004. Many classical results concerning Parikh matrices generalize to this new framework: Our first important observation is that the elements of such a matrix are in fact q-deformations of binomial coefficients of words. We also study their inverses and as an application, we obtain new identities about q-binomials. For a finite word z and for the sequence $(p_n)_{n\ge 0}$ of prefixes of an infinite word, we show that the polynomial sequence $\binom{p_n}{z}_q$ converges to a formal series. We present links with additive number theory and k-regular sequences. In the case of a periodic word $u^ω$, we generalize a result of Salomaa: the sequence $\binom{u^n}{z}_q$ satisfies a linear recurrence relation with polynomial coefficients. Related to the theory of integer partition, we describe the growth and the zero set of the coefficients of the series associated with $u^ω$. Finally, we show that the minors of a q-Parikh matrix are polynomials with natural coefficients and consider a generalization of Cauchy's inequality. We also compare q-Parikh matrices associated with an arbitrary word with those associated with a canonical word $12\cdots k$ made of pairwise distinct symbols.

Introducing q-deformed binomial coefficients of words
Published • View Publication • BIB
Gaussian binomial coefficients are q-analogues of the binomial coefficients of integers. On the other hand, binomial coefficients have been extended to finite words, i.e., elements of the finitely generated free monoids. In this paper we bring together these two notions by introducing q-analogues of binomial coefficients of words. We study their basic properties, e.g., by extending classical formulas such as the q-Vandermonde and Manvel's et al. identities to our setting. As a consequence, we get information about the structure of the considered words: these q-deformations of binomial coefficients of words contain much richer information than the original coefficients. From an algebraic perspective, we introduce a q-shuffle and a family q-infiltration products for non-commutative formal power series. Finally, we apply our results to generalize a theorem of Eilenberg characterizing so-called p-group languages. We show that a language is of this type if and only if it is a Boolean combination of specific languages defined through q-binomial coefficients seen as polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_p$.
A Family of Low-Complexity Binary Codes with Constant Hamming Weights
In this paper, we focus on the design of binary constant weight codes that admit low-complexity encoding and decoding algorithms, and that have a size $M=2^k$. For every integer $\ell \geq 3$, we construct a $(n=2^\ell, M=2^{k_{\ell}}, d=2)$ constant weight code ${\cal C}[\ell]$ of weight $\ell$ by encoding information in the gaps between successive $1$'s. The code is associated with an integer sequence of length $\ell$ with a constraint defined as {\em anchor-decodability} that ensures low complexity for encoding and decoding. The complexity of the encoding is linear in the input size $k$, and that of the decoding is poly-logarithmic in the input size $n$, discounting the linear time spent on parsing the input. Both the algorithms do not require expensive computation of binomial coefficients, unlike the case in many existing schemes. Among codes generated by all anchor-decodable sequences, we show that ${\cal C}[\ell]$ has the maximum size with $k_{\ell} \geq \ell^2-\ell\log_2\ell + \log_2\ell - 0.279\ell - 0.721$. As $k$ is upper bounded by $\ell^2-\ell\log_2\ell +O(\ell)$ information-theoretically, the code ${\cal C}[\ell]$ is optimal in its size with respect to two higher order terms of $\ell$. In particular, $k_\ell$ meets the upper bound for $\ell=3$ and one-bit away for $\ell=4$. On the other hand, we show that ${\cal C}[\ell]$ is not unique in attaining $k_{\ell}$ by constructing an alternate code ${\cal \hat{C}}[\ell]$ again parameterized by an integer $\ell \geq 3$ with a different low-complexity decoder, yet having the same size $2^{k_{\ell}}$ when $3 \leq \ell \leq 7$. Finally, we also derive new codes by modifying ${\cal C}[\ell]$ that offer a wider range on blocklength and weight while retaining low complexity for encoding and decoding. For certain selected values of parameters, these modified codes too have an optimal $k$.

Formulas involving Cauchy polynomials, Bernoulli polynomials, and generalized Stirling numbers
Published in Axioms 2025, 14, 746 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we derive novel formulas and identities connecting Cauchy numbers and polynomials with both ordinary and generalized Stirling numbers, binomial coefficients, central factorial numbers, Euler polynomials, $r$-Whitney numbers, and hyperharmonic polynomials, as well as Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. We also provide formulas for the higher-order derivatives of Cauchy polynomials and obtain corresponding formulas and identities for poly-Cauchy polynomials. Furthermore, we introduce a multiparameter framework for poly-Cauchy polynomials, unifying earlier generalizations like shifted poly-Cauchy numbers and polynomials with a $q$ parameter.

Combinatorial sums, series and integrals involving odd harmonic numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present several types of ordinary generating functions involving central binomial coefficients, harmonic numbers, and odd harmonic numbers. Our results complement those of Boyadzhiev from 2012 and Chen from 2016. Based on these generating functions we evaluate several infinite series in closed form. In addition, we offer some combinatorial sum identities involving Catalan numbers, harmonic numbers and odd harmonic numbers. Finally, we analyze a special log-integral with Fibonacci numbers and odd harmonic numbers.

Asymptotic products of binomial and multinomial coefficients revisited
Published in Integers 24 (2024), Article A59, 1-10 • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we consider asymptotic products of binomial and multinomial coefficients and determine their asymptotic constants and formulas. Among them, special cases are the central binomial coefficients, the related Catalan numbers, and binomial coefficients in a row of Pascal's triangle. For the latter case, we show that it can also be derived from a limiting case of products of binomial coefficients over the rows. The asymptotic constants are expressed by known constants, for example, the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant. In addition, the constants lie in certain intervals that we determine precisely. Subsequently, we revisit a related result of Hirschhorn and clarify the given numerical constant by showing the exact expression.

Beyond Wolstenholme's Theorem
Wolstenholme's type summations involve certain powers of all residues $k$ modulo some prime number $p$. We first consider the sums of double or triple products of certain powers of all residues, e.g., the sums of the terms $(a+k)^m(b+k)^n$ or $(a+k)^m(b+k)^n(c+k)^s$ as $k$ ranges over all residues modulo $p$. We consider the sums of double or triple ratios of such terms. We showed that each of such sums is congruent to some simpler expression involving certain binomial coefficients. We also generalize these results to the sums of products or ratios of arbitrary $n$ terms: $(a_1+k)^{m_1}$, ..., $(a_n+k)^{m_n}$. We relate such summations to the sum of certain coefficients of polynomials of type $(a_1-a_n+x)^{m_1} \cdots (a_{n-1}-a_n+x)^{m_{n-1}}$.

Refining Blecher and Knopfmacher's Integer Partition Fixed Points
Published in Enumer. Combin. Appl. 4:4 (2024) S2R26 • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Blecher and Knopfmacher explored the notion of fixed points in integer partitions. Here, we distinguish partitions with a fixed point by which value is fixed and analyze the resulting triangle of integers. In particular, we confirm various identities for diagonal sums, row sums, and antidiagonal sums (which are finite for this triangle) and establish a four-term recurrence for triangle entries analogous to Pascal's lemma for the triangle of binomial coefficients. The partition statistics crank and mex arise. All proofs are combinatorial.

A multiparametric Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Macdonald polynomials
Published in J. Comb. Theory A 207 (2024), 10592032 (34pp) • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new family of operators as multi-parameter deformation of the one-row Macdonald polynomials. The matrix coefficients of these operators acting on the space of symmetric functions with rational coefficients in two parameters $q,t$ (denoted by $Λ[q,t]$) are computed by assigning some values to skew Macdonald polynomials in $λ$-ring notation. The new rule is utilized to provide new iterative formulas and also recover various existing formulas in a unified manner. Specifically the following applications are discussed: (i) A $(q,t)$-Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Macdonald functions is given as a generalization of the $q$-Murnaghan-Nakayama rule; (ii) An iterative formula for the $(q,t)$-Green polynomial is deduced; (iii) A simple proof of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the Hecke algebra and the Hecke-Clifford algebra is offered; (iv) A combinatorial inversion of the Pieri rule for Hall-Littlewood functions is derived with the help of the vertex operator realization of the Hall-Littlewood functions; (v) Two iterative formulae for the $(q,t)$-Kostka polynomials $K_{λμ}(q,t)$ are obtained from the dual version of our multiparametric Murnaghan-Nakayama rule, one of which yields an explicit formula for arbitrary $λ$ and $μ$ in terms of the generalized $(q, t)$-binomial coefficient introduced independently by Lassalle and Okounkov.

The Binomial-Stirling-Eulerian Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the binomial-Stirling-Eulerian polynomials, denoted $\tilde{A}_n(x,y|α)$, which encompass binomial coefficients, Eulerian numbers and two Stirling statistics: the left-to-right minima and the right-to-left minima. When $α=1$, these polynomials reduce to the binomial-Eulerian polynomials $\tilde{A}_n(x,y)$, originally named by Shareshian and Wachs and explored by Chung-Graham-Knuth and Postnikov-Reiner-Williams. We investigate the $γ$-positivity of $\tilde{A}_n(x,y|α)$ from two aspects: firstly by employing the grammatical calculus introduced by Chen; and secondly by constructing a new group action on permutations. These results extend the symmetric Eulerian identity found by Chung, Graham and Knuth, and the $γ$-positivity of $\tilde{A}_n(x,y)$ first demonstrated by Postnikov, Reiner and Williams.

An exactly solvable asymmetric $K$-exclusion process
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor., Vol 57 no. 31, (2024) 315001, 24pp • View Publication • BIB
We study an interacting particle process on a finite ring with $L$ sites with at most $K$ particles per site, in which particles hop to nearest neighbors with rates given in terms of $t$-deformed integers and asymmetry parameter $q$, where $t>0$ and $q \geq 0$ are parameters. This model, which we call the $(q, t)$~$K$-ASEP, reduces to the usual ASEP on the ring when $K = 1$ and to a model studied by Schütz and Sandow (\emph{Phys. Rev. E}, 1994) when $t = q = 1$. This is a special case of the misanthrope process and as a consequence, the steady state does not depend on $q$ and is of product form, generalizing the same phenomena for the ASEP. What is interesting here is the steady state weights are given by explicit formulas involving $t$-binomial coefficients, and are palindromic polynomials in $t$. Interestingly, although the $(q, t)$~$K$-ASEP does not satisfy particle-hole symmetry, its steady state does. We analyze the density and calculate the most probable number of particles at a site in the steady state in various regimes of $t$. Lastly, we construct a two-dimensional exclusion process on a discrete cylinder with height $K$ and circumference $L$ which projects to the $(q, t)$~$K$-ASEP and whose steady state distribution is also of product form. We believe this model will serve as an illustrative example in constructing two-dimensional analogues of misanthrope processes. Simulations are attached as ancillary files.

Two product formulas for counting successive vertex orderings
A vertex ordering of a graph $G$ is a bijection $π\colon\{1,\dots,|V(G)|\}\to V(G)$. It is successive if the induced subgraph $G[v_{π(1)},\dots,v_{π(k)}]$ is connected for each $k$. Lixing Fang, Hao Huang, János Pach, Gábor Tardos, and Junchi Zuo [J. Comb. Theory A199 (2023), 105776] gave formulas for counting the number of successive vertex orderings for a class of graphs they called "fully regular," and conjectured that these formulas could be written as certain products involving differences or ratios of binomial coefficients in two cases: When the graph is the line graph $L(K_n^{(3)})$ of the complete $3$-uniform hypergraph, or when it is the line graph $L(K_{m,n}^{(1,2)})$ of a complete "bipartite" $3$-uniform hypergraph. In this paper, we confirm both of these conjectures.

Binomial sum relations involving Fibonacci and Lucas numbers

In this paper, we introduce relations between binomial sums involving (generalized) Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, and different kinds of binomial coefficients. We also present some relations between sums with two and three binomial coefficients. In the course of exploration we rediscover a few relations presented as problem proposals.
