The persistent homology of the Linial-Meshulam process
For a fixed dimension $k\ge 1$, let us consider the randomly growing simplical complex on the vertex set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ defined as follows: We start with the empty complex, and for each $k+1$-element subset $σ$ of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, we add $σ$ and all of its subsets to the complex at some random time $t_σ$, where $(t_σ)$ are i.i.d. uniform random elements of $[0,n]$. As the complex evolves, new $k-1$-dimensional cycles are born and then at a later time they die, that is, they get filled in. The notion of persistence diagrams, which is a standard tool in topological data analysis, provides a way to record these birth and death times. In this paper, we understand the asymptotic behavior of the persistence diagrams of the above defined randomly evolving complexes as $n$ goes to infinity. As the single time marginals of the above process are variants of the Linial-Meshulam complex, our results can be viewed as extensions of the results of Linial and Peled on the Betti numbers of the Linial-Meshulam complex. Our proof relies on the notion of local weak convergence of graphs and a generalization of the results of Bordenave, Lelarge and Salez on the rank of sparse random matrices.
Asymptotic invariants of symbolic powers of binomial edge ideals
To a graph $G$ one associates the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ generated by a collection of binomials corresponding to the edges of $G$. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of symbolic powers of $J_G$, its lexicographic initial ideal $\mathrm{in}_<(J_G)$, and its multigraded generic initial ideal $\mathrm{gin}(J_G)$. We focus on the Waldschmidt constant, $\widehatα$, and asymptotic regularity, $\widehat{\mathrm{reg}}$, which capture linear growth of minimal generator degrees and Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity. We explicitly compute $\widehatα(J_G)$ and $\widehatα(\mathrm{in}_<(J_G))$, and compare the Betti numbers of the symbolic powers of $J_G$ and $J_H$, where $H$ is a subgraph of $G$. To analyze $\mathrm{in}_<(J_G)$ and $\mathrm{gin}(J_G)$, we use the symbolic polyhedron, a convex polyhedron that encodes the elements of the symbolic powers of a monomial ideal. We determine its vertices via $G$'s induced connected subgraphs and show that $\widehatα(\mathrm{gin}(J_G))=\widehatα(I_G)$, where $I_G$ is the edge ideal of $G$. This yields an alternate proof of known bounds for $\widehatα(I_G)$ in terms of $G$'s clique number and chromatic number.

Matrix Points on Varieties
We study the cohomology of $C_n(X)$, the moduli space of commuting $n$-by-$n$ matrices satisfying the equations defining a variety $X$. This space can be viewed as a non-commutative Weil restriction from the algebra of $n$-by-$n$ matrices to the ground field. We introduce a ``Fermionic" counterpart $S_n(X)$, constructed as a convolution $X^n \times^{S_n} \mathrm{GL}_n/\mathrm{T}_n$. Our main result establishes that a natural map $σ\colon S_n(X) \to C_n(X)$ induces an isomorphism on $\ell$-adic cohomology under mild conditions on $X$ or the characteristic of the field. This confirms a heuristic derived from the classical theory of Weil restrictions and highlights a version of Boson-Fermion correspondence. Furthermore, we derive explicit combinatorial formulae for the Betti numbers of $C_n(X)$ and a Macdonald-type generating series. Finally we prove a Hermitian variant of our main result.

The Graded Betti Numbers of the Skeletons of Simplicial Complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study a class $\mathcal{C}$ of squarefree monomial ideals $I\subseteq R=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$, defined by the condition that $\dim R/I$ equals the maximum degree of the minimal generators of $I$ minus one. We show that the Stanley-Reisner ideal of every $i$-skeleton of a simplicial complex $Δ$ belongs to $\mathcal{C}$ for all $-1\le i<\dimΔ$. To investigate their homological properties, we introduce the notion of a degree resolution and prove that every ideal in $\mathcal{C}$ possesses this property. Moreover, we show that every squarefree monomial ideal admits a truncation whose regularity coincides with that of the original ideal, thereby reducing the study of degree resolutions to that of linear resolutions. Finally, we provide an explicit formula describing the relationship between the graded Betti numbers of a simplicial complex and those of its skeletons.

The typical algebraic shifting of a surface
We initiate a statistical study of Kalai's exterior algebraic shifting, focusing on concentration phenomena for random triangulations of a fixed space. First, for a uniform $n$-vertex refinement of any given graph $G$, we show that asymptotically almost-surely (a.a.s.) its exterior algebraic shifting is an explicit shifted graph depending only on $n$ and the Betti numbers of $G$. Next, for any given compact connected Riemannian surface $S$, sample $n$ points independently at random according to the volume measure, and consider the resulted a.a.s. unique Delaunay triangulation. We prove that a.a.s. its exterior algebraic shifting is an explicit shifted complex depending only on $n$ and the genus of $S$. In both results the expected shifted complex is a homology lex-segment complex, a notion we define combinatorially and characterize numerically a lá Björner-Kalai. As a tool to prove the result on surfaces, we prove a universality result on edge contractions: for every fixed surface triangulation $K$, every dense enough point set in the surface yields a Delaunay triangulation that edge contracts to $K$.

Signature 0 toric varieties, wall crossings, and cross polytope-like structures
We describe the structure of simplicial locally convex fans associated to even-dimensional complete toric varieties with signature 0. They belong to the set of such toric varieties whose even degree Betti numbers yield a top gamma vector component equal to 0. The gamma vector is an invariant of palindromic polynomials whose nonnegativity lies between unimodality and real-rootedness. It is known (and expected more generally) that the cases where this top component is 0 are among the "building blocks" of those where it is nonnegative. This means minimality with respect to a certain restricted class of blowups. However, this equality to 0 case is currently poorly understood. In the course of addressing this situation, we find that this interpretation encodes *intrinsic* combinatorial information on the fan in addition to earlier compatibility with existing natural combinatorial examples. Our main method uses wall crossings. The links of the fan come from a repeated suspension of the maximal linear subspace in its realization in the ambient space of the fan. Conversely, the centers of these links containing any particular line form a cone or a repeated suspension of one. The intersection patterns between these "anchoring" linear subspaces come from how far certain submodularity inequalities are from equality and parity conditions on their dimensions. This involves linear dependence and containment relations between them which are connected to optimization. We obtain these relations by viewing the vanishing of certain mixed volumes from the perspective of the exponents. Finally, these wall crossings yield a simple method of generating induced 4-cycles covering the minimal objects described above. We intersect rational equivalence relations with 2-dimensional orbit closures instead of 1-dimensional ones as in most combinatorial applications.

Complements of finite unions of convex sets
Finite unions of convex sets are a central object of study in discrete and computational geometry. In this paper we initiate a systematic study of complements of such unions -- i.e., sets of the form $S=\mathbb{R}^d \setminus (\cup_{i=1}^n K_i)$, where $K_i$ are convex sets. In the first part of the paper we study isolated points in $S$, whose number is related to the Betti numbers of $\cup_{i=1}^n K_i$ and to its non-convexity properties. We obtain upper bounds on the number of such points, which are sharp for $n=3$ and significantly improve previous bounds of Lawrence and Morris (2009) for all $n \ll \frac{2^d}{d}$. In the second part of the paper we study coverings of $S$ by well-behaved sets. We show that $S$ can be covered by at most $g(d,n)$ flats of different dimensions, in such a way that each $x \in S$ is covered by a flat whose dimension equals the `local dimension' of $S$ in the neighborhood of $x$. Furthermore, we determine the structure of a minimum cover that satisfies this property. Then, we study quantitative aspects of this minimum cover and obtain sharp upper bounds on its size in various settings.

A decomposition of graph a-numbers
We study the $a$-sequence $(a_0(G), a_1(G), \cdots)$ of a finite simple graph $G$, defined recursively through a combinatorial rule and known to coincide with the sequence of rational Betti numbers of the real toric variety associated with $G$. In this paper, we establish a combinatorial and topological decomposition formula for the $a$-sequence. As an application, we show that the $a$-sequence is monotone under graph inclusion; that is, $a_i(G) \geq a_i(H)$ for all $i \geq 0$ whenever $H$ is a subgraph of $G$, and obtain the lower and upper bounds of $a_i$-numbers. We also prove that the $a$-sequence is unimodal in $i$ for a broad class of graphs $G$, including those with a Hamiltonian circuit or a universal vertex. These results provide a new class of topological spaces whose Betti number sequences are unimodal but not necessarily log concave, contributing to the study of real loci in algebraic geometry.

Spectral radius of simplicial complexes without holes
The Turán problem for hypergraphs and its spectral version is a central and challenging topic in extremal combinatorics. In this paper, we view hypergraphs from the perspective of simplicial complexes, and investigate the spectral version of Turán problem for simplicial complexes. We characterize the simplicial complex that maximizes the signless Laplacian spectral radius among all hole-free simplicial complexes, and establish an upper bound on the spectral radius for simplicial complexes with a prescribed Betti number. As an application, we derive bounds on Turán numbers for both hypergraphs and simplicial complexes via the connection between the spectral radius and the face numbers.

Betti numbers of fold products of linear forms
Published • View Publication • BIB
The ideals generated by fold products of linear forms are generalizations of powers of defining ideals of star configurations, or of Veronese type ideals, and in this paper we study their Betti numbers. In earlier work, the authors together with Yu Xie showed that these ideals have linear graded free resolution, and in this paper we take the study of the homological information about these ideals to the next natural level.

Cubic torus obstructions of small Betti number
The embeddability of graphs into surfaces has been studied for nearly a century. While the complete set of topological obstructions is known for the sphere and the real projective plane, there are only partial results for the torus. Here we present a theoretical classification of cubic torus obstructions with Betti number at most eight.

An acyclic $d$-partition of the $r$-uniform complete hypergraph $K_{rd}^{(r)}$
In this paper we introduce a $d$-partition $\mathcal{E}_d^{(r)}=(Ω_1^{(r,d)}, Ω_2^{(r,d)},\dots, Ω_d^{(r,d)})$ of the $r$-uniform complete hypergraph $K_{rd}^{(r)}$. We prove that $\mathcal{E}_d^{(r)}$ is homogeneous and that each hypergraph $Ω_i^{(r,d)}$ is acyclic (i.e. has zero Betti numbers). As an application, we show that the map $det^{S^r}$ is nontrivial for every $r$, which gives a partial answer to a conjecture from [14].
Study of higher-order interactions in unweighted, undirected networks using persistent homology
Persistent homology has been studied to better understand the structural properties and topology features of weighted networks. It can reveal hidden layers of information about the higher-order structures formed by non-pairwise interactions in a network. Studying of higher-order interactions (HoIs) of a system provides a more comprehensive understanding of the complex system; moreover, it is a more precise depiction of the system as many complex systems, such as ecological systems and biological systems, etc., demonstrate HoIs. In this study, the weighted simplicial adjacency matrix has been constructed using the concept of adjacency strength of simplices in a clique complex obtained from an unweighted, undirected network. This weighted simplicial adjacency matrix is thus used to calculate the global measure, which is called generalised weighted betweenness centrality, which further helps us in calculating the persistent homology on the given simplicial complex by constructing a filtration on it. Moreover, a local measure called maximal generalised degree centrality has also been established for better understanding of the network topology of the studied simplicial complex. All the generalizations given in this work can be reduced to the graph-theoretic case. i.e., for a simplicial complex of dimension 1. Three different filtration schemes for constructing the sequence of simplicial complexes have been given with the help of both global and local measures, and by using these measures, the topology of higher-order structures of the studied network due to the interactions of their vertices has been compared. Further, the illustration of established definitions has been given using a real-life network by calculating Betti numbers up to dimension two.

Hilbert polynomials of configuration spaces over graphs of circumference at most 1
The $ k $-configuration space $ B_kΓ$ of a topological space $ Γ$ is the space of sets of $ k $ distinct points in $ Γ$. In this paper, we consider the case where $ Γ$ is a graph of circumference at most $1$. We show that for all $ k\ge0 $, the $ i $-th Betti number of $ B_kΓ$ is given by a polynomial $P_Γ^i(k)$ in $ k $, called the Hilbert polynomial of $ Γ$. We find an expression for the Hilbert polynomial $P_Γ^i(k)$ in terms of those coming from the canonical $1$-bridge decomposition of $ Γ$. We also give a combinatorial description of the coefficients of $P_Γ^i(k)$.

Local cohomology and singular cohomology of toric varieties via mixed Hodge modules
Given an affine toric variety $X$ embedded in a smooth variety, we prove a general result about the mixed Hodge module structure on the local cohomology sheaves of $X$. As a consequence, we prove that the singular cohomology of a proper toric variety is mixed of Hodge-Tate type. Additionally, using these Hodge module techniques, we derive a purely combinatorial result on rational polyhedral cones that has consequences regarding the depth of reflexive differentials on a toric variety. We then study in detail two important subclasses of toric varieties: those corresponding to cones over simplicial polytopes and those corresponding to cones over simple polytopes. Here, we give a comprehensive description of the local cohomology in terms of the combinatorics of the associated cones, and calculate the Betti numbers (or more precisely, the Hodge-Du Bois diamond) of a projective toric variety associated to a simple polytope.

Betti number estimates for non-negatively curved graphs
In this paper, we establish Betti number estimates for graphs with non-negative Ollivier curvature, and for graphs with non-negative Bakry-Émery curvature, providing a discrete analogue of a classical result by Bochner for manifolds. Specifically, we show that for graphs with non-negative Ollivier curvature, the first Betti number is bounded above by half of the minimum combinatorial vertex degree. In contrast, for graphs with non-negative Bakry-Émery curvature, we prove that the first Betti number of the path homology is bounded above by the minimum combinatorial vertex degree minus one. We further present various rigidity results, characterizing graphs that attain the upper bound on the first Betti number under non-negative Ollivier curvature. Remarkably, these graphs are precisely the discrete tori, similar to the Riemannian setting. Furthermore, we show that the results obtained using the Ollivier curvature extend to the setting of potentially non-reversible Markov chains. Additionally, we explore rigidity cases depending on the idleness parameter of the Ollivier curvature, i.e., we characterize rigidity for bone-idle graphs with non-negative Ollivier curvature that attain the upper Betti number bound. We further establish an upper bound on the first Betti number under a more general assumption, where non-negative Ollivier curvature is required only outside a finite subset. Finally, we provide several examples, e.g., we prove that for a potentially non-reversible Markov chain on a cycle of length at least five, there always exists a unique path metric with constant Ollivier curvature. Moreover, this metric has non-negative Ollivier curvature, and the upper Betti number bound is attained if and only if the curvature is zero.

Full subcomplexes of Bier spheres
Full subcomplexes of a simplicial complex encode essential structure for understanding the complex itself. For a simplicial complex $K$, possibly with a ghost vertex, the Bier sphere of $K$ is a simplicial sphere obtained as the deleted join of $K$ and its combinatorial Alexander dual. In this paper, we determine the homotopy types of all full subcomplexes of Bier spheres. As applications, we provide a formula for the bigraded Betti numbers of the Bier sphere of $K$ in terms of full subcomplexes of $K$, and we explicitly describe the cohomology of real toric manifolds associated with Bier spheres.

Extremal Betti Numbers and Persistence in Flag Complexes
We investigate several problems concerning extremal Betti numbers and persistence in filtrations of flag complexes. For graphs on $n$ vertices, we show that $β_k(X(G))$ is maximal when $G=\mathcal{T}_{n,k+1}$, the Turán graph on $k+1$ partition classes, where $X(G)$ denotes the flag complex of $G$. Building on this, we construct an edgewise (one edge at a time) filtration $\mathcal{G}=G_1\subseteq \cdots \subseteq \mathcal{T}_{n,k+1}$ for which $β_k(X(G_i))$ is maximal for all graphs on $n$ vertices and $i$ edges. Moreover, the persistence barcode $\mathcal{B}_k(X(G))$ achieves a maximal number of intervals, and total persistence, among all edgewise filtrations with $|E(\mathcal{T}_{n,k+1})|$ edges. For $k=1$, we consider edgewise filtrations of the complete graph $K_n$. We show that the maximal number of intervals in the persistence barcode is obtained precisely when $G_{\lceil n/2\rceil \cdot \lfloor n/2 \rfloor}=\mathcal{T}_{n,2}$. Among such filtrations, we characterize those achieving maximal total persistence. We further show that no filtration can optimize $β_1(X(G_i))$ for all $i$, and conjecture that our filtrations maximize the total persistence over all edgewise filtrations of $K_n$.
Realizing resolutions of powers of extremal ideals
Extremal ideals are a class of square-free monomial ideals which dominate and determine many algebraic invariants of powers of all square-free monomial ideals. For example, the $r^{th}$ power ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ of the extremal ideal on $q$ generators has the maximum Betti numbers among the $r^{th}$ power of any square-free monomial ideal with $q$ generators. In this paper we study the combinatorial and geometric structure of the (minimal) free resolutions of powers of square-free monomial ideals via the resolutions of powers of extremal ideals. Although the end results are algebraic, this problem has a natural interpretation in terms of polytopes and discrete geometry. Our guiding conjecture is that all powers ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ of extremal ideals have resolutions supported on their Scarf simplicial complexes, and thus their resolutions are as small as possible. This conjecture is known to hold for $r \leq 2$ or $q \leq 4$. In this paper we prove the conjecture holds for $r=3$ and any $q\geq 1$ by giving a complete description of the Scarf complex of ${\mathcal{E}_q}^3$. This effectively gives us a sharp bound on the betti numbers and projective dimension of the third power of any square-free momomial ideal. For large $i$ and $q$, our bounds on the $i^{th}$ betti numbers are an exponential improvement over previously known bounds. We also describe a large number of faces of the Scarf complex of ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ for any $r,q \geq 1$.

Cohomology of type $B$ real permutohedral varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Type $A$ and type $B$ permutohedral varieties are classic examples of mathematics, and their topological invariants are well known. This naturally leads to the investigation of the topology of their real loci, known as type $A$ and type $B$ real permutohedral varieties. The rational cohomology rings of type $A$ real permutohedral varieties are fully described in terms of alternating permutations. Until now, only rational Betti numbers of type $B$ real permutohedral varieties have been described in terms of $B$-snakes. In this paper, we explicitly describe the multiplicative structure of the cohomology rings of type $B$ real permutohedral varieties in terms of $B$-snakes.
