Extremal problems related to Betti numbers of flag complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the problem of maximizing Betti numbers of simplicial complexes. We prove an upper bound of 1.32^n for the sum of Betti numbers of any n-vertex flag complex and 1.25^n for the independence complex of a triangle-free graph. These findings imply upper bounds for the Betti numbers of various related classes of spaces, including the neighbourhood complex of a graph. We also make some related observations.

Special cycles in independence complexes and superfrustration in some lattices

We prove that the independence complexes of some grids have exponential Betti numbers. This corresponds to the number of ground states in the hard-core model in statistical physics with fermions in the vertices of the grid.

Note on resonance varieties
We study the irreducibility of resonance varieties of graded rings over an exterior algebra E with particular attention to Orlik-Solomon algebras. We prove that for a stable monomial ideal in E the first resonance variety is irreducible. If J is an Orlik- Solomon ideal of an essential central hyperplane arrangement, then we show that its first resonance variety is irreducible if and only if the subideal of J generated by all degree 2 elements has a 2-linear resolution. As an application we characterize those hyperplane arrangements of rank less than or equal to 3 where J is componentwise linear. Higher resonance varieties are also considered. We prove results supporting a conjecture of Schenck-Suciu relating the Betti numbers of the linear strand of J and its first resonance variety. A counter example is constructed that this conjecture is not true for arbitrary graded ideals.

Free arrangements and coefficients of characteristic polynomials

Ziegler showed that free arrangements have free restricted multiarrangements (multirestrictions). After Ziegler's work, several results concerning "reverse direction", namely characterizing freeness of an arrangement via that of multirestriction, have appeared. In this paper, we prove that the second Betti number of the arrangement plays a crucial role.

Hamming weights and Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
To each linear code over a finite field we associate the matroid of its parity check matrix. We show to what extent one can determine the generalized Hamming weights of the code (or defined for a matroid in general) from various sets of Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes associated to the matroid.

Convex pencils of real quadratic forms
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the topology of the set X of the solutions of a system of two quadratic inequalities in the real projective space RP^n (e.g. X is the intersection of two real quadrics). We give explicit formulae for its Betti numbers and for those of its double cover in the sphere S^n; we also give similar formulae for level sets of homogeneous quadratic maps to the plane. We discuss some applications of these results, especially in classical convexity theory. We prove the sharp bound b(X)\leq 2n for the total Betti number of X; we show that for odd n this bound is attained only by a singular X. In the nondegenerate case we also prove the bound on each specific Betti number b_k(X)\leq 2(k+2).
On the graph labellings arising from phylogenetics
Published in Central European Journal of Mathematics, 11(9), 2013, 1577-1592 • View Publication • BIB
We study semigroups of labellings associated to a graph. These generalize the Jukes-Cantor model and phylogenetic toric varieties defined by Buczyńska. Our main theorem bounds the degree of the generators of the semigroup by g+1 when the graph has first Betti number g. Also, we provide a series of examples where the bound is sharp.

Sheaves on Graphs, Their Homological Invariants, and a Proof of the Hanna Neumann Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we establish some foundations regarding sheaves of vector spaces on graphs and their invariants, such as homology groups and their limits. We then use these ideas to prove the Hanna Neumann Conjecture of the 1950's; in fact, we prove a strengthened form of the conjecture. We introduce a notion of a sheaf of vector spaces on a graph, and develop the foundations of homology theories for such sheaves. One sheaf invariant, its "maximum excess," has a number of remarkable properties. It has a simple definition, with no reference to homology theory, that resembles graph expansion. Yet it is a "limit" of Betti numbers, and hence has a short/long exact sequence theory and resembles the $L^2$ Betti numbers of Atiyah. Also, the maximum excess is defined via a supermodular function, which gives the maximum excess much stronger properties than one has of a typical Betti number. Our sheaf theory can be viewed as a vast generalization of algebraic graph theory: each sheaf has invariants associated to it---such as Betti numbers and Laplacian matrices---that generalize those in classical graph theory. We shall use "Galois graph theory" to reduce the Strengthened Hanna Neumann Conjecture to showing that certain sheaves, that we call $ρ$-kernels, have zero maximum excess. We use the symmetry in Galois theory to argue that if the Strengthened Hanna Neumann Conjecture is false, then the maximum excess of "most of" these $ρ$-kernels must be large. We then give an inductive argument to show that this is impossible.

A cell complex in number theory

Let De_n be the simplicial complex of squarefree positive integers less than or equal to n ordered by divisibility. It is known that the asymptotic rate of growth of its Euler characteristic (the Mertens function) is closely related to deep properties of the prime number system. In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the individual Betti numbers and of their sum. We show that De_n has the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres, and that as n tends to infinity: $$\sum \be_k(\De_n) = \frac{2n}{π^2} + O(n^θ),\;\; \mbox{for all} θ> \frac{17}{54}.$$ We also study a CW complex tDe_n that extends the previous simplicial complex. In tDe_n all numbers up to n correspond to cells and its Euler characteristic is the summatory Liouville function. This cell complex is shown to be homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres, and as n tends to infinity: $$\sum \be_k(\tDe_n) = \frac{n}{3} + O(n^θ),\;\; \mbox{for all} θ> \frac{22}{27}.$$

Betti numbers of Stanley--Reisner rings with pure resolutions
Let $Δ$ be simplicial complex and let $k[Δ]$ denote the Stanley--Reisner ring corresponding to $Δ$. Suppose that $k[Δ]$ has a pure free resolution. Then we describe the Betti numbers and the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicity of $k[Δ]$ in terms of the $h$--vector of $Δ$. As an application, we derive a linear equation system for the components of the $h$--vector of the clique complex of an arbitrary chordal graph.

The $f$--vector of the clique complex of chordal graphs and Betti numbers of edge ideals of uniform hypergraphs
We describe the Betti numbers of the edge ideals $I(G)$ of uniform hypergraphs $G$ such that $I(G)$ has linear graded free resolution. We give an algebraic equation system and some inequalities for the components of the $f$--vector of the clique complex of an arbitrary chordal graph. Finally we present an explicit formula for the multiplicity of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the edge ideals of any chordal graph.

Algebraic properties of product of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ and $H$ be two simple graphs and let $G*H$ denotes the graph theoretical product of $G$ by $H$. In this paper we provide some results on graded Betti numbers, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, projective dimension, $h$-vector, and Hilbert series of $G*H$ in terms of that information of $G$ and $H$. To do this, we will provide explicit formulae to compute graded Betti numbers, $h$-vector, and Hilbert series of disjoint union of complexes. Also we will prove that the family of graphs whose regularity equal the maximum number of pairwise $3$-disjoint edges, is closed under product of graphs.

On the Homology of the Real Complement of the $k$-Parabolic Subspace Arrangement
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study $k$-parabolic arrangements, a generalization of the $k$-equal arrangement for any finite real reflection group. When $k=2$, these arrangements correspond to the well-studied Coxeter arrangements. We construct a cell complex $Perm_k(W)$ that is homotopy equivalent to the complement. We then apply discrete Morse theory to obtain a minimal cell complex for the complement. As a result, we give combinatorial interpretations for the Betti numbers, and show that the homology groups are torsion free. We also study a generalization of the Independence Complex of a graph, and show that this generalization is shellable when the graph is a forest. This result is used in studying $Perm_k(W)$ using discrete Morse theory.

Small Cover and Halperin-Carlsson Conjecture -II
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a small cover Q^n and any principal (Z_2)^m-bundle M^n over Q^n, it was shown in a previous work of the author that the total sum of Z_2-Betti numbers of M^n is at least 2^m. In this paper, we prove that when M^n is connected, the total sum of Z_2-Betti numbers of such an M^n exactly equals 2^m if and only if M^n is homeomorphic to a product of spheres, and Q^n in this case must be a generalized real Bott manifold (or equivalent, Q^n is a small cover over a product of simplices).

Moment-angle complexes and polyhedral products for convex polytopes
Published in Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 275(1), 2011, 15-46 • View Publication • BIB
Let P be a convex polytope not simple in general. In the focus of this paper lies a simplicial complex K_P which carries complete information about the combinatorial type of P. In the case when P is simple, K_P is the same as dP*, where P* is a polar dual polytope. Using the canonical embedding of a polytope P into nonnegative orthant, we introduce a moment-angle space Z_P for a polytope P. It is known, that in the case when P is simple the space Z_P is homeomorphic to the polyhedral product (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. When P is not simple, we prove that the space Z_P is homotopically equivalent to the space (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. This allows to introduce bigraded Betti numbers for any convex polytope. A Stanley-Reisner ring of a polytope P can be defined as a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex K_P. All these considerations lead to a natural question: which simplicial complexes arise as K_P for some polytope P? We have proceeded in this direction by introducing a notion of a polytopic simplicial complex. It has the following property: link of each simplex in a polytopic complex is either contractible, or retractible to a subcomplex, homeomorphic to a sphere. The complex K_P is a polytopic simplicial complex for any polytope P. Links of so called face simplices in a polytopic complex are polytopic complexes as well. This fact is sufficient enough to connect face polynomial of a simplicial complex K_P to the face polynomial of a polytope P, giving a series of inequalities on certain combinatorial characteristics of P. Two of these inequalities are equalities for each P and represent Euler-Poincare formula and one of Bayer-Billera relations for flag f-numbers. In the case when P is simple all inequalities turn out to be classical Dehn-Sommerville relations.

Dependence of Betti Numbers on Characteristic
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the dependence of graded Betti numbers of monomial ideals on the characteristic of the base field. The examples we describe include bipartite ideals, Stanley--Reisner ideals of vertex-decomposable complexes and ideals with componentwise linear resolutions. We give a description of bipartite graphs and, using discrete Morse theory, provide a way of looking at the homology of arbitrary simplicial complexes through bipartite ideals. We also prove that the Betti table of a monomial ideal over the field of rational numbers can be obtained from the Betti table over any field by a sequence of consecutive cancellations.

Limit theorems for Betti numbers of random simplicial complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
There have been several recent articles studying homology of various types of random simplicial complexes. Several theorems have concerned thresholds for vanishing of homology, and in some cases expectations of the Betti numbers. However little seems known so far about limiting distributions of random Betti numbers. In this article we establish Poisson and normal approximation theorems for Betti numbers of different kinds of random simplicial complex: Erdős-Rényi random clique complexes, random Vietoris-Rips complexes, and random Čech complexes. These results may be of practical interest in topological data analysis.

Betti numbers of smooth Schubert varieties and the remarkable formula of Kostant,Macdonald,Shapiro and Steinberg
Published • View Publication • BIB
The purpose of this note is to give a refinement of the product formula proved in [1] for the Poincare polynomial of a smooth Schubert variety in the flag variety of an algebraic group G over C. This yields a factorization of the number of elements in a Bruhat interval [e,w] in the Weyl group W of G provided the Schubert variety associated to w is smooth. This gives an elementary necessary condition for a Schubert variety in the flag variety to be smooth.
