On the k-Systems of a Simple Polytope
Published • View Publication • BIB
A k-system of the graph G(P) of a simple polytope P is a set of induced subgraphs of G(P) that shares certain properties with the set of subgraphs induced by the k-faces of P. This new concept leads to polynomial-size certificates in terms of G(P) for both the set of vertex sets of facets as well as for abstract objective functions (AOF) in the sense of Kalai. Moreover, it is proved that an acyclic orientation yields an AOF if and only if it induces a unique sink on every 2-face.

Reconstructing a non-simple polytope from its graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-known theorem of Blind and Mani says that every simple polytope is uniquely determined by its graph. Kalai gave a very short and elegant proof of this result using the concept of acyclic orientations. As it turns out, Kalai's proof can be suitably generalized without much effort. We apply our results to a special class of cubical polytopes.

Sinks in Acyclic Orientations of Graphs
Published in J. Combin. Theory (B) 80 (2000) 130-146 • View Publication • BIB
Greene and Zaslavsky proved that the number of acyclic orientations of a graph with a unique sink is, up to sign, the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial. We give three new proofs of this result using pure induction, noncommutative symmetric functions, and an algorithmic bijection.

A note on a combinatorial interpretation of the e-coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function
Stanley has studied a symmetric function generalization X_G of the chromatic polynomial of a graph G. The innocent-looking Stanley-Stembridge Poset Chain Conjecture states that the expansion of X_G in terms of elementary symmetric functions has nonnegative coefficients if G is a clawfree incomparability graph. Here we give a combinatorial interpretation of these coefficients by combining Gasharov's work on the conjecture with Egecioglu and Remmel's combinatorial interpretation of the inverse Kostka matrix. This gives a new proof of a partial nonnegativity result of Stanley. As an interesting byproduct we derive a previously unnoticed result relating acyclic orientations to P-tableaux.
