An obstruction to the maximal singularity of the Hilbert scheme of points on threefolds
We prove a necessary condition conjecture ([27, Conjecture B]) for the maximal singularity of the Hilbert scheme of points in 3D for a large class of degrees, which in particular implies the 1978 Briançon-Iarrobino Conjecture for a tetrahedral degree, and vastly generalises the result in [19]. The novelty lies in introducing a new upper bound on the dimensions of the tangent spaces of the claimed non-maximally singular ideals, constructing canonical ideals that satisfy the claimed maximal singularity condition, providing a lower bound on the dimension of their tangent spaces, and finally comparing the two cases.
Artin-Schreier geproci configurations in projective spaces of arbitrary dimension
We construct finite geproci sets in every projective dimension and in every positive characteristic by introducing $\mathbb{F}_N$-Artin-Schreier configurations. In $\mathbb{P}^3$, we characterize exactly when such configurations are geproci: an $\mathbb{F}_N$-Artin-Schreier configuration on $q$ lines spanning $\mathbb{P}^3$ is $(q,N)$-geproci if and only if $q\leq N$. We then develop a lifting construction which produces geproci sets in $\mathbb{P}^n$ for every $n\geq 3$.
Most $(0,1)$-polytopes are not normal
We prove that the proportion of $0/1$-equivalence classes of $d$-dimensional $(0,1)$-polytopes that are normal tends to zero at least at a double exponential rate as $d\to\infty$. As a consequence, the same holds for any of the following classes given by the type of triangulation possible: (a) quadratic, (b) flag unimodular, (c) regular unimodular, or (d) unimodular, among others.
We classify the $0/1$-equivalence classes of $d$-dimensional $(0,1)$-polytopes for $d\leq5$ according to whether they admit a unimodular, flag unimodular, or quadratic triangulation. In dimension five, exactly $175$ out of $1{,}226{,}525$ classes have a flag unimodular triangulation, but no quadratic triangulation. Among them, there are polytopes whose toric rings are not Koszul; thus, we find the first polytopes that have a flag unimodular triangulation, but whose toric ring is not Koszul. In contrast with the matroid case, we exhibit a delta-matroid polytope that is not normal.
Localized Persistent Commutative Algebra
We develop a localized persistent theory of commutative algebra for Stanley-Reisner rings, based on local cohomology supported at a coordinate prime rather than at the maximal ideal. The construction is modeled on the persistent Stanley-Reisner theory of Suwayyid and Wei (arXiv:2503.23482) and its functorial development for graphs and hypergraphs (arXiv:2512.17619), in which invariants of the face ring such as graded Betti numbers and f- and h-vectors are persisted across a filtration. That framework is built from the minimal free resolution and is thus Tor-theoretic; we work instead on the injective side, and the resulting modules record information localized at a single vertex, complementing the global picture given by maximal-support local cohomology. For a vertex prime $p_i = (x_j : j \neq i)$ we prove an exact $\mathbb{Z}^n$-graded decomposition of $H^q_{p_i}(k[Δ])$ into the maximal-support local cohomology of the deletion and of the link of the vertex $i$, the first in $x_i$-degree zero and the second repeated in every positive $x_i$-degree; at the level of graded dimensions this recovers the vertex-prime case of Rahimi's bigraded formula. With Hochster's formula this yields a closed combinatorial description of every multigraded piece. Building on this structure we introduce per-vertex persistent local cohomology numbers, prove a persistent links-Hochster formula, obtain interval decompositions of the resulting reversed-arrow persistence modules and a bottleneck stability theorem, retain multiplication by the uninverted variable as a morphism of persistence modules that the two barcodes alone do not determine, and extend the theory to an arbitrary coordinate prime, where the multiplication maps of the uninverted variables assemble into a commuting Boolean diagram of persistence modules.
Palindromic real-rooted polynomials and $h$-vectors of polytopes
We prove that every monic palindromic real-rooted polynomial with nonnegative integer coefficients is the $h$-polynomial of a simplicial convex polytope. This resolves in the affirmative a longstanding problem circulated by Brenti since 2004.
Symbolic Rees algebras of complementary edge ideals
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $[n]$ and let $I_c(G)$ denote its complementary edge ideal in the polynomial ring $S = K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$. We give a combinatorial description, in terms of the structure of $G$, of the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}_s(I_c(G)) = \bigoplus_{k \geq 0} I_c(G)^{(k)} t^k$, and show that this algebra is generated in degree at most $6$. Moreover, we completely determine the minimal generators of $\mathcal{R}_{s}(I_{c}(G))$ in graph-theoretic terms. We then study in more detail the homological invariants of the symbolic powers $I_c(G)^{(k)}$ for the classes of cycle graphs and complete multipartite graphs. For theses families, we study the behavior of the symbolic depth function $k\mapsto\operatorname{depth} S/I_c(G)^{(k)}$, we obtain the limit depth of the symbolic powers and the Waldschmidt constant of $I_c(G)$, and further prove that all the symbolic powers $I_c(G)^{(k)}$ are componentwise linear.
Resultant of an equivariant polynomial system with respect to a direct product of $r$ symmetric groups
In this paper we study the resultant of systems of homogeneous multivariate polynomials which are equivariant under the action of a direct product of symmetric groups. We first treat, in detail, the case of a product of two symmetric groups, and establish a decomposition formula for the resultant of such systems. We then show that this decomposition, together with the underlying combinatorics, extends to an arbitrary (finite) direct product of $r$ symmetric groups. Thanks to these decomposition formulas, we prove that the discriminant of a multivariate homogeneous polynomial invariant under a direct product of $r$ symmetric groups splits into a product of resultants of smaller size that are easier to compute.
Edge codes constructed from unicyclic graphs
Jaramillo-Velez recently introduced edge codes, a new class of toric evaluation codes constructed from the edges of a (hyper)graph $\mathcal{H}$. In the case that $\mathcal{H}$ is a tree, Jaramillo-Velez computed both the minimum distance and the weight distribution of the associated code. In this paper, we study edge codes associated to unicyclic graphs. Our most striking result is that computing the parameters of these codes is subtle in the case that the induced cycle has an even length because these values will depend on certain conditions regarding the length of the cycle and the size of the base field.
Specht ideals for the imprimitive complex reflection group $G(r,1,n)$: geometric orbit types and a dominance theorem
Moustrou, Riener, and Verdure related the dominance order on partitions to Specht ideal and variety inclusion for $S_n$; we previously extended this to direct products of symmetric groups. Here we take a first step toward the imprimitive complex reflection group $G(r,1,n)=(\mathbb{Z}/r\mathbb{Z})\wr S_n$. The correct geometric invariant of a point $x\in K^n$ is a pair $(μ,z)$: a classical partition $μ$ on the $r$-th powers of the nonzero coordinates, together with the number $z$ of zero coordinates. We construct a $G(r,1,n)$-invariant ideal $I_{(μ,z)}$ for each such pair, and show that a dominance order on $(μ,z)$, with $z$ taking strict priority over $μ$, exactly characterizes both ideal inclusion and reverse variety inclusion. We settle a monomial criterion in three regimes, recover the classical $B_n$-Specht ideal theory at $r=2$ when $z=0$, and establish radicality of $I_{(μ,z)}$ at the two extremes of the $z=0$ level. Four computational examples, checked exhaustively for group invariance, illustrate the construction throughout.
Diagonal F-threshold of binomial edge ideals
We compute the diagonal $F$-threshold of binomial edge ideals associated to graphs in the case of cycles, cycles with whiskers, bipartite graphs, and block graphs. Moreover, we provide general bounds for any graph.
Boxicity and Threshold Dimension of Zero Divisor Graphs
The zero divisor graph $Γ(R)$ of a finite commutative ring $R$ has as vertices the non-zero zero divisors of $R$, with an edge between two elements exactly when their product is zero.
We determine the boxicity and threshold dimension of $Γ(R)$ for two classes of finite commutative rings: reduced rings and quotients of principal ideal domains.
Our proofs use a new combinatorial gadget, the integral covering graph, that captures the structure shared by both ring families and generalizes the disjointness graph on subsets of $[n]$, where two subsets are adjacent if and only if they are disjoint.
In doing so, we answer two questions recently posed by L.~Sunil Chandran and Suraj Kumar Sahoo in Boxicity of Zero Divisor Graphs, Discrete Applied Mathematics 391 (2026).
Graded Ehrhart theory for hypersimplices
We prove that the $q$-Ehrhart series of a hyperplane slice of a cube is a rational function with an explicit denominator that satisfies $q$-reciprocity, confirming a conjecture of Reiner and Rhoades for these polytopes. To do this, we find a generating set for the orbit harmonics ideal, which also yields the Hilbert series and graded Frobenius characteristic of the associated quotient. We further show that the harmonic algebra of a hypersimplex $Δ$ is generated as an algebra by the harmonic space of $Δ$ using structural results on 2-factors of regular multigraphs. In particular, the harmonic algebra is finitely generated, giving a second proof of rationality.
Multi-graded generic initial ideals, regularity, and the optimal colorful fractional Helly theorem for $d$-Leray complexes
A celebrated result of Bayer and Stillman from 1987 states that for a homogeneous ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$, the regularities of $S/I$ and $S/\textrm{GIN}(I)$ are the same under the reverse lexicographic monomial ordering, where $\textrm{GIN}(I)$ is the generic initial ideal. If $R$ is a polynomial ring whose variables are subdivided into disjoint blocks of variables $X_1,\dots,X_c$, there is a natural multi-grading on $R$, and one can analogously define a multi-graded version of the generic initial ideal for any multi-homogeneous ideal $I$ of $R$. However, the full strength of the Bayer--Stillman Theorem fails in the multi-graded setting; there are multi-homogeneous ideals $I$ such that the regularities are not preserved after passing to the multi-graded generic initial ideal no matter the choice of monomial ordering.
We prove lower bounds on the regularity of $R/I$ in terms of almost regular sequences of the multi-graded generic initial ideal of $I$ restricted to each block of variables. Again, we use the reverse lexicographic monomial ordering, but interestingly, the lower bound result requires a particular choice of ordering on the variables.
As an application, we prove the optimal fractional Helly theorem for $d$-Leray simplicial complexes, a problem stemming from the work of Kim in 2017.
Componentwise linear monomial ideals
Let $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ with ${\rm deg} x_1=\cdots ={\rm deg} x_n = 1$ and ${\bf a} = (a_1,\ldots,a_n) \in {\mathbb Z}_{>0}^n$. Given a squarefree monomial $u=x_{i_1} \cdots x_{i_d}$ of $S$ with $1 \leq i_1 < \cdots < i_d \leq n$, we set $u^{[{\bf a}]}:=x_{i_1}^{a_{i_1}}\cdots x_{i_d}^{a_{i_d}}$. Let $I$ be a squarefree monomial ideal of $S$ and $G(I)$ its unique minimal set of monomial generators. We introduce the monomial ideal $I^{[{\bf a}]}$ with $G(I^{[{\bf a}]})=\{u^{[{\bf a}]} : u \in G(I)\}$. In the present paper, componentwise linearity of a squarefree monomial ideal $I$ and that of $I^{[{\bf a}]}$ is studied.
A tight bound for affine-linearity, via universal ballot matrices
Based on work with Greenfeld and with Ziegler, Tao showed a concatenation result that if a map $f : \mathbb{F}^2 \to \mathbb{F}$ is affine-linear on every line parallel to the coordinate axes, and on all lines with a fixed nonzero slope (where the field $\mathbb{F}$ has size $> 2$), then $f$ is affine-linear on $\mathbb{F}^2$. We extend this from $\mathbb{F}^2$ to $\mathbb{F}^n$ and obtain a tight minimum number of additional lines needed -- $N = \binom{n}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$ -- for every field $\mathbb{F}$ with $3 \leqslant n < |\mathbb{F}|$.
The proof is constructive and shows a stronger result: the existence of a universal family of $0$-$1$ matrices of size $\binom{n}{k} \times \binom{n}{k}$ (one for each pair $0 \leqslant k \leqslant n$), which are indexed by ballot sets and are unimodular over all unital commutative rings. We also show a second tightness: of the assumption $n < |\mathbb{F}|$. Else, there exist multi-affine maps $f$ which are affine-linear on every line through the origin, but not affine-linear globally on $\mathbb{F}^n$. More strongly, we prove this dichotomy -- including the bound of $N$ -- over all integral domains, or Noetherian (e.g.\ finite or Artinian) rings, or products of these. This yields a novel numerical invariant for affine-linearity, for every product of Noetherian rings and integral domains.
Point Counts of Cluster Varieties of Marked Surfaces Over Finite Fields
We establish formulae for point counts of cluster varieties of cluster algebras of marked surfaces, possibly with punctures. We then establish formulae for the number of non-deep points in these cluster varieties over $\mathbb{F}_2$, which gives us the number of algebraic tori necessary to cover the cluster manifold over $\mathbb{F}_2$. We also show that these formulae satisfy certain recurrence relations.
Resultant of an equivariant polynomial system with respect to the reflection group $G(r,n)$
We consider systems of homogeneous multivariate polynomials equivariant under the complex reflection group $G(r,n) = (\mathbb{Z}/r\mathbb{Z})^n \rtimes S_n$. Using divided differences indexed by partitions of $n$, we establish a decomposition formula expressing the resultant of such a system as a product of resultants of smaller, partition-indexed subsystems. Combining this with the classical resultant--discriminant relation, we show that the discriminant of a $G(r,n)$-invariant homogeneous polynomial splits explicitly into a product of resultants of smaller subsystems, considerably easier to compute; we illustrate both decompositions with worked examples.
Clique number and triangle densities in $C_4$-free graphs
For a $C_4$-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices --- one with no induced cycle on four vertices --- we study the two-sided extremal problem for the triangle density $τ$: How large and how small can $τ$ be for given edge density $\varepsilon$ and clique-number density $κ= ω(G)/n$?
We give lower and upper bounds for $τ$ in terms of $κ$ and $\varepsilon$. The two bounds sandwich $τ$, and their compatibility forces a lower bound for $κ$ in terms of $\varepsilon$. When the clique complex of $G$ is $2$-Leray over a field $\Bbbk$, the resulting bound on the clique-number density lies between the previous best $C_4$-free bound and the sharp chordal bound. It improves on the former {\it for every} $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$.
The lower bound is elementary. The upper bound is homological, obtained by passing to the Stanley--Reisner ring of the clique complex. When the complex is $2$-Leray, its Betti table has at most two linear strands. The two first entries in the first strand encode edge and triangle densities, and the strong structural form of a Boij--Söderberg decomposition constrains what these entries can be, yielding the upper bound.
For $2$-Leray graphs with no holes in the range $[4,g]$ we give a conjecturally sharp bound. We further ask questions concerning the triangle bound for any $C_4$-free graph.
V-numbers of powers of cover ideals of unimodular hypergraphs
Let $H$ be a unimodular hypergraph with cover ideal $J(H)$. We prove that the local $v$-numbers of $J(H)^t$ are linear in $t$ for all $t\ge1$. We further show that the global $v$-number of $J(H)^t$ is linear in $t$ for all $t\ge n-1$. Finally, we prove that the global $v$-number of the powers of the cover ideal of any tree is linear in $t$ for all $t\ge1$.
The radial derivative on the graded Möbius algebra
Let $M$ be a simple matroid and let $B(M)$ be the graded Möbius algebra of its lattice of flats. The ordered-basis weights of flats define an inner product for which the adjoints of atom multiplication become ordinary coordinate derivatives under the basis-polynomial realization. From this, we construct a canonical global lowering operator $D_β$ which acts as ordinary differentiation on a canonical ``radial'' copy of a truncated polynomial algebra. Allowing both $D_β$ and the coordinate derivatives to act produces a graded cyclic module with Hilbert series \[ H_{β,M}(q)=\sum_{k=0}^r h_k^β(M)q^k. \] We give examples of matroids with the same Derksen $\mathcal G$-invariant and the same classical apolar Hilbert series but different $H_β$. Hence $H_β$ cannot be the restriction to simple matroids of a valuative matroid invariant.
We conjecture that $H_β$ is log-concave and top-heavy in differential degree. For the generalized theta family containing Larson's counterexample to Whitney log-concavity, we compute the first four coefficients and prove the critical log-concavity inequality. Exact computation verifies both conjectures for all $950$ simple matroids on eight elements.
