An asymptotically tight bound on oriented diameter
Let $f(d)$ be the smallest integer such that every finite connected bridgeless simple graph of diameter $d$ admits a strong orientation of diameter at most $f(d)$. Chvátal and Thomassen (1978) proved $\lceil d^2/2\rceil+d\le f(d)\le2d^2+2d$. In this paper, we prove that $\lceil d^2/2\rceil+d\le f(d)\le\lceil d^2/2\rceil+d+18$ for every $d\ge2$, which shows that $f(d)=\lceil d^2/2\rceil+d+O(1)$ and determines both the quadratic and linear terms up to a bounded additive error.
The key method of our proof is to construct a central subgraph $H$ that admits a strong orientation of diameter $O(d)$ and is within distance $\lfloor d/2\rfloor$ of every vertex outside it. We obtain the sharp linear coefficient by jointly estimating outside paths and their connecting paths in $H$ at the actual attachment vertices, rebuilding $H$ when necessary.
An asymptotically tight bound on oriented diameter
Let $f(d)$ be the smallest integer such that every connected bridgeless graph of diameter $d$ admits an orientation with directed diameter at most $f(d)$. Chvátal and Thomassen (1978) proved $\left\lceil{d^2}/{2}\right\rceil+d\le f(d) \le 2d^2+2d$. In this paper, we prove that $f(d)\le \left\lceil d^2/2\right\rceil+6d$, which shows $f(d)= d^2/2+Θ(d)$ and determine the leading quadratic coefficient of $f(d)$.
The key method of our proof is to construct a central subgraph $H$ such that it admits a strong orientation of diameter $O(d)$ and the distance between $H$ and every vertex outside $H$ is at most $ d/2 $.
The diameter of recoloring graphs under a maximum average degree bound
For a graph $G$, we write $\mathrm{mad}(G)$ for its maximum average degree and $\mathrm{diam} G$ for its diameter. Let $R_k(G)$ be the graph whose vertices are the proper colorings of $G$ with $k$ colors, where two colorings are adjacent when they differ at one vertex. Feghali (JCTB, 2021) proved that, for fixed integers $d,k\ge 1$ with $k\ge d+1$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, every $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying $\mathrm{mad}(G)\le d-\varepsilon$ has $\mathrm{diam} R_k(G)=O_{d,k,\varepsilon}(n(\log n)^{d-1})$. In this article, we prove that \[
\mathrm{diam} R_k(G)=O_{d,k,\varepsilon}\!\left(
n(\log n)^{\left\lfloor (d-1)/(k-d)\right\rfloor}
\right), \] which extends the result proved by Feghali directly. The proof uses a partition into independent layers and removes $k-d$ colors at each recursive stage. We also improve the bound on the number of layers and determine the best possible linear coefficient in the forest case. More precisely, for $0<\varepsilon<2$, every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\mathrm{mad}(G)\le2-\varepsilon$ satisfies $\mathrm{diam} R_3(G)\leρ_M n$, where $M=\lfloor2/\varepsilon\rfloor$, $ρ_M=\max_{1\le m\le M}D_m/m$, and $D_m$ is the largest diameter of $R_3(T)$ over all trees $T$ on $m$ vertices. Moreover, the coefficient $ρ_M$ is best possible.
Clique-saturating non-edges throughout the Turán range
For an $F$-free graph $G$, a non-edge is $F$-saturating if adding it to $G$ creates a copy of $F$. We denote by $f_{p+1}(n,m)$ the minimum number of $K_{p+1}$-saturating non-edges in a $K_{p+1}$-free $n$-vertex graph with $m$ edges. Erdős and Tuza conjectured that $f_4\left(n,\mathrm{ex}(n,K_3)+ 1\right)= (1 + o(1)) \frac{n^2}{16}$. Balogh and Liu (JCTB, 2014) disproved this conjecture and determined the asymptotic value of $f_4(n,\mathrm{ex}(n,K_3)+1)$. He, Ma, Ma and Ye (JCTB, 2023) later determined $f_{p+1}(n,\mathrm{ex}(n,K_p)+1)$ asymptotically for every $p\ge 3$, and asked for the value of $f_{p+1}(n,m)$ for all $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_p)+1\le m\le \mathrm{ex}(n,K_{p+1})$ and every $p\ge 3$. In this paper, we answer their question asymptotically for all $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_p)+1\le m\le \mathrm{ex}(n,K_{p+1})$ and every $p\ge 3$. We also determine the exact value of $f_3(n,m)$ for all $0\le m\le \mathrm{ex}(n,K_3)$ by a different method.
Two-block cycles and chromatic number of Hamiltonian digraphs
Let $k$ and $\ell$ be positive integers. The family $C(k,\ell)$ consists of all digraphs obtained from two internally vertex-disjoint directed paths of lengths at least $k$ and $\ell$, respectively, and identifying their initial vertices and their terminal vertices. Addario-Berry, Havet and Thomassé (JCT-B, 2007) asked whether, for any positive integers $k$ and $\ell$ with $k+\ell \ge 4$, the chromatic number $χ(D)$ is at most $k+\ell-1$ for every $C(k,\ell)$-free strongly connected digraph $D$. Let $D$ be a $C(k,\ell)$-free Hamiltonian digraph. Kim, Kim, Ma and Park (JGT, 2018) showed that $χ(D) \le k+\ell$ and the bound is attained when $k+\ell=5$. In this paper, we prove that $χ(D) \le k+\ell-1$ for $k+\ell\ge 6$ and this bound is best possible for all $k+\ell\geq 6$, which resolves the problem posed by Addario-Berry, Havet and Thomassé for Hamiltonian digraphs.
A note on long nontrivial cycle in Hamiltonian graphs
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph containing a Hamiltonian cycle and with minimum degree at least $3$. Girão, Kittipassorn and Narayanan (Israel J. Math., 2019) proved that $G$ contains another cycle of length at least $n-O(n^{4/5})$. In this paper, we improve their bound to $n-O(n^{2/3})$. Our proof is combined with a constructive method, which is based on a poset result, and a nonconstructive method. And the bound is best possible under these two methods.
