Kirkman's hypothesis revisited
Watson proved Kirkman's hypothesis (partially solved by Cayley). Using Lagrange Inversion, we drastically shorten Watson's computations and generalize his results at the same time.
Lagrangian Matroids associated with Maps on Orientable Surfaces
The aim of the paper is to clarify the nature of combinatorial structures associated with maps on closed compact surfaces. We prove that maps give rise to Lagrangian matroids representable in a setting provided by cohomology of the surface with punctured points. Our proof is very elementary.
We further observe that the greedy algorithm has a natural interpretation in this setting, as a `peeling' procedure which cuts the (connected) surface into a closed ring-shaped peel, and that this procedure is local.
Oriented Lagrangian Matroids

In this paper we present a definition of oriented Lagrangian symplectic matroids and their representations. Classical concepts of orientation and this extension may both be thought of as stratifications of thin Schubert cells into unions of connected components. The definitions are made first in terms of a combinatorial axiomatisation, and then again in terms of elementary geometric properties of the Coxeter matroid polytope. We also generalise the concept of rank and signature of a quadratic form to symplectic Lagrangian matroids in a surprisingly natural way.
The critical group of a directed graph
The critical group K(G) of a directed graph G=(V,E) is the cokernel of the transpose of the Laplacian matrix of G acting on the integer lattice Z^V. For undirected graphs G, this has been considered by Bacher, de la Harpe, and Nagnibeda, and by Biggs. We prove several things, among which are: K(G/p) is a subgroup of K(G) when p is an equitable partition and G is strongly connected; for undirected graphs, the torsion subgroup of K(G) depends only on the graphic matroid of G; and, the `dollar game' of Biggs can be generalized to give a combinatorial interpretation for the elements of K(G), when G is strongly connected.

We study the isospectral Hilbert scheme X_n, defined as the reduced fiber product of C^2n with the Hilbert scheme H_n of points in the plane, over the symmetric power S^n C^2. We prove that X_n is normal, Cohen-Macaulay, and Gorenstein, and hence flat over H_n. We derive two important consequences.
(1) We prove the strong form of the "n! conjecture" of Garsia and the author, giving a representation-theoretic interpretation of the Kostka-Macdonald coefficients K_{lambda,mu}(q,t). This establishes the Macdonald positivity conjecture, that K_{lambda,mu}(q,t) is always a polynomial with non-negative integer coefficients.
(2) We show that the Hilbert scheme H_n is isomorphic to the Hilbert scheme of orbits C^2n//S_n, in such a way that X_n is identified with the universal family over C^2n//S_n.
Nonlinearity, Local and Global Avalanche Characteristics of Balanced Boolean Functions
First, we construct a class of functions with good local avalanche characteristics, but bad global avalanche characteristics. We also derive some bounds for the nonlinearity of such functions. It improves upon the results of Son et al., and Sung et al. In our second result we construct a class of highly nonlinear balanced functions with good local and global avalanche characteristics.

We study the nonlinearity and the weight of the rotation-symmetric (RotS) functions defined by Pieprzyk and Qu. We give exact results for the nonlinearity and weight of 2-degree RotS functions with the help of the semi-bent functions and we give the generating function for the weight of the 3-degree RotS function. Based on the numerical examples and our observations we state a conjecture on the nonlinearity and weight of the 3-degree RotS functions.

We investigate some combinatorial properties of convex polytopes simple in edges. For polytopes whose nonsimple vertices are located sufficiently far one from another, we prove an analog of the Hard Lefschetz theorem. It implies Stanley's conjecture for such polytopes.

If L, respectively R are matrices with entries binom{i-1,j-1}, respectively binom{i-1,n-j}, it is known that L^2 = I (mod 2), respectively R^3 = I (mod 2), where I is the identity matrix of dimension n > 1 (see P10735-May 1999 issue of the American Mathematical Monthly). We generalize it for any prime p, and give a beautiful connection to Fibonacci numbers.
Annihilators of Ideals of Exterior Algebras
The Orlik-Solomon algebra A of a matroid is isomorphic to the quotient of an exterior algebra E by a defining ideal I. We find an explicit presentation of the annihilator ideal of I or, equivalently, the E-module dual to A. As an application of that we provide a necessary, combinatorial condition for the algebra A to be quadratic. We show that this is stronger than matroid being line-closed thereby resolving (negatively) a conjecture by Falk. We also show that our condition is not sufficient for the quadraticity.

We give elementary derivations of several classical and some new summation and transformation formulae for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. For purpose of motivation, we review our previous simple proof ("A simple proof of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation", Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear) of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation. Using a similar but different method, we now give elementary derivations of some transformations for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. In particular, these include M. Jackson's very-well-poised 8-psi-8 transformation, a very-well-poised 10-psi-10 transformation, by induction, Slater's general transformation for very-well-poised 2r-psi-2r series, and Slater's transformation for general r-psi-r series. Finally, we derive some new transformations for bilateral basic hypergeometric series of Chu-Gasper-Karlsson-Minton-type.

In this article, we derive some identities for multilateral basic hypergeometric series associated to the root system A_n. First, we apply Ismail's argument to an A_n q-binomial theorem of Milne and derive a new A_n generalization of Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation theorem. From this new A_n 1-psi-1 summation and from an A_n 1-psi-1 summation of Gustafson we deduce two lemmas for deriving simple A_n generalizations of bilateral basic hypergeometric series identities. These lemmas are closely related to the Macdonald identities for A_n. As samples for possible applications of these lemmas, we provide several A_n extensions of Bailey's 2-psi-2 transformations, and several A_n extensions of a particular 2-psi-2 summation.
Line-closed matroids, quadratic algebras, and formal arrangements

Let $G$ be a matroid on ground set \A. The Orlik-Solomon algebra $A(G)$ is the quotient of the exterior algebra \E on \A by the ideal \I generated by circuit boundaries. The quadratic closure $\bar{A}(G)$ of $A(G)$ is the quotient of \E by the ideal generated by the degree-two component of \I. We introduce the notion of \nbb set in $G$, determined by a linear order on \A, and show that the corresponding monomials are linearly independent in the quadratic closure $\bar{A}(G)$. As a consequence, $A(G)$ is a quadratic algebra only if $G$ is line-closed. An example of S.~Yuzvinsky proves the converse false. These results generalize to the degree $r$ closure of $\A(G)$.
The motivation for studying line-closed matroids grew out of the study of formal arrangements. This is a geometric condition necessary for \A to be free and for the complement $M$ of \A to be a $K(π,1)$ space. Formality of \A is also necessary for $A(G)$ to be a quadratic algebra. We clarify the relationship between formality, line-closure, and other matroidal conditions related to formality. We give examples to show that line-closure of $G$ is not necessary or sufficient for $M$ to be a $K(π,1)$, or for \A to be free.
Generating Functions, Weighted and Non-Weighted Sums for Powers of Second-Order Recurrence Sequences
In this paper we find closed form for the generating function of powers of any non-degenerate second-order recurrence sequence, completing a study begun by Carlitz and Riordan in 1962. Moreover, we generalize a theorem of Horadam on partial sums involving such sequences. Also, we find closed forms for weighted (by binomial coefficients) partial sums of powers of any non-degenerate second-order recurrence sequences. As corollaries we give some known and seemingly unknown identities and derive some very interesting congruence relations involving Fibonacci and Lucas sequences.

These lectures present a survey of recent developments in the area of random matrices (finite and infinite) and random permutations. These probabilistic problems suggest matrix integrals (or Fredholm determinants), which arise very naturally as integrals over the tangent space to symmetric spaces, as integrals over groups and finally as integrals over symmetric spaces. An important part of these lectures is devoted to showing that these matrix integrals, upon apropriately adding time-parameters, are natural tau-functions for integrable lattices, like the Toda, Pfaff and Toeplitz lattices, but also for integrable PDE's, like the KdV equation. These matrix integrals or Fredholm determinants also satisfy Virasoro constraints, which combined with the integrable equations lead to (partial) differential equations for the original probabilities.

The toric Hilbert scheme parametrizes all algebras isomorphic to a given semigroup algebra as a multigraded vectorspace. All components of the scheme are toric varieties, and among them, there is a fairly well understood coherent component. However, it is unknown whether toric Hilbert schemes are always connected. In this chapter we illustrate the use of Macaulay 2 for exploring the structure of toric Hilbert schemes. In the process we will encounter algorithms from commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, polyhedral theory and geometric combinatorics.
