Tree-like properties of cycle factorizations
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory ser. A, 98 (2002), 106--117 • View Publication • BIB
We provide a bijection between the set of factorizations, that is, ordered (n-1)-tuples of transpositions in ${\mathcal S}_{n}$ whose product is (12...n), and labelled trees on $n$ vertices. We prove a refinement of a theorem of Dénes that establishes new tree-like properties of factorizations. In particular, we show that a certain class of transpositions of a factorization correspond naturally under our bijection to leaf edges of a tree. Moreover, we give a generalization of this fact.

The General O(n) Quartic Matrix Model and its application to Counting Tangles and Links
Published in Commun.Math.Phys. 238 (2003) 287-304 • View Publication • BIB
The counting of alternating tangles in terms of their crossing number, number of external legs and connected components is presented here in a unified framework using quantum field-theoretic methods applied to a matrix model of colored links. The overcounting related to topological equivalence of diagrams is removed by means of a renormalization scheme of the matrix model; the corresponding ``renormalization equations'' are derived. Some particular cases are studied in detail and solved exactly.

2-enumerations of halved alternating sign matrices
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien Combin. 46, (2001), Article B46c, 11pp • Search Publication
We compute 2-enumerations of certain halved alternating sign matrices. In one case the enumeration equals the number of perfect matchings of a halved Aztec diamond. In the other case the enumeration equals the number of perfect matchings of a halved fortress graph. Our results prove three conjectures by Jim Propp.

Generalized Umemura polynomials and Hirota-Miwa equations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study generalized Umemura polynomials $U_{n,m}^{(k)}(z,w;a,b)$ which are the natural generalization of the Umemura polynomials $U_n(z,w;a,b)$ related to the Painleve VI equation. We show that if either a=b, or a=0, or b=0, then polynomials $U_{n,m}^{(0)}(z,w;a,b)$ generate solutions to the Painleve VI equation. We give new proof of Noumi-Okada-Okamoto-Umemura conjecture, and describe connections between polynomials $U_{n,m}^{(0)}(z,w;a,0)$ and certain Umemura polynomials $U_k(z,w;α,β)$. Finally we show that after appropriate rescaling, Umemura's polynomials $U_k(z,w;a,b)$ satisfy the Hirota-Miwa bilinear equations.

Gomory Integer Programs
The set of all group relaxations of an integer program contains certain special members called Gomory relaxations. A family of integer programs with a fixed coefficient matrix and cost vector but varying right hand sides is a Gomory family if every program in the family can be solved by one of its Gomory relaxations. In this paper, we characterize Gomory families. Every TDI system gives a Gomory family, and we construct Gomory families from matrices whose columns form a Hilbert basis for the cone they generate. The existence of Gomory families is related to the Hilbert covering problems that arose from the conjectures of Sebo. Connections to commutative algebra are outlined at the end.

Absolutely indecomposable representations and Kac-Moody Lie algebras (with an appendix by Hiraku Nakajima)
A conjecture of Kac states that the polynomial counting the number of absolutely indecomposable representations of a quiver over a finite field with given dimension vector has positive coefficients and furthermore that its constant term is equal to the multiplicity of the corresponding root in the associated Kac-Moody Lie algebra. In this paper we prove these conjectures for indivisible dimension vectors.

Mathematics of learning
We study the convergence properties of a pair of learning algorithms (learning with and without memory). This leads us to study the dominant eigenvalue of a class of random matrices. This turns out to be related to the roots of the derivative of random polynomials (generated by picking their roots uniformly at random in the interval [0, 1], although our results extend to other distributions). This, in turn, requires the study of the statistical behavior of the harmonic mean of random variables as above, which leads us to delicate question of the rate of convergence to stable laws and tail estimates for stable laws. The reader can find the proofs of most of the results announced here in the paper entitled "Harmonic mean, random polynomials, and random matrices", by the same authors.

Improved bounds on the number of ternary square-free words
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 4 (2001), Ar ticle 01.2.7 • Search Publication
Improved upper and lower bounds on the number of square-free ternary words are obtained. The upper bound is based on the enumeration of square-free ternary words up to length 110. The lower bound is derived by constructing generalised Brinkhuis triples. The problem of finding such triples can essentially be reduced to a combinatorial problem, which can efficiently be treated by computer. In particular, it is shown that the number of square-free ternary words of length n grows at least as 65^(n/40), replacing the previous best lower bound of 2^(n/17).

Box-ball systems and Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence
Published • View Publication • BIB
The box-ball system is studied from the viewpoint of combinatorics of words and tableaux. Each state of the box-ball system can be transformed into a pair of tableaux $(P,Q)$ by the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. In the language of tableaux, the $P$-symbol gives rise to a conserved quantity of the box-ball system, and the $Q$-symbol evolves independently of the $P$-symbol. The time evolution of the $Q$-symbol is described explicitly in terms of the box-labels.
The Hilbert Series of Pfaffian Rings

We give three determinantal expressions for the Hilbert series as well as the Hilbert function of a Pfaffian ring, and a closed form product formula for its multiplicity. An appendix outlining some basic facts about degeneracy loci and applications to multiplicity formulae for Pfaffian rings is also included.

Algebras generated by reciprocals of linear forms
Published in Journal of Algebra, vol. 250, 549-558 (2002) • View Publication • BIB
Let $Δ$ be a finite set of nonzero linear forms in several variables with coefficients in a field $\mathbf K$ of characteristic zero. Consider the $\mathbf K$-algebra $C(Δ)$ of rational functions generated by $\{1/α\mid α\in Δ\}$. Then the ring $\partial(V)$ of differential operators with constant coefficients naturally acts on $C(Δ)$. We study the graded $\partial(V)$-module structure of $C(Δ)$. We especially find standard systems of minimal generators and a combinatorial formula for the Poincaré series of $C(Δ)$. Our proofs are based on a theorem by Brion-Vergne [brv1] and results by Orlik-Terao [ort2}.

Gauss-Manin Connections for Arrangements
Published in Compositio Math. 136 (2003), 299-316 • Search Publication
We construct a formal connection on the Aomoto complex of an arrangement of hyperplanes, and use it to study the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of the arrangement in the cohomology of a complex rank one local system. We prove that the eigenvalues of the Gauss-Manin connection are integral linear combinations of the weights which define the local system.

Triples of arrangements and local systems
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 130 (2002), 3025-3031 • View Publication • BIB
For a triple of complex hyperplane arrangements, there is a well-known long exact sequence relating the cohomology of the complements. We observe that this result extends to certain local coefficient systems, and use this extension to study the characteristic varieties of arrangements. We show that the first characteristic variety may contain components that are translated by characters of any order, thereby answering a question of A. Suciu.

Noncommutative symmetric functions VI: Free quasi-symmetric functions and related algebras
Published in International Journal of Algebra and Computation 12 (2002), 671-717 • View Publication • BIB
This article is devoted to the study of several algebras which are related to symmetric functions, and which admit linear bases labelled by various combinatorial objects: permutations (free quasi-symmetric functions), standard Young tableaux (free symmetric functions) and packed integer matrices (matrix quasi-symmetric functions). Free quasi-symmetric functions provide a kind of noncommutative Frobenius characteristic for a certain category of modules over the 0-Hecke algebras. New examples of indecomposable $H_n(0)$-modules are discussed, and the homological properties of $H_n(0)$ are computed for small $n$. Finally, the algebra of matrix quasi-symmetric functions is interpreted as a convolution algebra.

Combinatorics of the heat trace on spheres
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a concise explicit expression for the heat trace coefficients of spheres. Our formulas yield certain combinatorial identities which are proved following ideas of D. Zeilberger. In particular, these identities allow to recover in a surprising way some known formulas for the heat trace asymptotics. Our approach is based on a method for computation of heat invariants developed in math.DG/9905073.

Counting occurences of 132 in a permutation
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the generating function for the number of permutations on n letters containing exactly $r\gs0$ occurences of 132. It is shown that finding this function for a given r amounts to a routine check of all permutations in $S_{2r}$.

Local statistics of lattice dimers
Published in Annales de Inst. H. Poincaré, Probabilités et Statistiques, 33 (1997),591-618 • View Publication • BIB
We show how to compute the probability of any given local configuration in a random tiling of the plane with dominos. That is, we explicitly compute the measures of cylinder sets for the measure of maximal entropy $μ$ on the space of tilings of the plane with dominos. We construct a measure $ν$ on the set of lozenge tilings of the plane, show that its entropy is the topological entropy, and compute explicitly the $ν$-measures of cylinder sets. As applications of these results, we prove that the translation action is strongly mixing for $μ$ and $ν$, and compute the rate of convergence to mixing (the correlation between distant events). For the measure $ν$ we compute the variance of the height function.

Selection principles and the minimal tower problem
Published in Note di Matematica 22 (2003), 53--81 • View Publication • BIB
We study diagonalizations of covers using various selection principles, where the covers are related to linear quasiorderings (tau-covers). This includes: equivalences and nonequivalences, combinatorial characterizations, critical cardinalities and constructions of special sets of reals. This study leads to a solution of a topological problem which was suggested to the author by Scheepers (and stated in an earlier work) and is related to the Minimal Tower problem. We also introduce a variant of the notion of tau-cover, called tau^*-cover, and settle some problems for this variant which are still open in the case of $τ$-covers. This new variant introduces new (and tighter) topological and combinatorial lower bounds on the Minimal Tower problem.
